he condition of your oral health can be related to your genes. So, it’s safe to say you have inherited more than just your parent’s eyes, hair and good looks, but potentially some of their oral health problems as well. This doesn’t mean that your fate is decided as far as oral health, because the more you know, the more you can combat these complications.

Gum Disease and Genetics

Research shows that up to 30% of people are predisposed to having severe gum disease, also known as periodontitis. However, with good home care and regular visits to your hygienist and dentist severe gum disease is preventable. Early intervention and management of gum issues by a dental professional can reduce bone loss and recession of the gums. Left unchecked periodontitis can lead to premature loss of teeth. Some signs of gum disease are: puffy red and bleeding gums, recession around the base of the tooth, and tenderness around the gums. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important that you see a dentist regularly for cleanings and exams.

Cavities and Genetics

One specific gene, DEFB1, responsible for defending against microbes, has 3 possible genetic variations. One of the inherited varieties causes increase susceptibility to tooth decay in permanent teeth. Being a carrier of this variation, does not have to mean you will get cavities. With preventative treatments such as prescriptionbased toothpastes and fluoride treatments your cavity risk can decrease significantly. In the future salivary tests, that can detect susceptible gene variations and bacteria types, will be standard of care. At that time individualized prevention programs will be recommended. For now, follow the recommendations of your dental professional for the best ways to prevent cavities.

Misaligned Teeth and Genetics

If you have or had misaligned teeth, overbites, gaps, and crowding, blame it on your biological parents, and take your children to see the orthodontist around 7 or 8. Orthodontists generally do not charge for the initial consultation, and can intervene earlier to avoid problems associated with crowding, overbites, underbites and congenitally missing teeth. New innovations in Invisalign and traditional braces make wearing braces easier and quicker than it was even five years ago. Armed with the knowledge of your dental heredity, you and your children can actively prevent the dental issues your parents struggled with.
