You’re likely to see a blue heron nestled among the marsh reeds, hear the piercing cries of bickering seagulls overhead, smell the stingy salt air and witness an angler pull in a striper all while you are bicycling on the Eastern Trail that cuts through the center of the Scarborough Marsh. It is one of the most stimulating and sensual bicycling experiences in Maine. “We think it is a unique experience that one can encounter while on the most popular and visible section

south coastal Striper Fishing in Maine Creates Excitement by Cathy Genthner

S

alt water fishing guide Dave Pecci has been fishing the tidal waters of the Kennebec River and the midcoast of Maine for over 50 years. Pecci grew up in Bath and caught his first striped bass from the Kennebec when he was eleven years old. It is still a thrill for him to catch stripers today. “Striped bass are a magical fish. They are good fighters and can be somewhat unpredictable. The attraction also comes from their habits of holding in to strong current and around structure. To catch them consistently you need to know their habitat. Fishing for them is as much of a hunt as it is angling,” said Pecci, who is a licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain and the owner of Obsession Sportfishing Charters in Bath.Striper fishing is big business in Maine bringing in $48 million a year with roughly 100,000 salt water anglers hitting the waters. Stripers are migratory and come out of Chesapeake Bay, migrating up the eastern seaboard and arrive in the cold ocean waters of Maine in late spring and early summer. Stripers can be caught off the coast in a boat or by surf casting and in tidal waters, where rivers flow into the sea.

“Last year, we had some fish settle into the Kennebec and were able to get clients on fish,” said Pecci. “I’ve had many memorable striper trips during my 20 years of guiding. south coastal Portland Schooner Company has been making memories for Casco Bay visitors since 2002. Owned and operated by husband and wife team Scott Reischmann and Michelle Thresher, they offer an authentic, Old World sailing experience from May through October aboard Portland’s only historic windjammers. Whether you’re looking to experience the Portland waterfront from a unique perspective or just hoping to step back to a simpler time for a couple hours, Portland Schooner Company offers an experience you don’t want to miss. The adventure begins aboard one of their classic wooden schooners, Wendameen or Bagheera. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, both schooners were designed by famed naval architect John G. Alden in the early 1900s and built by some of the best craftsmen in the world at the shipyards of East Boothbay Maine. Twohour sails depart from the Maine State Pier in Portland’s Old Port and are offered four times daily, presenting visitors with a perfect vantage point for viewing Portland’s unforgettable sights and sounds – from lighthouses and seabirds to seals and the rocky coastline. The friendly, professional crew is not only there to provide you with a safe trip … they’re happy to share a bit of Casco Bay history and trivia. You’re invited to join in any way you’d like: hoisting the sails alongside a deckhand, taking a turn at the ship’s wheel, or just relaxing and enjoying the ocean breeze and salt air. And you’re welcome to bring food and drink, including beer and wine, aboard. The cost for a two-hour sail is just $35 for adults and $10 for children. Though not required, reservations are strongly encouraged. If you’ve got more time to spend on Casco Bay, Portland Schooner Company also offers charters for family or corporate functions, lunchtime lobster bakes on scenic Cow Island, and overnight excursions where you can spend an evening nestled in a quiet island anchorage. u

radbury Mountain has rapidly gained recognition as Maine’s premier state park for mountain biking! The beauty of the forested trails combined with therolling topography and a proximity to a large population, has created a huge buzz amongst the biking community. This park has become a destination point for all levels of bikers, whether they are looking to teach their children what the sport is all about on our double track trails, or are trying to refine and challenge their own skills on our single track trails and skinny bridges. Our 20 miles of shared use trails are mostly maintained by our strong cadre of volunteers. Various mountain bike events are hosted throughout the season. u

Once you take your first step through the gift shop’s front door, however, your doubts will vanish as you enter the vast and sandy Desert of Maine. The owners welcome you to a very unusual experience and they will do everything they can to make your visit a pleasant and informative one. In 1797 the Tuttle family moved to the 300 acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land— clearing and overgrazing resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to it’s destiny. u

