Some are totally over the top and others are just perfect for adding a personal touch to your celebration. When it comes to couples who are ballin’ on a budget, you may be thinking some of these are out of your financial comfort zone but there are infinite ways to pull inspiration from this year’s trend report and spin it to match your celebration style (and wallet). You have our full permission to steal these ideas for your wedding day. Unique Invitations Get your guests excited to celebrate from the very beginning—today’s wedding correspondence really stands out. Plexiglas invites, foil stamping and glow-in-thedark ink are a few of the stationery trends catching our eye. The Gift Lounge This deconstructed welcome bag is perfect for destination weddings. Instead of stuffing and delivering a gift for your guests, let them do the work (they’ll be glad you did). Set up a room full of swag (snacks, drinks, local sweet treats) and guests can choose their favorite things. Best of all, you (or your family or wedding party) can greet guests in person when they arrive. If your friends and family are split between a couple of hotels, set up a table of goodies at the exit of your welcome party for a truly memorable party favor.

Metallic Dresses and Breezy Silhouettes

Asking for What You Really Want From cash to mountain bikes and even museum memberships, we love that couples can ask for just about anything under the sun these days—including nothing at all. Charity registries are on the rise along with experiences, like a pottery class or a private cocktail session with an expert mixologist. Don’t worry, you can still register for classic wedding gifts like fine china, upgraded cookware and that fancy espresso machine you’ve had your eye on for years. Or do both!

Color Comeback Neutrals and pastels have paved the way for a total return to color. Expect to see pops of bold shades and bright color pairings. Pantone named Greenery the Color of the Year—it’s vibrant and earthy, making it perfect for all seasons. This fresh hue is symbolic of “the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Fun Food Presentations The new trend in food is equal parts yum and fun. Menus are being carefully curated with favorite eats and local specialties (think: deep-dish pizza for a Chicago after-party). But the presentation is almost upstaging the food. Self-serve bars and food installations, like a hanging acrylic shelf piled high with cheese and charcuterie, are instant wows. on your engagement! There will be a lot of excitement during this time as you prepare for your walk down the aisle. Whether you are having a short or long engagement make sure to enjoy this time and center the wedding around the two of you! Two of the biggest decisions the two of you will have to make is when you want to have your wedding and where you want to have it hosted at. This will have to be a main priority as venues book 1 to 2 years in advance. While touring the different venues, you will want to make sure that you choose the one that best fits who the two of you are as a couple. Once you get the venue chosen, everything else will fall into place. Some of the items you will want to figure out prior to touring different venues are how many guests you plan on inviting, what season you want to have your wedding in, if you are set on your date or is it flexible, and what your overall budget is. Once you get these items figured out it will help you narrow down your options. You will be surprised on how many new possibilities will open up for you once you figure out all the options for your wedding. There are multiple trends when it comes to choosing a venue for your wedding. 22

Many couples are looking for the new “it” wedding venue. Some of the trends that are becoming more popular are: Museums, Gardens, Loft Buildings and Rooftops. Barns and outdoor spaces are still being sought after. Once you choose your venue, the next step will be to find a caterer if your venue doesn’t already have an exclusive one. One of the best ways to find a caterer is through referrals from friends and family. By going through referrals, you will be able to find out if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with working with certain ones. While calling the different caterers, you will want to make sure they have your date available and if they offer complimentary tastings. When you are at the tasting you will be able to get to know the caterer and the quality of the food they are presenting for your wedding. Once you get done with the tasting you should be able to tell if the caterer is the right fit for you. If not, do not feel obligated that you

have to choose them. Most of the caterers will present their pricing as “price per plate” or “price per guest”. If they present it this way to you, make sure to find out what fees they add on at the end. Most places will add on the sales tax, service fee and a gratuity. In the end, the actual per-person cost may be a lot more than you originally had budgeted for. Catering trends are constantly changing. The two most popular styles are plated dinners and buffets. Fresh foods provided by the local markets and farmers are becoming more popular along with the traditional food trucks. Cocktails offered at weddings are starting to become just as important to the couples as the food that is being served. No matter if your meeting is with the venue or the caterer make sure to ask questions, and always read the contracts before you sign anything. Even if you need to, take a couple days to really go through it before making your decision. ♥ 24

What is the tear down policy? • Will there be a point person on-site the day of the wedding?

