Hot Wedding Trends
From
dangling décor to portrait booths and gifting lounges, here are the trends we’ve spotted for the year ahead. Trends are getting bigger and badder than ever before (in the best way possible!). Some are totally over the top and others are just perfect for adding a personal touch to your celebration. When it comes to couples who are ballin’ on a budget, you may be thinking some of these are out of your financial comfort zone but there are infinite ways to pull inspiration from this year’s trend report and spin it to match your celebration style (and wallet). You have our full permission to steal these ideas for your wedding day. Unique Invitations Get your guests excited to celebrate from the very beginning—today’s wedding correspondence really stands out. Plexiglas invites, foil stamping and glow-in-thedark ink are a few of the stationery trends catching our eye. Bespoke illustrations and bold envelopes (think: shocking fuchsia with white ink) are other ways to get noticed. www.idoido.org - Select Your Chosen Category

The Gift Lounge This deconstructed welcome bag is perfect for destination weddings. Instead of stuffing and delivering a gift for your guests, let them do the work (they’ll be glad you did). Set up a room full of swag (snacks, drinks, local sweet treats) and guests can choose their favorite things. Best of all, you (or your family or wedding party) can greet guests in person when they arrive. If your friends and family are split between a couple of hotels, set up a table of goodies at the exit of your welcome party for a truly memorable party favor.
Metallic Dresses and Breezy Silhouettes
Asking for What You Really Want From cash to mountain bikes and even museum memberships, we love that couples can ask for just about anything under the sun these days—including nothing at all. Charity registries are on the rise along with experiences, like a pottery class or a private cocktail session with an expert mixologist. Don’t worry, you can still register for classic wedding gifts like fine china, upgraded cookware and that fancy espresso machine you’ve had your eye on for years. Or do both!
Color Comeback Neutrals and pastels have paved the way for a total return to color. Expect to see pops of bold shades and bright color pairings. Pantone named Greenery the Color of the Year—it’s vibrant and earthy, making it perfect for all seasons. This fresh hue is symbolic of “the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. We expect to see this shade of green in everything from floral arrangements to colored linens.
16
Sparkly gowns—gold, silver and metallic beading—flooded the bridal runways. The ball gown is making a comeback too, perfect for a formal evening wedding. Also hot? Breezy silhouettes and airy skirts. These effortless dresses (think: flowing fabrics like tulle and organza) have an ethereal vibe and are well suited for a destination affair or even a second look. Detachable skirts, floral embellishments and off-theshoulder looks will also be making their way down aisles this year.

Going Green Décor trends are going au naturel. If you can’t celebrate under the stars, bring the outside in. Add some oversize potted trees to a ballroom for an instant forest effect. Or incorporate natural elements like wood and stone into your table settings. Greenery (not just the color) continues to trend—it’s easy to manipulate and can give your décor an

ceremony in the round gives guests a more intimate connection with your vows. Cocktails before your “I dos”? Why not! Couples are mixing up the timeline and kicking things off with a celebratory sip.
Grand Getaways Think of this exit as a fresh take on the classic sparkler send-off. Surprise your guests with an unexpected getaway on the back of a motorcycle, in a horse-drawn carriage or by helicopter. For a twist on the trend, have a really memorable entrance instead. Anything goes—and just think of the photo ops! Games Galore In an effort to entertain guests, couples are turning to the tried and true: games. From interactive Mad Lib wedding

Furry Friends Animal lovers take note: The hottest wedding guests have four legs and super soft coats. From bunnies to donkeys, couples are incorporating more than just their pets into their wedding. dates of your wedding day—they don’t have to match your theme or wedding style. They’re the perfect place to be playful and infuse your celebration with your personalities or favorite things. Create a dramatic display that can double as a photo booth backdrop or cards that are also party favors, like splits of champagne or a boxed edible treat. Fun Food Presentations The new trend in food is equal parts yum and fun. Menus are being carefully curated with favorite eats and local specialties (think: deep-dish pizza for a Chicago after-party). But the presentation is almost upstaging the food. Self-serve bars and food installations, like a hanging acrylic shelf piled high with cheese and charcuterie, are instant wows. Set up a doughnut wall with gourmet selections or treat guests to a full-service sundae bar. These interactive stations will give your friends and family something to do and talk about, long after the wedding. Party Portraits We’re loving the new twist on the traditional photo booth—portrait studios. Much like a photo booth, there’s a designated space and, in some cases, props. But instead of four rapidfire shots, there’s a live photographer asking you to vogue for the camera. You get a stellar classic portrait perfect for your gallery wall. Your guests will be lining up, trust us. Vintage-loving duos might opt for an illustrator instead, who can sketch guests in their finest duds. Or you could even hire a live painter to commemorate your day. This doubles as fun entertainment for your guests and a keepsake for you. Dangling Décor Hanging accents are an instant wow 18
factor, and they always get noticed. Suspend flowers from ceiling beams or string market lights from barn rafters for added ambience. Hanging décor will get guests looking up too, which is handy if you’re trying to downplay the venue’s color-clashing carpet. Towering candelabras and organic centerpieces will continue to be popular table décor. Translucent Cakes Not quite frosted, not quite bare, the almost-naked cake is a perfect blend of two styles, and ideal for a less formal celebration. These confections are usually lightly iced in buttercream and topped with fresh flowers or in-season fruits that hint at the flavors of the cake filling. ♥ Source: www.theknot.com

Venues & Catering
Venues & Catering written by:
Brit Haskins – CLASSIC HALL EVENT CENTER brit@classichallmn.com
Congratulations
on your engagement! There will be a lot of excitement during this time as you prepare for your walk down the aisle. Whether you are having a short or long engagement make sure to enjoy this time and center the wedding around the two of you! Two of the biggest decisions the two of you will have to make is when you want to have your wedding and where you want to have it hosted at. This will have to be a main priority as venues book 1 to 2 years in advance. While touring the different venues, you will want to make sure that you choose the one that best fits who the two of you are as a couple. Once you get the venue chosen, everything else will fall into place. Some of the items you will want to figure out prior to touring different venues are how many guests you plan on inviting, what season you want to have your wedding in, if you are set on your date or is it flexible, and what your overall budget is. Once you get these items figured out it will help you narrow down your options. You will be surprised on how many new possibilities will open up for you once you figure out all the options for your wedding. There are multiple trends when it comes to choosing a venue for your wedding. 22
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Reception Venues, Caterers or Rehearsal Dinners
Many couples are looking for the new “it” wedding venue. Some of the trends that are becoming more popular are: Museums, Gardens, Loft Buildings and Rooftops. Barns and outdoor spaces are still being sought after. Once you choose your venue, the next step will be to find a caterer if your venue doesn’t already have an exclusive one. One of the best ways to find a caterer is through referrals from friends and family. By going through referrals, you will be able to find out if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with working with certain ones. While calling the different caterers, you will want to make sure they have your date available and if they offer complimentary tastings. When you are at the tasting you will be able to get to know the caterer and the quality of the food they are presenting for your wedding. Once you get done with the tasting you should be able to tell if the caterer is the right fit for you. If not, do not feel obligated that you

