Moor Rover Bus

The main route to the Exmoor area is the M5 (J23 to 27). After this you will travel on smaller, quieter roads to reach your destination.

This flexible service is for walkers, cyclists, bird watchers, fishing etc. The Moor Rover will collect you from any prearranged location in West Somerset and drop you at the destination of your choice on Exmoor.

Village life Punctuating a stunning array of plunging valleys, moorland landscapes and coastal delights you’ll find the charming, tranquil settlements of Exmoor and West Somerset. Each with their own unique characteristics, all are delightful to explore.

Dulverton Dulverton is considered to be the Southern gateway to Exmoor, nestled between the rivers Barle and Exe which converge a mile or so down the valley. Used as a film location for the WWII film ‘The Land Girls’, birth place of George Williams, founder of the YMCA in 1821 and home of the Exmoor National Park Authority headquarters, Dulverton has several claims to fame! Find time to feed the ducks by the river, explore the good number of intriguing boutiques, fascinating gift shops and quality restaurants here. Dulverton is a popular spot only ten minutes away from Wimbleball Lake and five minutes from the Exebridge fishery. Lewis’s Tea Rooms, the Tantivy and Woods Restaurant are very popular, serving quality local produce. Tong Dam Thai restaurant and several pubs offer plenty of choice and variety for excellent food and fine ales. In the town centre you will find the National Park Centre and Heritage Exhibition Centre portraying a life gone by with recorded testimonials from local characters past and present.

There are many walks from the town – the riverside walks along the Barle being very popular. The wild open moorland of Winsford Hill on Exmoor is just a few miles North of Dulverton up the Barle valley. Not far away is the wild open moorland described in the novels of R.D. Blackmore. You will also find, 10 minutes away, the Exmoor Pony Centre.

South Molton South Molton is a busy market town with plenty to do especially for the sweet toothed where you can watch the bees working away in the honey farm or indulge yourself with a visit to the chocolate factory. The town itself is a mixture of medieval, Georgian and Victorian with a heritage trail helping visitors to explore its past. For the active there is a swimming pool and an indoor climbing wall nearby. There is also a good number of small shops, a pannier market open Thursday and Saturday mornings, a museum, a selection of pubs, restaurants and over 80 places to stay.

“High, rugged tree-clad cliffs that plunge dramatically into enticing sheltered bays” Combe Martin Combe Martin lies in a beautiful and fertile valley, or ‘combe’, on the North Western edge of Exmoor, at the centre of some of North Devon’s most spectacular coastal scenery. The approach to Combe Martin, along the coastal road, offers the visitor glimpses of some of the most stunning views in North Devon. The two headlands of Great and Little Hangman dominate the scene which greets visitors to the village as they journey down to the pretty sheltered harbour below. The beach at Combe Martin is a mixture of sand and pebbles which at low tide, extends into large areas of firm clean sand. There are also a number of small secluded bays within a short walk of the village centre – Wild Pear Beach, Sandy Cove and Newberry Beach are close by. An added attraction, especially for children, is the large number of rock pools. Footpaths head off in many directions from the village, and are popular with walkers who enjoy the spectacular and un-spoilt coastal views and the rugged majesty of the cliffs and heathlands of Exmoor. There are many viewing points, with easy parking, for those preferring to explore this magnificent area by car. 8

The main village street is over two miles long, reputed to be the longest in the country, and features a wide selection of inns, cafes and shops. As well as the Combe Martin Museum in the village centre there is the Wildlife and Dinosaur Park on the outskirts, where life sized animated dinosaurs live in the woods!

Lynton & Lynmouth Lynton and Lynmouth offer a spectacular combination of sweeping moorland with high, rugged, tree-clad cliffs that plunge dramatically into enticing sheltered bays. Surrounded by truly breathtaking views, Lynton and Lynmouth grew up slowly around two splendid deep and wooded river valleys, those of the East and West Lyn. The Victorians named them quite deservedly the “Little Switzerland of England”.

About a mile from the centre of Lynton is the awe inspiring Valley of Rocks. Dominating the valley is Castle Rock, while other strangely weathered formations bear names such as Ragged Jack and the Devil’s Cheesewring. The valley is populated by wild mountain goats – the only surviving group in England. The famous Cliff Railway operates at a gradient of 1:1¾ covering a vertical height of approximately 500 feet. Each car has a 700 gallon water tank filled at the top and emptied at the bottom, thus causing the lower car to be pulled up to Lynton, while the heavier car from the top descends to Lynmouth. Finally a walk up the East Lyn to Watersmeet offers a truly enchanting opportunity to discover one of Exmoor’s true hidden gems. Porlock Porlock is a beautiful example of a traditional Exmoor village with a long history. It is also a working village with a wide variety of shops supplying all that you need and you can be sure of a friendly Exmoor welcome in them all. This will be echoed in the pubs, hotels and restaurants to be found here. Exmoor Classic Car Museum and the newly refurbished Doverhay Manor Museum provide an interesting insight into the past. Porlock Weir is the unspoilt harbour which lies two miles to the west of the village. This quaint little harbour has a unique charm that has to be experienced. It also boasts the remains of a prehistoric forest, small parts of which are visible at a very low tide. It also has The Boat Shed Museum and a new Aquarium which is home to numerous species found in the Bristol Channel. The poets Wordsworth and Coleridge found Porlock very much to their liking and indeed Coleridge was interrupted by “a man from Porlock” whilst writing “Kubla Khan”; the consequence of which was that he lost his inspiration and never completed it.

