When I was a teenager growing up in Torrance, CA I was always fascinated with the publishing world. In college I majored in English, with the dream of someday becoming an Editor of a magazine. After graduating from the University of California Riverside I had my first job as a loan officer. It was a job, but definitely not fulfilling, so I sought out to find a career that made me happy and pursued my passion for the arts.

@ceo

While searching for a career, I interviewed with a radio station and noticed a copy of Lowrider Magazine women unite on the table. I picked it up and the interviewer told me that the magazine was a “men’s publication,” and

By: Rose Barraza | @rosemarie9 Growing up as a millennial in this digital age of social media has many benefits, such as quick and creative inspiration at your fingertips. Last year I came across the Instagram profile belonging to Cara Alwill Leyba, a best selling author, speaker, and master life coach. I immediately clicked the follow button once I saw her creative and glamorous feed, plus her #goals Instagram handle, which is @thechampagnediet. Leyba has a unique and motivating brand that encourages women to celebrate the wins and losses that occur in our lives everyday. There is always an alternative way to view a situation, even if that includes a glass of champagne. After years of rejection from publishers, Leyba has self-published four books, with her most recent being “Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur.” Which in July 2016 was named one of the “Top 9 books every female entrepreneur should read” by Inc. magazine, alongside Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, Thrive by Arianna Huffington, and Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso. I would read multiple chapters of Girl Code at my local nail salon, pausing in between, to snap cute quotes from the book for social media. I would take notes, highlight, place post-its, and bookmark pages I loved. Leyba kept me inspired the entire time and I constantly walked out with my eyebrows and nails on fleek, ready to take over the world. Leyba motivates me daily, on Instagram and Snapchat, and I didn’t want anyone to miss out on that extra push that we know we all need. So, you can imagine my excitement when we scheduled our phone interview. We talked about where her inspiration comes from, how social media has helped her business, diligent women, her next book, and the advice we all need to hear.

Hi Cara! I’m a huge fan, I loved Girl Code, and I’m so excited to talk to you today. I know you had a long career at MTV, then you quit and turned your side hustle into a new career, so for those who don’t know, what is The Champagne Diet? The Champagne Diet is really a lifestyle; it’s potentially a way for women to live better. Champagne is used as a metaphor, to celebrate ourselves, to celebrate life, and to be the best women that we can be. I always associated champagne with glamour, luxury, and elegance. So, those are the kinds of things that I wanted to bring into my own life, because I went through a whole journey to get there. So now I try and inspire that with other women and try and help them make that same transformation. Interesting. I follow you on Snapchat and Instagram and you’re always so inspiring, I’m curious to know where the inspiration for The Champagne Diet came from? Thank you! Initially it started as an actual quest to find a cocktail that I could drink that wouldn’t break the bank, calorie wise. I was at MTV and I thinking about going on another diet, I joined Weight Watchers for the first time when I was 11. I’ve never really been overweight, but at the time, I was overworked, exhausted, no time to exercise, or eat healthy. I was having a conversation with one of my co-workers and she said, “Cara just stop dieting, this is crazy, you’re on a new diet every week, it’s not working it’s just making you miserable. Just start eating better, start eating organic, whole foods, nothing processed, just move your body in a natural way.” I listened to her and thought great I’ll do whatever you tell me to do, but can I still drink? Because at the end of a long day, as hard working women, we want to know that we can come home and unwind with a glass of wine or be social with our girlfriends. At the time I was working in advertising, so I was always out with clients. My coworker looked at me and said, “Yes of course you can still drink, just make sure you only drink champagne.” That was the initial idea of where The Champagne Diet came from. It was a joke and every

time I went out I was always the girl drinking champagne. So it was actually truly inspired by a glass of champagne, but then so many other things have inspired it along the way and it’s just evolved into what it is today. Very cool! I know your presence on social media is growing and you’re very active and involved, how has social media helped your business? It’s been amazing, one of the things that people forget when creating things, especially creative entrepreneurs, is that you’re creating something to impact people to affect change in them and to inspire. So if you leave people out of the equation, you’re missing the point. Social media is such a great way for me to connect with my readers, my fans, the women who reach out to me and tell me very personal stories about their own lives and journeys. Without it, there would just be a huge missing piece. It’s also instant feedback, which is amazing. I look back at my weekly Instagram posts and see what did best, what got the most comments, and what resonated with my followers. That’s a priceless tool that people didn’t have before. Social media really allows us to engage with people and I try to keep that at the front of my mind. Smart, I love that women can reach out to you and when you get the chance, you actually respond. What do you think women need to know in order to chase their dreams? You need to know that you are going to fail and you have to be okay with that. I fail all the time. I try to talk about that stuff honestly with my readers. If you look at any successful person like Oprah, for example, who I love and we can all agree is such a power house. She has probably failed at more things than we can ever imagine. She’s not up there talking about them all the time, we see the successes, but anyone who has ever done anything great, has failed. So go out there, not wanting to fail, but being okay if you do, it’s really an opportunity to grow from and it’s only going to make you better.

