Dear Friend,
Dear Friend,
Dear Friend,
Dear Friend,
When I meet people in McMinnville, they usually say, “Oh, I know you. You ’re the doctor that I ’ve seen in the ad with your son Chris, from the Bachelorette. ” Well, I want you to know a little more about that picture and why I use it in my ads. Years ago in High School in Philly something happened that changed my life. I hurt my back playing football. Really bad! I could hardly walk. I remember the instant I felt that knife in my back. My Dad took me to Dr. Hill, our family chiropractor who adjusted my back.

When I meet people in Beaverton, they usually say, “Oh, I know you. You’re the doctor that I’ve seen on YouTube with your son Chris, from the Bachelorette.” Well, I want you to know a little more about that picture and why I use it in my ads. In 1976, when I was studying to be a chiropractor, I received an amazing treatment at age 26 that totally changed my life and got rid of my chronic headaches, sinusitis and snoring from falls, bumps and thumps in sports, even a few fights growing up on the streets of Philly. It is called the Bilateral Nasal Specific Treatment from my teacher Dr. Stober, at the University of Western States in Portland. And all I could say then, even now, was WOW! After that first treatment, I was able to breathe so much better through my nose. And my headaches? Felt like a knife was taken out of my head. Even my vision improved from needing glasses to not needing glasses. At age 26, you learn how to put up with a lot, but I was at the “end of my rope,” desperate, in spite of being a competitive athlete pitching in the semi-professional Portland City League. Once I had that adjustment, “the lights went on for me” and I knew at that moment I wanted to learn this special technique, developed, practiced, and taught by Dr. Stober for over 30 years before I had my first treatment in 1976. I was so committed to learning his technique that I spent over 1,000 hours over a 10-year period observing and studying with him and am now a leading expert. I became his protégé and the only student to treat him for his chronic headaches he suffered with from a bad head injury as a kid, leading him to develop this special, non-surgical treatment. I also truly believe he saved my son Chris from a lot of suffering as well.
front of our eyes, my wife and I could see the shape of his head changing. I took over Chris’s care from there and he became an All-Star baseball pitcher and soccer player in high school, a walk-on at the University of Portland, and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 11th round and the 354th pick and pitched for them for 5 years. One just never knows how valuable a Bilateral Nasal Specific treatment and sound nutrition can do for a person’s health. It's strange how life is because I have treated many patients since 1976 with chronic migraines, sinusitis, snoring, concussions, whiplash, birth trauma, and other conditions related to blows to the head or difficult births. Here’s just one testimonial from a recent patient. And there are reviews as well as
on my website: www.nasalspecific.com
Well all I can say is WOW! When I left Dr. Hill ’s office, I could stand up straight and walk. And the pain was gone! I knew at that moment I wanted to be a chiropractor, even though I was supposed to follow in the surgical footsteps of my great uncle who founded Nazareth Hospital in Philly – and cousin – who was an orthopedist. After undergraduate college at Schiller University in Heidelberg Germany, and pre-med studies at Temple University, I was accepted at the University of Western States in Portland, drove across the country, started in the fall of 1976 and graduated in 1981. And as they say, the rest is history. But before settling in McMinnville at the Dunn Chiropractic Clinic which was founded in 1922, I had the good fortune to travel with and take care of professional Broadway and Ballet dancers, Jockeys, the 1984 Italian Olympic Team Track and Field Division and many other professional athletes while in Italy.
and I started noticing improvements after the first few treatments. I’ve had over 9 treatments now and my sinuses have been completely clear. The results of his treatments are, according to my wife, I no longer snore. I don’t have sleep apnea anymore. I’m sleeping through the night, and I am breathing really well with no blockage in my nose. It’s amazing.

