Keep Your Heart Happy
February is Heart Health Month!
from Melissa Olson, In Tune Nutrition
CoEnzyme Q10, most commonly referred to as CoQ10, is an important nutrient for muscle function. The heart is arguably the most important muscle we have! CoQ10 is needed for your muscle cells to make energy.
Our bodies manufacture CoQ10 and we also get it from several foods. It is typical for CoQ10 production to slow down with age.
If you take a statin medication, it may be important to take a CoQ10 supplement. Statin medications interfer with the body’s ability to manufacture its own CoQ10. When muscles don’t have enough CoQ10, they can struggle to make enough energy. This may result in achy muscles and sometimes cramps.
We can get CoQ10 from many food sources. Beef heart is the highest source of this nutrient, containing 3-4 times as much CoQ10 as any other food source. Beef liver is the next highest source. After that, other good sources include oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines as well as beef muscle meat. There is also a little CoQ10 in nuts and seeds, chicken, eggs, and several vegetables.
Eat as many foods as possible with this valuable nutrient and consider supplementing CoQ10 if you take a statin or are advancing in age. If you would like to know if you could benefit from a CoQ10 supplement, we are always here to help you evaluate that potential need.

I recently joined the team at Northwest Association for Blind Athletes (NWABA) as the Director of Philanthropy. With 25 years in the nonprofit sector, I’ve dedicated myself to causes I’m passionate about. My own sweet mother was blind from the age of seven and I was drawn to the mission of NWABA which is to empower those who are blind or vision impaired. This organization truly touches my heart, providing life-changing opportunities through sports for youth, adults and veterans across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and beyond. NWABA athletes gain self-confidence, independence, vocational skills and lifelong relationships. Want to learn more? Drop me an email!
