NEW BEGINNINGS

Imagine the ideal camping spot on Kauai, somewhere along the pristine beaches of Polihale State Park. With another majestic sunrise and the blue-green sparkle of perfect surf, the water again calls out. When the hunger pangs get too loud, you paddle back in for grilled fish tacos, healthy and brimming with indigenous mango and papaya. In the afternoon, hike the beautiful Kalalau Trail, where native plants, waterfalls, and exotic sounds engulf your senses. On the way home, there’s a stop at your favorite local hangout for fresh juices, an açai bowl, or poke. Finally, after a quick change, it’s time for two hours of hula practice, where you can’t help but learn more about the culture and history of Hawai’i. Ah, just another perfect day in paradise.

Living on Kauai for so long shaped me into the health-crazed individual I am today. I parlayed my early lifestyle into a career by getting a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Hawaii. Growing up on the islands, surrounded by such breathtaking beauty, one can’t ever imagine anything better. In 2009, the explorer in me yearned to travel beyond paradise, to California, in search of what’s “out there.” Questions raced through my mind: What activities could I do there to stay fit? Would I find similar food places with offerings as tasty and nutritious as the ones where I was raised? The last 5 years on the mainland, in Orange County, California, have been a slice of the same amazing pie. With sunny days, great beaches and people who prioritize well-being, it’s as if I had never moved. It reminded me of Kauaiunbelievable, a place just like home.

Heck- it was home. I quickly graduated with a certificate in nutrition from Orange Coast College’s prestigious program and began offering personal training services. Along the way, I left no stone unturned in my quest to stay active. I discovered Orange County is driven by an entrepreneurial spirit that encourages original fitness options. There are a variety of things to cultivate the mind and body in this cultural melting pot. From an abundant array of gyms and community events, including healthy places to eat and shop, you’ll never exhaust the to-do list. Orange County’s charm is evident and distinct in each of its parks, trails, beaches, juice bars, yoga studios and even fitness locations. Just like snowflakes, no two are exactly the same. It’s a blessing that who I am dovetails nicely into helping direct the Active OC team. In between the magazine’s pages, we hope to share our collective passion in providing you, our readers, with a one-stop shop of tips toward a happy, fit and balanced life. This includes, but isn’t limited to: interviews with newsmakers, upcoming events, product reviews, personal/competition training, outdoor activities, food reviews, and a few surprises as well. It’ll be a bold journey of exploration, fun, and the pursuit of exciting things extending past the usual comfort zones. Partnering with Active OC and its dedicated staff in discovering them together. There are treasures in your own backyard. We invite you to join us. Your adventure awaits…

WHAT IS the NPGL? At first glance, The Grid looks like the CrossFit Games. And it’s no wonder: It’s founder and commissioner Tony Budding worked as a CrossFit executive for 10 years. However, Budding left because he believes the key to expanding and monetizing the sport is by making it more spectator- and sponsor-friendly. The CrossFit Games catered to CrossFitters. Budding wants to introduce this sport to a much broader audience. He wants fans. That’s why the NPGL won’t be set up like the CrossFit Games. It’ll be modeled after other professional leagues like the NFL or NBA, with professional paid athletes. Potential Grid competitors attended a combine in April and May, and then a draft was held in July. Athletes who made one of the eight regional teams—the District of Columbia

Brawlers, the San Francisco Fire, the Philadelphia Founders, the Boston Iron, the Los Angeles Reign, the New York Rhinos, the Phoenix Rise, and the Miami Surge—will earn $2,500 per match. Right now, only the top 10 individuals and top three teams of the CrossFit Games walk away with any money.

As for the matches, they involve two co-ed teams of 10, who will go head to head on a court or “Grid” that measures 94 feet by 50 feet. Each match lasts two hours and consists of 11 races that test strength, speed, endurance, and coordination. For example, in one race, men and women from each team must match each other rep-for-rep on heavy lifts without letting the barbell touch the floor.

And since there are unlimited substitutions allowed, coaches can tailor the team lineups

Misty May-Treanor Sports Center active ocmag.COM

to each particular event. “At the CrossFit Games, you’re testing the fitness levels of the athletes,” says Budding. “What we’re doing is racing. Because of substitutions, we’re testing the strategy of the teams.”

Budding has high hopes for the league. Prices for floor level seat range from $100 to $225, and he’s hoping to attract an audience of 3,000 to 4,000 for every match. He says he has 40 inquiries for expansion teams in 2015, and that he’d like to eventually grow the NPGL to 32 teams so it’s on the same level as other mainstream sports. “I think this can be enormous,” says Budding. “The Grid is a great spectator sport and we’ll be able to grow it to the size of the NHL.” So tell us: Will you tune in?

On October 1st, 2014 the MMTSC opened a new, stateof the art sports destination in the city of Irvine, CA. Boasting an impressive $1,000,000 of low-impact Haro wood floors, the MMTSC features 22 indoor volleyball courts, 21 indoor basketball courts, and 21 indoor futsal courts that will be used to organize world class youth and adult club programs and sports leagues. EQUIPMENT

THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB

When you’re in the market for training equipment, do your homework. We bring you eight quality products that fit the bill. From powerlifting to stand up padddleboarding (SUP), and everything in between, we have something for you. ROGUE SPORTS Rogue Kettlebells start with the highest quality first run iron ore available, not scrap. They use a proprietary casting process so each bell can reach the highest quality and have the cleanest finish possible. This also allows the kettlebells to have a smooth, comfortable handle. The Rogue Kettlebell is cast in one solid piece, creating a stronger, more reliable handle and a void free surface. The Rogue Kettlebell has a matte black powder coat finish that has a great feel and will hold chalk. This feels more natural than a thick epoxy finish. Handles are color coded. By associating each kettlebell weight increment with a different color handle, it becomes much easier for gym owners and trainers to direct athletes to specific kettlebells on sight alone.

XBAR XBAR XBAR has been skillfully crafted to fit the ergonomics and natural position of your hand and wrist placement. Just like with the familiar curl bar, you have three different standard hand positions, close grip, regular grip and wide grip, which allows for unlimited exercises. Because of the fluid rotating end-swivels, and the rubber-to-rubber detached push-up docks, you can always find a position that perfectly fits your comfort zone. With three different resistance bands (included), the amount of resistance you can achieve is equivalent to an entire gym rack. Use one band for a light workout, add all three bands together and the resistance is more than most people can handle. So the XBAR can go with you anywhere. The gym, the office, the park, the beach, vacation, even in your own living room. The XBAR delivers.