Now, My CONFESSION is that I don’t heal anyone!! I never have. I don’t treat or cure any of the problems patients come to me with. Here’s how it works: I make a specific adjustment to the sphenoid bone in your head. Your brain and nervous system then function better. It’s your body that does the healing. And I’ve had amazing results in practice since performing this special, non-surgical treatment thousands of times since 1976. Unique offer:

rish culture — a blend of folklore, superstition, and Catholic beliefs — is known for their lucky symbols like shamrocks, leprechauns, and horseshoes. But the phrase ‘the luck of the Irish’ wasn’t actually about good luck — originally it was bad luck! This was due, according to Elizabeth Stack, Executive Director of the Irish American Heritage Museum, to the high fatalities of Irish laborers during the gold rush. A big reason for these modern lucky symbols is due to Irish immigration into the U.S., as the Irish brought symbols of their culture as a means of comfort in a strange new land. And of course, like storytelling, the symbols changed over time. These days, the luck of the Irish is legendary and their symbols are popular worldwide.
You may not know this (I didn’t!), but shamrocks are not the same as four-leaf clovers. Shamrocks actually have three leaves, grow in clumps, and come in green, purple, or white. Clovers grow alone and usually don’t have four leaves, so four leaf clovers, as we know, are extremely rare. The shamrock is the true Irish symbol of luck, as St. Patrick used the shamrock, which has three leaves, to describe the Holy Trinity. Yet, for some reason, perhaps due to its rarity, the four-leaf clover took over as the more popular symbol.
The leprechaun, which we know from pop culture, may be rooted in the Irish belief of fairies, who supposedly live among us but stay hidden with magic. Interestingly, the leprechaun is believed to be one class of fairy among many, not a stand-alone magical creature. The leprechaun, of course, is a widely recognizable symbol, known as the mascot of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Lucky Charms, but especially known are the potential rewards of finding a leprechaun and getting a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. There are countless designs for kids’ leprechaun traps online, but they are more for fun and celebration than catching the real magical creature.
Horseshoes are definitive in Irish culture for many reasons. In folklore, the devil appears at a blacksmith and demands shoes, so the blacksmith nails burning hot shoes to his hooves. The devil walks away in pain and swears to keep away from them forever, thus the idea of horseshoes warding off evil spirits. Additionally, early Western Europeans believed iron was magical and could drive away evil, such as malevolent fairies and witches – which is why witches ride broomsticks, not horses. Then there’s the number of holes in horseshoes, seven, known worldwide as lucky: seven continents, seven colors in the rainbow, seven seas, seven days of the week. And there are two ways you can hang a horseshoe for good luck. Hanging a horseshoe heels up (like a U) keeps the good luck from running out of the shoe and inside the building. And hanging a horseshoe heels down allows good luck to flow down on everyone who walks underneath it. Sometimes people would even bury a horseshoe under the cornerstone of a new building for good luck.
For many of us, our garages are like an oversized storage shed. While we may still have room to park our vehicle(s), the remaining space is often relegated to storing all of the junk we have no room for inside. And because most of us access our homes through the garage, not the front door, we are constantly aggravated and even sometimes embarrassed by this situation. If you find yourself wishing your garage was a more attractive, organized, and functional space, look no further than Garage Experts of Portland to turn those dreams into a reality.
I had the pleasure of speaking with owner/general manager Kirk Block. He and co-owner Pat Nichols, who are lifelong friends and lifelong residents of the Pacific Northwest, are committed to 100% Customer Satisfaction. They install only the finest (industry leading) epoxy and polyaspartic floor coatings, cabinets, and storage solutions. Their products are made right here in the U.S. and come with a lifetime warranty. And because Garage Experts is a franchisor, working with Kirk and his team means you are benefiting from local ownership backed by the strength and stability of a national brand.
Of course, the quality of any custom job is only as good as the crew doing the work, and Kirk was proud to point out what a fantastic team they’ve assembled. Miles Case, their production manager, has been with them since day one and has