Heading west beware of the infamous Porlock Hill which can be bypassed by the scenic toll road leading you on to the moor, Lorna Doone country and spectacular views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.

A great way to view it is from the West Somerset Steam Railway which stops just outside the village and offers a ride through twenty glorious miles of Somerset scenery, taking in the Quantocks, Exmoor and the coast.

Dunster

Central Exmoor

Dunster is a picturesque village located on the fringes of Exmoor. Characterised by thatched cottages, a unique octagonal yarn market and the turreted Dunster Castle, the village is steeped in history and contains in the region of two hundred listed buildings.

Heading for the heart of Exmoor you’ll find hamlets like Simonsbath where Simonsbath House has stood for 150 years. It was the only house in the Old Royal Forest of Exmoor which has a 31 mile boundary still perambulated every June by hundreds of keen walkers.

Once a thriving port known as Dunster Haven, when the sea retreated leaving the village high and dry, Dunster looked to the textile industry for its survival, quickly becoming an important wool trading centre. The yarn market was built by the Luttrell family in the early 17th Century and the villagers even began producing their very own yarn.

Exford, famous for hunting, shooting, fishing and riding, has a beautiful village green ideal for children to play, but if it is altitude you’re after, Wheddon Cross boast the claim to be the highest village on Exmoor dating back to the 1820s.

One of the few Exmoor villages that lies in the fertile valley of the River Avill (the inspiration for the famous hymn ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’), Dunster is surrounded by stunning landscape.

It’s from here you will get a bird’s eye view of Dunkery Beacon, part of the North Exmoor Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and part of the Dunkery and Horner Woods National Nature Reserve. This page (clockwise): Porlock Weir, Dunster Castle, Exford

West Coast

The West Somerset Coast has a plentiful offering, brimming with culture and heritage punctuated with coves and beaches all connected by the West Somerset Railway which can be heard gently chugging along through stunning countryside.

Minehead Minehead has a population of over 10,000 and is the largest town in West Somerset, sitting on the very edge of the National Park. Popular with visitors since the 17th Century when doctors began recommending bathing in its sea water, Minehead is ideal for lovers of the coast and the countryside. Offering traditional seaside fun with its promenade and long, sandy beach, the pebble beach near the harbour stretches for a mile with views across the Bristol Channel to Wales. North Hill, where Exmoor National Park begins, dominates the town and its green slopes can be seen for miles around. It is just a short walk from the centre of town, so without venturing far you can enjoy the countryside and even spot red deer and Exmoor ponies.

Walk up The Parade to admire the vibrant floral displays and sample the cafes, pubs and restaurants. There is a wide range of guest houses and small hotels, as well as camping and caravan sites including Butlins Holiday Park. Take a moment to discover the charming ancient harbour and old town, both enchanting to explore. The South West Coast Path, the longest trail in the country, also begins on the quayside and winds its way around the coastline to Poole in Dorset. The start is marked by a huge sculpture of a pair of hands holding a map.

Taking its name from the blue Wacet dye found in the cliffs, Watchet is a lovely little coastal town with an active Marina, Old Port, quaint houses and shops. Invaded and burnt by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th Centuries, you will often hear the toot of the steam railway as it stops here on its way between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard. At one time Watchet also had another railway, The Mineral Line, which ran between the town and Washford, then into the Brendon Hills. Used for bringing iron ore from the hills into Watchet, for shipping to Wales, the track has long gone but the route can be followed on foot. From the Esplanade, the Old Mineral Line Trail passes the Paper Mill and through countryside as far as Washford Station which is now the Somerset and Dorset Railway Museum. With many walks in beautiful countryside or along the coastline Watchet is an ideal base for exploring both Exmoor and the Quantock Hills. The Bakelite Museum in Williton is a museum of few words. At the entrance, a small sign introduces Bakelite “The material of a thousand uses”. Invented by Dr Leo Baekeland in 1907 Bakelite was the world’s first, and most successful synthetic plastic, in continuous production ever since. If you think it’s confined to old brown radios, think again. The museum, set over two floors in a 17th Century watermill is jam packed with Bakelite products of all shapes, sizes and colours. Just a couple of miles away in Washford, the picturesque Cistercian abbey of Cleeve boasts the most impressively complete and unaltered set of monastic cloister buildings in England.