PERFORMANCE

WORDS : CATHERINE DESMOND Photos: ATP EXTREME

If you are looking for your typical everyday and overly hyped about supplement then move on; however, if you’re looking for what is next in the fitness industry then listen up. Pro athletes such as Jon Pera (crossfit athlete), Mike Rodgers (pro-sprinter), Lloyd Dollar (bodybuilder), and Melina Bernecker (pro-cyclist) have discovered one of the best kept secrets today and all have one thing in common: they believe that since on ATP Extreme, they have been having the best training of their careers. Every single one of these athletes have different fitness backgrounds yet are in need of the same outcomes in their trainings. They need speedy recovery, strength and performance gains, help with lactic acid build up, and an increase in VO2 max. Jon Pera has hit an Overhead squat of 400 Lbs while Lloyd dollar is bench pressing 315 Lbs for 20 reps. I think anyone would be more than happy to discover such results as these ones! I discovered ATP Extreme almost one year ago now at the LA FIT EXPO while competing for Garden Grove Crossfit at the affiliate crossfit showcase! Craig Inaba (company president) allowed me to use this product for my last event. I had never met someone so passionate about one product and so sure in a supplement then Craig and this is coming from someone who had worked at a supplement store. I was excited to see what this product could help me achieve in a matter of one workout. Of Course I was skeptical of how just one dose of a product could help in such a short amount of time, but after finishing the event with no sign of exhaustion I was hooked. Throughout the past year Craig has conducted many tests to prove what ATP Extreme can do for an athlete and I was able to participate in a rowing study. Rowing has never been my strong point; however, I wanted to see just how much this product can help me in my biggest weakness. The test lasted two weeks and on the first week we were instructed to be off of all products including ATP Extreme and participate in the following workout:

• 500m. row at max effort 2 min. rest • 500m. row at max effort • 2 min. rest

The second week we were to do the same thing but this time participate while only using ATP Extreme. The major difference I had noticed was my pace was a lot more consistent and the lactic acid build up in between rows decreased majorly. My max effort actually lasted passed the halfway mark and I was able to breathe more smoothly than the week before. Every other participant had noticed these same results within this study as well. Strength wise I noticed a huge increase in my back squat and my snatch. Two powerlifting movements that were not my strongest points. I had hit a wall when it came to back squats. I was stuck at my one rep max being only at 165 lbs for more than 5 months and at a competition last year I could not snatch more than 75 lbs. However just months on ATP Extreme I hit a front squat at 165 and my back squat moved up to 180 lbs while only 2 months after my competition I hit 100 lbs on my snatch at the gym! The look on my coaches face when I hit that 100 pounds was priceless knowing that not even 3 months ago I was 25 pounds away from that number. One year later and I have found myself with a product that has taken the job of 5 different products I use to take! Instead of carrying a gym bag full of supplements, I have my protein, BCAA, and my ATP Extreme and I have yet to be tempted to try anything else. What this product has brought into my training has proved to me that you do not need all the different supplements that every supplement store tries to tell you that you NEED in order to gain results. I had made podium in my first Legendary Competitor Crossfit competition and now onto my second year competing with my team from Garden Grove Crossfit at the LA Fit Expo. Like the athletes above, I have had the best year in training since starting this sport. With no banned-substances, no on and off cycles, and no stimulants, I could not be more happy than to represent such an amazing product!

STICK WITH IT

WORDS : MELINDA NEWHOUSE

According to a study, 1/3 of people who make New Year’s resolutions, declare weight loss as their “New Year’s Resolution,” more specifically, beginning a new exercise program. Did you know, a majority of nutritionists and trainers use the 70:30 ratio when it comes to nutrition versus exercise? That’s right, the result of shedding unwanted weight will be made up of 70% of your weight loss efforts. So, how do you stick with your New Year in nutrition? Follow these easy, health saving tips. Start with a kitchen check, by ridding your refrigerator and pantries of high-sugar and highly processed foods. This will drastically reduce the instance of giving in to temptation; if it is not there, you will not eat it. When filling up the grocery cart, have a pre prepared grocery list with you, sticking to the outer perimeter of the store, and get only what is on your list. Your grocery list should contain an assortment of vegetables of all colors, low-glycemic fruits (fruits that have minimal affects on the blood sugar), lean meats, whole grains, healthy fats (i.e. olive oil, avocado), and low-fat or fat-free dairy. While you will want to avoid most pre made sauces and dressings because of their hidden calories, healthy eating does not have to be bland. Herbs and spices provide an excellent source of flavor, are low in calories, and some even have disease-fighting properties. Finally, the most neglected component of nutrition is hydration; often, consuming water is not considered when beginning a new diet and exercise regime. active ocmag.COM

Eliminating soda and fruit juices is the number one way to cut down your “empty calories,’ calories with no nutritional benefit. Instead, replace these items with water. The body requires hydration via water for optimal health, including normal cell function, digestion, filtration of the kidneys, and, you guessed it, weight loss. By following these easy tips, you will be on your way to conquering your New Year’s goals in good health!

Your stomach rumbling, letting you know its time to eat is something everyone has experienced. That very instance where you are so hungry, you grab the first food item available, even if it is not a healthy option. Sound too familiar? Try preparing your food in advance. By preparing your meals at the beginning of the week or the night before, you take out the guesswork and avoid the panic of straying away from your diet plan.

Benefits of an Afternoon Snack

A quick afternoon snack between lunch and dinner can help keep your metabolism working properly, provide you with energy, aid in weight management, and help prevent you from overindulging at dinner. Keep your snacks between 100 to 200 calories and avoid sugary foods like cookies and cupcakes, which contain no nutritional benefits. Rather, an apple and a 1/4c of nuts provide slow digesting carbohydrates for energy, healthy fats, and fiber to help with digestion. And make sure you get organic fruits and veggies!

The low down on the raw food diet WORDS AND PHOTOS : ERICA PATTON

What is the raw food diet that everyone has been buzzing about lately? “Rawism” as it is sometimes referred to consists of eating only raw, fresh, living, organic unprocessed foods that have not been heated above 118 degrees Fahrenheit. This concept is based on the fact that once food has been heated above that temperature it begins to break down and loses nutrients and enzymes. These natural occurring enzymes aid in the digestion process, help to boost the immune system and fight chronic disease. So what does that mean? In short by eating raw foods that are full of their natural enzymes your body does not need to work as hard to process

these foods and absorb all of their powerful nutrients. A proper raw diet eliminates constipation, and the transit time of waste matter shortens to 24 hours or less, avoiding the buildup of toxemia from the recycling of toxins from the colon. Many people on the raw food diet or a diet that consists of mostly raw foods say that they have more energy, sleep better, feel clear headed and have had an easier time shedding unwanted pounds. The very best quality vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, enzymes, coenzymes, fiber, water, protein, carbohydrates, and fats come from fruits and vegetables. They are complete nutritional packages and

provide the body with everything it needs to function properly. Of all foods, fruits are richest in vitamins and water, and second richest in minerals and fiber, while vegetables and leafy greens are richest in minerals and fiber, and second richest in vitamins and water. The other two nutrient groups, proteins and fats, are needed in smaller quantities; so, while fruits and vegetables are not high in protein and fat content, they still remain their ideal source. You can find many raw food products at your local health food store such as grab and go meal bars, raw chocolates, raw dehydrated crackers cookies, wraps and more.

