You’re likely to see a blue heron nestled among the marsh reeds, hear the piercing cries of bickering seagulls overhead, smell the stingy salt air and witness an angler pull in a striper all while you are bicycling on the Eastern Trail that cuts through the center of the Scarborough Marsh. It is one of the most stimulating and sensual bicycling experiences in Maine. “We think it is a unique experience that one can encounter while on the most popular and visible section

This combo tour is a great way to maximize your day in Portland. For just $35, you’ll get a 90-minute Trolley Tour and a 90-minute Lighthouse Lovers Cruise on Casco Bay. The 2011 season begins May 14th and will continue right through the end of October. In July & August trolley tours run at 9:30, 11:15, 1:00, 2:45, and 4:30. This adventure includes a narrated cruise through beautiful Casco Bay, plus an opportunity to explore Eagle Island. While en route to the island, you’ll cruise through scenic back channels and quiet coves, past island cottages and quaint fishing villages. On the island you will have an opportunity to tour the former summer estate of famed arctic explorer, Admiral Robert E. Peary, the 1st man to reach the North Pole. u

S
alt water fishing guide Dave Pecci has been fishing the tidal waters of the Kennebec River and the midcoast of Maine for over 50 years. Pecci grew up in Bath and caught his first striped bass from the Kennebec when he was eleven years old. It is still a thrill for him to catch stripers today. “Striped bass are a magical fish. They are good fighters and can be somewhat unpredictable. The attraction also comes from their habits of holding in to strong current and around structure. To catch them consistently you need to know their habitat. Fishing for them is as much of a hunt as it is angling,” said Pecci, who is a licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain and the owner of Obsession Sportfishing Charters in Bath.Striper fishing is big business in Maine bringing in $48 million a year with roughly 100,000 salt water anglers hitting the waters. Stripers are migratory and come out of Chesapeake Bay, migrating up the eastern seaboard and arrive in the cold ocean waters of Maine in late spring and early summer. Stripers can be caught off the coast in a boat or by surf casting and in tidal waters, where rivers flow into the sea.

If you are spending time in Central Maine and want to know where to ride, check out the Maine Cycling Club, based in Auburn, Maine. The club boasts over 150 members of all ability levels. They are a group of recreational riders who get together regularly for road biking. New riders are always welcome to join the fun. Road bikes are recommended but not absolutely necessary. Once you take your first step through the gift shop’s front door, however, your doubts will vanish as you enter the vast and sandy Desert of Maine. In 1797 the Tuttle family moved to the 300 acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Standup paddleboarding, or SUP, is the new way to experience Maine’s lakes, rivers and beaches. Beginning in Hawaii about a dozen years ago, SUP has now become the fastest growing water sport in the world. In 10 minutes, anyone can learn to stand on a board and use a paddle to maneuver themselves. But that’s only the beginning. There are many different aspects of SUP a paddle boarder can explore, from surfing overhead waves to fly-fishing in the tidal marshes, taking SUP yoga classes or running whitewater rapids, or even just casual, soul-soothing glides on the local pond. This is a sport that grows with your ability, with an almost infinite horizon of possibilities. Make this summer special by doing something completely new. Brew Fest! Maine Lakes Brew Fest 2010 was an absolute perfect fall day all around. With tons of sun, blue bird skies and some of the best Maine micro brews poured for you by the brewers themselves on the shores of Sebago Lake. The line to get in at 10:30 am was building with brewfest goers who donned their best beer shirts, hats and regalia and I was armed with a beer glass a note pad and camera thinking to myself I could possibly have the best job in the world right now. As you walk through the myriad of Maine beer vendors sampling tasty beer after tasty beer you hear brewers talk amongst themselves about their batches. I overheard a few

Digging for underground treasure in the foothills of Maine is a thrill for the whole family!
MAINE MINERALOGY EXPEDITIONS, (MME) www.rocksme.biz We are the premier attraction in the greater Bethel area for rockhounds of all experience levels. Our main attraction is a four-hour guided tour of the famous Bumpus Mine where some of the world’s largest beryl crystals were found at the Bumpus in the late 1920’s. They were over twenty feet long and weighed many tons. Visitors (5 yrs and older) are treated to a basic introduction to local geology and mineralogy and a guided tour of two of the only mine tunnels in the area still permitting public access. Finally, visitors have an opportunity to dig in the mine tailings in search of mineral specimens including, feldspar, rose quartz, milky and smoky quartz, black tourmaline and beryl. It’s a great outdoor experience for history buffs, nature lovers, students and scouting groups who often take the tour to qualify for various academic and merit badge requirements. Visitors gather at BETHEL OUTDOOR ADVENTURES, (BOA) before noon departure for the Bumpus Mine in their own vehicles. Safety requirements must be obeyed at all times and visitors must be equipped with sturdy shoes, repellent, and their own comfort items. MME provides hard hats, lights, collection buckets, and 36

hand tools. While the site is considered “easy access”, tunnels are not wheel chair accessible. The mine is remote, with the only “improvements” being the access road and a maintained Porta-Jon, pretty much the same as it was when mining operations ceased in the 1960’s. western lakes & mountains miles of the trail are recently constructed. Traversing nine mountain summits and seven primitive campsites, the route offers unique backcountry experiences. Approximately one-half of the trail is on private land and the rest on public land managed by Maine’s Bureau of Parks and Lands. Construction of the trail has involved hundreds of volunteers and the dedication of the several organizations and individuals who comprise the Grafton Loop Trail Coalition. These include the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, the Appalachian Mountain Club, Maine Conservation Corps, Outward Bound Wilderness, Maine BPL, Creative Conservation LLC, Caribou Recreation Development LLC, and some key landowners. The group’s mission is to develop multi-day hiking opportunities as alternatives to heavily used sections of the Appalachian Trail. The spectacular location of the trail is the result of a cooperative effort among landowners, nonprofit organizations, interested community members, and the State of Maine. Funding for trail design and construction came from Fields Pond Foundation, members of the Grafton Loop Trail coalition, Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, Maine Recreation Trails Program, Hauben Foundation, Betterment Fund, Maine Community Foundation and the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund. u