Standup paddleboarding, or SUP, is the new way to experience Maine’s lakes, rivers and beaches. Beginning in Hawaii about a dozen years ago, SUP has now become the fastest growing water sport in the world. In 10 minutes, anyone can learn to stand on a board and use a paddle to maneuver themselves. But that’s only the beginning. There are many different aspects of SUP a paddle boarder can explore, from surfing overhead waves to fly-fishing in the tidal marshes, taking SUP yoga classes or running whitewater rapids, or even just casual, soul-soothing glides on the local pond. This is a sport that grows with your ability, with an almost infinite horizon of possibilities. Make this summer special by doing something completely new. There are a number of paddle sports shops in Maine that now offer rentals and/or lessons in SUP. If you are in the Portland area, Soposup, New England’s 1st store dedicated entirely to SUP, offers free demos on Friday mornings, as well as rentals and private lessons. u Windsurfing: Dance with the Wind With 1400+ miles of coastline complimenting her 5000 lakes and ponds, Maine has quite a bit to offer in the realm of Wind and Water sports. Windsurfing fits nicely into Maine’s menu of outdoor/water activities for the extreme sports enthusiast as well as the casual adventurer. Yes, you heard me right, “casual”. You do not need to be a gifted athlete to windsurf. You can relax or extreme, Green trails or Black Diamond ... your choice Windsurfing equipment has changed drastically over the last 15 years than even more than Kayak equipment. The SOT (sit on top) Kayak design brought kayaking to the casual user. As demand would have it, Wide-Style Boards and lighter sail components have brought windsurfing to people of all ages, sizes, and abilities. “Our first-day students windsurf confidently within 4 hours” offers Ian Barclay of Windsurfing-Maine. “ We have about 30% of our first day students who never even get their hair wet !!” he adds enthusiastically. “Compared to the physically challenging time I had learning 20+ years ago on (then already) antiquated gear, today folks learn techniques on day one that I didn’t learn in the first 5 years.” u

Digging for underground treasure in the foothills of Maine is a thrill for the whole family!

MAINE MINERALOGY EXPEDITIONS, (MME) www.rocksme.biz We are the premier attraction in the greater Bethel area for rockhounds of all experience levels. Our main attraction is a four-hour guided tour of the famous Bumpus Mine where some of the world’s largest beryl crystals were found at the Bumpus in the late 1920’s. They were over twenty feet long and weighed many tons. Visitors (5 yrs and older) are treated to a basic introduction to local geology and mineralogy and a guided tour of two of the only mine tunnels in the area still permitting public access. Finally, visitors have an opportunity to dig in the mine tailings in search of mineral specimens including, feldspar, rose quartz, milky and smoky quartz, black tourmaline and beryl. It’s a great outdoor experience for history buffs, nature lovers, students and scouting groups who often take the tour to qualify for various academic and merit badge requirements. Visitors gather at BETHEL OUTDOOR ADVENTURES, (BOA) before noon departure for the Bumpus Mine in their own vehicles. Safety requirements must be obeyed at all times and visitors must be equipped with sturdy shoes, repellent, and their own comfort items. MME provides hard hats, lights, collection buckets, and 36

hand tools. While the site is considered “easy access”, tunnels are not wheel chair accessible. The mine is remote, with the only “improvements” being the access road and a maintained Porta-Jon, pretty much the same as it was when mining operations ceased in the 1960’s. Take a look at our web site, (www.rocksme.biz) for pictures and comments from our guest experiences! Along with MME, two closely affiliated businesses provide a great menu of experiences that will make your visit to our area a truly memorable one. First, to compliment the experience with gems and native minerals is MT MANN JEWELERS. Owner, hard rock miner, gem cutter and jewelry designer Jim Mann has created an educational and eye-popping exposition that is sure to impress the whole family. He provides a fantastic display of native and worldwide mineral specimens in his Museum and the Crystal Cave. Jim completes the experience with local gems set in fine jewelry with a major wow factor. The knowledgeable staff at Mt Mann is well equipped to answer your questions. BETHEL OUTDOOR ADVENTURES & CAMPGROUND, (BOA) is “home base” for MME and www.activitymaine.com

western lakes & mountains miles of the trail are recently constructed. Traversing nine mountain summits and seven primitive campsites, the route offers unique backcountry experiences. Approximately one-half of the trail is on private land and the rest on public land managed by Maine’s Bureau of Parks and Lands. Construction of the trail has involved hundreds of volunteers and the dedication of the several organizations and individuals who comprise the Grafton Loop Trail Coalition. These include the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, the Appalachian Mountain Club, Maine Conservation Corps, Outward Bound Wilderness, Maine BPL, Creative Conservation LLC, Caribou Recreation Development LLC, and some key landowners. The group’s mission is to develop multi-day hiking opportunities as alternatives to heavily used sections of the Appalachian Trail. The spectacular location of the trail is the result of a cooperative effort among landowners, nonprofit organizations, interested community members, and the State of Maine. Funding for trail design and construction came from Fields Pond Foundation, members of the Grafton Loop Trail coalition, Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, Maine Recreation Trails Program, Hauben Foundation, Betterment Fund, Maine Community Foundation and the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund. u

My Creed by Margaret Chase Smith “My creed is that public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. If you’re in the mood for disc golf, you don’t need to look very far!

L

ooking for a great activity to do with friends, family, or just get away for a few hours?