The Quantocks Just to the east of Exmoor National Park you’ll find the Quantock Hills an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Quantock countryside is amongst the finest in England, popular for walkers, mountain bikers and riders. The first place in England to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956, and much is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Quantock Hills has a significant amount of the world’s maritime heathland within its boundaries. The AONB status serves to offer protection to this special landscape which contains habitat of international importance.

Somerset County Council, the National Trust and Forest Enterprise all have extensive estates in the AONB, but the majority of the land is privately owned by small to medium sized farms and estates. The hills themselves cover an area measuring some 12 miles by 4 and reach a height of 384 meters at Will’s Neck. From the tops there are extensive views of the Brendon Hills and Exmoor to the west, the Blackdown Hills to the south-west and the Bridgwater Bay area to the east. The hilltops are largely covered by open heathland which descends into areas of broadleaved woodland, forestry and farmland. Many combes, or valleys, each with distinct characteristics, cut into the side of the hills with villages and hamlets dotted around the lower slopes.

Where time stands still When you take in a deep breath to admire the view, sometimes it’s worth pondering for a moment on who else has done the very same thing on the very same spot as you. While some historic signs are obvious such as the ancient clapper bridge of Tarr Steps and the medieval village of Dunster, other more subtle signs of Bronze age and Roman occupation can still be seen.

Standing stones and circles such as the Caratacus stone on Windsford Hill date back to the Dark Ages 450AD – 750AD. With 200 scheduled monuments, castles and 1011 buildings of special architectural or historic interest it’s easy to see that if you dig a little deeper you’ll enter a world gone by.

Exmoor Horn Sheep For all of its beauty, Exmoor’s climate requires hardy sheep that can withstand harsh winters, and thrive off sparse upland hill pasture. Over many generations the Exmoor Horn has adapted itself perfectly to this environment and is a very effective grazer for sensitive landscapes. By grazing these distinctive upland pastures, the Exmoor Horn Sheep produces lamb of outstanding flavour and texture. They are also one of the few hill breeds to produce wool of a very fine quality.

Local farmers’ markets are the perfect place to find local produce. Buy direct from the people who have spent their time lovingly growing and making their goods. The produce is fresh – no long journeys or freezing of the produce.

The 2010 Exmoor Food Festival provides a showcase for local produce from a variety of independent food and drink producers based in the scenic Exmoor area.

A National Park Exmoor was designated a National Park in 1954 ensuring that you, and generations after you, can be assured that its natural beauty will be protected for everyone to enjoy. It’s an incredible place and it’s not hard to see why so many visitors fall under its spell on their first visit. Here’s our round up of Exmoor’s naturally impressive portfolio.

• Covering 267 square miles, Exmoor is one of the smallest National Parks but still manages to boast the tallest tree in England at Nutcombe Bottom, near Dunster, also a great site for picnics! • Exmoor also boasts the highest cliffs in England, (as in the Guinness Book of Records), Great Hangman 800 feet. • Dunkery Beacon soars 1,704 feet above sea level and much of the 34 mile coast path is around 800 - 1,000 feet above the sea. • The Exmoor pony is currently classified by WWF and the Nature and Rare Breeds Survival Trust as ‘critically endangered’. The world wide population is around 1,200, but the actual breeding population is less than 400, making it more rare than the Giant Panda. • Exmoor boasts 243 species of bird and there are over 1,000 different flowering plants and grasses on Exmoor.

• The Red Deer is Britain’s largest terrestrial mammal. They get their name from their summer coat which goes a deep chestnut red, but in winter they grow a thicker darker brown coat. Once in danger of extinction during the 17th Century due to over-hunting, Exmoor now has the highest number in England. • Worldwide peatlands are huge carbon stores, but damaged areas release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere through oxidation processes. Each hectare of moorland actively accumulating peat will lock up approximately 1 tonne of carbon from the atmosphere every year. Exmoor has roughly 190 sq km of moor and heath with peat soils.

• At Porlock Weir the shingle ridge was probably first formed more than 8,000 years ago and has been sustained, on and off, by stones from cliff falls at Culbone. • At Combe Martin, Lynmouth and Porlock Weir there are small harbours that used to be busy with coastal trade. Now sailing and fishing for pleasure are their mainstay. • Some private houses on Exmoor had their own water driven generators, but perhaps the most unusual use was a wheel at Woolhanger which provided the power to drive the bellows of a pipe-organ! • At County Gate there is a building once used as a smuggling den for liquor from Glenthorne which has a cellar as big as the building (now filled in) once used for hiding their goods. • Old Barrow was a roman outpost trading point for Iron Ore, which the Simonsbath locals dug up for the Romans.

