What can a newspaper and a community accomplish together? Create healthier, more active and responsible lifestyle.

According to a 2004 NCHS study, 66.3 percent of all US adults (ages 20+) are overweight or obese. According to a 2007 a NC DHHS report, 64 percent of adults reported being overweight or obese. If current trends continue, researchers estimate that approximately half of all adults could be obese by 2030. In Buncombe County, almost 52 percent of adults are either overweight or obese. Mission Health System saw a community on the verge of a health crisis. The Asheville Citizen-Times saw a community unconnected to the healthy lifestyle options of the region. ASHEVILLE’S COMMUNITY HEALTH CHALLENGE BEGINS Mission Health System created Lighten Up 4 Life, a five month community weight-loss challenge. Mission enlisted the help of businesses and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce to sign up four-person teams. The finale of the weight loss competition was the Chamber Challenge 5k run and walk. Supported by team members and motivated by monthly prizes, about 300 people signed up for Lighten Up 4 Life by January 1. The Chamber and other businesses in the community set the tone by embracing workplace health. The Asheville Citizen-Times began coverage of Lighten Up in early January with daily profiles of teams and features on health, wellness and fitness.

As the competition came to end, the newspaper challenged people to run or walk in the Chamber Challenge 5k, the finale of Lighten Up 4 Life in June. Understanding how difficult it was for many people to literally take the first step toward forming healthy exercise habits, the newspaper continued to feature the faces of “people like me” with profiles of teams that planned to run or walk in the Chamber Challenge.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR LIVING WELL AND LIGHTEN UP 4 LIFE Earlier in the year, the Asheville Citizen-Times saw an opportunity to reconnect the community to healthy lifestyle options that make Asheville unique: • • • • •

Plentiful outdoor events and races Bountiful locally grown food Beautiful terrain in every season A thriving and walkable downtown A community dedicated to alternative and holistic health options

Readers responded to our coverage of these topics and wanted more. We saw the opportunity to create community, to connect the people interested in living well together. In December 2009, prototyping and design of a digital community, Living Well was begun with a targeted launch with Lighten Up 4 Life 2009.

Meet Pam Anderson.

Every day find something new on livingwell.

On the heels of our parntership with Pam Anderson and Biltmore, we launched a Living Well site that has become a community bulletin board for fitness, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles.

Pam Anderson graciously agreed to join our initiative and will return to Asheville to run the 10th Annual Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon and 5K Run & Walk. At the start of the race, the newspaper and Mission will recognize and celebrate some of the inspiring people who changed their fitness and diet lifestyles to improve their health.

THE STORY CONTINUES: 2010 LIVING WELL CHALLENGE After nearly two years of supporting health and wellness initiatives, we understand that our readers respond to coverage that inspires them to connect with Asheville’s healthy lifestyle options. Through our many partnerships we have been able to create and sustain community-wide momentum to inspire Asheville to make the conscious decision to “live well.” We propose to take this one step further in 2010 by creating the Living Well Challenge The goal of the Living Well Challenge is to inspire an ongoing commitment to living well to create a healthier and happier community. The Challenge will foster a connection to local food and environment to engage an individual to consciously make better decisions to eat better and live more actively, and ultimately consume less resources.

WHAT IS THE LIVING WELL CHALLENGE? The Living Well Challenge will be a series of activities and events throughout 2010 involving multiple partners and agencies focused on health, food, fitness and environment. Our partners will include Mission Health System, Biltmore, ASAP (Appalachian Sustainable Agricultural Project), Slow Food Asheville, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Ingles Markets and countless others to create a series of community-wide projects designed to bring health and wellness to every local resident. The Challenge will will kick off with a 1 mile walk on the grounds of Biltmore. We hope to engage 5,000 people -- families, friends and colleagues to collective walk one mile to symbolically make the commitment to live well. Other activities and events include: • Launching Lighten Up 4 Life for the third year across several hospital systems and Chambers of Commerce • Volunteering at community gardens with ASAP • How to prepare/preserve local food with Slow Food Asheville • Learning how to cook a healthy family meal with USA Weekend columnist Pam Anderson • Understanding how to eat consciously with New York Times food columnist Mark Bitman • Walking in Asheville with Mark Fenton • Yoga, Zumba and other activities with the YMCA • Holistic health care and phyto medicine with Gaia Herbs • Recycling and conscious consumption resources and composting