proven to be an incredible asset. A veritable encyclopedia of knowledge (coming from a background in construction), Miles has worked hand-in-hand with Kirk to form the backbone of their operation. Rigorously-trained installers Alex Block (Kirk’s nephew) and Elijah Case (Miles’s son), round out the crew and instill a real sense of continuity to their work. This is a familyowned and -operated business, and customers are treated with an extra measure of care not typically provided by larger corporate entities.
Quit turning your back on that unfinished, unoptimized, disorganized garage space and call Garage Experts of Portland (503-994-1227) today for a free estimate! You can also check out their website: garageexperts.com/portland-or for inspiration regarding a variety of makeover ideas and to read their customers’ amazing testimonials. It’s that time of year when most Oregonians have grown tired of the winter season and are ready for spring! Many residents eagerly anticipate spending leisurely afternoons outdoors. Whether it’s lounging on the backyard deck with a refreshing beverage or hosting barbecues on the patio while children frolic in the yard, creating the perfect outdoor space is a priority. Alex Saculteanu, the proprietor of Grands Decks, specializes in bringing these outdoor dreams to life, and now is the ideal time to embark on your dream project!
Alex was working for a decking company in New Jersey about 13 years ago when composite decking became popular and he realized it was the wave of the future. He started his own decking business in Jersey called the Guardian and after much success, he moved to the Pacific Northwest and opened Grand Decks six years ago.
A thoughtfully crafted deck enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home while adding value and serving as a hub for social gatherings. Grands Decks offers a range of services including the design and construction of new decks, fences, patio covers and deck resurfacing. “Customers get confused because they think resurfacing refers to sanding and resealing their current deck surface,” Alex says. “But we actually replace
the floor. Most times we can use the current foundation and framing if it’s in good condition.”
With over a decade of experience in deck construction, Alex personally oversees every project to ensure impeccable quality and attention to detail. “As the project manager, I’m hands-on at the job site nearly every day,” Alex explains. “I ensure that my team follows the plans, delivers exceptional workmanship, and provides ongoing support to our clients throughout the process.”
Collaborating closely with clients to conceptualize their projects is Alex’s passion. “Building a deck is about creating a living space,” he emphasizes. “Understanding our clients’ vision and preferences is crucial as they’ll be spending a significant amount of time on the deck. We guide them through the entire process, offering samples, color options and visual aids to help them make informed decisions.”
Grands Decks utilizes premium materials from reputable manufacturers, with Trex® being their preferred choice for composite decking. Renowned for its durability, ecofriendliness, and longevity (with a lifespan of at least 25 years), Trex® is unmatched in terms of quality and performance. “Trex® offers superior products, customer service, and warranties,” Alex attests. “Our team is extensively trained in working with Trex® and adhering to industryspecific codes to ensure flawless construction and longterm satisfaction.” Trex also offers different grades of their composite at affordable prices so there are options and customers can choose what works for their budget.
In addition to Trex’s 25-year warranty, Grands Decks stands behind its workmanship with a three-year warranty for deck resurfacing and a five-year warranty for new deck installations. Transparency and integrity are at the core of Grands Decks’ business philosophy. They never alter the agreed-upon price mid-project, even if unforeseen expenses arise.
If you’re in the market for a new deck this year, you’ll want to start the process early. “From the moment the customer signs the contract we are working on architecture, blueprints and making engineering calculations, but many projects require permits from the city and we have no control over their timeline,” Alex explains. “It’s best to start the process at the beginning of the season or even before. That way in May or June you’ll be enjoying your new deck rather than waiting several weeks to start the project.”
As a friendly, locally-owned business, Grands Decks takes pride in fostering strong relationships with clients, prioritizing open communication and resolving any issues promptly. “Our motto is ‘no problems, just work to do’,” Alex declares. “We’re committed to delivering exceptional results and ensuring our clients’ complete satisfaction.”