23
have to choose them. Most of the caterers will present their pricing as “price per plate” or “price per guest”. If they present it this way to you, make sure to find out what fees they add on at the end. Most places will add on the sales tax, service fee and a gratuity. In the end, the actual per-person cost may be a lot more than you originally had budgeted for. Catering trends are constantly changing. The two most popular styles are plated dinners and buffets. Fresh foods provided by the local markets and farmers are becoming more popular along with the traditional food trucks. Cocktails offered at weddings are starting to become just as important to the couples as the food that is being served. No matter if your meeting is with the venue or the caterer make sure to ask questions, and always read the contracts before you sign anything. Even if you need to, take a couple days to really go through it before making your decision. ♥ 24

Questions to ask the Venue: • Is my wedding date available? • How many events do you book in one day? • What kind of deposit is required? Is it refundable? • Is there a cancelation policy? • Do they have exclusive vendors that you must use? • Do they require any minimums? • What is the max capacity they can accommodate? • Are there hidden costs like a service charge, gratuity, cleaning fees or overtime charges? • When can you get into the facility to set up? What is the tear down policy? • Will there be a point person on-site the day of the wedding?
Questions to ask the Caterer: • Is my wedding date available? • Do they require a deposit? Is it refundable? • What is the cancelation policy? • How many staff members will be there the day of the wedding? • Do they offer complimentary tastings? How many people can come to the tasting? • Do they provide linens, napkins and place settings? Is this included in the “price per plate”? • When are the final numbers due? When do you have to have the menu finalized? • What is the cleanup policy? • Do they offer discounts on kid meals? Vendor meals? • Do they offer a cake cutting service? Is there an additional fee?

The Steps to Choosing Your Wedding Photographer
Unlike
the work of your other wedding vendors (music, flower arrangements, cake), photographs aren’t things you can hear, smell, taste or even see at first. Careful research and selectiveness regarding professional skills, artistic style and personal demeanor are important when choosing your wedding photographer.
Settle on a Style
Before you begin researching photographers, you’ll need to decide the type of photography style you prefer as that will help determine which photographer you’ll want for your wedding. Ask your prospective photographer to show you their portfolio of the following styles. Traditional Documentary Portraiture Fine Art Edgy and Bold www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Photographers
35
Do Your Homework
Start your search by reading reviews from recent newlyweds and browsing local listings, especially members of the Central Minnesota Wedding Association. Carefully review potential photographers’ websites and blogs to check out wedding photos they’ve shot. That’ll give you an idea of their style. The design of the website will have clues to the photographer’s personality and sensibility. Check their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages too. Is their client feedback positive? How did the photographer respond?
Set Up Interviews
You do need to meet your potential photographers in person. If you like what you see on their site—and their fees are in your ballpark range—call for their availability for your wedding date. If they are already booked on your date, see if they have an associate or can recommend another shooter with a similar style. Set up in-person meetings with two to four potential photographers
36
who are available on your wedding date to look at more of their work and see if you connect at your meeting. Do talk about your venue, wedding style and your expected style of the photos.
Review Full Wedding Albums
Don’t base your decision solely on what you see in a photographer’s highlights gallery or album. Photographers show prospective clients a portfolio of their best pictures, all from different weddings, so you’re seeing the best of the best. Ask to see two or three full galleries from actual weddings they’ve personally shot to give you a clear idea of the complete collection of photos.
Review Albums with a Critical Eye
When you review a photographer’s album, look for the key moments you want captured: Did they get photos of both the bride and the groom when they locked eyes for the first time? It’s important that you detect sensitivity
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Photographers
in capturing people’s emotions making sure the photographer’s subjects look relaxed. You do want to see smiling shots of your friends too.
Make Sure Your Personalities Mesh
Don’t underestimate the importance of liking and bonding with your photographer. Your photographer should be excited by your vision when you describe it. To get the best photos, hire a pro that has a firm grasp of social graces but is bold enough to explore
unique images. Your photographer will be shadowing your every move so the more comfortable both of you are with the photographer, the better the photos will turn out. The best photos come from a photographer who is assertive enough to seek great moments and connective enough to coax relaxed smiles and natural stances from guests but certainly calm enough to be a positive influence. The best photographer asks lots of questions and is a very good listener.
Confirm Your Shooter(s)
Include specific stipulations in the contract about who will be the photographer on the actual day. Check whether the photographer will bring any assistants to your wedding. If you have room in your budget, consider hiring a second shooter. Many top-notch photographers include a second shooter in the contract, but if this isn’t a part of the deal, you may want to ask about the possibility.
Compare Packages
When interviewing candidates, ask for a
general range based on the photographer’s standard “fee” and package, plus their standard rates for the type of album you’ll want and the amount of coverage you’ve booked them for be it the full day or a portion of that day. Find out what’s included in their standard package, plus range for any extras you may want, like an engagement shoot, special effects or additional coverage, so you can compare rates. Clearly identify exactly how many hours of coverage are included. Ideally,
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Photographers
37
you want your photographer to be there from when you start getting ready until after you make your grand exit from the reception. Many include about 6 to 12 hours to cover everything from your preceremony events (getting ready with your bridesmaids and first-look photos) to the end of the reception. Consider paying for more coverage if there’s a chance you’ll run over and you want your photographer there until the end (overtime is generally a higher hourly rate).
Be Clear About Your Rights
Many contracts stipulate that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, even the ones of you. That means the photographer can use them promotionally (on their website or blog; use them for publication or feature them in ads). That also means you can’t just post the digital proofs they send you—most photographers have a policy that you can only share watermarked images or images with their credit on them. Also, unless you negotiate otherwise, if you want to print the images yourselves or order an album from another source, you’ll have to buy the rights to the images.
38
Get the Postproduction Details
Discuss the timing of how many images should I expect ….. are they high resolution or low resolution ….. will I be able to get prints made myself ….. does the photographer retain the rights to the images … will the proofs I see be the retouched versions or does retouching take place after I select my photos? Inquire about retouching options and special effects that may be available within the content of your contract or are there additional costs. ♥ Source: www.theknot.com

Questions to ask your Photographer: Todd & Lisa Myra - Todd Myra Photography photos@toddmyra.com
• Can I meet you for a consultation? It is important to spend some time not only talking business but also chatting informally with your potential photographer. Since you’ll be spending most of your wedding day with them, you’ll want to be sure you are comfortable with their personality and communication style. • Can I see your portfolio? Higher prices do not necessarily mean high quality photos. Make sure you like the photos of the photographer that will be shooting your wedding. Also make sure you see a complete wedding in an album, not just a “best of.” • Do you use high-end professional equipment? Churches and reception halls very often present low-light situations. Even outside might present low-light situations depending on time of day, time of year and weather. Does your photographer have the equipment to handle this? • What is your backup strategy? We have all heard the stories of the photographer who lost all their images. Make sure your photographer is careful about their images, backs up to multiple hard drives, including off-site locations. • Do you have backup gear? It is essential that your photographer have two of everythingcamera, flash, etc. This insures that even if something breaks, the photographer can keep going. • Are you insured? Professional liability ensures that not only will you and your guests be taken care of should disaster strike, but is one more sign that your wedding photographer is a true professional. • How many times have you worked specifically as a wedding photographer? Someone may be a great family and baby photographer, but wedding photography and working within the time constraints of the day is entirely different. Make sure your photographer is up to the task. • Are you the wedding photographer who will actually take our pictures? If not, can we meet the person who will be? Some studios hire others to shoot weddings. You will want to be sure to ask all of these questions of the person that will be photographing your wedding and as said before, make sure you are comfortable with that person.

