Included in this booklet are useful telephone numbers and maps to guide you through your journey. For further information on bus services throughout Somerset contact:
0845 345 9155 or email transport@somerset.gov.uk For further information on bus services throughout Devon contact:
0845 155 1004 or email devonbus@devon.gov.uk HELPFUL HINTS TO USING THIS GUIDE: Public Transport timetables are laid out in numerical order. Bus operators are permitted to introduce, withdraw or vary services by giving the Traffic Commissioner 56 day’s written notice. If you are not a regular user of a particular service it is advisable to check timetable details with the operator before travelling. Some services may only operate on certain days of the week. A map for the Exmoor area bus services can be found in the middle of the booklet. Services do not operate on Sundays or Public Holidays unless otherwise stated. Some services operate with financial support from Somerset County Council or Devon County Council and these are indicated with background shading.
Every care is taken to make sure that the timetables are accurate. However we cannot accept responsibility for any inaccuracies or omissions, but we would be grateful to be advised on any errors.
If you have difficulty reading this publication we can supply individual timetables in large print, on audio cassette, disc, arrange translation into different languages or provide a member of staff to discuss the details. For more details contact Somerset County Council on 0845 345 9155. OUR EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES PROMISE is to provide all services of equal quality which meet your needs and fulfil your rights. You can expect us to treat you fairly, with respect and dignity and to be understanding of whoever you are and whatever your background.

The 24 Hour Clock ADD CLOCK All services in this booklet are presented in the 24 hour clock format which has been the more usual format for public transport timetables. To read times of the 24 hour clock all you need to remember is that after midday, the times shown have 12 added to them – for example: 4pm is shown as 1600, 5:30 pm is 1730 and so on. A clock face with the 24 hour notation is shown here to help you. The time shown by the hands as an example would be 1552 if it was afternoon or 0352 if it was early morning.

WELCOME TO EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK Exmoor is home to a unique landscape of moorlands, woodlands, valleys and farmland, shaped by people and nature over thousands of years. High cliffs plunge into the Bristol Channel, and cosy pubs and tearooms offer delicious local produce. On Exmoor it is still possible to find tranquility and a sense of peace as well as rediscover your sense of adventure; catch a glimpse of wild red deer, be amazed by dark skies full of stars, and explore villages full of character. An inspiring landscape Exmoor National Park may not be the largest National Park in the UK, or the wildest, but within its 267 square miles it contains am amazing variety of landscape that provides inspiration and enjoyment to visitors and residents alike. Large areas of open moorland provide a sense of remoteness, wildness and tranquility rare in southern Britain, while spectacular coastal views, deep wooded valleys, high sea cliffs, fast flowing streams, and characteristic hedge banks topped with beech trees all combine to form a rich and distinct mosaic. A wealth of wildlife The moorland, woodland, streams and farmland of Exmoor support a great diversity of wildlife including herds of wild red deer, the rare Exmoor Pony, rich lichen communities, rare butterflies, bats, and other species uncommon in southern Britain. Salmon still return from years at sea to travel up rivers such as the Exe and Barle to the same spawning grounds they hatched from. Treasuring the past The landscape of Exmoor tells the story of how people have lived in, exploited and enjoyed Exmoor over the last 8000 years. Burial mounds on high ridges, unique and ancient patterns of standing stones, cliff top Roman forts, astonishingly preserved medieval villages and incredible Victorian industrial engineering are all there to be explored. Looking to the future In many ways Exmoor is a deeply traditional place, where rural skills and knowledge are still valued, and locally distinctive breeds such as Exmoor Horn sheep and herds of free-living Exmoor are a common sight. But Exmoor is also a place with an exciting future, where “green tourism and sustainable energy is encouraged and our moorlands are valued for their ability to provide clean water and store Carbon.

CAR FREE, CARE FREE EXMOOR There are many advantages to using public transport to get about and explore the National Park. You can enjoy the view to the full and leave behind the strains of driving. Public transport operators are another source of information about the area and you avoid worries about finding parking in congested towns or leaving your car in remote spots and best of all, are not restricted by a parked car, allowing you to take a linear walk, catching the bus at a different place to where you got off. CATCHING THE BUS You do not have to be at a bus stop to catch the bus – the bus driver will stop anywhere along the route, when hailed, as long as it is safe to do so. DOGS Dogs are permitted on buses, at a small charge, as long as they are well-behaved and are reasonably clean – at the driver’s discretion. WALKING IN THE NATIONAL PARK The bus services on Exmoor provide wonderful opportunities for getting out and exploring on foot some of the country’s most beautiful scenery – dramatic coastline, steep wooded combes, open heather moorland and picturesque villages. Remember to wear good, strong footwear when walking in the countryside and be prepared for changes in the weather, even in the summer. EXPLORE MOOR Visit www.exploremoor.co.uk for ideas, inspiration and information on enjoying a car free, care free trip on Exmoor. There are itineraries to help you plan a car free day out, links to local accommodation, attractions and food and drink establishments and a series of circular and linear walks all accessible by public transport (staff at the National Park Centres - see page 6 -will also be happy to advise you). The site also includes an interactive transport map, timetable links and information on other car free opportunities on Exmoor.