Benefits of superfoods What are superfoods you might ask? A nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. Superfoods are very special things that do wonders for our body and overall health. Superfoods are popping up in restaurants dishes and products all over everywhere. With so many nuts, seeds, legumes and plants boasting these super benefits it is so easy to incorporate them into our daily diet. Blueberries, Maca, Raw hemp seeds Beluga Lentils, Cacao, Ginseng, Green Tea, Kale, sesame seeds, avocado, bananas, walnuts, bok choy, spinach, apples, asparagus, spirulina, steel cut oats are all great superfoods we could all use more of.

Raw Superfood Smoothie 1 Banana ¼ Cup Goji berries 2tbsp Raw Hemp Seeds 2 Dates 1 tsp Maca powder 1 Cup of Strawberries 1 ½ Cups of Almond Milk (can substitute hemp milk, soy milk or base of your choice) Place all ingredients in the blender on high for 1-2 minutes, pour and enjoy this delicious treat that will keep you full all morning!

“Cheesy” Kale Chips 1 Bunch of organic kale 1/3 Cup Nutritional Yeast 1 Garlic Clove ½ A red bell pepper 2 Tablespoons of olive oil 3 Tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice ½ Teaspoon sea salted 1 Cup of raw cashews soaked for one hour and drained Rinse the kale and dry. Remove the stems and tear into bite size pieces. Let the kale air out as much as possible before coating. Blend all of the other ingredients in a high speed blender until smooth. Transfer kale and seasoning to a large bowl and mix well using your hands to ensure the leaves are well coated. Place the kale on the dehydrator trays, dehydrate at 118 degrees overnight or until coating is dry. You can also bake them in the oven at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until crispy.

Fermented Foods BEST FOR THE BODY If you walk into any natural health food store today you will encounter a plethora of cultured products. These trendy companies are popping up all over and we love it! Forget plain old sauerkraut, fermented foods have gotten a make-over. From traditional kimchi to artisan pickles, kombucha, ginger beets and countless other creative cultures, the options are endless and delicious. One of the many benefits of fermented foods is that the fermentation process actually increases certain nutrients. Fermented foods are also easier for our bodies to digest and they are loaded with probiotics that are essential for maintaining a healthy gut. So the next time you see that shiny mason jar filled with fermented goods, go ahead and give it a try, your belly will thank you.

Mendocino Farms The Secret Ingredient to Quality Food: LOVE By: @alesandra_rene

It’s no secret that the secret ingredient to good food is love. But for ecoartisan sandwich market, Mendocino Farms, they take that extra cup of love seriously. Mendocino Farms takes pride in serving quality, seasonal foods to Orange County and Los Angeles. With nine locations total, but with only one of those in the OC – just off 17th St in Costa Mesa – you have to check it out ASAP.. As soon as you walk through the door, “Hi, welcome! Have you been here before?” an excited and genuinely employee asks you. The employee then takes you through the entire menu – which doesn’t lack options, let me tell you. From Classics “Mendo Style” sandwiches, to sophisticated salads, to the separate sections of Farm and Foodie Favorites, and even its own section for Vegan options, and of course don’t forget the Seasonal Sandwiches,

the tour guide through the menu will get your taste buds and appetite so pumped up, you’ll want one of everything. Turn the corner and you’ll find a glass casing full of colorful side options. Now don’t even get me started on these sides. With options ranging from Curried Couscous, Marinated Red Beets & Quinoa, and the “Healthiest Side Salad Ever” you’ll want to try every single one. And you can – unlimited amount of times. Need I say more? From the menu, I chose the Kale Caesar salad and, from the Foodie Favorites, the “Not So Fried” Chicken. Let me start off by saying, I am not a salad lover. They always leave me feeling like an unsatisfied rabbit. But this Kale Caesar, with locally grown kale, butter lettuce and romaine, crispy wheatberries (instead of croutons), red onions, grape tomatoes and chucky avocado – plus the

option to add their free range roasted chicken – YUM. The “Not So Fried” Chicken didn’t disappoint either. Crispy fresh toasted ciabatta with roasted free range chicken, mustard pickle slaw, local tomatoes and pickled red onions with a side of warm sweet and spicy chipotle BBQ sauce. Yeah, they went there. Their creativity and artisan take on dining doesn’t stop with their food. With house-made soda flavors like Vanilla Cream and Mandarin Orange (hint: 2/3 Vanilla, 1/3 Orange = Creamsicle) your meal from Mendocino Farms will be anything but boring. And their menu states, “A great sandwich starts and stops with quality ingredients – and one other secret ingredient: LOVE.”

The Foam Roller? Really! Most Underrated Tool in Fitness and Health WORDS: S. Grant Caron OC NASM Certified Trainer

Foam Rolling is a must in any complete Fitness Program. Why? Our bodies muscle tissues are controlled ultimately by the neural system. Prior to exercise and stretching this corrective flexibility method will prepare the bodies neural system for stretching and load. Here is how and why. By applying gentle force with roller to a “knot” or adhesion (soreness) you can break up the tissue that is in a bundled state causing adhesion which decreases movement. The fix. Gentle force which requires at least 30 seconds of pressure can reset the tissues by stimulating the Golgi tendon. This tendon connects to the muscle and controls its length and tension. This can take that bundled muscle tissue and align it releasing the tension or adhesion. For a joint to work in all ranges of motion the proper length and tension is needed. This is a simple and correct way to start every day. Not just every Workout! Learn the proper techniques of this type of corrective flexibility and really change your life! This can and will affect your posture almost immediately. I’ve had clients tell me that this tool has become their best friend. It has changed the way their bodies deal with soreness and flexibility. This can truly help you stay Active in OC. active ocmag.COM

Shake up your abs routine with this move. How it works: Lie flat on the floor with your hands out to the sides, head on the ground, and feet and legs straight to the ceiling. Press down into the floor with your hands, and, with a controlled movement, lower your legs all the way to the ground on the right. Using your abs, move your legs back up and all the way over to the left. That is one rep. How many reps: Continue for 10 reps. Why it works: This challenges your whole trunk and lower back. Plus, it burns more calories than situps by forcing you to move a bigger load (both of your legs) in a more dynamic motion. How to make it harder: Instead of just taking your legs side to side, take them in a full circle, including up and over your head.

SQUAT-101 Lift More… Gain More All else being equal, the more you lift on any squat variation, the more muscle you activate. That’s why it’s so important to increase your strength over time. Wider Stance and Thigh Rotation You can probably lift more weight on the back if you take a wider stance, and rotate your thighs outward. That increases activation of your adductors (inner-thigh muscles), but not your quadriceps and hamstrings, which are the prime movers. Try to void the Smith Machine You can activate 44% more muscle squatting with free weights VS a Smith machine, those barbell on rails found in most gyms. This is despite the fact that most people can lift significantly more weight on the Smith.