As a result, the people fishing for salmon, steelhead and trout in the Northwest are more effective than ever, armed with modern tackle that works expertly for each technique.

If you’ve at least found a place to fish, and what species are in it, you can start to search for articles about techniques and tackle to catch those species. Timing and weather are also very important, so try to find information about peak fishing time periods.

The massive amount of video content that YouTube has on fishing would take several lifetimes to understand. In the Northwest, channels like “Addicted Fishing” go over virtually every single technique to catch common Oregon and Washington fish species. Steelhead and salmon fishermen can find a treasure trove of information just from following “Addicted,” “Salmon Trout Steelheader” and other online fishing content outlets.

Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing better than having a friend that knows how to fish a river effectively and learning directly from them. They will have a track record of finding fish, and if you follow their lead and try to learn every detail of their technique, you’ll have an elevator ride to success. For those who don’t have someone around with that ability, they still can find amazing success through research and spending time on the water.

Always research everything you can in order to give yourself the best chance at fish. If you still don’t catch a fish, don’t get discouraged. Fishing is not the easiest sport in the Northwest due to our weather and fish stocks, but if you stick with it, you keep fishing and you keep learning. Well, don’t be surprised if it becomes your all-time favorite outdoor activity!

It’s no secret that Portland has a vibrant and bustling queer community with plenty of welcoming spaces for LBGTQIA2+ folks and their allies. But last summer, Beaverton Downtown Association Chair Kirsten Agard was meeting with City Councilor John Dugger to discuss their plans for downtown when they realized Beaverton was seriously lacking in that arena.
“Our Beaverton Pride had 16,000 attendees last year,” says Kirsten. “So we know there is a large queer community here. We saw that most of our queer friends were traveling to Portland for the social scene and we wanted to change that.” Kirsten collaborated with local representatives and her friend and popular drag queen Poison Waters to start Beyond Labels, a monthly event dedicated to creating support and visibility for the LBGTQIA2+ community in the Beaverton area. “We should be celebrating it all the time, not just in June,” she says.
Whether it’s Drag Queen Bingo, Sip-and-Paint Night or Team Trivia, the current phase of Beyond Labels features monthly events held at different downtown locations. The first was a Drag Queen Latte Art Throwdown held at Lionheart Coffee Company with drag queen host Pluto Momo. “It’s been fun to see the individual businesses get creative to integrate their piece while also bringing visibility to the queer
community,” Kirsten says. Any scheduled entertainers are LBGTQIA2+ and some events are in community spaces suited for all ages, including one at the downtown library.
Another cornerstone of the program is a commitment to helping houseless youth. Home Plate Youth Services is a local nonprofit supporting that community. “Teenagers make up a huge percentage of our houseless population here in Beaverton,” explains Kirsten. “Every event will be somehow tied to Home Plate, whether the business splits the proceeds with them or we do a supply drive or other fundraiser.”
The Downtown Beaverton Association has teamed up with multiple community partners invested in celebrating the queer community in Beaverton, including city representatives, downtown business owners, the mayor’s assistant, and the library director. The Central Beaverton Neighborhood Association Committee is working on a grant to help businesses cover the costs of hosting events. “We are all recognizing we need to do better,” Kirsten says. “Beaverton has grown enough that we need our own identity to include our entire community. This initiative is so important to all of us, and everyone is pitching in and working together to support it.”
The next phase of Beyond Labels will be even more focused on young people. “The plan is to organize a youth career day with resume and interview prep,” shares Kirsten, “We want something more tangible and impactful.”
So grab a friend and come out to enjoy queer-friendly entertainment in a safe space with good company and for a good cause. For future event dates, times, and details, please visit downtownbeaverton.org.