I love that! What advice would you give your younger self? Don’t take everything so seriously. Lighten up a little bit. I was struggling in so many different things whether that was relationships, or just career stuff, but it will be okay. I know that you’re working on your next book, what can we expect from you this time? The next book is going to be very focused on being a more empowered woman and learning how to live better. It’s going to touch on work for sure, but it’s not going to just be geared toward entrepreneurs. What I did with Girl Code was good, because it hadn’t been done before, and there were a lot of things in there that people were able to open up to. It’s funny because a lot of my readers weren’t entrepreneurs, and they were able to still take valuable advice from the book. So the next one is going to be more about being a woman, from the way that you live your life, relationships, the way that you style yourself, your home, and mind. It’s going to be an elevated version of Girl Code. I’m constantly growing and evolving and I want my readers to be able to come on that journey with me. Do you have any last advice for women who are chasing after their dreams? Remember that you have to start somewhere. I was just approached by a major champagne brand and we’re going to start working together and it’s a total dream come true. My husband and I were laughing the other day because I use to do these terrible YouTube videos with these tiny companies. We were cracking up thinking about how bad these videos were, they were so cheesy and I had no idea what I was doing. But I put it out there, I had to start, I had to learn from that. You have to start somewhere, having all of these behind you, whether they’re failures or things you cringe at now, it’s great to be able to see how far you’ve come and without starting somewhere you’re never going to have an evolution and you’re never going to grow.

Love Isn’t All Black and White

Entering The Gray with Enitan Bereola II “The price for sex is marriage… the price for a relationship is commitment-it’s hard to ask a man to pay for either when you’re giving both for free,” writes Enitan Bereola II, in his second book titled Gentlewoman: Etiquette For A Lady, From A Gentleman. Mr. Bereola wrote a book for you, yes you, the one reading this article, it’s for you and about you. As girls we had no worries, we were told we were pretty, we could be anything we wanted to be, but as we matured, those messages changed. We earned a degree, we have careers, but still deep down inside, some of us forget our worth. Mr. Bereola recognized that, so he wrote this book with love, about the modern woman who has character, is punctual, happy and honest, but settles for what we think we deserve. The media bombarded us with one standard image of beauty, we listened and before we knew it, we lost our sense of self. Millions of young women wanting to look like a Kardashian or Jenner rather than themselves. Some of us got lost in this patriarchal system that says our appearance is all that matters. We forgot that we have more to contribute to this world.

@career

“Pretty might open doors, but intellect lets you in-Don’t be stuck outside with your pretty ass,” writes Mr. Bereola. Gentlewoman covers everything from texting, etiquette, celebrity interviews, healthy living, and even self-breast exams. This book encourages you to reflect on who you are, acknowledge your authentic self, give yourself credit for all of your achievements, straighten your crown with a glass of wine in hand, and enjoy life. Who taught you to be the man that you’ve grown into today? Everybody that I’ve ever met, I use to credit my parents and grandparents, but then I’d say, “Well, what about my friends? I have a great group of friends. What about my wife? What about the people from church? My teachers?” Everybody I’ve ever met has shaped me into the man that I am. I try to be careful when I meet people and pay attention to what it is that I’m getting from them. Like if we don’t connect, I try to look at the reasons as to why, and learn from that. There’s something to learn from everybody. What was the defining moment when you decided to turn your writings into a published piece? It was never really a desire of mine, until a mentor told me that I should write a book that reflects my life. Since he knew me, he hung around me a lot, he saw how I treated others, and how I maneuvered in society. I thought it was a crazy idea and I was actually really disappointed because he use to tell me he had a business idea for me and I was thinking it was going to be this genius idea that I would be happy to be a part of, because I looked up to this guy. When he told me it was a book I thought, “That’s the genius idea you had?” Because, he was the one to tell me, “I think you should write a book” is literally the only reason why we’re here talking today. God knew that was the one person that I would listen to and that message was delivered through him. Which lead me on the path to my purpose, which now changes so many more lives. You said writing wasn’t the original goal, what was your original goal? Well I’m from Silicon Valley so; I was an IT nerd working in technology. I went to school for it and worked for Hewlett Packard. I was a product of my environment since I was always surrounded by tech, so that’s what I gravitated toward. It was a hobby more than a passion, but I knew I couldn’t be confined to a cubicle with my type of personality. That’s a complete change! So, what pulled me into the book was the fact that you empowered how women viewed themselves, versus being worried about how men view us. Which trait should every woman have, not necessarily because they’re lacking it, but a trait that women need to be reminded of by a book like yours? Love. I’m guilty of saying self-love, but love is love, period. Whether