MIND + BODY

POSES TO KEEP YOUR ACTIVE

HIPS HAPPY WORDS: Lyndsey Chambers PHOTOS: Charissa Littlejohn

Here is a little secret‌ You don’t have to live with a body that is tight and sore. You can be pain free and still engage in all of the activities you love! Happy hips combine go-to poses to stretch and open your hips, legs and low back. Hips are at the center of everything our active bodies love to do. The key to keeping your body balanced is to stretch and perform movements in multiple directions. Think about your average day. We tend to sit and move in one plane of motion the majority of the time. Regardless of our fitness levels, our bodies need a chance to lengthen and stretch. I always recommend for every two days you workout you should blend in 1 session of yoga or purposeful stretching. Not a yoga expert? No worries. You do not have to practice yoga or be flexible to enjoy the benefits of these moves. Use your new Happy Hips sequence as a post workout stretch, to break up your day at the desk or before bed. For the best results, perform them in this sequence, taking your time, letting the body enjoy the stretch. While in the pose, focus on the correct action and alignment in the legs and pelvis. Repeat each move 2Xs, holding for a minimum of 30 seconds.

Mind Your Mat

Ready to give your body some undivided attention? The next time you step onto your yoga mat, commit to making your yoga more about you by resisting the urge to compare yourself to others. This practice will allow you to focus your energy on you, your day and your body. In Orange County we have an abundant variety of places to practice yoga: In studios, on a SUP,

Triangle Pose

From a wide standing position (4-4.5 feet) turn your left foot/leg to the left. Keeping both legs straight, lengthen the torso reaching over your left leg and place your left hand on the left shin. Now press your outer right heel toward the floor and press your right thigh back. Allow the front of the pelvis to open, low back to lengthen. Repeat on the other side.

Warrior II

From a wide standing position (4-4.5 feet), turn your left foot/leg to the left. Bend the left knee to 90 degrees, keeping the right leg straight. Use the hands on the hips to check that the hips are aligned. Lengthen the low back as you press your right leg back and slightly tuck your tailbone forward. Lift and open the chest, leaving the hands on the hips or lengthen the arms out from the shoulders. Repeat on other side.

Runners Lunge

Starting from your knees, step the left foot forward moving into a lunge position. Check to see that the left knee stays over the ankle not in front of the toes. Hold the pose to allow your hip flexor and quad to stretch. To move deeper, roll the back toes under, lifting the back knee off the floor, straightening the leg. To modify, keep the back knee on the ground, place both hands on the front thigh and lift the chest. Repeat on the other side.

Hamstring 3 Way Stretch

1. Lying flat, straighten your left leg and lift your right leg 90 degrees with a strap on the arch of your foot. Both legs are straight, thighs active (quads flexing) and both feet flexing. Now, take your right thumb into the crease of your right outer thigh/hip. Pull the outer right hip away from yours ribs, toward your bottom foot creating space in the side body. Hold the pose here stretching hamstring. 2. Move your top leg 2-inches across the body, keeping the outer hip pulled down to target the IT band. 3. Move your leg all the way out to the right, opening the pelvis. Repeat on the other side.

Seated Cross Legs

Starting from your knees, step the left foot forward moving into a lunge position. Check to see that the left knee stays over the ankle not in front of the toes. Hold the pose to allow your hip flexor and quad to stretch. To move deeper, roll the back toes under, lifting the back knee off the floor, straightening the leg. To modify, keep the back knee on the ground, place both hands on the front thigh and lift the chest. Repeat on the other side.

at 100+ degrees, outside... all at our fingertips. Strive to find a class and a teacher that you can connect with, keeping in mind that our needs do change, and what works for others may not be what works for you. Trying a few different classes before you get a perfect fit is okay, too.

Whether you have practiced for years or are a newbie, the simple idea of focusing on oneself can transform your practice. Make the conscious effort to unplug from what is going on around you and connect to what is happening on your mat and inside you. Be present & enjoy. To me, this is yoga.

IT TAKES HARD WORK : THIS IS WHERE YOU GET IT DONE Tucked away on 17th Street in the beautiful city of Costa Mesa, located right in between CVS and Vons, you’d not have an inkling that a private personal fitness gym is a part of this strip mall, but it’s true. Behind tinted windows is a gym that caters to locals in the community, locals who show up to work hard and get results. It was meant to be when Ryan Lee and Sara Cho met while working at the same local gym a few years back. Little did they know, their fate was sealed, and they’d go on to become active ocmag.COM

Co-Owners of Precision Fitness Costa Mesa. Together, Ryan and Sara discovered common ground in their frustration with their experiences at ordinary, run of the mill gyms. They craved a fitness experience that would emphasize maximum results, as well as exceptional nutrition. Since then, they’ve gone on to develop a top notch facility that caters to a clientele who have access to a well-rounded and successful personal training experience. Ryan has a very personal investment

in Precision Fitness as an individual who has accomplished the amazing feat of shedding nearly 200 excess pounds with absolutely no support. Of this experience, he says: “I was 280 pounds overweight and decided to kill myself trying to lose weight every day, 7 days a week, over a year and a half span.” Ryan came to the conclusion that no one should embark upon such a challenging journey alone. He made a commitment to do his best to prevent anyone from experiencing a weight loss journey such as his alone. Ryan and Sara have

united to empower health seekers by sharing with them knowledge, training, and nutrition strategies vs. other commonly held approaches of simply combining low calorie diets with heavy cardio workouts. Ryan and Sara have successfully coached others toward a more all-encompassing, long term lifestyle approach to well-being and fabulous fitness. The beauty of Precision Fitness is that, no matter what your workout or lifestyle preferences may be, there’s something for everyone, and you’ll

find it here. Options run the gamut from traditional bodybuilding to rehabilitation, weight loss, and of course, the meaningfulness of good nutrition. Also, for the competitors among us, Precision Training does provide a service that prepares individuals to go for the gold. Sara is the in-house competition expert, having been a participant in National Physique Committee contests. These words ring true with just one glance at her ripped and toned body! Ryan has been an excellent trainer to Sara, and many others. They are a dynamic

duo who complement one another as they collaborate to push their clients to ultimate form, the physique of their dreams. Precision Fitness is not short on options. Private one-on-one sessions are their specialty, but group training sessions are also an option. These groups tend to be small in number, allowing the opportunity to give special attention without overwhelming anyone. Ryan describes: “Even with small groups, there’s no excessive hovering, but

“everybody has their own goals, and everybody gets results.” there is attention to detail with each one of our clients. With a small group of 6 people, everyone gets individual attention, and that’s what’s unique about our system: everybody has their own goals, and everybody gets results.” Talk about developing a custom-made physique! Don’t forget, summer is just around the corner…! Ryan and Sara have worked very hard to develop Precision Fitness into the facility and service it is today, and they are deeply appreciative of every single client who has entrusted their health, fitness, and well-being into the dream. Clearly, if you’re looking for a great place to train, a place where you can get the physical results you desire, and enhance your approach to nutrition, quickly get on over to Precision Fitness. Your body will thank you for it!