Just
like you have a specific vision for the style and ambience of your wedding, it’s likely you have a unique vision for your wedding band. If you’ve been eyeing Instagram or Pinterest you’ve probably seen hundreds of different styles of engagement and wedding rings. Trends in jewelry emerge rapidly so finding something that feels like “you” can be overwhelming! Wedding planning itself can be stressful with all the decisions to be made and options to consider. Inquire with your jeweler what your options are and they’ll help you navigate your preferences. Start shopping for your wedding bands early in the process and give yourself time to research what you really want. Don’t hesitate to ask about custom options if you’re not finding exactly what you’re dreaming of. Bring in inspiration that you’ve found to help illustrate what you’re envisioning. Your jeweler can discuss ways to make your dream a reality and recommend the best way to achieve it. Custom designing a ring with your jeweler can be a fun and rewarding process to creating a one-of-a-kind piece that’s uniquely your own. Most engagement rings are designed with a complementary wedding band, so 46

if you prefer something that’s perfectly matched start there. Some brides are choosing two matching wedding bands - one for either side of the engagement ring to complete a symmetrical and balanced look. Whether you add one right away or wait until an anniversary, this look can create a major impact! Or, if you’re looking for something a little different, try mixing bands of different color metal or diamond shapes. Incorporating a contrasting warm-hued metal like rose or yellow gold against silver-color metals like white gold or platinum has a striking effect. Stackable styles allow you to create your own collection - and allows for additional rings to mark other special
occasions like an anniversary or the birth of a child. Other brides are gravitating toward styles with vintage-inspired touches like intricately carved bands, gemstone accents of ruby or sapphire and delicate beading called milgrain work along the edges of rings. A nod to Edwardian and Victorian eras of style, modern takes on these classic and feminine styles are decidedly fresh. Designs like these add elegant and interesting details while being understated. Whether you’re all about the sparkle or prefer more subtle details, choose a special band (or bands!) that represent your own distinctive taste and you’ll love them for a lifetime.

Invitations & Cakes
Invitations & Cakes written by:
LeRae Rengel – Rengel Printing lerae@rengelprinting.com
When
does the first impression of your wedding happen? At the church? At the reception? Actually, the true first impression happens when you formally ask your family and friends to join you on your special day – with your wedding invitations. You can create invitations that are uniquely yours. The wedding invitations are your guest’s first glimpse of your wedding. They set the tone through design and specific color combinations, and suggest the event’s overall level of formality. The first steps are to decide on the vision, the colors that you want integrated into the invite and the quantities needed. You may choose to create a traditional, formal wedding invite or a modern invite based on the wedding motif that you envision. An invitation can consist of several customary elements: an outer envelope; the invitation; a reception card; a response card that is self-addressed or includes a selfaddressed, unsealed envelope; an accommodations card; thank-you cards; and, in some cases if time allows, a save-the-date card or magnet. In designing a custom wedding invite, you will want to apply style and uniqueness to each piece, keeping them all socially correct and applying wedding invite etiquette as well. They can be worded and 56

arranged in countless ways to reflect the style of the occasion. You should integrate your wedding colors into your invitations to tie your theme together. There are a large variety of ink colors, type styles and paper to choose from to create a unique wedding ensemble. In designing a custom invitation, please allow enough time for the actual design, proofing, printing, assembling, addressing and mailing. Invitations should be mailed out six to eight weeks prior to your big day. Request RSVPs with the response card two to three weeks prior to the event. Remember to order at least 25 extra for last minute guest additions, mistakes and to have a couple for keepsakes. Creating a custom wedding collection will truly be a personal reflection of your special day! They will create your love story from the first impression to “I Do.” ♥
Wedding Cake Trends & More Multiple Choices
Sometimes more than one dessert is necessary, especially in the case of larger weddings. Whatever your wedding theme or guest list size may be, you don’t need to restrict yourselves to just one cake.
Bite Sized Tiers
From donut walls to well, the scope of your imagination, non-traditional dessert displays featuring bite-sized desserts are still taking weddings by storm. Stacked tiers of bite-sized treats can make great alternatives to tiered wedding cakes, not to mention they’re easier to assemble and serve.
Floral Statements
Wedding flower arrangements aren’t just for bouquets and tablescapes anymore.

57
Use them to add a whole new element of glam to your wedding cake.
Metallic Makeover
Copper, silver and gold tones have made their way into plenty of modern wedding palettes, and we don’t expect them to disappear anytime soon.
Neutral Tones
A mix of modern and traditional, wedding cakes that take on a neutral color palette are anything but boring. Shades of gray and tan can make just as much of an impression as a colorful wedding cake without straying too far from the white frosting norm.
Cheese, Please
Who doesn’t like cheese cake? Your wedding “cake” with the tasty
58
elements of a well-crafted cheese cake certainly can be your very special dessert course.
Barely Frosted
Slightly less casual than the naked cake trend, semi-naked cakes take on a more “dressed up” rustic vibe. Whether you prefer a dramatic floral cake topper or simple details, a light frosting serves as a great canvas for any confectionary vision.
Individual Servings
Instead of one large wedding cake, serving individual desserts at each place setting is an increasingly popular wedding cake trend. It’s a great idea to consider for your smaller wedding events.
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Invitations or Cakes
Greenery Details
Greenery wedding cake décor still makes its way into many minimalist and earthy weddings. Pantone named Greenery as its 2017 Color of the Year, so this shade will make a creative debut in more themes, palettes and desserts. So, which wedding cake trends are you looking forward to most?
Let Them Eat Pie
Ironically a favorite wedding cake trend doesn’t even involve cake. Although buttercream and fondant are popular choices, they aren’t for everyone and that’s okay. Pies as an alternative to the traditional wedding cake will make your wedding reception feast very memorable. ♥ Source: www.mywedding.com/weddingideas/food-beverage/wedding-cake-trends