[ ATTRACT ]

16 www.attractmag.com

it’s giving or receiving. Love is the most powerful tool that cancels out everything and makes everything easier. I found that a lot of what looks like love, isn’t love. People, who look like they love themselves or love each other, aren’t really loving at all. I would meet beautiful women with the lowest of self-esteem. On the exterior you would think one thing, but it was really totally something different going on inside. After a while people became very transparent to me. I would feel bad for this person and wish that someone would speak to this person. I wished there was a voice, I wished I could have a conversation them. It would fuel me. A lot of times people would say, I felt like the author was talking to me when they were reading it, because I was. I was literally writing to the people that I would see, even some of the people that I knew. That was one of the methods I chose to write it in, because I wanted to penetrate through all the noise and get to your soul and be like, “No, I’m talking to YOU!” And people would be like, “Oh, wow! How does he know my story?” That’s why people had highlighters and post-its. That’s how I felt when reading the book. That’s all that I was giving back to you. First I was just telling you who you are, a lot of people don’t know who they are. Despite whatever lie you’ve heard. I was like, “NO, this is who you are.” Then I was just giving you guys love, that’s it and if it’s resonating so well, then that tells me that’s what’s missing and that’s what the solution is. Right! What would you say is the first crucial step to a woman loving herself? You have to believe that you are exactly who God says you are and knowing that that’s the truth and anything that negates that is a lie. These lies are told to specifically chip away at you to make you more vulnerable and your spirit less strong. They make you more susceptible. You are exactly who God says you are and when you do know that and you test it out, you start to walk in it, and then you start to have evidence of it to be true. Every step, you continue to see more and more evidence that continues to build you up which is why you keep walking in it. Which is why people say to you “OMG how did you become so confident?” “I want to be more like you,” and some people get too caught up in that and say, “Thank you.” Not giving credit to where or whom they got it from in the first place. In terms of “ride or die” chicks, when do you think enough is enough? It’s a real subtle lie, you don’t realize a lot of times when it is enough, because you’ve slowly compromised so much of what your values and cores are, it’s gotten further and further along, and you don’t even notice, because you’ve been having so much fun. You’re so caught up in this thing that you’re like, “Oh shoot there goes my morals,” and then since those are all gone you’re like, “Well shoot I could lose a few values too.” It’s hard to get out of those situations, but it’s important

@qoutes

“I don’t want to change you. I want to add to you.”

to always assess a situation. That’s why women that give men a hard time are usually the greatest women because what they’re doing, generally, when they’re doing it right, is they’re having a good time with this person, but they’re taking a step back and assessing saying, “Wait a minute, have I compromised any values? Am I going too fast?” Sometimes it feels like a tug, push, and pull and most men don’t make it through that, but the ones that do, got them a really good woman. If you eliminate emotions, and think about what’s going on and if it still feels right or something isn’t going right, I think it’s best to make that known.

How should a gentleman and a gentlewoman, by your definition, love each other in today’s society with so much technology around us? It’s funny you said that, because that’s exactly what The Gray is about, my third book, that’s dead on what it’s about. You have a gentleman that’s read Bereolaesque, a gentlewoman that has read Gentlewoman, and there are these new kinds of people who stick out in the world because they don’t do things the way the rest of the world does things. So that’s fine and dandy, but there’s this gray area that we have to account for that everybody goes through. Nothing is ever perfect. It’s more of an encouraging piece beyond the first two books, which allows you to meet each other halfway. Once this book releases, what’s your next big goal? Wow! The goal is to get the message across by any means available to me as far as the creativity will take me. Everyone has a message in his or her art, whether it’s literature, filming, or painting. So, whatever channel I choose to tell the story, then that’s what I’m going to do. There’s more I want to do and more ways I want to deliver this message, so whatever crazy idea I think of in the moment will be it, but it will all tie back into the main message of love.