He wasn’t Irish — born in Britain to a Romanised family, he was kidnapped by slave traders in Britain at age 16 and worked in Ireland on a cattle farm for six years. Only later did he return to Ireland.
His name wasn’t Patrick — ordained Patricus (Latin for “nobleman”), he was born Maewyn Succat.
He did not wear green — but rather blue.
He didn’t banish snakes — archeologists have no evidence that snakes were ever native to Ireland. It’s more likely the snakes are a metaphor for the evil he banished.
He might have popularized the shamrock — the shamrock is claimed to be a symbol for the Holy Trinity, with the three leaves representing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
This Technicolor (full color!) Disney movie is a rare gem set in a small Irish village. Darby O’Gill (Albert Sharpe) is fired as caretaker of his leased farm and refuses to tell his daughter Katie (Janet Munro), especially when he’s been replaced by a brawny younger man (Sean Connery). On his way home from the pub, Darby falls into a portal to a secret land of the little people (leprechauns). He meets the leprechaun king, Brian (Jimmy O’Dea), and accidentally brings him home. As Darby has trapped him (that’s the trick), he demands that Brian grant him three wishes, bringing Darby bittersweet and surprising results. Funny, sweet and surprisingly thoughtful, this is great for the whole family. Rated G.
A visually gorgeous and beautifully scored Irish fable, this family movie won a slew of awards and was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year at the Academy Awards. In the wilds of Ireland, Cellach readies his fortress for a Viking raid looming on the horizon. Little does he know, his nephew Brendan rejects the savagery of warfare and instead chooses to hone his skills in the monastery scriptorium. As the Vikings draw near, Aidan, a respected illuminator (artist), seeks Brendan’s aid in a dangerous quest. Starring Evan McGuire, Christen Moone, Brendan Gleeson, Mick Lally, Michael McGrath and others. Great for the whole family. Not rated but essentially PG.
A coming-ofage comedy set in 1990’s Derry, Northern Ireland during the Northern Ireland conflict (The Troubles), this show is utterly hilarious and truly unique. It follows a group of Irish Catholic teens who rebel against everything — their school, parents, the conflict, you name it — leading to hilarious hi-jinks and consequences. They’re also obsessed with the music (featured in the show) and culture of the time, making for a nostalgiadrenched experience. Be warned, it’s full of profane and mature content. Best viewed by older teens and adults. Rated MA (aka R).