Formal Wear
Formal Wear written by:
Jen Mayers – Wedding & Tuxedo Connection wtconnection@meltel.net
By
the time you’re ready to start shopping for your wedding dress, you’ve probably searched numerous Pinterest boards and magazines looking for your dream gown. Most bridal shops will only allow an hour-long appointment. And, while one hour is plenty of time to try on dresses, if you can narrow down your options before stepping foot in the dressing room, you’re in for a much more pleasant, laid-back shopping experience. One easy way to narrow down your gown options is to choose a silhouette that will highlight your best-loved assets and conceal your less-favorable areas. To start, figure out which of the five featured body type’s best defines your figure: Petite Hourglass Lean & Straight Plus Size Busty And remember, you may not fit squarely into one category — most people don’t! Determine your budget before shopping. That will help the consultant pull gowns that www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Dresses & Tuxedos
65
won’t break the bank. If it’s not your first time shopping and you’ve fallen in love with a gown somewhere else, let your consultant know that as well. If you have a photo, show them the dress “to beat”. This will help guide the appointment as well to make sure your consultant is putting you in silhouettes you know you love. Remember, once you’ve found “the one” it takes 6 months to get your gown in the store once ordered. Custom gowns can sometimes even take a little longer. Make sure to give yourself enough time to order and have alterations done before your wedding. You don’t want to be stressing out about your dress showing up on time because you waited. There are always the rush fee options but you’ll want to avoid having to pay more than necessary for your wedding dress! Along with finding the right gown for your body type, there are a few other things that can help make your wedding dress shopping experience as easy as possible. First, trust your consultant and don’t be afraid to try on gowns they suggest which may be outside of your traditional comfort zone. Sometimes “the one” isn’t one you would have even 66
thought to try on, until you do! Also shop with a supportive crew! Miss Negativity does not deserve a trusted spot on your “yay-or-nay” team. Finally, if possible, do your makeup and hair. It will be much easier for you to imagine wearing one of these gowns on your wedding day if you feel done up, like a bride. Looking to make a statement for the groom and the rest of the bridal party? One super-hot trend right now is the navy or slate blue tuxedo with a cognac brown shoe! We are also seeing lots of colorful suspenders with bow ties replacing the classic more traditional vest and long tie too. However you can’t beat a sharp, classic black tuxedo! Decide what is going to fit your theme. Are you having a rustic, destination or church wedding? Once
you’ve decided on the color of the tuxedo, it’s time to decide who is wearing what color? Often, the groom will match his bride in white or ivory and the groomsmen match the bridal parties color as well. The ushers and dads will usually be in an accent color or black. And if you have a little ring bearer, he will usually match the groom. Pocket squares and boutonnieres can add that little pop of color you may be looking for as well. Well, what are you waiting for? Book your appointment and start making those lists! ♥

Silhouette Guide Ball Gown – The Ball Gown is fitted at the bodice and has a waistline that leads to a full skirt. It compliments hourglass body types. A-Line – The A-Line is fitted at the bodice and angles out to the ground and resembles the outline of an ‘A’. This is the most universal silhouette because it tends to look great on every body type. Trumpet – The Trumpet hugs the hips and flows out in an A-line around the mid-thigh. It tastefully compliments a woman’s shape without being confining. Mermaid – The Mermaid fits closely to the body to the knees. It then flares out to the hem. This style looks good on women with a straight shape. Sheath – The Sheath is usually semi-fitted from top to bottom with a straight skirt and has no waist. This will be flattering on many shapes. Goddess – The Goddess is a new shape that seamstresses refer to in describing any shape that flows freely from the bust line. In most cases, this Goddess has an empire waist so the dress will flow freely. It also flatters most body shapes.

Questions to consider when choosing wedding attire: Dresses: • Make a look book. • Determine your budget. • Think about the wedding location. • Consider the temperature. • Scout dresses at retail stores - note what dresses work best with your body type. • Make your buy about eight months before the wedding. Tuxedos: • Consider ALL the costs when choosing a tux shop. • Don’t put the tuxedos to the bottom of the things to do list. • Don’t be rushed into giving a deposit to formal wear shops at the Bridal Show. • Choose a formal wear shop that is close to the location of your ceremony for several different reasons. • Proceed with caution when a store claims infallibility under the guise that all the tuxedos they rent are “in stock.” Try and have everyone measured 2 months before the wedding to ensure you will secure the tuxedo you want. • Choose a formal wear provider who offers you a personal consultation by appointment. • Don’t worry about your groomsmen coming from out of town. • Don’t go crazy trying to visit every tux shop in person. • Don’t be swayed by “Designer Names.” Trends: We are seeing a lot of brides going away from the solid white or even ivory gowns. They are opting to go for some color whether it’s a light gold or champagne underlay or a rich caramel color. These colors tend to compliment certain skin tones better than the solid white/ivory. Hot colors we are seeing are Navy for the guys and a rich wine or burgundy color for the girls.
Enjoy the experience!

The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Rentals
ReceptionDécor & Rentals Guide
Depending on your wedding venue, you may need to supply some, if not all the rental items required to host your wedding reception and serve your guests. Here is your ultimate wedding rentals checklist. When you book your reception site, be sure that you understand what’s included in the rental fee. Each venue is different, so you have to clarify with the site manager which items the venue provides and which wedding rentals you must provide. As always, make sure that everything you have agreed upon is put in writing. Depending on the venue – and the type of reception you’re planning - you may need to supply some, if not all the items listed below. Make it fun! Consider renting crowd-pleasers such as cotton candy makers and popcorn machines. For outdoor areas, offer games like bocce ball and a beanbag toss. Your best source for rentals? The Central Minnesota Wedding Association members listed on page 84 of this Décor and Rentals section. How much do you need? Consider at least three to four dishes, glasses, stemware and flatware pieces per guest. For a cocktail hour, you’ll need at least three glasses for 76
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Decor & Rentals
each person. And order at least 10 extra chairs for your ceremony, plus 10 extras for your cocktail party and reception in case any chairs arrive cracked or broken.
wedding rentals checklist
Tables Here’s a breakdown of the types of tables you may need: Guest Tables 36-inch rounds seat 4-6 guests 48-inch rounds seat 6-8 guests 60-inch rounds seats 8-10 guests 6-foot rectangle seats about 8 guests Cake Table(s) Appropriate size depends on size of cake, whether you’ll also have a groom’s cake, and whether you’ll display both cakes on the same or separate tables. 48inch round usually works well. Head Table Seats bridal party. Often consists of rectangular tables placed end-to-end. Sweetheart Table In place of head table, consider a small table that seats the bride and groom
while the rest of the wedding party sits at guest tables. Buffet Tables & Service Components If you have decided on a buffet dinner, you’ll need to arrange several food stations, such as meet carving, etc. Your chosen catering source will likely include buffet table service components such as chafers but make sure to confirm that with them. If the buffet service components are not included your chosen décor and rental provider should have the needed buffet service equipment. Gift Table Size depends on the number of guests you are expecting. Guest Book Table A small table for your reception guest book. Chairs For a seated dinner or buffet, you will need to provide seating for all reception guests. For a buffet-style cocktail reception, you may able to get away with enough chairs for half or more of the
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Decor & Rentals
77
total number of guests. You may need to rent or purchase chair covers separately. High chairs for children should be available from your chosen rental source. Linens Guest linen tablecloths, table runners, napkins for both cocktail party and reception, as well as luxe or vintage linens for the cake, gift, sweetheart and photo tables. Also consider chair covers: they are a great way to add color and texture to your space. Chair Covers Chair covers may be included with the rented tables and chairs, or they may need to be rented in addition to your chairs and tables. Tableware For a formal sit-down reception, tables are usually set with complete place settings. At a buffet reception where guests serve themselves, plates and silverware may be located at the buffet table. Dishes Cocktail-party appetizer plates, china patterns, chargers, dessert plates, footed bowls for desserts. Don’t Forget: Unbreakable plates for the little ones — no one wants to deal with expensive breakage. Stem & Glassware Champagne flutes, bar glasses in various sizes, red and/or white wine glasses, beer mugs, soft-drink glasses, water glasses. Don’t Forget: Martini glasses for dessert servings; appropriate glassware for your signature cocktails. (Know what you’ll serve before you order your glassware.) Flatware Utensils for the cocktail party, plus 78
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Decor & Rentals
knives, forks and spoons for the reception dinner. Don’t Forget: Serving utensils, if you’ll have family-style service at your reception. And don’t forget serving bowls and platters. Most rental sources offer gorgeous hammered silver or copper serving bowls and chafing dishes. Tent A large tent or canopy may be required for receptions held outdoors to protect you and your guests from the sun or rain. Options: Tents and canopies come in different sizes and colors. A smaller tent (20x20 feet) will accommodate about 40 guests at a sit-down dinner, a 20x40 about 200, and a 60x100 about 500 or more. Depending on the shape of your reception area, you may need to rent several smaller canopies rather than one large one. Take pictures of the site for references
for your tent rental company. Although they should survey the facility themselves before they set up the tent, the pictures are a good reference for them when you first set up an appointment. Heaters/Air-Conditioners You may need to rent heaters if your reception will be held outdoors and if the temperature may drop below 65 degrees. There are electric and gas heaters, both of which come in different sizes. Gas heaters are more popular since they do not have unsightly and unsafe electric cords. Dance Floor The size of your dance floor will depend on how many guests you expect. They can range from 12x12 up to 20x30 or larger. Get some graph paper and make a floor plan, and bring this with you when you determine your rental and décor needs. ♥