Tips to Save You Financial Heartache in Your 30’s

My Money My Future

We all make mistakes in our 20’s but one of the most regrettable ones relate to our finances, so let me save you some financial heartache. Here are 5 easy to follow tips that will guarantee you are not trippin about cash in your 30’s. As with most things in life, we overcomplicate personal finance, and because it seems like a pain in the ass, we end up not taking care of business but the first rule of managing your money is keeping an eye on it, so that’s why we start with budgeting. 1. Get on a Budget and Don’t Be Afraid to Check Your Account Like most habits, the more you do it, the easier it becomes – same is true with budgeting. The simple budget formula for any income is simply 50/20/30. It breaks down like this; no more than 50% of your income should go to “fixed” costs like rent, bills--things you must-pay; 20% should go to your savings, like retirement and emergency savings; lastly no more than 30% should go towards “spending money” or “flex” costs. Of course, the problem is that most of us never know our numbers, so we just spend and hope there is enough to pay the bills. Sign up for the My Money My Future web-app and get your free automated budget tracker. 2. Start funding Your Emergency Savings Account An emergency savings is a must have at any age, but the sooner you get started the better. Ideally, people should have six times their monthly income saved but we all know that is a high bar to reach, so start with incremental amounts like $1000, then three times your monthly income. Make sure to keep this money in a separate account to ensure you don’t dip into it for non-emergencies. 3. Take Care of Your Credit One of my biggest regrets of my 20’s was not taking care of my credit. You don’t realize how much of a penalty you pay for bad credit, but let me tell you, it is a lot. Your credit score is based on a number of factors but the two most important are 1) your credit utilization rate and 2) late payments. Keep you credit card spending to below 30% of your credit limit and make sure to automate your payments. Download the My Money My Future financial 360 to track your credit utilization.

4. Open up a retirement account Listen very closely, it is not how much you invest, it is how long you invest, so if you want to start building some wealth, no matter how broke you feel, start with putting away small sums of money away in your 20’s and watch compound interest do it’s magic. Even if you do not have a 401(k) offered through your employer, you can still open up a Roth IRA. There are now a number of low cost options to set up these types of accounts. See A Plan for Your Roth IRA. 5. Know Your Net Worth But Don’t Let it Define You Buy assets, meaning things that will increase in value (yes, ladies, even some purses are considered assets because they are easily convertible into cash) and be mindful of your debt. Your net worth is the sum of your Assets minus your liabilities (debts). Spend your money on experiences not things. Prioritize going on trips and doing things that you will remember, unlike those expensive late night sprees at Target.

LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCILWOMAN NURY MARTINEZ By: Rose Barraza @rosemarie9

[ ATTRACT ]

20 www.attractmag.com

The female perspective is lacking in politics and Nury Martinez, the only woman serving on the Los Angeles City Council, is trying to change that. Growing up as a young Mexican American girl in Pacoima, CA, Martinez was fascinated by politics. Martinez would watch the nightly news with her father discussing politics and the qualifications one must acquire to become an elected official. Martinez would research

and ask questions, knowing that one day she would eventually become an elected official after graduating from Cal State University Northridge with a degree in political science. Martinez was attending San Fernando High School when Price Pfister, the company that had employed her mother, announced they would be moving to Mexico. Martinez’s mother Julia and her co-workers organized hunger strikes and picket lines in an attempt to convince the company to stay. This job was important to the Martinez family because her mother applied almost every day for five years, checking in with human resources, until she was finally hired. It was a good paying union job and the Martinez family finally had health care benefits. Many of the employees fought to keep their jobs, Nury worked as an interpreter throughout the process, but a few years after the announcement the company followed through with the move. The move caused many families to lose their homes, forced many into early retirement, diminished household incomes, and forced students to drop out of college because they had to help their parents survive the chaos. Martinez’s dad Isidro was a dishwasher and with the loss of her mother’s union job, it was out of necessity and desperation that she continued to work hard and create change. Martinez is proud to serve as the only woman on the Los Angeles City Council, but finds it pathetic that there aren’t more women involved in politics. “We cannot be what we cannot see,” said Martinez, “This is

not a career that a lot of girls see themselves in.” Referring to the fact that it’s up to us to teach girls that it’s cool to excel in academics, especially math and science, while also teaching them about women’s history in this country and the need to continue to strive for more. Martinez stressed the fact that we need more women to run for political positions, but it’s not happening because the women who are terming out of their positions are not grooming other women to take their seats once they’re gone. Men, on the other hand, are being groomed and prepped for years, so once the seat is open they’re prepared, while women decide to run at the last minute which is not the recipe for a successful campaign. According to Martinez, Los Angeles is losing out on great natural leaders simply because they’re not in the pipeline of being groomed for success. Women bring a different perspective to a table full of men on different issues such as minimum wage, prostitution, rape, child care, domestic violence, and more. “Without gender parity sometimes the woman’s perspective gets lost and we bring something to every debate,” Martinez said. The presidential election has Martinez hopeful for a new wave of inspiration for women all over the country with the message that anything is possible. As an avid Hillary Clinton supporter, Martinez is frustrated with the fact that younger