The Steps to Choosing Your Wedding Photographer

Unlike

the work of your other wedding vendors (music, flower arrangements, cake), photographs aren’t things you can hear, smell, taste or even see at first. Careful research and selectiveness regarding professional skills, artistic style and personal demeanor are important when choosing your wedding photographer.

Settle on a Style

Before you begin researching photographers, you’ll need to decide the type of photography style you prefer as that will help determine which photographer you’ll want for your wedding. Do Your Homework

Start your search by reading reviews from recent newlyweds and browsing local listings, especially members of the Central Minnesota Wedding Association. Carefully review potential photographers’ websites and blogs to check out wedding photos they’ve shot. That’ll give you an idea of their style. The design of the website will have clues to the photographer’s personality and sensibility. Check their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages too. Is their client feedback positive? How did the photographer respond?

Set Up Interviews

You do need to meet your potential photographers in person. If you like what you see on their site—and their fees are in your ballpark range—call for their availability for your wedding date. If they are already booked on your date, see if they have an associate or can recommend another shooter with a similar style. Set up in-person meetings with two to four potential photographers

who are available on your wedding date to look at more of their work and see if you connect at your meeting. Do talk about your venue, wedding style and your expected style of the photos.

Review Full Wedding Albums

Don’t base your decision solely on what you see in a photographer’s highlights gallery or album. Photographers show prospective clients a portfolio of their best pictures, all from different weddings, so you’re seeing the best of the best. Ask to see two or three full galleries from actual weddings they’ve personally shot to give you a clear idea of the complete collection of photos.

Review Albums with a Critical Eye

When you review a photographer’s album, look for the key moments you want captured: Did they get photos of both the bride and the groom when they locked eyes for the first time? It’s important that you detect sensitivity

in capturing people’s emotions making sure the photographer’s subjects look relaxed. You do want to see smiling shots of your friends too.

Make Sure Your Personalities Mesh

Don’t underestimate the importance of liking and bonding with your photographer. Your photographer should be excited by your vision when you describe it. To get the best photos, hire a pro that has a firm grasp of social graces but is bold enough to explore

unique images. Your photographer will be shadowing your every move so the more comfortable both of you are with the photographer, the better the photos will turn out. The best photos come from a photographer who is assertive enough to seek great moments and connective enough to coax relaxed smiles and natural stances from guests but certainly calm enough to be a positive influence. The best photographer asks lots of questions and is a very good listener.

Confirm Your Shooter(s)

Include specific stipulations in the contract about who will be the photographer on the actual day. Check whether the photographer will bring any assistants to your wedding. If you have room in your budget, consider hiring a second shooter. Many top-notch photographers include a second shooter in the contract, but if this isn’t a part of the deal, you may want to ask about the possibility.

Compare Packages

When interviewing candidates, ask for a

general range based on the photographer’s standard “fee” and package, plus their standard rates for the type of album you’ll want and the amount of coverage you’ve booked them for be it the full day or a portion of that day. Find out what’s included in their standard package, plus range for any extras you may want, like an engagement shoot, special effects or additional coverage, so you can compare rates. Clearly identify exactly how many hours of coverage are included. Ideally,

you want your photographer to be there from when you start getting ready until after you make your grand exit from the reception. Many include about 6 to 12 hours to cover everything from your preceremony events (getting ready with your bridesmaids and first-look photos) to the end of the reception. Consider paying for more coverage if there’s a chance you’ll run over and you want your photographer there until the end (overtime is generally a higher hourly rate).

Be Clear About Your Rights

Many contracts stipulate that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, even the ones of you. That means the photographer can use them promotionally (on their website or blog; use them for publication or feature them in ads). That also means you can’t just post the digital proofs they send you—most photographers have a policy that you can only share watermarked images or images with their credit on them. Also, unless you negotiate otherwise, if you want to print the images yourselves or order an album from another source, you’ll have to buy the rights to the images.

