“Active Minds has given me a network that I wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. There’s no denying that the events we put on are amazing and informative. But what really makes having an Active Minds chapter on campus special is the unique opportunity to find people who understand you and make vital connections, to help you through recovery and help you show compassion for situations that you might not understand.” - Active Minds Chapter Member, University of Maryland, College Park
A Message from the Active Minds Leadership
A Defining Year Dear Friends, Active Minds has never been a stronger organization. Our strength is evident by our immense successes during FY2014. We ended the fiscal year with a positive cash balance, enhanced our position in the mental health field, and have been hard at work solidifying our preeminent national reputation. •
Our Growth. Active Minds welcomed 2,100 new student chapter members through more than 400 chapters on campuses in 47 states, all working toward fundamental institutional change.
•
Our Reach. We grew our social media following to provide 101,845 people with daily mental health information, facts, messaging, and inspiration through our multiple platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and Tumblr.
•
Our Impact. We hosted more than 500 student advocates, researchers and campus leaders at our 11th National Mental Health on Campus Conference in College Park, Maryland.
We have created a safe haven for students—a place free of judgment where they aren’t treated differently because they’re struggling with a mental illness. We have created communities of hope. But it’s still not enough. Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among college students, and mental disorders are ubiquitous, affecting approximately one in four young people annually. Supporting Active Minds means more than simply helping thousands of students on 400 campuses each year. It means supporting a movement that is profoundly changing the conversation about mental health and battling the stigma associated with mental illness nationwide. It means supporting a brighter future and a better America for everyone. All of our achievements have depended on the generosity of people like you and on our ability to activate students, parents and educators. Last year we told you we were ready to transition from a startup nonprofit to a self-sustainable social enterprise. We are almost there and we will keep building on this momentum to enhance our efforts and empower even more individuals to speak out against the stigma of mental illness. Together, we can seize this moment and bring lasting change, so all students have the opportunity to lead fulfilling and productive lives. Thank you so much for your generous support,
Alison K. Malmon Founder and Executive Director
Steven A. Lerman Chairman, Board of Directors

Growth For the ninth consecutive year, the growth in impact of Active Minds’ services surpassed the growth in the organization’s revenues. The need for Active Minds chapters and programs is apparent by the increase in people reached in 2014, despite no revenue growth. With increasing national exposure, Active Minds must raise more money to fully respond to the requests for its services.

Active Minds Speaker Janelle MontaĂąo, introduced President Obama at the first White House Conference on Mental Health since 1999. As the only young adult to speak, she shared her story about family suicide, major depression, recovery and hope. Active Minds was the only organization to have a representative speak about their own mental health struggles, and have the honor to introduce the president.

Active Minds at SUNY Old Westbury tasked itself with an important mission: Getting contact information for counseling services printed on student ID cards. Chapter members partnered with University Police to make this important institutional change, ensuring both the accessibility and normalization of treatment services and help-seeking. It sent a strong message to the entire student population that this campus is a safe place to seek help and talk openly about mental health.