The answer is Disc Golfing, which started in CA over 30 years ago, and is now worldwide! One of the first ten official disc golf courses in the world was built in Maine shortly after the sport was officially formalized in 1975. It is the fastest growing sport Enman Field in the state. Courses are located in every corner of Maine, which now boasts 36 courses and rapidly counting! The average cost is $5 for a round or $810 for the day. Some are in heavily wooded areas others are in open fields. Finn Brook Disc Golf in Whitefield features all of the above plus baskets on the beautiful Sheepscot River. Some are 9 holes, most are 18, and some have 1-3 courses on the property. Most have rentals available, and some have discs for sale. Disc golfing is a sport for all ages and abilities. It is very common to see multi-generations of families out enjoying themselves, and the wildlife on the courses. 56

Activities Guide of Maine | summer 2011

Most courses have people available to get you started with impromptu lessons for those new to the sport, but the players who play this sport are some of the most incredible people and are always willing share their knowledge and skills. Many of the courses have leagues and tournaments throughout the summer and would love to have you join in. Woodland Valley Disc Golf in Limerick is presently constructing their 3rd and most challenging course yet, and would love to have you stop by for a round. Dragon Disc Golf Championships held in early June, and boasts former World and National champions

“One of the first ten official disc golf courses in the world was built in Maine shortly after the sport was officially formalized in 1975” amongst its former winners. Their beginner events, known as Greenhorn tournaments and traditionally held in late July and early August. New to the schedule this year is another large scale PDGA-sanctioned event being put together in conjunction with the Baxter Brewing company of Lewiston. Disc golf is a fun activity for folks of all ages. It’s also a year round activity. A number of courses stay open year round, clearing and grooming the snow for easier play. So get out there and try the great sport of disc golf, you’ll be glad you did! u www.activitymaine.com

arther north along Coastal Route One is the historic shipbuilding city of Bath, fondly known as the “City of Ships”. From its heyday as a shipbuilding center during the age of sail to the modern day Navy vessels built with pride at the Bath Iron Works, Bath has earned this title. The soul of Bath is in its shipbuilding heritage, past and present, and the city thrives on the balance of industry with arts and cultural life, clearly visible in the distinctive red and white crane of the Bath Iron Works overlooking the restored Victorian buildings of the downtown district. This balance is one of the reasons downtown’s Front Street was recognized as one of the nation’s top ten downtown stretches, earning a prestigious designation from the American Planning Association as one of 2009 “Great Streets”.

Strolling under the trailing flower baskets and shade trees on Bath’s Front and Centre Streets, you’ll see signs everywhere of the bustling mid- to late-19th century shipping port Bath once was...from the stately Customs House to the “archway” that now connects Front Street to municipal parking, where sailors once rolled barrels from the warehouses to the docks. The wide brick sidewalks and pedestrian friendly oneway streets are a great place for exploring the downtown’s lively mix of shops, galleries and restaurants. With the local pharmacy, grocery, and pubs lined up shoulder to shoulder with upscale bistros, boutiques, antique stores and vintage clothing shops, Bath provides a shopping and dining experience that is a little bit funky, a little bit classic and very cool. The National Trust cited Bath as “an old seafaring town that has reinvented itself as one of the best small cities in America”. Lodging in one of Bath’s gracious inns is the perfect base for those seeking to experience life along the Kennebec

nown as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the Customs House (1870). If you didn’t get to see Wiscasset Village’s wonderful sunken garden opposite the NickelsSortwell House—take an extra few minutes and enjoy it’s beauty. u

It’s no wonder, too, that the Gardens had 90,000 visitors in 2010 and expects more in 2011. And it’s no wonder the word heard most often from these visitors is “Wow!” Although kids and families have enjoyed the Gardens since its official opening in 2007, the two-acre Children’s Garden, which opened last summer, caters to the younger set. This amazing garden with features inspired by children’s books gets rave reviews from visitors of all ages. The Sensory Garden, opened since 2009, offers visitors a chance to get in tune with their five senses. Opening in 2011 is the new Education Center - a model of “green” design that will provide space for horticultural and artistic programs and pursuits. The Gardens offers educational programs and special events for all ages, in all seasons. There are fairs and festivals, concerts, dinners by top chefs, and exhibits

There’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. Damariscotta serves as the shopping and financial center for surrounding communities, and is the site of many fine homes. It’s attractive Main Street boasts numerous stores, shops and restaurants. The ChapmanHall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during the countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. Some of the shell heaps run as deep as 30 feet. The Damariscotta Region offers unrivaled opportunities for all. u

ATVmaine There’s no limit to the fun you can have on an ATV in Maine!