Get the Postproduction Details

Discuss the timing of how many images should I expect ….. are they high resolution or low resolution ….. will I be able to get prints made myself ….. does the photographer retain the rights to the images … will the proofs I see be the retouched versions or does retouching take place after I select my photos? • Can I meet you for a consultation? It is important to spend some time not only talking business but also chatting informally with your potential photographer. Since you’ll be spending most of your wedding day with them, you’ll want to be sure you are comfortable with their personality and communication style. • Can I see your portfolio? Higher prices do not necessarily mean high quality photos. Make sure you like the photos of the photographer that will be shooting your wedding. Also make sure you see a complete wedding in an album, not just a “best of.” • Do you use high-end professional equipment? Churches and reception halls very often present low-light situations. Even outside might present low-light situations depending on time of day, time of year and weather. Does your photographer have the equipment to handle this? • What is your backup strategy? We have all heard the stories of the photographer who lost all their images. Make sure your photographer is careful about their images, backs up to multiple hard drives, including off-site locations. • Do you have backup gear? It is essential that your photographer have two of everythingcamera, flash, etc. This insures that even if something breaks, the photographer can keep going. • Are you insured? Professional liability ensures that not only will you and your guests be taken care of should disaster strike, but is one more sign that your wedding photographer is a true professional. • How many times have you worked specifically as a wedding photographer? Someone may be a great family and baby photographer, but wedding photography and working within the time constraints of the day is entirely different. Make sure your photographer is up to the task. • Are you the wedding photographer who will actually take our pictures? If not, can we meet the person who will be? Some studios hire others to shoot weddings. You will want to be sure to ask all of these questions of the person that will be photographing your wedding and as said before, make sure you are comfortable with that person.

Actually, the true first impression happens when you formally ask your family and friends to join you on your special day – with your wedding invitations. You can create invitations that are uniquely yours. The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding. They set the tone through design and specific color combinations, and suggest the event’s overall level of formality. The first steps are to decide on the vision, the colors that you want integrated into the invite and the quantities needed. You may choose to create a traditional, formal wedding invite or a modern invite based on the wedding motif that you envision. An invitation can consist of several customary elements: an outer envelope; the invitation; a reception card; a response card that is self-addressed or includes a selfaddressed, unsealed envelope; an accommodations card; thank-you cards; and, in some cases if time allows, a save-the-date card or magnet. In designing a custom wedding invite, you will want to apply style and uniqueness to each piece, keeping them all socially correct and applying wedding invite etiquette as well. Most bridal shops will only allow an hour-long appointment. And, while one hour is plenty of time to try on dresses, if you can narrow down your options before stepping foot in the dressing room, you’re in for a much more pleasant, laid-back shopping experience. One easy way to narrow down your gown options is to choose a silhouette that will highlight your best-loved assets and conceal your less-favorable areas. Remember, once you’ve found “the one” it takes 6 months to get your gown in the store once ordered. Custom gowns can sometimes even take a little longer. Make sure to give yourself enough time to order and have alterations done before your wedding. You don’t want to be stressing out about your dress showing up on time because you waited. There are always the rush fee options but you’ll want to avoid having to pay more than necessary for your wedding dress! Along with finding the right gown for your body type, there are a few other things that can help make your wedding dress shopping experience as easy as possible. First, trust your consultant and don’t be afraid to try on gowns they suggest which may be outside of your traditional comfort zone. Sometimes “the one” isn’t one you would have even 66

Silhouette Guide Ball Gown – The Ball Gown is fitted at the bodice and has a waistline that leads to a full skirt. It compliments hourglass body types. A-Line – The A-Line is fitted at the bodice and angles out to the ground and resembles the outline of an ‘A’. This is the most universal silhouette because it tends to look great on every body type. Trumpet – The Trumpet hugs the hips and flows out in an A-line around the mid-thigh. It tastefully compliments a woman’s shape without being confining. Mermaid – The Mermaid fits closely to the body to the knees. It then flares out to the hem. This style looks good on women with a straight shape. They are opting to go for some color whether it’s a light gold or champagne underlay or a rich caramel color. These colors tend to compliment certain skin tones better than the solid white/ivory. Depending on your wedding venue, you may need to supply some, if not all the rental items required to host your wedding reception and serve your guests. Here is your ultimate wedding rentals checklist. When you book your reception site, be sure that you understand what’s included in the rental fee. Each venue is different, so you have to clarify with the site manager which items the venue provides and which wedding rentals you must provide. As always, make sure that everything you have agreed upon is put in writing. Depending on the venue – and the type of reception you’re planning - you may need to supply some, if not all the items listed below. Make it fun! Consider renting crowd-pleasers such as cotton candy makers and popcorn machines. For outdoor areas, offer games like bocce ball and a beanbag toss. Your best source for rentals? The Central Minnesota Wedding Association members listed on page 84 of this Décor and Rentals section. How much do you need? Consider at least three to four dishes, glasses, stemware and flatware pieces per guest. For a cocktail hour, you’ll need at least three glasses for 76

each person. And order at least 10 extra chairs for your ceremony, plus 10 extras for your cocktail party and reception in case any chairs arrive cracked or broken.