Did you know that the color originally associated with Saint Patrick was blue, and that pubs were closed on the day we celebrate this holiday? Delving into the history of Saint Patrick’s Day and the traditions associated with it provide a glimpse not only into this fascinating holiday but into Irish history as well.
New York University admits that information on the famous saint is scant at best. “We know he was a Roman Citizen, because Britain was Rome then, and then he was enslaved and taken to Ireland, where he either escaped or was released.”
This man, later known as Saint Patrick, became a priest and returned to Ireland where he was instrumental in converting the followers of Druidic culture to Christianity.
As the story goes, St. Patrick’s birth name was Maewyn Succat, but at some point in time, he changed his name to Patricius — a name whose Latin roots are associated with the concept of fatherhood, or a father figure.
Today, shamrocks and green beer are common Saint Patrick Day traditions. In 1631, however, when the Church established March 17th as a feast day honoring St. Patrick, such traditions were non-existent. While the celebration of Saint Patrick dates back to 1631, the man himself was even further removed in history. So who was Saint Patrick and when did he actually live? Marion Casey, a professor of Irish Studies at
It wasn’t until the 18th century that St. Patrick’s Day celebrations began to ramp up and assume the form we associate today with the holiday. As St. Patrick’s Day falls during Lent, it functioned as a day off, so to speak, from the prescribed abstinence leading up to Easter. In fact, the celebrations became so excessive that the Church felt compelled to remind people of the religious significance of the holiday. The symbol it chose to commemorate Saint Patrick was the shamrock. Not only was this clover leaf already ensconced in Irish culture and lore dating back to pre-Christian times, but its classic three-leaf shape directly corresponded to the number three — a number associated with the Holy Trinity. The story went that when Saint Patrick returned to Ireland, he employed the shamrock as a symbol to illustrate the Trinity to the heathen masses he was striving to convert to Christianity.
Throughout the 1700s, St. Patrick’s Day traditions continued to evolve. Despite the fact that the holiday originated in Ireland,
the first St. Patrick’s Day parade actually took place across the Atlantic in New York City in 1762. It wasn’t until the Irish Rebellion of 1798 that the color green was associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Prior to the rebellion, blue was the standard color linked to Ireland, as it was featured in the royal court and also present on the ancient flags of the country. In contrast to the famous red of the British military, the Irish adopted green as their color, proudly singing “The Wearing of the Green” during the war, thus cementing green as the national color of Ireland.
As for the current traditions common to St. Patrick’s Day, one might assume they originated in Ireland. Contrary to popular belief, however, a number of these familiar traditions were born right here in the U.S. One such American invention was green beer which traces back to an Irish-American physician, Dr. Thomas Hayes Curtain, who in 1914 added a drop of blue coloring to beer, turning it green. The coloring utilized by the doctor was referred to as “blue wash,” an iron powder solution with dye intended to brighten up white clothing. Unfortunately, beer at the time contained acetaldehyde, which
not only adversely affected the flavor of the beer, but reacted negatively with the blue wash, making the St. Patrick’s Day imbibers ill. Fortunately, today’s green beer is made with a drop or two of blue or green food coloring and acetaldehyde is no longer an ingredient in beer. While other towns and individuals claim to have invented green beer, historians tend to give Dr. Curtin the nod.
Speaking of turning things green for St. Patrick’s Day, how about an entire river? In 1962 when city workers used dyes to trace the source of illegal sewage dumping in the Chicago River, they applied a St. Patrick’s Day concept. Injecting 100 pounds of green vegetable dye into the river, they were able to turn it green for an entire week. Today, in an effort to be environmentally conscious, only 40 pounds of dye are used, turning the river green for a matter of hours rather than days.
When it comes to food, the typical St. Patrick’s Day classics are corned beef and cabbage: traditional Irish food, right? Not so fast. In truth, traditional St. Patrick’s Day fare in Ireland would have consisted of Irish Stew and soda bread, or perhaps a meal of pork and potatoes, which were less expensive than beef. Food historians suggest that struggling Irish immigrants likely substituted beef and cabbage for pork
and potatoes, which at the time were more expensive.
Another fact that might blow people’s minds today is that until 1970 pubs were closed in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day in observance of its status as a religious holiday. Subsequently, laws were passed to have the pubs open on March 17th, a move which, as you might imagine, was embraced by business owners and promoted heavily. An official campaign by the Irish government was launched in 1995 to spur tourism to the country by marketing St. Patrick’s Day and Irish culture abroad.
Today, St. Patrick’s day is celebrated not only in Ireland, but throughout the world, particularly in North America and Australia. St. Patrick’s Day celebrations take place as far from Ireland as Japan, Singapore and Russia. What began in Ireland as a religious holiday, and later expanded to represent Irish culture and nationalism, was embraced by people around the world as a day to make merry, appreciate Irish traditions, and knock back a pint or two while enjoying corned beef and cabbage, soda bread, and perhaps a hearty bowl of Irish stew. So the next time you’re donning a bit o’ green for St. Paddy’s day, propose a toast not only to old Saint Patrick, but to the rich historical evolution of this fascinating holiday!

With spring in the air and Oregon FINALLY getting some sun, I must talk about the benefits of getting fresh air!
Fresh air helps your immune system with healthier white blood cells. It also supplies your immune system with the oxygen needed to kill bacteria, viruses and germs.
Fresh air is good for your digestive system, increasing the flow of oxygen, which helps you digest food more effectively, so this will particularly help if you are trying to lose weight.
Fresh air helps improve blood pressure and heart rate. Avoid polluted environments particularly if you need to improve your blood pressure. Stay away from busy traffic
as the body will need to work harder to get the amount of oxygen it needs over polluted car fumes.
Fresh air makes you happier. The more fresh air you get, the more oxygen you will breathe, increasing the amount of serotonin (the happy hormone) you create, consequently making you happier.
Fresh air cleans your lungs, which dilate more from having an increase of oxygen, so fresh air improves the cleansing of your lungs. You release airborne toxins from your body when exhaling through your lungs.
Fresh air gives you more energy and a sharper mind. You may have noticed after spending time outside,
you come back indoors feeling brighter and perhaps ready to get back to work. More oxygen results in greater brain function, improving your concentration skills and providing you with more energy.
An added bonus is that heading outside will also help you get vitamin D from the sun, which is essential for many bodily functions, including supporting your immune system, strengthening your bones, teeth and much more. So, get outside today, and go for a walk in the sunshine!