Joel was in a dead-end job, broke and unsatisfied, so he jumped at the chance. “It wasn’t risky because I was broke anyway,” he says. “May as well be broke doing something I like.”

But much like starting a new workout routine, you just don’t go for the heaviest weights and the most strenuous workouts from the get-go, you build your strength and stamina gradually. Before long the two had a much larger space, better equipment and more clients.

So they started with a little equipment and one client in, of all places, an underground “storage closet,” as Tim jokingly likes to call it. “We started in an underground parking lot, rented like a storage facility, put our equipment down there, started slowly getting equipment as clients were coming in,” Tim says. “It was active ocmag.COM

New clients had to be practically led down into the underground structure, all the while probably thinking “What did I get myself into?”

“We saw that people were looking for CrossFit, so we knew that as long as we can be good at what we do, the natural growth will happen,” says Joel, a four-year soccer player at Biola University with a degree in theology. “We were always confident in what we did and the way

we cared for people, but at same time we were taking a huge risk, with everything you had, your time, your resources. Nothing was guaranteed, but we knew we were doing good work.” And that risk and leap of faith paid off with CrossFit Tustin, which was recently voted one of the top CrossFit gyms in Orange County. The full-service Tustin facility offers a number of unique programs, including the Redline program that combines intense cardio mixed with basic resistance training (“CrossFit without the heavy barbell lifts”); Crossfit Young Guns for youthful athletes; CrossFit Elements introductory program; Catalyst Endurance training; Olympic Lifting; and CrossFit Competitor Program for elite athletes. “We’ll continue to improve here, continue to develop our elite athletes, while

maintaining and developing our daily athletes,” says Tim. “We have an established membership base, they come here for community rather than just CrossFit. We don’t need to jump on board the next thing just to keep our members here.” Despite starting from such a “low” place, Tim and Joel have lofty plans for CrossFit Tustin. “We want to have the best, the safest, the most comprehensive CrossFit facility in Orange County,” says Tim. TIPS CROSSFIT STAY THE COURSE WITH SOME HELPFUL TIPS CompetE Against Yourself, Not Others When it comes time to throw down in a wod, go at your own pace. You have to let the intensity find you. You need to create a solid foundation of strength and flexibility in order to progress into more demanding workouts for yourself. Nutrition Is More Important Than What You Lift Nutrition is the key in your life. When you first start out, the quality of your food intake is far more important than the quantity. You may call it whatever you want: Organic, Gluten Free, Raw, Paleo; just eat clean. NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION If there are times you don’t fully understand something, just ask. If you still don’t get it, ask and then ask again. Everyone of us is a newbie at some point. We’ve all been there. Learning the mechanics of certain movements like the squat, dead-lift, kip, or any of those crazy Olympic lifts takes lots of practice. If you need help, don’t be shy, just ask! DON’T TRY TO PR EVERYDAY Not feeling up to the task certain days? That’s fine. Just don’t skip a planned workout just because you don’t think you’re going to kill it. Something is better than nothing. IT WON’T GET EASIER, IT WILL JUST SUCK LESS First off, CrossFit never gets easier, but it will suck way less when you are able to perform the movements at a higher intensity and with better form. So be ready and take it as it comes, this is Crossfit after all! Rest and Recovery ARE KEY Too many newbies (and even those of us who have been doing this for a good minute) get caught up in trying to “kill it” most of the time. Here is an old saying that you need to live by: “You don’t get bigger and stronger from lifting weights, you get bigger and stronger from recovering from lifting weights.” you can do it Remember this, everyone who does Crossfit was once a beginner at CrossFit. You just have to go do it.

Since traveling the globe, embarking on what he describes as “primal” and “life-changing” endurance challenges, The Spartan Race founder Joe De Sena, has had a singular goal: to provide that same sensation of exhilaration and fear to others, along with the transformative benefits.

Born in Howard Beach, Queens, a neighborhood known to tempt young men into drugs and crime, as a young boy De Sena was moved to the relative security of nearby Ithaca by his concerned mother. A few years later, upon his return to his former community, Joe charted his own course, replicating his father’s entrepreneurial spirit. Sometime around age13, Joe created a swimming pool and construction company that expanded from his Howard Beach neighborhood, throughout the borough of Queens and into Brooklyn. At 25, Joe continued to buck local trends. He sold his existing companies and tested the waters of finance on Wall Street. Later, in early 2000,

De Sena proved he was a true Renaissance entrepreneur, and moved his family to Pittsfield, Vermont to operate a farm, a bed and breakfast, and a general store for fellow hikers. Always an active guy, in 2005, De Sena met Andy Weinberg and, through their mutual love of fitness, together they developed a series of challenging obstacle course races for private clients. They designed a 24-hour event, meant to test participants both psychologically and physically, which they dubbed “The Death Race.” De Sena’s experience growing up in a tough neighborhood gave him the ability to conjure up unimaginable obstacles for the event,

including: excavating tree stumps or deadlifting heavy rocks. The Death Race, later lasting up to three days with little sleep for participants, was a true test of endurance, and people loved it! Sometime after the fourth annual Death Race, De Sena was pressured to create an event that would be available to the masses- not just the elite Death Race crowd. This new venture became the popular obstacle race series known as Spartan Race.

the ability to complete three different race distances in a year and collect the coveted Trifecta medal.

As De Sena’s company grew across the U.S., international interest grew. At first, Spartan Race tested the European market in Slovakia, and later found success in Australia, Mexico, Germany, and beyond. Ever expanding, in 2013, Spartan Race broadened its stadium series to include CITI Field, Miller Park and AT&T Park. Trained by Yancy, Pro Spartans Isaiah Vidal and April “OCR” Dee agree. “I count on a solid nutrition plan like the one below, for that winning edge,” says April.

The question often comes up when I talk to Spartan athletes, “How do I optimize my nutrition plan on race day?” Well the simple answer is, keep it simple. One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is changing things up with new foods or supplements on race day. Your game day nutrition plan should be consistent, science based, and produce results in training. According to Yancy Culp, Spartan athlete and trainer for many top-ranking Spartan Pro Team athletes, “Things can fall apart fast when athletes ignore the basic rules of sports nutrition fueling. I can still compete at an elite level at the age of 43, because I know how to use science to optimally fuel my body.”

BROTHERS AND FAMILY story by : STAFF Photos: BETO MENDOZA

Imagine being able to get boxing lessons from champion Manny Pacquiao or passing tips from Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, even one-on-one instruction on basketball with NBA great LeBron James. While the Mendes brothers, Guilherme and Rafael, haven’t quite reached the lofty status of those superstars, they are stars in their own right in their profession, Brazilian jiu jitsu, with almost 40 world and national championship titles under their belts. And they’re still young, 26 and 24, respectively.