Tables Here’s a breakdown of the types of tables you may need: Guest Tables 36-inch rounds seat 4-6 guests 48-inch rounds seat 6-8 guests 60-inch rounds seats 8-10 guests 6-foot rectangle seats about 8 guests Cake Table(s) Appropriate size depends on size of cake, whether you’ll also have a groom’s cake, and whether you’ll display both cakes on the same or separate tables. 48inch round usually works well. Head Table Seats bridal party. Often consists of rectangular tables placed end-to-end. Sweetheart Table In place of head table, consider a small table that seats the bride and groom

while the rest of the wedding party sits at guest tables. Buffet Tables & Service Components If you have decided on a buffet dinner, you’ll need to arrange several food stations, such as meet carving, etc. Your chosen catering source will likely include buffet table service components such as chafers but make sure to confirm that with them. If the buffet service components are not included your chosen décor and rental provider should have the needed buffet service equipment. Gift Table Size depends on the number of guests you are expecting. Guest Book Table A small table for your reception guest book. Chairs For a seated dinner or buffet, you will need to provide seating for all reception guests. For a buffet-style cocktail reception, you may able to get away with enough chairs for half or more of the

total number of guests. You may need to rent or purchase chair covers separately. High chairs for children should be available from your chosen rental source. Linens Guest linen tablecloths, table runners, napkins for both cocktail party and reception, as well as luxe or vintage linens for the cake, gift, sweetheart and photo tables. Also consider chair covers: they are a great way to add color and texture to your space. Chair Covers Chair covers may be included with the rented tables and chairs, or they may need to be rented in addition to your chairs and tables. Tableware For a formal sit-down reception, tables are usually set with complete place settings. At a buffet reception where guests serve themselves, plates and silverware may be located at the buffet table. Dishes Cocktail-party appetizer plates, china patterns, chargers, dessert plates, footed bowls for desserts. Don’t Forget: Unbreakable plates for the little ones — no one wants to deal with expensive breakage. Stem & Glassware Champagne flutes, bar glasses in various sizes, red and/or white wine glasses, beer mugs, soft-drink glasses, water glasses. Don’t Forget: Martini glasses for dessert servings; appropriate glassware for your signature cocktails. (Know what you’ll serve before you order your glassware.) Flatware Utensils for the cocktail party, plus 78

knives, forks and spoons for the reception dinner. Don’t Forget: Serving utensils, if you’ll have family-style service at your reception. And don’t forget serving bowls and platters. Most rental sources offer gorgeous hammered silver or copper serving bowls and chafing dishes. Tent A large tent or canopy may be required for receptions held outdoors to protect you and your guests from the sun or rain. Options: Tents and canopies come in different sizes and colors. A smaller tent (20x20 feet) will accommodate about 40 guests at a sit-down dinner, a 20x40 about 200, and a 60x100 about 500 or more. Depending on the shape of your reception area, you may need to rent several smaller canopies rather than one large one. Take pictures of the site for references

for your tent rental company. Although they should survey the facility themselves before they set up the tent, the pictures are a good reference for them when you first set up an appointment. Heaters/Air-Conditioners You may need to rent heaters if your reception will be held outdoors and if the temperature may drop below 65 degrees. There are electric and gas heaters, both of which come in different sizes. Gas heaters are more popular since they do not have unsightly and unsafe electric cords. Dance Floor The size of your dance floor will depend on how many guests you expect. They can range from 12x12 up to 20x30 or larger. Get some graph paper and make a floor plan, and bring this with you when you determine your rental and décor needs. ♥

The right wedding florist can help make wedding planning a breeze, while a difficult florist can make designing your wedding a total nightmare.

Here’s how to pick the right florist for your event ……. Finding a Florist

Many wedding websites have vendor listings that include photos, reviews, and general pricing information. Or browse pictures from real weddings held in the same town as your event--typically the florist information will be listed alongside the images. Make appointments to visit at least three different florists. When you visit, take a look around: Do you like the arrangements that are in the store windows? Are the flowers in the cooler fresh and bright? Is the shop clean and organized?

Ideally, your florist will have vast previous experience as a wedding florist and will have many photographs of previous wedding flower arrangements and bridal bouquets. Make sure that the pictures are recent, and comprehensive – not just one bouquet, but that they show all the bridal bouquets and centerpieces from a particular wedding.

