Dear Member It is very sad to report the death of Mrs Rosemary Horsman who, with her husband Jerry, owned the George Teign herd in the Teign Valley, Devon until their recent retirement. Sincere condolences to Jerry and daughter Sarah, and to all the family. It has certainly been a very difficult late Spring for all in the farming world, and I continue to say that this cold wet weather must nearly be over. At least livestock has now mostly been turned out, and we can take pleasure in seeing how appreciative the cattle and sheep (and their owners) are when there is a sunny break. The Show season is almost upon us, and the Devon County is the first big one on the calendar, which this year is hosting the Burke Trophy, the ‘Oscar award’ of the cattle world. South Devon breeders are ready for this challenge, and over 50 have been entered for the Show. Good luck to all participants! The following week we shall see the Performance Championships taking place at Beef Expo in Shrewsbury on Friday 25th May and please may I call for final entries. It would be good to get as close to 30 cattle as possible, and we are a way short at the moment. Then the last week of the month sees us travelling over to East Anglia for our National Show at the Suffolk County. At the time of writing I do not have a total number of stalls booked, but there will be a good show of cattle, a lavish awards dinner and plenty of other things to see and do during the show. Not least is our Young Handler Competition, sponsored by Towergate Farm Insurance – we do need a minimum six entries for each class so please encourage your youngsters to enter. The Midland Club Sale was a success, with a good trade for both bulls and heifers, and a clearance of 93%. Well done to all those involved, and to all those who helped in whatever capacity. Please see inside for other forthcoming sales. Journals are printed and ready for collection at summer shows and events where we have a stand, so please help us keep our postage costs down. My best wishes Caroline 2

DATA PROTECTION As you are no doubt aware new legislation which comes into force towards the end of this month requires businesses to take measures to ensure the security of any personal data (including contact details) that they might hold. Many of you have been kind enough to complete a form giving permission to the SDHBS to hold and use this data in official publications – thank you. However, there was not sufficient time to collect back from every member this permission in time to produce the Members List in the back of this year’s Journal, so it has been omitted this time. We are taking various steps in the office to tighten up procedures; and the next step will necessitate attention to the database part of our website where we connect with ABRI in Australia. If you have already returned your form you need do nothing further and your details will continue to appear as appropriate in any search that is made on this database. However, if you have not yet completed and returned a form, in compliance with the new legislation we will be obliged to remove your name where it appears until such time as you can give us permission. This will be actioned by the end of this month. I would therefore urge you to complete and return your form as soon as possible to avoid any inconvenience. Thank you.

MIDLAND CLUB SALE The pre-Sale supper arranged by the Midland Club was an excellent carvery meal served in one of the Stoneleigh Pavilions and enjoyed by over 40 members and guests. It was an opportunity for a social catch-up which is always carried off with such enthusiasm by the Club! The following morning the show cattle were paraded before judge John East, who picked out Julian White’s bull Broadwood Zeus 1 as his male and breed champion, and Mike & Sarah Kettlewell’s 2 year old heifer AI Z Upper Norton Starling 1 as his female champion. Generally the cattle were a good run of bulls and females, and just one bull and two heifers were left unsold, so a good trade mainly to the Midlands. We are most grateful to Mark Bromell and the team at Kivells for doing their utmost to ensure the success of the Sale. 3

PERFORMANCE RECORDING

For those members who already record performance with our Breedplan services, you will find enclosed with this newsletter the annual inventory of your breeding females as per the records held on our database. Please would you be kind enough to check these, make any appropriate deletions or additions, and return them to Elizabeth. For those other members – it would be good to take a few minutes to think about whether you should be recording! At recent meetings of committees and the Council the importance of performance recording has again been stressed as a valuable breeding selection tool. Half of an animal’s genetics will be passed on to its progeny to affect their performance. EBVs act as a guide to how an animal’s offspring will perform compared with similar animals in a similar environment, so in effect displaying what traits in which the animal is likely to be superior or inferior. The cost of recording has remained the same since Breedplan services were contracted by the Society in 2005 - £120 per herd to include the first five breeding females, and £3 per cow thereafter. Scanning services are provided by a number of specialist scanners, who charge the breeder direct. As for handling and equipment, what you need to get started is a weigh crush and a bit of labour to run the animals through whilst doing other jobs with the cattle, such as health screening or weaning for example. However, if after consideration you decide that recording is not for you, PLEASE in any case note calving ease score on your birth notifications – if you’ve not seen the calf born then it’s a one, and if you have had to intervene then you’ll know its score anyway. This information is so very important for the breed, and for the accuracy of breeding potential. If you can weigh calves at birth, so much the better. 7

PERFORMANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS, BEEF EXPO Shrewsbury, Friday 25th May Entries will close on Monday 14th May for this Breedplan recorded event at Beef Expo. The Championships will be judged by Mr Gordon Tully, Waddeton, Brixham, and we are also grateful to Mr John Wakeham for taking on the role of chief steward. The classes will be judged 50% on QBI or SRI (male or female), and 50% on inspection, with the final decision on breed champion being made by the judge alone. Prize money of £500 will be paid out between 1st, 2nd, 3rd class places, and champions.

AGRICULTURE CONSULTATION Have your say while you can! The Government’s consultation on the future of farming post Brexit is to close on 8th May, so there are only a few days left in which to have your say if you have not already done so. Other lobbying groups, particularly environmentalists and those whose priority does not appear to be the production of food, have already strongly voiced their opinions so it is important that the farming community is properly represented. There are several ways to respond, some briefer than others, but the crucial thing is to be clear and to make your arguments succinctly: - by e-mail to Defra at agricultureconsultation@defra.gsi.gov.uk - by filling out Defra’s online survey (or the bits that you wish to complete) at https://consult.defra.gov.uk/farming/future-of-farming - by writing to Defra at Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, Westminster, London, SW1P 3JR

CHECS CERTIFICATION FOR TB Despite opposition from various bodies (including the National Beef Association and Pedigree Beef Societies) Certification for TB was brought in late in 2016 as part of the government’s TB eradication strategy, it was said to help reduce risks of spreading TB through trading, and also to ‘reward’ those who can demonstrate a good history within the herd. Like it or not, it is something we have to accept, and if it helps you then all the better. For those herds who are in and out of TB restriction, however, its interpretation could be open to misunderstanding so please use with care as a purchaser and talk to the vendor for the most expansive and accurate historic information. The scheme obviously benefits those in low-risk areas more than in high-risk areas; but if you are in a high-risk area with a low rating it could be to your commercial advantage. The different scoring risk levels are: Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4: Level 5:

(lowest risk). 10 years since the last bTB breakdown within the herd 6 years since the last bTB breakdown within the herd 2 years since the last bTB breakdown within the herd The herd is Officially TB Free (OTF) at this point but has had a bTB breakdown within the past two years (highest risk). Participating but not compliant with CHeCS standards

More detailed information and advice about the programme should be available through your farm vet.

CHECS CERTIFICATION FOR NEOSPORA This is a positive move by CHeCS to introduce a risk level rating for Neospora, and also to raise the profile of the disease among cattle and dog owners. The disease Neosporosis is a disease caused by a parasite called neospora caninum, and its main effect is to cause abortion. It can also sometimes cause neurological disease in calves. There are obviously significant economic impacts associated with the disease, from lost calves, less milk produced, and higher reproductive costs. Disease transmission This happens in two ways: - Vertically, from infected cow to unborn calf through the placenta, and - Horizontally, through water/pasture/feed contaminated by dog or fox faeces Biosecurity Dogs can become infected by eating neospora infected placentae or carcases, so access should be prevented. However, an infected dog remains so for a relatively short period (two to three weeks) and then is immune and no longer a risk. Infection can also be picked up from pasture, but a cow will not show any signs of the disease until it crosses the placenta. Infected cows remain infected for life and maintain neospora in the herd by giving birth to infected heifer replacements. There is no evidence of direct cow to cow transmission. Evidence One of our breeder members writes, “A few years ago we did some random tests and found sporadic cases, but felt it not to be a correctable issue because of our footpaths. We have now retested all over two years old and have gone through all the pedigrees. We can trace nearly all of them back to foundation stock, so it is clear to us that in our case dogs and footpaths are less important than the passing down the dam line. We are therefore going to cull all but the cows that could produce exceptional bulls, and not keep or sell for breeding any heifers from neospora positive dams - which will take a while to complete. As an example of our problem, two lovely related heifers had dead calves and both were neospora positive. Other positives have been difficult to get into calf. It 13