voters don’t see the value in having Clinton in office. Witnessing and experiencing sex discrimination, Martinez wants to prevent the younger generations from experiencing that and one reason why we need more women in office. Martinez also wants our country to educate society about women’s history, teaching children about Anita Hill and many others who have paved the way for so many of us. It’s our responsibility to elect qualified women and hold them at the same exact standards that we hold the men at, no more, no less. As a local councilwoman, Martinez loves that she gets to go home everyday to her husband Gerry and daughter Isabelle, who is in her own way being groomed for leadership in whichever field she chooses. Martinez plans on serving three full terms in her current seat, which is almost 15-years, because she knows that’s where the power lies to get things done. “I like to point to things that I actually got done” Martinez said. With the help of the LAPD, Martinez has created a Valley-Bureau human trafficking task force to arrest and stop “Johns” from continuing to exploit young girls and women in the 6th district. A few days after our sit down interview, Martinez and LAPD Deputy Chief Bob Green announced over 200 arrests of “Johns” in the area. While her agenda is very busy, when asked what her next big goal was, Martinez responded, “Being the first female mayor is attractive.”

GABRIEL COSMETICS Vegan, Organic and Gluten Free By: Diane Curiel @dianecrl88

Gabriel Cosmetics is a complete organic, vegan, gluten free, cruelty free cosmetic and skincare line. CEO and founder Gabriel De Santino was influenced by his grandmothers’ love of the sea and nature. De Santino started at his own salon in Washington, using his own products on customers. After many requests from his clientele to retail his products he began to do so. From there he expanded to a cosmetic line. When one hears about an all-organic cosmetic line often one questions the quality and texture. After a test and review, I learned that the pigmentation on their shadows and lipsticks are perfect. I didn’t

need to build up to get the true color. The first swatches on all of the products were amazing. Not to mention they felt so light and airy. It felt like I wasn’t wearing makeup. The lipsticks are a silk finish and give you that gorgeous natural look.I am in love with all the products launching this fall and winter. It isn’t often that you find a cosmetics line that is made of 100% natural ingredients. It truly does not get any better than that. Your skin will thank you for using these products. If you haven’t tried this line, it is a must. Gabriel Cosmetics is available online at gabrielcosmeticsinc.com or at your local Whole Foods or Sprouts.

Galit Strugano, founder of Girlactik, turned her hobby and passion for makeup into a career. Strugano was inspired and determined to create a formula for glitter eye shadows that would stay put and not fall off after just a few hours of wear. With only $1800, Girlactik became the talk of the industry, but Strugano knew Girlactik didn’t have the backup, marketing, capital or advertising support that the popular makeup brands had. So the Los Angeles native headed to New York, showing up to major magazine offices wearing her products. Strugano’s persistence paid off when she was featured in major publications like Cosmopolitan, Allure, and Seventeen, to

During this time the brand had gained serious recognition, but had been classified as a teenaged brand. But as Strugano evolved, so did Girlactik. The brand underwent an entire makeover from colors to packaging. The goal was for woman to be able to use any Girlactik product, whether she was getting ready with her girlfriends or

Since turning to social media, Girlactik has gained a huge following of over 192,000 followers on Instagram alone. SARAH STAGE

woman behind the gram By: Rose Barraza @rosemarie9

Social media has changed the way people do business, especially for model Sarah Stage. Sarah started modeling as toddler, took a break, and picked back up during high school. Although her career as a model has been successful, Sarah recently became a social media sensation when she posted a photo of her pregnant self at eight months with very noticeable six-pack abs. People slammed her on social media with nasty comments about her body being unhealthy for the baby and more, but Sarah had confirmed with her doctor that she was right on track. Q: How did you make social media a business tool for you?

Q: How has social media changed the way that you view yourself?

A: Once Instagram came along, it gave me the opportunity to show more of my lifestyle and personality which started a new category for certain models. Brands were able to start booking me directly and gave me creative control to advertise their products in a way that was more casual instead of a typical campaign styled photoshoot. Social media has also given me the opportunity to share a piece of my life instead of just professional modeling photos.

A: I will always view myself the same, I suppose we don’t see ourselves the way others do.

Q: What makes you different from most women? A: I think all women are unique so I don’t really know how I could be different from them. I do know that every woman is special and beautiful in their own way. Q: If you could change anything about yourself, what would that be? A: I try every day to be a better person. I’m constantly making the effort to become the best version of myself so I can be a great mother, wife, friend, sister, and daughter to the ones that I love and care about. Q: How did you start your career? A: My first modeling job was at twoyears-old. Apparently, I took some time off after that and got the modeling bug again when I was in high school.

[ ATTRACT ]

46 www.attractmag.com

Q: You have over a million followers, do you ever feel pressured to always look “perfect” by society’s standards? A: Unfortunately, I’ve learned that I can’t please everyone. When I wear makeup there will be people saying [that] it’s horrible. Then, when I don’t wear makeup some people saying I look horrible. Haha! I just have to laugh about it, anyone who takes the time to write anything negative is really just reflecting their own personal feelings about themselves subconsciously. Whether it’s, bitterness or their own insecurities. Q: How has social media helped you in your career? A: Social media changed my life. It has given me amazing opportunities that I could never have imagined possible. Q: What opportunities has social media brought to you? A: Social media has allowed me to work from home more, go on less auditions, spend more time with my family, build my own brand, and become my own boss.

