J&C started as a food truck in Sweet Home in 2016. As they found success they opened a brick-and-mortar in Lebanon in 2018, then moved to the former Bigfoot Grille in downtown in July 2022. They originally merged their menu with Bigfoot’s, but with J&C’s large following and passion for excellence in barbecue, they rebranded. “We knew it was time to return to our roots,” Christy explains. “Our new logo and everything we’ve created truly represents us and our family.” The Poteets have two daughters who each play a part in the business, one as the head chef; the other, a baker and server.

“When we’re playing with new recipes and flavors, we’ll invite them in to try things out,” Christy shares. “They aren’t just customers anymore; they’ve become family.” J&C also offers fully customizable catering. The Poteets are committed to putting Oregon on the map for barbecue. “We’re the only restaurant in the Pacific Northwest that competes in professional food competitions, and this is our seventh year,” says Christy. “It’s exploded for us, and we’ve continually been nationally recognized for our craft.” That includes placing at the SCA World Championship for steak in Texas, where Joe and their oldest daughter each hold a perfect steak score, of which there are just 20 worldwide. The two Grand Championships they won this year qualify the team to compete in the KCBS Invitational, the American Royal in Kansas City, and a potential invite to compete in the Jack Daniels Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee for 2025. The Poteets also organize local barbecue events and competitions.

A Secret Spot

Find Pacific NW dining paradise inside Boulder Falls Inn

Restaurant Manager Chris Breshears explains. “For example, if chanterelle mushrooms are available, we’ll feature them in our specials.”

1847 is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and head chef Dan Clark skillfully crafts a variety of entrees that showcase the region’s bounty. To begin the culinary journey, guests can choose from a selection of upscale appetizers like stuffed portabellos, smoked salmon cakes or duck tostadas featuring duck confit on corn tostadas with avocado, marinated onion, chipotle aioli and house-pickled jalapenos. Fresh salads and loaded burgers are available as a main course, but their epicurean entrees really steal the show. The 14-oz ribeye is a guest favorite, house-cut and grilled to order with herb-roasted Yukon potatoes, grilled asparagus and topped

The Best Western Premier Boulder Falls Inn perches invitingly at the edge of a one-acre Japanese-style garden with a pond full of colorful koi, but the hotel is more than just a nice place to stay: it’s home to one of Lebanon’s most beloved hidden gems. Open since 2015, 1847 Bar & Grill is named after the year the city was founded and brings a winning combination of small-town charm and expertly prepared PacificNorthwest-inspired cuisine.

Located in the lobby, the restaurant is an excellent option for hotel guests, but for many locals, it’s a favorite spot for birthdays, special occasions or just a fun night out. The menu rotates seasonally, with an emphasis on Pacific Northwest ingredients. “We like to buy from local farmers and suppliers, especially for produce,” Hotel and

with blue-cheese garlic vin blanc. Another popular selection is the beef sugo, braised in housemade demi-glace and served over pappardelle pasta with mirepoix, cherry tomatoes, parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs.

For a taste of fresh local seafood, try the seafood bucatini or the rockfish, which Dan pan-sears and serves with grilled asparagus, lemon-dill risotto, and caper-herb compound butter. “Our rockfish, in particular, comes fresh from the Oregon Coast,” says Chris. “We typically get it the same day it’s caught or the following day.” A kid’s menu is available for the little ones, and so is a delightful choice of desserts like the goat’s milk cheesecake—creamy chevre cheesecake with candied hazelnuts—and the flourless chocolate terrine with sweet creme fraiche, salted caramel and blackberry compote.

Though the fare is moderately upscale, the cozy atmosphere at 1847 is the perfect spot for a casual dinner. Guests can enjoy views of the picturesque Japanese-style garden, featuring

multiple waterfalls and stunning foliage, and patio seating is available in the warmer months. The dining room offers intimate booths and long tables to accommodate larger parties, or, for guests 21 and over, seating is available at their beautiful live-edge Oregon maple bar. The beer on tap is primarily from Oregon suppliers, like Block 15 Brewing, and the wine selection also

hails from the Pacific Northwest region. The cocktail menu combines classic favorites like the lemon drop and espresso martini with fun surprises like the spicy margarita or smoked oldfashioned. Happy Hour is from 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, with discounted drinks and starters.

As leaders in the hospitality industry, Chris and his crew at 1847 Bar & Grill are dedicated to making every dining experience memorable, whether it’s a Friday date night or a 30-year anniversary. Most staff are

long-tenured and enjoy the variety of loyal regulars and out-of-town guests. Being tucked inside the Best Western Premier Boulder Falls Inn makes this restaurant somewhat of a concealed treasure, but you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to enjoy 1847. It’s the ideal location to indulge in regional delicacies at a local spot passionate about its heritage and committed to delivering an exceptional dining experience every time you visit.