Maine Has a Wealth of ATVing Opportunities By Cathy Genthner

M

aine has more miles of ATV trails than almost any other state in the country. There are 6,000 miles of trails that traverse a diverse landscape of woods, mountains, fields, lakes, streams and salt water marshes. “We have the largest variety of trails in terms of geography as well as different types of trails. We have everything from a major gravel road to a remote trail that meanders through some of the western Maine mountains,” said Dan Mitchell, the president of ATV Maine. One of the most beautiful places to ride an ATV is on the newly opened Down East Sunrise Trails, which spans over 85 miles in Hancock and Washington Counties. “It is an incredible ride and the variety of scenery is amazing. You can go from thick forests and it will open up into big bog areas and there are mountains right along the trail as well,” said Joe McPhail, the president of the Dennysville ATV Club. “We’ve seen wildlife including deer, turkeys, partridge, fox and eagles. It isn’t a dead end ride. You can get somewhere.” Getting somewhere is what ATVing is all about. In fact, ATVs can get you to places that are inaccessible by car or too far to travel by foot.

Making summer treats and holiday traditions special For more than a half a century the Hanscom’s have been harvesting wild blueberries from their barrens. In mid-August, both locals and visitors alike flock to the Hanscom Ridge Road, Marshfield, facility to treat themselves to a great downeast summer tradition. In addition to their summer blueberry treats, they pioneered the development of balsam fir holiday products in downeast Maine. Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, centerpieces and other specialty holiday creations are among the natural Maine products that the Hanscoms have shipped to brighten the holiday seasons of thousands of families across America. Early November sees the beginning of the process of harvesting the finest tip ends of the balsam fir branches. The freezing nights in downeast Maine at this time of year are the perfect ingredient to slow down sap flow, allowing the needles to form a strong bond with the branches. Next comes the creative process. In the midst of the glorious fragrance of the newly cut balsam fir, creative artists at Flo’s Wreaths put their talents into the development of each holiday product. Their special storage methods assure that the fresh smell of the Maine woods lasts for months. During November and early December, they ship their creative holiday products daily to thousands of retail customers across the country. u www.activitymaine.com

Eastport’s Old Stone Mustard Mill Museum Raye’s Mustard Mill is a working museum located on Washington Street in Eastport (America’s eastern-most city), approximately eight miles down Route 190 from its intersection with Route 1 in Perry. The quaint and authentic mill is North America’s only working traditional stone ground mustard mill. At the turn of the 20th century, J. Wesley Raye started the mill to produce mustard for Maine’s burgeoning sardine industry. In the early 1900s, the small city of Eastport had more than 20 sardine canneries. Later in the century, when the sardine industry declined, Raye’s Mustard Mill became known for its award-winning gourmet and specialty mustards. This downeast institution has remained in the Raye family for over a century. Currently owned by Kevin and Karen Raye, this family run business remains committed to continuing the traditions of previous generations while focusing on expanding its national presence in the marketplace. u

Sarah Graves Mystery Series: A Home Repair is Homicide

The past is alive and well in Eastport In 1818, when America was a young nation, led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. At the time both the whaling and shipbuilding industries were booming. His entrepreneurship was exactly perfect for the time and he knew that he could meet all his customers needs by supplying hardware, harpoons, deadeyes, canvas, alcohol, and tobacco and everything else required for rigging, operating and provisioning a ship. While the original business site suffered through several fires and storms the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976 completely devastated the facility. u 57 Washington Street, P.O. Box 58 Eastport, ME 04631

O

n January 22, 1964, The Roosevelt International Park was established by agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20,1964, the first ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Back by popular demand are complimentary outside walking tours of the estate and on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology (staff and weather permitting). The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. ADT. The park’s visitor center will remain open through October 31 to accommodate fall visitors. The visitors center offers interpretive displays, a short introductory video and a selection of memorabilia items. u

Come Celebrate and Enjoy the Spectacular Katahdin Region

In the spiritual traditions of the Penobscot Indian people, Mt. Katahdin is so sacred that it would be sacrilegious for one of them to climb to the top of the mountain. They believe that the highest god in their spiritual system, Glukab sent the lower angry god, Pamola to Pamola Peak for eternity because of his bad behavior. This legendary region captures the minds and hearts of visitors each year. Once you visit, you’ll want to return. The Katahin Region consists of the towns of Medway, East Millinocket, Millinocket, Patten and Sherman. In addition to excellent accommodations, fine dining and entertainment there is the Ambejejus Boom House on Ambejejus Lake which displays an excellent selection of driving memorabilia and the Millinocket Historical Society Museum which displays many aspects of the area’s unique history. Recreational opportunities abound from hiking in Baxter State Park to white water rafting on the Penobscot River or fly fishing on one of the region’s many remote ponds and streams. A camera is an essential item to preserve your adventure. u

His huge catch beats the old Moosehead Lake record set in 1961 of a 28 pound 12 ounce togue. The area’s large, pristine forests provide excellent cover for deer, bear and small game and make it an outstanding hunting region.
