Healing With Herbs

ne of the reasons I love our store is the splendid garden space alongside 12th street. Growing herbs makes me especially happy: rosemary, oregano, thyme, lavender, echinacea, and yarrow. I love their names, their scents, their flowers, and their flavors. I also love the fact that all those lovely smells and tastes mean something. Science is discovering that there is purpose behind the colors, smells, and flavors of plants. Something the village herbalist could have told you centuries ago. Take for instance lavender. Traditionally lavender has been used to soothe nerves, release tension from the body, and help with sleep. Scientific studies have shown that lavender soothes the nervous system, helps with anxiety, and helps facilitate restful sleep. Surprise! It’s nice to have science support what we already know. And then there is oregano. Besides flavoring tomato sauce, oregano has powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. We have oregano oil in capsules that can be used to help clear candida and parasites from the intestinal tract or to stave off respiratory infections. Some people put several drops of oregano oil (it’s very hot) into a teaspoon of olive oil and take it several times a day to fight germs in the throat and in the stomach.