BUSINESS, MOM-LIFE, AND REALITY TV Basketball Wives Star Angel Brinks is a Woman with Goals Who Will Stop For No One By: Rose Barraza @rosemarie9

Whether you like who producers portray her to be on Basketball Wives LA or you know Angel Brinks personally, we can all agree Brinks is one of many hard working mothers in the industry. Women get a bad rap for being on reality television, but Brinks is soft-spoken, eager to share her story, and hopeful for the future. Attract Magazine caught up with Brinks to talk about launching her clothing line, running a business, Basketball Wives, social media, and her future plans.

Q: How did you get your start in the industry? A: I was always in performing arts ever since I was younger and I always had an eye for fashion. I was always around the performance wear like the leotards, body suits, leggings and back then, I launched my clothing line five years ago, you couldn’t find fly leggings anywhere. So, I wanted to offer leggings, but a with a different approach. Q: We know you have your clothing line, but what else are you involved in? A: In addition to my clothing line, I’m also on the TV show Basketball Wives LA. Filming can be so time consuming because it’s such a long process, so that takes up a lot my time. But I’ve also been working on starting a clothing line for my daughter, which will have leggings for little girl’s two-years-old and up. It’ll be similar to my line, since my line is girly. And I’d also love to do mommy-daughter fashion shows in the future. Q: How do you manage running a million dollar business, reality television, and being a single mother? A: I feel like I have a magical cape in my closet, ha ha, I’m just kidding. I always want to stop and have “me” time, but I just don’t. I’m a full-time mom and I want them to be smart, so I intellectually work with them and dedicate so much time to them. It’s really hard, but it’s all worth it. There will be times where I wake up in the middle of the night because I dreamt of an idea, so I’m usually just working around the clock. I’m always multitasking, because as a mom you have to make time, because kids don’t ask to be here, and I love kids. Q: Congrats on the five-year anniversary of your clothing line launch! What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned through this experience?

A: Thank you. The biggest lesson I’ve learned has been trying to hire the best and most skilled staff members. It’s really hard to find great sewers, because like most other companies, you can send out a sample piece to a manufacturer and mass produce with factory machines, but that’s not what I wanted to do. I wanted to create custom designs for all women and you can’t do that with factory machines. Women are tall, short, curvy, skinny, and so much more. I wanted to create a line where if you’re six-feet-tall with a big chest or vice versa, you’re able to create your own design or pattern with my brand, so it’s very important to have skilled people to keep the customers happy and coming back. Q: How has social media helped your business? A: Social media has helped my business tremendously. I had launched just when Instagram was coming out and it brought so much awareness to my brand. It worked as word of mouth to people all over the world. It was and is the best form of advertisement and it’s free. So, the Internet has definitely been a helpful form of advertisement because that’s exactly what it is. Q: What advice do you have for other young women wanting to start their own business? A: With business you have to be creative, because there are a lot of good ideas out there and almost everything has been done before. You just have to create new ways and be creative with your ideas and hope that other people will see it and want to try it. Celebrities were a big help and the biggest word of mouth for my brand, for sure. Q: Great advice. Moving our way to on-camera, how did you get your start on Basketball Wives LA?

A: Well, Draya is a good friend of mine, she’s been my friend since before the show and at the time I was living in Las Vegas, but I was planning on moving back to LA. When I moved back, I remember she sent me a text on Christmas wishing me a merry Christmas, say “Hi” to the kids, and then asked, “By the way, how would you feel about being on Basketball Wives?” I agreed and originally I was only supposed to do one guest appearance, but after the first day the executive director called me and told me I did well and offered me a spot on the show and we signed contracts from there. Q: What was it really like being on reality TV? A: Well it was definitely exciting, but it made me anxious as well. At first I felt like everyone liked me because I didn’t have any issues with anyone and I’m not a hard person to get along with, but I started realizing that these are all strong women with strong opinions, who are very vocal. There would be times where they would be saying stuff and I would be quiet because I didn’t want to be offensive or hurt anyone’s feelings. My mother always taught me if you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. But later in the show shit got real. At first I went in thinking we could become something like sisters and good friends, because we all have something in common with our basketball men, but that’s definitely not what it was. Q: I can only imagine. What’s your next big move? A: I definitely feel in my heart that I want to stay in the fashion industry, as long as I can, and as long as God allows me to. I want to open more stores and grow my brand because I know I offer creative and unique ideas. I would love to become as big as the well-known designers that we all know of today. And I’ll definitely continue doing more television.