Now practitioners of jiu jitsu can get personalized, handson training from the Brazilian brothers from São Paulo at their stylish, white-on-white facility in Costa Mesa, The Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy. The brothers opened the academy in July 2012 with sponsor and patron Pat Tenore, co-founder of the sports clothing line RVCA. The Mendes brothers, who started in jiu jitsu when they were just 11 and 12 years old, have made it their mission to spread the benefits and lifestyle of jiu jitsu through their academy. “We want to make an impact on this area, share jiu jitsu and the lifestyle that comes with jiu jitsu,” says Rafael, a six-time world champion. “Because once you start training you want to eat healthy, you want to be in shape, it’s so good for you, good for your family. That’s why we want people to come here, to live as a better person, that’s most important for us.” Guilherme and Rafael are professors at the academy, with assistance from five accomplished coaches, all of whom compete in jiu jitsu on the national and world levels. But the two are also working on their burgeoning careers in the sport of Brazilian jiiu jitsu, which is an offshoot of the ages-old Japanese style and features grappling and more of a ground fighting style. “Our goal now is to keep competing, training at a high level, and at the same time, for us, the most important, is to keep growing the academy and being able to share jiu jitsu with the active ocmag.COM

community,” says Guilherme, a seven-time world champ himself. “We have the academy to influence everyone’s life here.” And since jiu jitsu was a motivating and inspiring force for them early in their life in Brazil, they wanted the academy to focus on kids and families too, offering classes from kids and beginners to those who want to compete at a higher level. “It’s not like a fight club, we have kids as young as 3 years old,” says Guilherme. “We have a lot of families where the mom and the dad train in jiu jitsu, and with all the kids. It makes the familiy stronger.” The brothers, who were trained and mentored by the renowed Brazilian jiu jitsu coach Ramon Lemos, came to the U.S. in their late-teens to compete in world championships. Here they met Tenore, who took a shine to the youths and offered to pay their expenses to live here and train in exchange for them training him in the art. “Pat Tenore, he was person who made everything possible for us,” says Rafael. “It was really cool. A dream come true.” And the dream continues for the brothers with The Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy and their new additions to the family.

TIPS JIU JITSU BEGINNER TIPS TO HELP YOU STAY ON THE MAT Tap and Learn A common mistake for white belts is not learning when to tap. If you’re caught in a submission and can’t get out of it, don’t be afraid to tap. Forget About Rank Obsessing over rank is pointless. How you perform on the mats is what really matters. Stripes won’t make you better, training will. Leave Your Ego AT THE DOOR When you first start training, it’s natural to want to be good. But jiu-jitsu is not just about being good. It’s also about improving your game and helping your training partners improve theirs. Ask Questions If you have questions, ask them. Most instructors and higher ranks will go out of their way to help you with problems or questions you may have. Supplement Your Training Training is the best way to get better at jiu-jitsu. However, just like other sports there are things you can do outside of regular training that will improve your game. Strength training and conditioning for example will help you on the mats. Relax For a white belt, staying relaxed is much easier to say than do. It can be very difficult to know and understand how much energy is required to use when rolling and even training. With time and experience, beginners eventually learn to settle down and efficiently use their energy. Learn The Fundamentals Learning new techniques can be exciting and fun, but as a fresh new white belt, you should be focusing on learning and improving your foundation more than the fancy stuff that comes later. Stick With It There is an expression: “A black belt is a white belt that never gave up.”

Shelley Arends

RHYTHM RIDE Years ago, while waiting for an instructor at a spin class she’d planned to attend, it was with great dismay to realize the instructor was a no show. So this woman, Shelly, who today is the owner of Rhythm Ride in Laguna Beach, actually quickly volunteered to lead the class that day! It was at that moment that Shelly knew she had found her calling, or, as Shelly calls it: “the addiction to teaching”. After 17 years of working in several different spin studios prior to Rhythm Ride, Shelly’s mind was boggled as to why no one used music to go along with the riding. The slow beat rhythms to correspond with the slow climbs, and the fast powerful beats that go along with the more intense and fast-paced portions make a night and day difference to the workout, and on an intuitive level, Shelly deeply understood this. So with this in mind, Shelly started to develop programs that went along with the beat of the music. Simple, yet profound! Shelly also expertly noticed that facing towards the class had far less of a community feeling, so she boldly started jumping in right along next to the class. Shelly recalls: “This was much more powerful: riding with the class, as opposed to facing them.” So after getting fired from a few spin studios for riding along with the class while instructing, and learning the ropes instructing in a few local Laguna studios, Shelly decided to finally open her own studio. Located right off of PacifIC Coast Highway in beautiful Laguna Beach, this marvelous looking studio has the latest, state of the art equipment, an impressive sound system (of course!), and when we paid the attractive studio a visit, the studio was far from a ghost town. We are sure this is why Shelly states: “We pack the house, and people love riding to the beat!” Her choreographed moves are innovative, and she’s developed programs that build core strength, and are, as Shelly describes: “fun!” Very engaging. Today, Rhythm Ride is one of the most successful studios in existence. Shelly’s feet are firmly grounded with her own studio. She has initiated a certification program, and has plans for nationwide instructor certification. This business owner and entrepreneur has goals to make Rhytym Ride the best spin technique in the country. Come join in on the fun!

PURE BARRE The fastest, most effective, as well as safest way to make a positive change to a woman’s body is how Monica Pommier, Owner of four Pure Barre locations in Orange County, describes what makes Pure Barre “a woman’s ideal workout.” Monica started taking Pure Barre classes in order to stay fit and loved the concept so much that combined with her degree in Exercise Physiology and vast experience in the medical profession, she decided to open up her own studio in early 2009. According to Monica, this was to be the first barre studio of its kind in all of Orange County. Monica is a young businesswoman who introduces movements in an isometric way, a way that uses small movements designed to follow along with great music, an experience that leads to a workout that is extremely time efficient! The purpose of the barre is to provide stabilization and support during the workout, not entirely unlike the way a ballerina utilizes it. The Pure Barre technique is amazing because it allows for the participation and inclusion of any woman, regardless of her shape, size or age. This is a workout that is definitely appropriate for anyone, despite what level they may be at during any given moment in time. It’s quite an experience to be in a room with a vast array of diverse women all enjoying the same workout, and this is only because Monica works with a staff of trainers who are experienced and highly equipped to give proper instruction, as well as provide necessary corrections, and it’s all on an individualized basis. Classes are typically 55 minutes long. The workout usually begins with a nice Pilates-based warm-up that’s designed to help strengthen and tone the upper body region. To see some real changes in your body, Monica recommends you take this class 3 to 4 times a week in order to witness some real results. After the warm-up, here’s what you can expect: variety! This is because, as Monica mentions, the choreography of the routines vary. This workout is quick, very time-efficient, and perfect for those who need to get in, get out, and keep their day moving after a great exercise routine. What’s more, there are also couples workouts available. Couples workouts have been proven to aid couples who wish to get out and stay active together as a unit. Learn more about this and other workout classes by checking out any of Monica’s four Pure Barre locations in Orange County: Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, Irvine, and Huntington Beach. active ocmag.COM