Questions to ask for décor or rentals: • Is the first visit a free consultation? • Ask for references as well as the decorator’s experience in the industry. • Ask if the decorator has any special deals or other ways to give you the best value for your money. • Ask for a “door quote,” which is the full amount you will pay, including all fees, before signing a contract. • Ask about the policy on deposits and refunds. • Are there any photos of similar weddings that may be emailed to you, or is there a portfolio available for you to look at? • Do you have delivery fees, set up/tear down fees or a damage deposit requirement? • What is the payment schedule?

How to Choose Your Wedding Florist
Wedding
flowers are one of the most important elements of your big day. Not only do they provide color and decoration, but they symbolize life, growth, and rebirth. Good wedding flowers are also a conversation starter and after the food and dress, one of the things guests will remember most. The right wedding florist can help make wedding planning a breeze, while a difficult florist can make designing your wedding a total nightmare.
Here’s how to pick the right florist for your event ……. Finding a Florist
Many wedding websites have vendor listings that include photos, reviews, and general pricing information. Or browse pictures from real weddings held in the same town as your event--typically the florist information will be listed alongside the images. Make appointments to visit at least three different florists. When you visit, take a look around: Do you like the arrangements that are in the store windows? Are the flowers in the cooler fresh and bright? Is the shop clean and organized?
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Florists
87
Ideally, your florist will have vast previous experience as a wedding florist and will have many photographs of previous wedding flower arrangements and bridal bouquets. Make sure that the pictures are recent, and comprehensive – not just one bouquet, but that they show all the bridal bouquets and centerpieces from a particular wedding.
Share Your Ideas
Bring swatches of the bridesmaid dress fabric, pages from magazines with bouquets and floral arrangements that you like, the type of container you’d like to use, and any ideas you may have. Create a Pinterest board of your favorite wedding flower ideas and share the URL with the vendor in advance of your meeting. Make sure that the florist is receptive to your ideas, and that they are willing to listen to your vision. If you find the florist 88
is pushing you in another direction or criticizes your choices you’ll want to go with another vendor. You should feel very comfortable with this person. You’ll also want to make sure that they think your budget is realistic for your ideas.
When to Book Your Wedding Florist
This depends on how long you have to plan your wedding, but a general guideline is to start talking to your florist about 6 to 8 months before your wedding and sign a contract with them about 4 to 6 months before the big day. Here are details you’ll need to have finalized before your florist can finish your complete contract:
Ceremony Site:
You’ll need to have booked this, and know how many arrangements you’ll need
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Florists
to decorate it. Do you need garland? Are you planning on aisle decorations?
Reception Site:
This should be booked, and you should be aware of the prominent colors of the venue (so the flowers don’t clash), and what spaces you intend on decorating in addition to the guest tables (coat check, restrooms, entryway, etc).
Guest List:
You’ll need to know approximately how many wedding guests you are having, which dictates how many centerpieces you’ll need. (Most round catering tables seat 8, 10 or 12 guests; rectangular tables generally seat 8 people).
The Wedding Party:
How many bridesmaids you are having, and the color of their dresses; the number of corsages (for mothers, grandmothers, and sometimes readers or other special guests) and boutonnieres (for the groom, groomsmen, ushers, and sometimes readers or other special guests).
Other Parties:

Questions to ask the Florist: • Can you see photographs or live examples of past work? • When do you need a final count for table centerpieces? • Can you provide items such as vases or candelabras? • Do you know who will be creating your flowers? Be sure to get to know the person who will, so you can trust them. • How many weddings is the florist handling on the day or weekend of your wedding? • Can you recommend any seasonal flowers that would help keep cost down? • How much is it to secure my date? • When is the final balance due? • Do you deliver? Is there a fee? When would you be delivering the flowers or when would we pick them up?