There’s nothing softer or smoother than your baby’s skin. But here’s a secret: those awesome products made ‘just for baby’ can double as your beauty products, too. We caught up with Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Executive Beauty Director, Leah Wyar Romito, and asked her to share her top 5 go-to baby products – both for her little guy and herself. Let’s be honest, it’s never too early to teach your little ones to share.

1) VMV Hypoallergenics Grandma Minnie’s The Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm: Every woman has a do-it-all salve. Lucas Papaw Ointment was my go-to…until I found this. I’ve been a fan of VMV since I first got a facial at their Union Square (now Soho) spa. But I had no idea they made baby products. I use this on everything: Axel’s bum and rosy cheeks, my cuticles and lips. And the packaging just makes me smile. I mean…Salve for Skin ‘Owies’?!

2) Mustela Musti Eau de Soin: Any mommy who’s ever used Mustela can practically conjure its signature scent on demand. To me, it’s heaven. So when I discovered this fragrance? Angels singing. I sprayed it on Axel once, then just stole it. (But FYI, if you want to use it on your baby, awesome! It’s alcohol- and paraben-free and is made with skin-softening plant extracts.)

4) Yes to Baby Carrots Face + Nose Wipes: My little guy goes to day care… so we’re forever battling the runny nose. These save him—and are my fallback when I run out of facial cleansing wipes. Tip: they’re tearfree formula is awesome for eye makeup.

5) CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Cream: This saved us when Axel had a roseola spell a few months ago. I needed to treat his rash with a super bland (but effective) moisturizer and this is the one our pediatrician recommended. Now it’s the only thing I reach for after his Saturday swim class (he’s sensitive to the chlorine)–and my weekly DIY peel!

3) Be Good’s Be Honest OneStep Cleansing Conditioner and Detangler: Recently I walked into Cosmo’s beauty closet (heaven for beauty junkies!) and zeroed in on this (next to its sisters, Be Polite Body Wash and Be Caring Body Lotion). Naturally I swiped them (hey, I’m the only one in the beauty department with a kid!) and fell in love with this particular product for myself. Cleansing conditioners are so hot in the beauty industry—now I can share this with my curly-topped son (who needs all the detangling help he can get).

FRESHLY PICKED The Perfect Little Fit By: Jewel Gould @whataboutmommys

Susan Petersen started making baby moccasins in 2009 after becoming frustrated by the lack of well-designed baby shoes. Using her second child, Gus, as a mocc-tester, and a bag of scrap leather she picked up at a yard sale, she began experimenting with designs. Working from home on her kitchen table with a very tight budget, Susan persisted through several attempts until she had created a pair of moccasins that not only looked adorable on Gus’ chubby little feet, but stayed on his feet as well. Since then the moccasins have gone through about six design changes. Each change has perfected the look and the fit of the softsoled shoe. The moccasins you purchase today are durable, well de-

Her brother owns a window installation business and in the summer of 2009 she convinced him to let her keep the old windows that he was removing from the houses. She spent a whole summer banging the glass out of the windows because they were encased in aluminum frames. At the end of the summer she took the alumi-

A Treadmill Workout With Jenn Padilla By: Jenn Padilla @sweatwithjenn

Intervals are one of the best ways to beat boredom on the treadmill, since playing with speed keeps both your mind and your body engaged during a run. Alternating between periods of pushing your speed with slower-paced recovery periods helps burn body fat. This is an effective way to increase your stamina and build strength in your legs, glutes, core, and arms.

[ ATTRACT ]

74 www.attractmag.com

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Treadmill Resistance Band

1. Start off with a sprint. 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off. Set your treadmill at an incline of 2.5 and speed of 8 mph. You can always adjust your speed to where you are comfortable, but make sure it is a sprint.

DURATION:

Repeat each section 10x Rest for 1 min after each set.

2. Place the band around your ankles and set your incline at 8 with the speed at 2.5 mph. Stay in a low squat position and take small steps. You can adjust the speed to where you are comfortable. (30 seconds)

3. While staying in a low squat position, turn around on the treadmill facing away from the regular position. This time you will be in a low squat position walking backwards. (30 seconds)

Remember, the feeling you get from a good run is far better than the feeling you get from sitting around wishing you were running. - Sarah Condor – issue 3