JEFF BROWN

GARDEN GROVE CROSSFIT There isn’t anything sedentary about Jeff Brown. An athlete his entire life, he’s been involved in competitive hockey from the age of 6, up until college at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). Realizing in high school that the sport attracted the burly kids, he started weight training to pack on muscle and level the playing field. In doing so, he discovered a love for bodybuilding. The pursuit of fitness continued after graduation, in Jeff’s early 20s, when a buddy dropped the unfamiliar word “crossfit.” The rest is history. Crossfit®, initially designed for functional fitness, morphed into Jeff’s uniquely styled vision, Crossfit Garden Grove. Cultivating his baby for the local community, he provides inspiration and a “small-box feel” for those entering his gym, and a directive to check egos on the way in. From soccer moms, seniors, military men and women, and public safety personnel, to long-time Crossfit members, the common denominator is the attraction of training in a friendly, supportive environment. Whether a recently-retired beginner, or a younger battle-tested veteran, you can find a customized training program to complete at your own pace and intensity level. Located in an industrial area of Garden Grove, California, this Crossfit gym is the one you were meant to find. F I T N E SS M A D E F U N C T I O N AL AOC had a chance to visit Battlehouse Fitness’s flagship showroom in Brea, CA and get an inside look at what makes them one of the leading fitness equipment companies in the O.C. story by : STAFF Photos: JB JAKUBEK, BATTLEHOUSE

Getting laid off from his job may have been the best thing to ever happen to Eric Huerta. That was eight years ago. Now Huerta is the founder and owner of Battlehouse Fitness Equipment Development Center in Brea, one of OC’s leading fitness equipment companies. After he lost his job Eric could have sat around collecting his unemployment check and play video games all day, but he wasn’t exactly the type to do that. A lifelong athlete who competed in active ocmag.COM

virtually every sport offered in high school, from cross country to wrestling and basketball, Eric was passionate about staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Easier said than done, he quickly found out. Much of the fitness equipment he wanted to use was cheaply made, had to be ordered online sight-unseen and overpriced. So he did his homework, researching ways to make his own workout equipment. Armed with his own equipment, Eric would work out wherever he could: in a gym, a local park, the beach, even a

parking lot. And he noticed a curious thing when he was working out. “I was approached constantly, people were always asking me for the equipment I was training with,” he says, telling the curious it was one-of-a-kind pieces he made himself. “I would sell it because they would offer me double or triple what it cost me to make it. And they loved the quality of it. From that point on I constantly had to keep replacing it. Finally, his wife asked him why he kept selling his personal workout equipment to complete strangers. “Well, people keep asking for it, so why not?” he’d answer. “So I saw there was a draw there and a really big market for quality products and someone who is accountable.” So, working out of his garage at first, Eric launched Battlehouse, a name taken from two very different concepts, one, the fight he had to get his business off the ground and two, house and home, something near and dear to his heart. “Nothing is more sacred than your house, this is what you protect, this is what you are,” he says. But Eric isn’t just content to sell equipment, he’s looking at a much bigger picture.

“I’m looking to change the industry. I’m looking to actually evolve it, to change the way people train,” he says. “I’m not looking to be a seller of product, I’m looking to be an innovator for ways to work out and redevelop the way you work out.” Battlehouse does this by integrating various forms of workouts, making the equipment more interactive, versatile and multi-dimensional, bringing the term “crosstraining” to a whole new level. Using such things as channel and track systems, integrated pegboards and integrated grip holes and mixing in heavy bags, ropes and rings, Battlehouse can not only make the equipment cross-functional, but use much less space than a conventional gym. “That’s where we’re from, that’s the mindset, to maximize usage. Not only in space, but in equipment,” he says. “Making the most out of small amounts of space, that’s really our forte.” 69

active ocmag.COM

The equipment, however, is only as good as the person standing behind it, Eric contends. “The truth of the matter is, it’s not the equipment that people are buying, they’re buying you,” he says. “And if they’re buying you, that means they’re buying the fact that you’re 100% accountable and know what you’re talking about and people will read through the BS. If I’m moderately successful and people keep coming back to me because the quality is there and the innovation is there, then for me that’s a success.”

A COUPLES STORY ON HOW THEY STARTED THEIR DREAM

ANAXMETHODS Where are you both originally from and how did you two meet? Nick: I was born in Newport Beach, California and grew up in Orange County. When I was 25, I received a sponsorship from Controlled Labs supplements. One of the marketing directors just happened to be Veronica’s best friend and introduced us via Facebook. active ocmag.COM

Veronica: I am originally from Saginaw, Michigan so when I met Nick I didn’t really expect too much to come of it. After several months of getting to know each other we decided to see if we had the same chemistry in person. I moved to Orange County in the summer of 2011 and the rest is history.

From the looks of it, you both have been training for a good minute, how did you two start your fitness quest? Nick: I grew up skateboarding and surfing but didn’t get into serious weight training until I was about twenty-three. It quickly turned from a hobby to a passion. I loved the way it made me feel about myself and de-

cided then that I wanted to pursue a career in the fitness industry. Veronica: My dad introduced me to fitness when I was very young. I would lift little weights with him in our basement while we watched Pistons games on TV. I grew up playing basketball and played sports all through high school. After high school I knew that I wanted to work

in the health and fitness industry so I got my first personal training certification. How did Anax come to life and what is “The Anax Methods”? Nick and Veronica: Anax Methods is an idea we had after we started getting more and more inquiries about online coaching and personal

training. We wanted to take on as many clients as we could but we weren’t able to dedicate 100% to everyone. We wondered how we could deliver our own custom ways of training to several people at once while still being affordable and the business was born. Really, the Anax Method isn’t just one particular method. It’s a way for us to offer 77

our own personal spin on tried and true fitness and nutrition ideas. One of the major parts of Anax Methods is offering exclusive programs designed by some of our fitness professionals because we find that variety is the best way to stay motivated Anax looks like it offers clients something different, what does Anax do that is unique for its clients? Nick and Veronica: We listen to our clientele. We don’t offer cookie cutter programs. We really take into account what our clients and followers want. We know that not everyone will benefit from the same exact routine so we try and design our programs so that the person using it

will be able to grow and progress and really make it their own. Who would you like to thank? Nick and Veronica: First and foremost, our families. They have supported us every step of the way through ALL of our mistakes and setbacks. We couldn’t be more thankful for our families. A very special thanks to Brandan Schieppati and his gym Rise Above Fitness in Huntington Beach for giving us the opportunity to train at his gym and always being there for both of us as a mentor and especially as a friend. We’d also like to thank Active OC Magazine for giving us the chance to be part of this issue.