is clear to us that the disease amplifies quite quickly unless dealt with, particularly if the animals look good on paper and in the flesh. It is worth taking note of this really unfortunate herd history, and commend this breeder for the action he is taking to rid the herd of the disease. CHeCS neospora programme Testing herds are assigned a risk level (with 1 the lowest, and 5 the highest), as follows: Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5

Three or more consecutive clear annual herd screens One or two consecutive clear annual herd screens The number of test positive animals does not exceed 5% of the herd eligible for testing in the neospora programme More than 5% of eligible animals identified as test positive animals at the most recent test These herds may be carrying out a testing programme, but are not adhering to the mandatory requirements of the programme

The programme includes culling of positive tested females, abortions must be investigated, and all females over one year of age must be tested annually. For further information please discuss with your farm vet. We are beginning to see neospora certification for sale animals, and this can only increase as awareness is raised.

BVD Free England BVDFree England is a voluntary industry-led scheme, working to eliminate Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) from all cattle in England by 2022. The key to success is to identify and remove all animals persistently infected (PI) with the BVD virus from the English cattle herd. The scheme is built around a national database, bvdfree.org.uk, which is searchable for the BVD status of individual animals and herds tested under the scheme. Famers must register with BVDFree to enable their herds' BVD test results to be uploaded to the database. Individual animal BVD status can be found by entering a UK tag number, or you can search the database for a herd's BVD status using the CPH number. This provides farmers with recognition, confidence and traceability when buying and selling BVDFree cattle. 14

The website is designed to be an information portal on BVD, providing relevant technical documents to aid BVD control and elimination. Please note that the BVDFree Scheme is not in a position to advise farmers on their specific BVD control plans. These should be discussed with a vet. The first step of the BVDFree Scheme is for farmers to sign up to the scheme. The next step is to set up a BVDFree programme on-farm using the ‘ADAM’ principles below. By working with your vet and following this guidance, your herd can become and stay free from BVD. When submitting BVD samples for use in the scheme, samples must be sent to a BVDFree designated laboratory with a completed BVDFree submission form. A list of laboratories with links to the appropriate submission forms can be found on the BVDFree website. The designated laboratories will upload your results to the BVDFree database. Individual animal status can then be searched by entering the animal’s UK number into the searchbox. Herd BVD status can also be searched by entering the CPH on the homepage. This allows BVD status to be easily accessible when buying and selling cattle. Use ADAM to set up a control programme: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Assess the level of biosecurity and disease risk on farm Define the BVD status of a herd Action plan for control of BVD on the farm implemented Monitor progress

Any members wishing to sell cattle through Society or Midland Club Sales must be members of CHeCS, and any accreditation status is certified by CHeCS in accordance with Sale rules.

REJECTED BULLS AT SALES There have been some concerns expressed again recently about the suitability and practice of privately selling bulls at Society sales that have been rejected at veterinary inspection. Council discussed this again at last week’s Council meeting and voted the following decision by a majority: Any bull that is rejected at veterinary inspection will be marked by a cross and returned to their pen or removed from market premises according to the wishes of the vendor. Following the sale of all other animals (males and females) the owner will have the voluntary opportunity to offer the bull for sale through the ring, and the auctioneer will announce the reason for rejection and that the bull will be sold without NBA Terms & Conditions of Sale. All animals advertised in the sale catalogue will be sold through the auctioneer’s books. 16

AND FINALLY … Two factory workers are talking. The woman says, "I can make the boss give me the day off." The man replies, "And how would you do that?" The woman says, "Just wait and see." She then hangs upside down from the ceiling. The boss comes in and says, "What are you doing?" The woman replies, "I'm a light bulb." The boss then says, "You've been working so much that you've gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off." The man starts to follow her and the boss says, "Where are you going?" The man says, "I'm going home, too. I can't work in the dark."