Share Your Ideas

Bring swatches of the bridesmaid dress fabric, pages from magazines with bouquets and floral arrangements that you like, the type of container you’d like to use, and any ideas you may have. Create a Pinterest board of your favorite wedding flower ideas and share the URL with the vendor in advance of your meeting. Make sure that the florist is receptive to your ideas, and that they are willing to listen to your vision. If you find the florist 88

When to Book Your Wedding Florist

Whether you are choosing a limousine, a vintage car, a bus, or a horse-drawn carriage there are many options available to you. Limousines and charter buses have grown in popularity in recent years. Wedding couples have been making transportation arrangements in order to keep their wedding party together throughout the day; from the ever popular church or park to the reception to the all-day package that is open to the couples every whim. Wedding guest transportation also continues to be a growing trend. Whether your party is large or small, your style is elegant or relaxed, your budget is limited or extravagant the following information will help direct you down the path to trouble free transportation arrangements. • Work with a “reputable” company when choosing your transportation. Check their BBB rating (Better Business Bureau). Proper Licensing, Insurance, and Driver Qualifications are important! Your “safety” should be foremost in your mind.

• Chose an appropriate “size” vehicle for your needs. Comfort should be paramount! Note the broad shoulders/ height of your groomsmen and the fullness of the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses. • Reserve as “early” as possible. If your heart is set on a particular limousine or option; make sure to get your signature on the dotted line for your date and time. However, don’t assume there is nothing out there if you want to book the week before. You may be surprised what is still available. • Letting “cost” be the deciding factor in determining what type of transportation you choose or what company you work with may not be the best idea. Sometimes what appears to be a great price turns into a disappointment in the end. Do your homework, details matter! Certain package options including, split time, all day, or minimum hour time frames may be worth your consideration. (Remember that the gratuity is usually an additional expense.)

•G et a “written” confirmation sheet or contract. That way there is no misunderstanding as to when and where your transportation is expected. •“ Understand” what you have reserved. Knowing what is included in your wedding package, Red Carpet Service, or what is customary goes a long way in you having a smooth ride. Remember, even though you are paying for the vehicle, any illegal behavior/activity is still illegal and prohibited. • How will the driver/chauffer be “dressed”? Most professional transportation companies have set attire for their personnel. Ask what your driver will be wearing. • Is “alcohol” included in the price? Limousine and charter companies may provide non-alcoholic beverages along with the glassware set up, however, MN State Statutes prohibit companies from providing alcoholic beverages. Check with your provider as to what type, if any, alcoholic beverages may be brought into the transportation choice you have made. • As mentioned above “Wedding Guests” transportation is a growing trend. If you are serving alcoholic beverages throughout your reception, it may be wise to provide a safe ride for your guests too. Some hotels and venues provide shuttle services but not all. Ask your transportation provider for their input. There are “economical” options available that could keep you from needless worry and/or liability. Whether you have chosen a limousine, a bus, or a buggy; chosen a full day package or just a ride from the church/ park to the reception, you can make these reservations at any time. Just don’t forget to “Arrive in Style”! ♥

Contact potential vendors and set up meetings with each of them. Before you meet, write a list of questions youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to know the answers to, both personal and professional questions (not too personal). Your vendors should not mind at all and will be happy to answer your questions. There are several sites online that have various wedding vendors listed, apparel, floral, invitations, and transportation all the way to officiants. have a rating and review system. The higher the ratings and more positive the reviews should be an indicator for your consideration. Talk to your married friends that have used officiants, get their opinions and recommendations. When meeting with other vendors, ask them who they recommend and why. Contact the recommended officiants and get a feel for their personalities. The Officiant you want should work well with you, not just physically but on an emotional level as well. Weddings are a very emotional event. From the planning all the way to execution, it’s draining and a good Officiant will recognize that and offer support. An Officiant should meet with you as many times as it takes for you to feel comfortable, be accessible for any questions, be prompt in their replies and guide you through the whole process, to choosing the right ceremony and assisting with vows, at no additional cost. You want your personalities to match. It would be disastrous if your personalities clashed and your vision went one way and the Officiant went another. Set up a meet and greet with them. The only thing you should need to bring is a list of questions to ask. Once you are certain that this is the Officiant for you and your personalities match, confirm the booking with them. That may include paying a deposit or signing a contract.