Living

Your Millennial Denise Hernandez Shares Her Journey By: Rose Barraza @rosemarie9

Tell me about yourself and how you got to this point in your life? My name is Denise Hernandez, I am from Reseda, CA, I am Salvadorian, and fluent in Spanish, which is how I created my blogging name, The Jitana. Jitana, normally spelled gitana in Spanish, means gypsy. My mom always calls me gitana, because she thought I was such a hippie. So, it was the perfect name for my traveling blog. After graduating high school, I attended San Francisco State University, where I graduated with a double major in finance and statistics. I studied business because I am good with numbers, but I have always felt passionate about fashion. Having a business major in the fashion industry has opened many doors for me and has made me a stand out candidate. I applied to jobs related to fashion, whether that was styling, merchandising, or planning. I was determined to apply everywhere until someone reached out to me. I interned for a showroom in New York that gave me the opportunity to live there for a few months. Revolve Clothing also gave me an opportunity to intern, which then turned into a dream career as their assistant buyer. Buying is a mixture of knowing fashion, trends, and numbers, which is totally applicable to my major. I knew Revolve wouldn’t be my last stop, since I have always had trouble with staying in one place for too long. It was sad to go, but I decided that it was time for a change.

issue 3

[ ATTRACT ]

@globetrotter

How did this whole idea of traveling start for you? I grew up traveling, as much as my parents don’t like to admit it, they’re explorers. They lived in New York, Miami, and finally settled in Los Angeles. I was about twoyears-old when I got on my first international flight. For summer trips my dad and I use to fly to El Salvador and then to New York for vacation. One of my first flights alone, accompanied by a flight attendant, was when I was 13-years-old to spend a summer in New York with my cousins. It is really crazy because in elementary I was that kid that would always cry when my parents didn’t pick me up on time. My parents thought I would never leave the nest. If you would have told them 20-years-ago, that I would be moving to Australia they would have laughed and never believed it. What is it that you do for work and how do you fund this lifestyle? That’s the million-dollar question, but there is not much to it. The answer is saving. I am not a millionaire, but I know how to save money. If you set your mind to something and really focus, you can achieve anything. I understand living in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York, can be difficult to save because there’s so much to do in those cities, but if you set a goal for yourself, like traveling, then it can easily be done. I looked at it as, do I want this expensive purse or do I want to live on an island for a month and go scuba diving everyday? It is these life choices that can easily be overcome by focusing on the prize. This was coming from a girl who was surrounded by clothes, the latest trends, and designer everything. I saved everything I could, making sure I had enough to travel for a while, and able to pay a few months of rent in Australia before getting on my feet again. I’m not working while I’m traveling, but I have met so many people who get paid to teach English abroad. That is a really good way to see the world. You don’t even need a college degree, just speak and write English well, and you can see the world. When and where was your first major trip alone and how did that lead to an endless amount of traveling? I was 16-years-old and it was the first time my parents let me fly alone to Thailand. I had two friends in high school, the smartest girls I knew, Jessica and Maricela. They walked into class talking about going to Thailand that summer to study marine biology. I was like “Awesome, sign me up!” That day I told my parents about it, probably begged them, until they finally gave in and agreed. The first few nights sleeping in Thailand I thought, “How the hell did my parents let me travel half way around the world?” I now know, it was the best gift they could have ever given me. The greatest lesson I learned on that trip was to be really appreciative of everything I have. It opened my eyes to see how different everything is, how other people live, and how much more there is to see then just home. What has been the best part of this traveling experience? I would have to say meeting and building friendships with people from all around the world. They are just as passionate about traveling as I am and with a different

perspective on life. It is not about the materialistic things, or boasting about where you have been, but about the memories you have made, and the lifestyles you have experienced. That is the real gift about traveling, opening your mind to new things and being able to appreciate life so much more. What is your dream job and how does this relate to what you’re currently doing? Well, one of my dream jobs is to be an international buyer. A buyer who travels across countries scoping out the latest trends. Or even a trend forecaster, people who work in this secret society who travel the world to create new trends. I plan to open up a clothing store and bring different types of brands from all around the world to my shop. What advice do you have for millennials who are content with existing rather than living life to the full extent? Go out there and live. There is so much in the world to see. But traveling is not for everyone. If you like to travel lavishly, stay at five star hotels, eat at boutique restaurants, then you will never get the true experience of traveling to a different country. You are just staying in your comfort zone and reliving how you would live at home, but in a different scene. Traveling is about meeting new people, exploring different cultures, and seeing what the world is like on the other side. Stay in a hostel, eat the street food, go to the local bars. Trust me it’s not as scary as it sounds. If you see me back at home, you might think I’m just another materialistic girl. I was always the black sheep at all of my jobs, never really fitting in with the girls I worked with, but I knew I had so much more to live for than just being excited about Gucci’s Spring 2016

collection. That is what made me work so much harder, because I knew I had more to offer. Any last advice you would like to share? My professor once told me, “The most successful people in the world, are the ones that have taken the bigger risks.” I share this motto with everyone. You win some, you might lose some, but the bigger the risks, the bigger the gain. I have been living by that motto since 2013 and I have had some of my best years in life since then.