Arm ageddon

The end of arm workout monotony

For many people, building strong, defined arms can be challenging. Feeling like you’re not progressing can leave you discouraged when it comes to training this muscle group. Anax Methods has put together a detailed program specifically targeting the biceps, triceps, and forearms. Arm-ageddon is a training program designed to build lean muscle by focusing on a slow and steady contraction. When you start Arm-ageddon be sure to keep these tips in mind:

• Never sacrifice form just to lift heavier weight. The best way to train any muscle group is to avoid injuring it. • When performing standing bicep curls, don’t let your body’s momentum bring the weight up for you. Focus only on contracting the biceps. • When it comes to working your triceps, try changing the movements up a bit by reversing your grip, using a decline or incline bench and to alternate between machines, cables, and free weights to isolate all the parts of the muscle.

NEWPORT AQUATIC CENTER A BACK BAY Favorite FOR THE LOCALS If it floats and requires a paddle or oar to propel it forward, then the Newport Aquatic Center in Newport Beach can teach you how to use it, rent it to you or have you become a member of one of their many award-winning competitive teams. Whether you’re a newbie wanting to learn how to standup paddleboard or an Olympic-class rower who wants to hone their skills, and virtually everything in between, the non-profit center on Newport’s scenic Back Bay is the place to find it. “Whatever someone wants to try, we can get them out there on the water,” says Kelly Thompson, NAC outrigger coach and office manager. “And if we can’t, we can point them in the right direction.” But more than likely they’ll have it there for you. Their 18,000-square-foot facility not only has room for 400-plus outrigger canoes, kayaks, standup pad-

dle boards and rowing shells, but houses a large multi-purpose meeting room, cardiovascular and weight-training facilities with indoor rowing machines and locker rooms for men and women. And you don’t have to be a member to use their equipment or facilities, although membership has its perks and special benefits (such as the ability to store your own vessel there). You can rent a standup paddleboard, a kayak or even an outrigger canoe (think Waikiki Beach in Hawaii) for an hour or two, try it out, see if you like it and go from there. “We offer lessons in all our sports, so you could get a lesson in standup paddling or kayaking or outrigger,” says

Kelly, an experienced coach who started out as a rower on NAC’s junior outrigger team. “If you want to learn something, we can teach you.” The center also does a lot of community outreach, not only to schools, but to AA groups, sober living homes, inner city kids, veterans groups such as the Wounded Warrior Project and charities such as cancer and cystic fibrosis groups. One of the success stories is the City of Santa Ana’s Project P.R.I.D.E. (Parks and Recreation Inspires Dignity and Esteem) in which youths are shuttled in from the city and given the opportunity to participate in paddling and rowing watersports. “It gives them a direction, something in their life to look forward to, it’s a great program,” says Kelly, who adds that one of those kids who participated in the project now works at NAC. Members of the Junior Outrigger Team get high school credit for participating and competing. There are currently 170 students in

the rowing program and 40 in the junior outrigger program, with 12 NAC coaches, all of whom went through the same program. NAC, which was founded in 1982 and became a non-profit corporation in 1987, also hosts a number of races and regattas, including the The Hal Rosoff Classic paddling race and Off Da Couch Race, Sam Couch Memorial Race, and participates in several fund-raising and charity events during the year. NAC’s rowing, canoe, outrigger canoe and kayak teams have won a number of national championships titles and NAC members have won 12 Olympic gold medals so far.

whatever someone wants to try, we can get them out there on the water

“Every day we’re trying to figure out ways to make us stronger,” says Kelly. “There’s always something we can improve on. We’re always aiming for that, always aiming to be the best facility, open to anyone who wants to come down and who wants to get on the water.” 95

TERRAIN

BEGGINER Crystal Cove State State Park Crystal Cove State Park is a perfect hike for just about anyone wanting to get their feet wet (literally). Now if you consider yourself in the beginner category, you’re probably new to hiking. Don’t worry, it’s only as involved as you want it to be. In fact, you can look at this hike as an extended walk on the beach. This Crystal Cove hike is about a 4 mile loop that takes you from the parking lot down to the tide pools where you can explore the local wildlife. Although I rate this hike as easy, you do need to walk down to the beach, walk on sand, and eventually walk back up the hill to your car so be prepared for a little workout.

INTERMEDIATE All things hiking to get you connected with nature. Whether you’re just looking for a child friendly afternoon stroll or a heart pounding climb up a snow capped peak, Orange County and its neighboring mountains has what you need to get you inspired and on the trail. In this section, we will review trails of various skill levels and give you an in-depth look at what to except on each hike. We will go over terrain features, difficulty levels, and other pertinent information to get you out and back safely while maxing out the fun scale. Not sure of what to take with you? We have you covered. In future issues, we will cover packing lists for everything from day hikes to ultralight backcountry trips and everything in between. Look for unbiased gear reviews of the latest equipment as well as proven favorites. There is a lot to cover so stay tuned! We look forward to connecting with the local hiking community and appreciate your feedback. Happy trails! active ocmag.COM

Aliso Wood Canyon For the person with a few hikes under their belt, check out the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, located in Laguna Niguel. It’s absolutely huge with miles and miles of trails to explore. Aliso and Wood Canyon has something for every level of hiker. You can go for a casual walk with your favorite four legged companion or push yourself up the endless hills until your heart’s content. But be warned: the terrain can be rough at times, so I recommend wearing trail running shoes at a minimum and don’t forget your water! Let’s face it, we live in Southern California and it’s hot and dry most of the year. Do yourself a favor and bring water. You don’t want to be halfway into your hike and realize your 16.9oz bottle of water has just run dry.

ADVANCED Cleveland National Forest Have a little more time and experience? Head out to one of the least visited spots in Orange County the Cleveland National Forest. With over 450,000 acres of wilderness, exploration is limited only by one’s imagination. There are so many miles of trails with enough switchbacks to quiet even the most ambitious hikers. And the best part? It’s all right here in Orange County! We will cover some specific hikes in future issues. Some of the hikes are strenuous and the terrain dangerous, so be sure to practice good safety and hike with a buddy!

MUST HAVE GEAR

NOMAD GOAL 7 If you’re heading out to the wilderness, chances are you have some sort of electronics with you. Whether it be your indispensable iPhone or a handheld GPS, you’re going to need power because eventually you’re going to run out. Well, here’s one way to get back in the game. Goal Zero has a whole lineup of solar panels and chargers to meet anyone’s demands. My personal choice? The Goal Zero Nomad 7 with the Nomad 10 Battery Charger. This little powerhouse charges my iPhone, audio recorder, and keeps my headlamp batteries topped off on overnight trips. This eliminates the need to carry extra sets of spare batteries of various sizes and ensures me power for as long as I need. Tip: use the recharged AA batteries in the Nomad 10 Plus Battery Charger to charge your iPhone, then recharge the AA batteries using the solar panels. This will ensure uninterrupted charging of your device. 97