provide and what does the bridal couple need to provide? e) How long before the wedding do I need to get my license? f) Do we need to go through premarital counseling? g) Do we need to take the license down after the wedding? h) What is all included in their fees? Many officiants have a special place for performing weddings that are smaller in size. A park—a creek or even a backyard make it more intimate. Search your ideal location and ask about pricing. It could be no extra charge and much more sentimental for you. Officiants cannot marry any couple without the proper legal licensing. If you have forgotten your marriage license in the hectic scramble to get ready, a mock ceremony can occur, but a real ceremony won’t. That would have to be done at a time when the license is present. Some Officiants will refuse to perform a ceremony if the parties are intoxicated. Honestly, if you have to be intoxicated to get married, is it the thing you really want to do? You can expect your Officiant to be professional and conduct themselves in a caring, mature manner, to dress appropriately for your occasion and to be polite and respectful of you and your guests. It is the legal responsibility of the Officiant to register the license. If your Officiant requests that you to take it to the courthouse after your wedding--REFUSE to do so! The Officiant is registered with a county in the state and is legally obligated to have the license registered. As an officiant, for me, meeting with couples is the best! Sharing thoughts and ideas—hearing of your hopes and dreams. It’s just a unique excitement. ♥

that you have found the perfect reception location, it’s time to think about overnight guestrooms for your guests. Arranging for a block of rooms is a relatively easy step in your planning process. One thing that is helpful to know right from the start is that the term “block of rooms” is a little misleading. Most hotels do not reserve a physical area of the hotel for your group, but rather protect a special group rate for you and your guests. There are a few points to keep in mind when you are searching for the perfect hotel.

Location

You will want to select a hotel that is close to your wedding reception venue and is convenient to get to. Hotels within walking distance or a short shuttle ride away should be your first options. Guests like to stay close to the event locations whenever possible.

Number of Guestrooms or blocks needed

To determine the number of guestrooms you will need, count the number of out-of-town guests and then divide that number by two. Usually you will not need more rooms than this even if there are some locals that plan to stay at the hotel. If that number is higher than 20, and the hotel you are selecting has less than 100 rooms, you might need a block at two hotels. If the hotel has more than 100 rooms, one hotel is the way to go. That way most of

your guests will be in the same location and you will get the most benefits from the hotel. Many hotels have perks like upgrades or complimentary nights the more reservations you have so make sure to ask about this!

Courtesy blocks or Guaranteed blocks

The most flexible option is a courtesy block of rooms. You are not responsible for rooms that were not reserved within your block with this option. However, hotels will typically give you only 1030 rooms. If your block fills up, you can usually add more rooms as long as there are some available. Typically, there are no fees or deposits required for a courtesy block. Not all hotels will be able to offer a courtesy block but this is the recommended choice if it’s an option. With a guaranteed block, you are guaranteeing that your group will utilize the amount of rooms you set aside. If they don’t, there are usually attrition penalty fees assessed that you are financially responsible for. Most hotels will allow you to drop 10-20% of the rooms before they assess any penalty fees. Make sure you read the attrition clause in your contract so you know exactly what is expected of you. If this type of block is your only option, you should talk with your out-of-town guests to get an idea of how many plan to attend before you agree on the number of rooms with your hotel.

Cut-off date

This is the date the hotel will release the unsold rooms in your block. A good rule of thumb is to ask your guests to reserve their rooms by a date that is a week before the actual cut-off date. This will allow you to make reminder calls to those guests who may have forgotten to make their reservation. Once the cut-off date passes, the hotel does not have to honor your group rate and rooms may no longer be available for your group. If the hotel has rooms available, they are generally sold at a higher rate.

Reserving rooms

Once your contract is signed, you can start telling people about your block. Your contact at the hotel will give you a phone number to call, a link or a block code to make reservations online. It is important to include this information on your save-the-dates, invitations and on your personalized website. You will want to include the “reserve by date”

to emphasize the cut-off date of your room block. Don’t forget to make your own reservation!

Extra Tips

Before picking a date for your big day, think about what is going on in the community. If there is a special event in town, it will be harder to get the number of rooms you want and the rates will be higher. If you want to save your guests money and possibly get a few more benefits from the hotel, choose a date that is traditionally slow. For us in Minnesota, think January – April, November and December. Also remember that many hotels have private event space for your reception, rehearsal dinner, gift opening or send off brunch. Planning these events at the hotel will be a convenient option for you and your guests. Above all, remember to have fun planning your wedding! ♥
