Saving bees one hive at a time: The basics of backyard beehives Scientists and environmentalists have been warning the public for years that honeybees are disappearing at alarming rates. Scientists were initially uncertain in regard to what was decimating bee populations. Even though no single cause is to blame, data has pointed to pesticide use and the mysterious colony collapse disorder, which is a name given to the dwindling colonies seen around the world. National Geographic News says bees are essential because of their roles as pollinators. Agriculture industries rely on honeybees, especially managed honeybees, to keep commercial crops pollinated and productive. Estimates indicate that roughly one-third of U.S. crops rely on honeybees - accounting for more than $15 billion in crop production. Without bees, the costs of everything from blueberries to apples to broccoli would rise, as farmers would have to use a different, more expensive pollination method. Even though backyard beehives or bee farms may not be crucial to consumer agriculture, bringing healthy colonies back to various areas is bene�cial to the environment overall. The art of beekeeping has become an important endeavor, and just about anyone with some time and resources can start their own apiary. • Start by studying bees. Interested beekeepers can begin their journey by reading all they can on beekeeping. The American Bee Journal or backyard beekeeping books and articles are great places to start. Local beekeeping associations also are invaluable resources for information on local bee species and traits. • Know the laws. It’s important to get the go-ahead from local authorities before introducing bees into the community. By checking city or town ordinances, potential beekeepers will know how many hives are allowed and which type of property sizes are amenable and allowable. • Get the right supplies. Research can help prospective beekeepers understand the type of equipment they will need. One can purchase this equipment, but some beekeeping organizations may be willing to lend or rent it to interested parties. Hive boxes, bottom boards, a veil, a jacket, a smoker, and a top feeder are just some of the supplies needed. • Order bees. Bees can be acquired from other beekeeping enthusiasts or can be ordered online. The bees will need to consist of the queen, drones and worker bees. According to the resource Bees Brothers, a starter set of bees is called a “nuc.” Bee suppliers start selling in the winter for spring swarms. • Place the hive. It’s important to set up hives away from foot traf�c. In addition, face hives away from strong winds, with the ideal directions being east and south. Hives need sunshine and some shade on summer afternoons, advises BackYardHive. With time, homeowners can become successful beekeepers and do their part to replenish muchneeded bee colonies.

The effects of alcohol on the body According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 56 percent of adults age 18 and over reported drinking alcohol in the past month. The prevalence of alcohol is undeniable, and many drinkers seem unfazed by the shortand long-term effects of alcohol consumption. While drinking in moderation may not necessarily prove harmful, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that excessive alcohol consumption, whether itÕs on a single occasion or over time, can take a serious toll on various areas of the body. • Brain: Alcohol can affect how the brain looks and works, interfering with its communication pathways and potentially disrupting one’s mood and behavior. In addition, alcohol can affect a person’s ability to think clearly and adversely affect coordination. • Heart: Heart problems associated with longtime excessive alcohol consumption or even too much alcohol on a single occasion include cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that compromises its ability to pump blood to the rest of the body. Irregular heart beat, stroke and high blood pressure are some additional heart conditions that can result from excessive alcohol consumption. • Pancreas: The pancreas is a gland located in the abdomen that, among other things, aids in the digestive process. The NIAAA notes that alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can lead to pancreatitis. An in�ammation and swelling of blood vessels in the pancreas, pancreatitis can prevent proper digestion and produce pain in the upper abdomen that can spread to the back as well. • Liver: Cirrhosis, a chronic disease of the liver that’s often linked to alcoholism, may be the most widely known liver disease associated with alcohol. However, additional diseases, including alcoholic hepatitis, �brosis and steatosis also may result from heavy drinking. Roughly 35 percent of long-term drinkers develop alcoholic hepatitis, the presence of which may require liver transplants if other courses of treatment, such as dietary changes and quitting alcohol, are ineffective. Fibrosis refers to scar tissue in the liver, while the Cleveland Clinic notes that steatosis, or fatty liver, that occurs after acute alcohol ingestion is generally reversible with abstinence. • Immune system: Excessive alcohol consumption weakens the immune system, leaving acute and chronic heavy drinkers vulnerable to disease. Single occasion heavy drinkers may �nd their ability to defend themselves against infection is weakened for up to 24 hours after getting drunk. Chronic heavy drinkers are more susceptible to diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis than people who drink in moderation or not at all. • Cancer: Excessive alcohol consumption also has been linked to a host of cancers, including cancers of the mouth, esophagus, throat, liver, and breast.