On
the day of your wedding music will be one of your guests’ first experiences. Music helps sets the atmosphere and theme of your wedding day. Creating a musical atmosphere that reflects your style doesn’t happen by chance. Here are some suggestions to put you on the path to assuring your wedding music will reflect your vision for your wedding day. Consider hiring live music. The performance of live music creates a sense of wonderment and excitement. Professional musicians can respond to events happening in real time. This is especially important during the wedding ceremony when unexpected things can occur. An experienced musician knows how to handle such situations and adapt the music in real time. When looking to hire musicians you can get a good sense of their personalities and talent by visiting their web sites and listening to their music. Ask your officiant, your wedding planner and your recently married friends for their recommendations of musicians. Online reviews by other couples will give you good insight into their experiences with musicians as well. Contact musicians that appeal to you. Do they respond promptly? Do they seem excited to learn more about your wedding? Do they make you feel comfortable with

95
their manner of communication? Do they offer you opportunities to hear their music? Do you like their style of music? If answers to these questions are, ‘Yes’, ask to arrange a meeting with them or hear them perform. Be prepared to share your song ideas and the style of wedding you envision. Ask the musicians for their ideas on songs that they can perform to enhance your vision.
Questions to ask your music professionals.
• Do they provide a free consultation to help you plan your music? • How much experience do they have? ie. How many weddings have they done? How many years performing? • Do they have a strict repertoire or are they willing to learn new songs? • Do they play the style of music you are looking for? • Are they willing to accompany vocalists or other instrumentalists if necessary? • Will they attend your wedding rehearsal if you want them to? • What backup plans can they offer if they are not able to perform for your wedding?
•D o they provide you with a written contract? •F ind out the total cost to you including mileage, set up fees, rehearsal, practicing with other musicians, learning new music, etc. There are many wonderful music options for your ceremony and reception... solo instrumentalists, ensembles, bands, DJs, or a combination. Decide what atmosphere you wish to create for your cocktail time, your dinner and your after dinner or dance. Consider what type of instrumentation can create that atmosphere? Live music? A DJ? This is where actually hearing the musicians and DJ perform will give you insight into the best fit for your wedding. NOTE: If you prefer using recorded music for your ceremony or reception rather than hiring a music professional, check that your wedding facility has adequate sound equipment available. Ask if a sound technician is available. Take the stress out of your music planning by hiring experienced and talented music professionals that you can trust so that you can ENJOY the music and your wedding day! ♥
Musical Choices for your Wedding Day
Musical Choices written by:
Larry Rowe – Impressions Mobile Music larry@impressionsmobilemusic.com
With
so many choices for your wedding day from the colors of your wedding to the dessert you’ll be serving for your guests, you can easily become overwhelmed with the entire planning process. First and foremost, enjoy your time planning. If there is one area that you should spend the time doing your research 96
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Music & Entertainment
and making sure you find the right fit for your wedding, it is your entertainment. Keep in mind that many guests and newlyweds say what they remember most from a wedding (besides how beautiful the bride and groom are) is the entertainment. As each wedding is as unique as the couple themselves, make sure to find a company willing to listen to your needs, wants and desires for your wedding day. A true professional will take the time to understand what your vision is for your wedding day and will discuss and help you create the day you want. Your DJ doesn’t just play music. They also become your Master of Ceremonies (MC) and help guide your day along. From calling to seats for meals, introducing the wedding party for the Grand March to the all important announcement of the First Dance… A true professional will be able to make sure the masses can hear the important aspects of your evening. When starting to think what services you all need for your wedding day, start by envisioning the music and sound needs for your wedding ceremony. If it’s at a church, everything is likely taken care of. However becoming more popular are ceremonies outside of a church. Your ceremony itself will contain four main components: Prelude, Processional, Entrance of the Bride, and Recessional. If you have more than 50 people showing up to your ceremony, you’ll likely require additional sound, microphones and music for your ceremony. Make sure to talk to an experienced entertainer who has done many ceremonies. Still the majority of events a DJ will perform will be the wedding reception itself. This is where you can really distinguish the professionals from the bedroom weekend DJ hobbyists. Experience, emcee skills
and professional equipment is a must. Having an entertainer that can speak clearly on the microphone is so often overlooked. You’ve now found the company you want to go with. Congratulations, check an important item off your list. As you continue to create your wedding day experience for you and your guests, make sure to add your own personal touches. There are many ways that a DJ can continue to enhance your surroundings and add additional flair throughout your wedding. From showing off and pin spotting your wedding cake, to capturing the crazy moments with a Photo Booth to creating an ambiance throughout the venue with uplighting… There simply

97
are many ways to create a wedding uniquely yours. Pin spotting is a great way to enhance a particular area of your venue that you want to accentuate. Some popular pin spotting areas have included candy tables, card tables, gift tables or to show off your beautiful wedding cake. Many newlyweds want to show a slide show of them growing up and pictures of them growing together. This is a great way to show your guests your history. Typically, this can be played during social hour or during dinner. If you do a service like this, some companies may have the technology to then have music videos played throughout the night. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. What will the pictures say from a night of Photo Booth pictures? Photo Booths are extremely popular and a fun added touch where your guests will be able to bring something home with them from your wedding day. Most companies will offer fun props, immediate pictures for your guests and personalized printing layouts. Some companies will offer you a thumb drive of all the pictures at the end of the night. What better way to add a personal touch like no other than having a personalized monogram. A personalized monogram can include your wedding date, both of your names and can be created in many different styles. Popular areas to shine your monogram include above the head table or on the dance floor. By far, the most popular add-on we see is uplighting. Uplighting can add a visual impact throughout your reception hall or outside around a building. Your imagination is the limit. Uplighting is the most affordable way to decorate your reception venue and create an ambiance unique to your event. By placing lighting fixtures on the ground and focusing them upward, uplighting 98
can add color and depth to an otherwise boring wall or column. It also adds energy and vibrancy to your photos! As you can see, there are many options to make your wedding uniquely yours. From the time your first guest arrives at your ceremony to the last dance of the evening, a DJ can enhance your wedding experience through sound, music and lights. Don’t be afraid to create a space that will leave your
guests amazed at your visual design. With today’s technology, your options are seemingly unlimited. Don’t let anything hold you back as you prepare for one of the most important days of your life…your wedding day!! While researching your entertainment company, there are some questions you should be asking each prospective vendor for your wedding reception: • Is our wedding date available? Pretty obvious; however, some of the best DJs book up out to two years in advance. • Do you have any pictures of your set up? Look at photos of setups that they have. You want to