• The Bristol Channel has the second highest tidal range in the world after the Bay of Fundy in Eastern Canada. • North Hill was a tank training ground during World War II and still has tanks buried there! • Exmoor has nearly 4,000 known archaeological sites, and more discoveries are being made. These sites represent some 8000 years of human activity on Exmoor. • Exmoor is one of the leading destinations for Sustainable Tourism and the first National Park to achieve the Europarc ‘Charter for Sustainable Tourism in protected areas’. • With about 50 sheep to every resident, farming has for a long time been the main industry until more recent years where tourism has taken over. • The Exe Valley was voted by the Times in 2009 as one of the UK’s best places for autumn colour.

• 4000BC Buffalo and Bison were hunted at Larkbarrow.

The Tallest Tree in England In 2009 a Douglas Fir tree in Dunster forest was confirmed as the tallest tree in England measuring a massive 60.5 meters. The 4,000 hectare forest also boasts England’s tallest magnolia tree and both can be seen via a new ‘all abilities’ access trail. Visitors can get up close to the trees to appreciate their size and enjoy the spectacular Dunster forest. www.thecrownestate.co.uk

Walk on th wild sid Exmoor is blessed with having it all. It is one of the few National Parks that has a spectacular coastline with the highest cliffs in Britain. There is a good chance of meeting the rare Exmoor Pony and if you are quiet and observant, seeing the majestic Red Deer. Exmoor is one of the smaller National Parks and has always had that ‘friendly’ feel to it. You can be high on the moor without feeling totally isolated. Remote farmsteads dot the landscape and rushing rivers point you towards the sea and civilisation. The best time to walk on Exmoor is in the spring and autumn, although the winter lends itself to gorgeous frosty mornings when the ground is crunchy underfoot and the frost gleams from the trees. The walks on Exmoor are diverse and rewarding, we are certain that you will enjoy them. The variety of scenery really is what walkers notice when visiting Exmoor. Every few miles the scenery changes from high cliffs, open moorland, deep river valleys, lakes, shingle beaches, ridges,

The Trail passes through numerous towns, including Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Lynmouth and Ilfracombe.

Two Moors Way

The Macmillan Way West

The Two Moors Way links the National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Starting at Ivybridge on the southern edge of Dartmoor and finishing at Lynmouth on Exmoor’s North Devon coast it also crosses some beautiful mid-Devon countryside.

Macmillan Way West is a 102 mile, fully waymarked branch-path leaving the main path at Castle Cary in Somerset and heading westwards across the Somerset Levels, the Quantocks and Exmoor to Barnstaple.

Tarka Trail

Walk 36 miles through the stunning Somerset countryside of the Quantock Hills, the Brendon Hills and Exmoor, a landscape that inspired Coleridge to produce some of his best known work. From Nether Stowey on the Quantock Hills, where Coleridge lived for three years, walk the quiet and unspoilt northern fringes of the Quantock Hills.

180 miles in a figure of eight in the northern part of Devon, a stretch of the route makes use of the Tarka Line Railway. The waymarked trail follows the route taken by Tarka the Otter, written by Henry Williamson.

Pass through the villages of Holford, West Quantoxhead and Bicknoller in the little known Brendon Hills, and on through the villages of Monksilver, Roadwater and Luxborough. Then across Lype Hill to Wheddon Cross, the remote Exmoor moorland fringes of Dunkery Hill, to the woodland village of Horner to reach Porlock, the end of your route, on the spectacular South West Coast Path.

Guided Walks Many people prefer to walk with a guided group so that they don’t have to worry about the route. You can enjoy the company of like-minded people and learn from a knowledgeable local guide about the area you are visiting. Each year the Exmoor National Park Authority joins with other local organisations to provide a programme of guided walks designed to introduce the visitor to the many areas and aspects of Exmoor.

Since the Tour of Britain first came through Exmoor in 2007, cyclists have been flocking to follow in the professionals footsteps.

Before going for any ride it is essential that you check your bike over and ensure that it is in good working order and safe to ride.

You’ll see many club cyclists following the Exmoor Cycle Route, a 56 mile circular route, tracing the original Tour of Britain route which is breathtaking in every sense of the word! Many families will also benefit from bringing bikes to explore more gentle routes off the beaten track, and when you know the Moor Rover bus will take you and your bike to the top, those challenging hills can suddenly become your friends! Trail Running, Climbing & Canoeing Climbing Exmoor has some of the UK’s highest sea cliffs on its North coast with the most spectacular scenery. The Valley of Rocks in Lynton is a popular spot for climbing, with some graded routes. Other coastal cliffs provide perfect areas to practice rock climbing skills in a bouldering environment, as well as there being a variety of climbs along the Exmoor coast. These areas are not for the faint hearted, requiring experience and advanced climbing skills, as well as tidal knowledge.