does sound different when played at a higher volume.
• How long have you been in business? How many weddings have you done? Experience… experience…experience. Not only do you want someone experienced with various dance floors, but one that is knowledgeable on the equipment they are using.
• Have you done events at our wedding venue? Some venues may have hidden surprises and your entertainment company should be properly prepared. Ask the venue itself if they have any DJ recommendations.
• What is your backup plan for unforeseen issues that could arise? Do they have backup equipment, cords or even a DJ to fill in if necessary? Life happens and they should always be prepared. • Will you be the DJ at our wedding? If not, can I meet/talk to my DJ prior to your wedding date? Are they a single operator or do they have multiple DJs working for their company?
•A re there any additional services that you provide, such as uplighting, slideshows, pin spotting or a photo booth? When it’s all said and done, make sure you’re comfortable with who you invite/hire to be a part of one of the happiest days of your life…your wedding day! ♥
• Are you part of any professional organizations? Such as Central Minnesota Wedding Association!! Companies that continue to work on networking and growing their business tend to take more pride in the product they put out. • Do you have any recent reviews? What better way to get a feel for an entertainer/DJ than from recent reviews. • How big is your music database? If you don’t have a song requested, what is your plan to get it? You may only need 150-200 songs for the entire night, but if you allow the DJ to take requests, he should be prepared with a library of over 30,000 songs. Make sure they legally download their music. Transportation 101Arrive in Style
Transportation 101 written by:
Tami Spanier – Pearl Limousine, Inc. info@pearl-Limo.com
As
you plan your special day your thoughts should include how you and that special person you are marrying are going to “arrive in style” for the most anticipated day of your life. Whether you are choosing a limousine, a vintage car, a bus, or a horse-drawn carriage there are many options available to you. Limousines and charter buses have grown in popularity in recent years. Wedding couples have been making transportation arrangements in order to keep their wedding party together throughout the day; from the ever popular church or park to the reception to the all-day package that is open to the couples every whim. Wedding guest transportation also continues to be a growing trend. Whether your party is large or small, your style is elegant or relaxed, your budget is limited or extravagant the following information will help direct you down the path to trouble free transportation arrangements. • Work with a “reputable” company when choosing your transportation. Check their BBB rating (Better Business Bureau). Proper Licensing, Insurance, and Driver Qualifications are important! Your “safety” should be foremost in your mind.
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Transportation Services
109
• Chose an appropriate “size” vehicle for your needs. Comfort should be paramount! Note the broad shoulders/ height of your groomsmen and the fullness of the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses. • Reserve as “early” as possible. If your heart is set on a particular limousine or option; make sure to get your signature on the dotted line for your date and time. However, don’t assume there is nothing out there if you want to book the week before. You may be surprised what is still available. • Letting “cost” be the deciding factor in determining what type of transportation you choose or what company you work with may not be the best idea. Sometimes what appears to be a great price turns into a disappointment in the end. Do your homework, details matter! Certain package options including, split time, all day, or minimum hour time frames may be worth your consideration. (Remember that the gratuity is usually an additional expense.)
•G et a “written” confirmation sheet or contract. That way there is no misunderstanding as to when and where your transportation is expected. •“ Understand” what you have reserved. Knowing what is included in your wedding package, Red Carpet Service, or what is customary goes a long way in you having a smooth ride. Remember, even though you are paying for the vehicle, any illegal behavior/activity is still illegal and prohibited. • How will the driver/chauffer be “dressed”? Most professional transportation companies have set attire for their personnel. Ask what your driver will be wearing. • Is “alcohol” included in the price? Limousine and charter companies may provide non-alcoholic beverages along with the glassware set up, however, MN State Statutes prohibit companies from providing alcoholic beverages. Check with your provider as to what type, if any, alcoholic beverages may be brought into the transportation choice you have made. • As mentioned above “Wedding Guests” transportation is a growing trend. If you are serving alcoholic beverages throughout your reception, it may be wise to provide a safe ride for your guests too. Some hotels and venues provide shuttle services but not all. Ask your transportation provider for their input. There are “economical” options available that could keep you from needless worry and/or liability. Whether you have chosen a limousine, a bus, or a buggy; chosen a full day package or just a ride from the church/ park to the reception, you can make these reservations at any time. Just don’t forget to “Arrive in Style”! ♥

Questions for your transportation provider: • What type of vehicle do I want? • Who do I want in the vehicle? (Options for parents/grandparents?) • How many hours will I need? • When should I reserve? • What is included? (Packages / Red Carpet Service) • Should I think about “Wedding Guest” Transportation?

How Do I Find The Right Officiant?
Officiant Services written by:
Kathy Arneson, Officiant – Always & Forever Officiant Services anofficiant@yahoo.com
He
got down on one knee and you said YES! EEEK!!! So much to do and such little time in planning the perfect wedding. Set a timeline for each event of planning. Contact potential vendors and set up meetings with each of them. Before you meet, write a list of questions you’d like to know the answers to, both personal and professional questions (not too personal). Your vendors should not mind at all and will be happy to answer your questions. There are several sites online that have various wedding vendors listed, apparel, floral, invitations, and transportation all the way to officiants. Many of these sites www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Invitations, Wedding Planning & Officiants
115
have a rating and review system. The higher the ratings and more positive the reviews should be an indicator for your consideration. Talk to your married friends that have used officiants, get their opinions and recommendations. When meeting with other vendors, ask them who they recommend and why. Contact the recommended officiants and get a feel for their personalities. The Officiant you want should work well with you, not just physically but on an emotional level as well. Weddings are a very emotional event. From the planning all the way to execution, it’s draining and a good Officiant will recognize that and offer support. An Officiant should meet with you as many times as it takes for you to feel comfortable, be accessible for any questions, be prompt in their replies and guide you through the whole process, to choosing the right ceremony and assisting with vows, at no additional cost. You want your personalities to match. It would be disastrous if your personalities clashed and your vision went one way and the Officiant went another. Set up a meet and greet with them. The only thing you should need to bring is a list of questions to ask. Once you are certain that this is the Officiant for you and your personalities match, confirm the booking with them. That may include paying a deposit or signing a contract.
Some questions to consider asking at your meet and greet:
a) A re there any rules or restrictions imposed by the church or officiant? b) W hat are the officiant’s fee and travel expenses? c) W hen would rehearsal be and is that an extra fee? d) W hat does the Officiant/church
116
provide and what does the bridal couple need to provide? e) How long before the wedding do I need to get my license? f) Do we need to go through premarital counseling? g) Do we need to take the license down after the wedding? h) What is all included in their fees? Many officiants have a special place for performing weddings that are smaller in size. A park—a creek or even a backyard make it more intimate. Search your ideal location and ask about pricing. It could be no extra charge and much more sentimental for you. Officiants cannot marry any couple without the proper legal licensing. If you have forgotten your marriage license in the hectic scramble to get ready, a mock ceremony can occur, but a real ceremony won’t. That would have to be done at a time when the license is present. Some Officiants will refuse to perform a ceremony if the parties are intoxicated. Honestly, if you have to be intoxicated to get married, is it the thing you really want to do? You can expect your Officiant to be professional and conduct themselves in a caring, mature manner, to dress appropriately for your occasion and to be polite and respectful of you and your guests. It is the legal responsibility of the Officiant to register the license. If your Officiant requests that you to take it to the courthouse after your wedding--REFUSE to do so! The Officiant is registered with a county in the state and is legally obligated to have the license registered. As an officiant, for me, meeting with couples is the best! Sharing thoughts and ideas—hearing of your hopes and dreams. It’s just a unique excitement. ♥

Wedding Planners Wedding Planner written by:

The
magical words “Will you marry me?” have been asked and you said “Yes!”. Once you say yes, there will be a ton of questions, ideas and opinions that will coming your way; and it can be overwhelming for a new bride. Planning a wedding can be a huge amount of work, and most couples will agree to this. When you hire a wedding planner you will be able to have the wedding of your dreams without all the stress that can go along with the planning aspect. A wedding planner will guide you through the planning process and the wedding day itself, and will assist you in any way needed. They will be able to find the appropriate vendors, suggest ways to budget wisely, and zero in on your ideas that you have for your wedding. Your wedding planner will also be able
to create a wedding-day timeline and will make sure the schedule stays on track – down to the smallest detail. Most locations have an in-house day of coordinator, but make sure you are clear on exactly what level of service they provide. Venue coordinators usually only handle day of issues and will offer you a list of the venue’s preferred vendors. Even though hiring a planner is an additional cost, they often end up saving you money in the long run. They can also definitely save you time and stress. They will be able to find the people necessary to make your wedding a success, such as photographers, videographers, caterers and florists. In most instances, they have worked with these vendors multiple times and may be able to get you a discount on

the services. Your planner will be your liaison during all vendor meetings, set up your appointments and help guide you through contracts. The perfect planner will also be able to fit the right combination of vendors together that will make your wedding go smoothly. The day of your wedding your wedding planner will be there to make sure all vendors are arriving on time to have ample time for their set-ups. Besides taking care of the vendors, she might also help with everything from getting the wedding party together for their photos, making sure the flowers are exactly what you ordered to calming your nerves. The most important thing to remember when hiring a wedding planner is the fact that they are working

for you. They should listen to your ideas, concerns and not go against your wishes. They should also be up front with you to make sure that the vision you have for your wedding is doable in the budget that you have set aside. Before interviewing potential wedding planners, you and your fiancé should have an idea of how much money you have in your budget, how many people you would like to invite and your preferred wedding date. After the interviews are complete, listen to your instinct. If the interview doesn’t feel right, then maybe that person isn’t a good fit for you and your wedding. You will be spending a lot of time with your wedding planner so it is very important to find someone who is compatible with you and your fiancé. ♥

The Experience is What Creates the Memories
The Experience is What written by:

hon·ey·moon
ˈhənēˌmo͞on/
noun 1. a vacation spent together by a newly married couple. “romantic hand-holding breakfasts together on their honeymoon” “It does not matter where you go; it is who you have beside you”
A
honeymoon has been a long time tradition for many couples. With prewedding planning can come, busyness and stress. The honeymoon sounds dreamy and a perfect opportunity to enjoy quality time. Most couples take this time to make it special and romantic just for the two of them, recognizing that this is a once in a life time vacation. No matter where you want to go or what you want to experience here are three simple steps in getting your planning started. Discuss together Work with a Travel Agent Have fun!
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Travel & Hotels
121
It is best to start planning your honeymoon 6-9 months in advance. In early conversation the two biggest items that come up are the destination and budget. The destination can be an important piece. Some will want to go somewhere they have never been, maybe an island you have dreamed of, or it could be a place you have been before and simply love! Where ever your discussion leads, add in what you want to experience!! One of the best ways to plan the perfect honeymoon is to take a moment and imagine your honeymoon. Then name off the top 3 to 5 things you see yourself enjoying and make a list. A few experiences are: Relaxing at the beach Enjoying Tropical Weather Couples Massage at a Spa Snorkeling Exploring Historic Sites For the Adventurous; Hiking, Biking & Diving Top Honeymoon Destinations: Negril, Jamaica Maui, Hawaii Riviera Maya, Mexico St. Lucia Once you complete both lists this is where having a professional travel agent can further help you! Finding a travel agent that is certified in honeymoon planning will not only help you create the perfect honeymoon but make sure it is extra special. For many this is your first vacation and it is a once in a life time vacation, so why not leave it up to the experts. They will focus on your destination & experiences and can also help you with your budget. A budget tip is to compare different price points and compare what you are getting from each package. This will help you know what the two of you are comfortable 122
spending and what you will get and enjoy from each package. When each option is laid out this can help you in what you select. Last step is to ENJOY because truly that is what your honeymoon is all about. Having great discussions and a travel professional on your side, you will be ready to relax and enjoy a vacation of a life time. It is your experiences that will create the unforgettable memories. ♼

Reserving A Room Block
Reserving A Room Block written by:
Julie Bartell – Elk River Holiday Inn jbartell@hielkriver.com
Now
that you have found the perfect reception location, it’s time to think about overnight guestrooms for your guests. Arranging for a block of rooms is a relatively easy step in your planning process. One thing that is helpful to know right from the start is that the term “block of rooms” is a little misleading. Most hotels do not reserve a physical area of the hotel for your group, but rather protect a special group rate for you and your guests. There are a few points to keep in mind when you are searching for the perfect hotel.
Location
You will want to select a hotel that is close to your wedding reception venue and is convenient to get to. Hotels within walking distance or a short shuttle ride away should be your first options. Guests like to stay close to the event locations whenever possible.
Number of Guestrooms or blocks needed
To determine the number of guestrooms you will need, count the number of out-of-town guests and then divide that number by two. Usually you will not need more rooms than this even if there are some locals that plan to stay at the hotel. If that number is higher than 20, and the hotel you are selecting has less than 100 rooms, you might need a block at two hotels. If the hotel has more than 100 rooms, one hotel is the way to go. That way most of
your guests will be in the same location and you will get the most benefits from the hotel. Many hotels have perks like upgrades or complimentary nights the more reservations you have so make sure to ask about this!
Courtesy blocks or Guaranteed blocks
The most flexible option is a courtesy block of rooms. You are not responsible for rooms that were not reserved within your block with this option. However, hotels will typically give you only 1030 rooms. If your block fills up, you can usually add more rooms as long as there are some available. Typically, there are no fees or deposits required for a courtesy block. Not all hotels will be able to offer a courtesy block but this is the recommended choice if it’s an option. With a guaranteed block, you are guaranteeing that your group will utilize the amount of rooms you set aside. If they don’t, there are usually attrition penalty fees assessed that you are financially responsible for. Most hotels will allow you to drop 10-20% of the rooms before they assess any penalty fees. Make sure you read the attrition clause in your contract so you know exactly what is expected of you. If this type of block is your only option, you should talk with your out-of-town guests to get an idea of how many plan to attend before you agree on the number of rooms with your hotel.
www.idoido.org/vendors - Select Travel & Hotels
123
Cut-off date
This is the date the hotel will release the unsold rooms in your block. A good rule of thumb is to ask your guests to reserve their rooms by a date that is a week before the actual cut-off date. This will allow you to make reminder calls to those guests who may have forgotten to make their reservation. Once the cut-off date passes, the hotel does not have to honor your group rate and rooms may no longer be available for your group. If the hotel has rooms available, they are generally sold at a higher rate.
Reserving rooms
Once your contract is signed, you can start telling people about your block. Your contact at the hotel will give you a phone number to call, a link or a block code to make reservations online. It is important to include this information on your save-the-dates, invitations and on your personalized website. You will want to include the “reserve by date”
124
to emphasize the cut-off date of your room block. Don’t forget to make your own reservation!
Extra Tips
Before picking a date for your big day, think about what is going on in the community. If there is a special event in town, it will be harder to get the number of rooms you want and the rates will be higher. If you want to save your guests money and possibly get a few more benefits from the hotel, choose a date that is traditionally slow. For us in Minnesota, think January – April, November and December. Also remember that many hotels have private event space for your reception, rehearsal dinner, gift opening or send off brunch. Planning these events at the hotel will be a convenient option for you and your guests. Above all, remember to have fun planning your wedding! ♥