If you’re in the mood for disc golf, you don’t need to look very far!
L
ooking for a great activity to do with friends, family, or just get away for a few hours?
The answer is Disc Golfing, which started in CA over 30 years ago, and is now worldwide! One of the first ten official disc golf courses in the world was built in Maine shortly after the sport was officially formalized in 1975. It is the fastest growing sport Enman Field in the state. Courses are located in every corner of Maine, which now boasts 36 courses and rapidly counting! The average cost is $5 for a round or $810 for the day. Some are in heavily wooded areas others are in open fields. Finn Brook Disc Golf in Whitefield features all of the above plus baskets on the beautiful Sheepscot River. Some are 9 holes, most are 18, and some have 1-3 courses on the property. Most have rentals available, and some have discs for sale. Disc golfing is a sport for all ages and abilities. It is very common to see multi-generations of families out enjoying themselves, and the wildlife on the courses. 56

Most courses have people available to get you started with impromptu lessons for those new to the sport, but the players who play this sport are some of the most incredible people and are always willing share their knowledge and skills. Many of the courses have leagues and tournaments throughout the summer and would love to have you join in. Woodland Valley Disc Golf in Limerick is presently constructing their 3rd and most challenging course yet, and would love to have you stop by for a round. Dragon Disc Golf Championships held in early June, and boasts former World and National champions

arther north along Coastal Route One is the historic shipbuilding city of Bath, fondly known as the “City of Ships”. From its heyday as a shipbuilding center during the age of sail to the modern day Navy vessels built with pride at the Bath Iron Works, Bath has earned this title. The soul of Bath is in its shipbuilding heritage, past and present, and the city thrives on the balance of industry with arts and cultural life, clearly visible in the distinctive red and white crane of the Bath Iron Works overlooking the restored Victorian buildings of the downtown district. This balance is one of the reasons downtown’s Front Street was recognized as one of the nation’s top ten downtown stretches, earning a prestigious designation from the American Planning Association as one of 2009 “Great Streets”.

at the pace of yesteryear. Bath’s tree-lined streets form an outdoor gallery of humble and grand examples of classic American architecture. The City of Bath website and Sagadahoc Preservation Inc. offer audio or printed tours of these historic homes. Bath is also home to the popular Chocolate Church Arts Center where nationally and internationally recognized musicians play throughout the year on the main-stage, and the gallery exhibits some of mid-coast Maine’s finest artists. The Maine Maritime Museum on the grounds of the historic Percy and Small Shipyard also has fine examples of maritime art, along with regularly changing exhibits on ships and shipbuilding, and interactive installations for children. nown as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the Customs House (1870). If you didn’t get to see Wiscasset Village’s wonderful sunken garden opposite the NickelsSortwell House—take an extra few minutes and enjoy it’s beauty. u

boothbay harbor Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens A Wonder-full Garden for All Ages in All Seasons Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is a natural wonder, but it’s no wonder at all that the 250-acre shorefront Gardens has been hailed as one of Maine’s top attractions. It’s no wonder, too, that the Gardens had 90,000 visitors in 2010 and expects more in 2011. And it’s no wonder the word heard most often from these visitors is “Wow!” Although kids and families have enjoyed the Gardens since its official opening in 2007, the two-acre Children’s Garden, which opened last summer, caters to the younger set. There’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. The ChapmanHall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during the countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. M
aine has more miles of ATV trails than almost any other state in the country. There are 6,000 miles of trails that traverse a diverse landscape of woods, mountains, fields, lakes, streams and salt water marshes. “We have the largest variety of trails in terms of geography as well as different types of trails. We have everything from a major gravel road to a remote trail that meanders through some of the western Maine mountains,” said Dan Mitchell, the president of ATV Maine. One of the most beautiful places to ride an ATV is on the newly opened Down East Sunrise Trails, which spans over 85 miles in Hancock and Washington Counties. “It is an incredible ride and the variety of scenery is amazing. You can go from thick forests and it will open up into big bog areas and there are mountains right along the trail as well,” said Joe McPhail, the president of the Dennysville ATV Club. “We’ve seen wildlife including deer, turkeys, partridge, fox and eagles. It isn’t a dead end ride. You can get somewhere.” Getting somewhere is what ATVing is all about. In fact, ATVs can get you to places that are inaccessible by car or too far to travel by foot.

Eastport’s Old Stone Mustard Mill Museum Raye’s Mustard Mill is a working museum located on Washington Street in Eastport (America’s eastern-most city), approximately eight miles down Route 190 from its intersection with Route 1 in Perry. The quaint and authentic mill is North America’s only working traditional stone ground mustard mill. At the turn of the 20th century, J. Wesley Raye started the mill to produce mustard for Maine’s burgeoning sardine industry. In the early 1900s, the small city of Eastport had more than 20 sardine canneries. Later in the century, when the sardine industry declined, Raye’s Mustard Mill became known for its award-winning gourmet and specialty mustards. This downeast institution has remained in the Raye family for over a century. Currently owned by Kevin and Karen Raye, this family run business remains committed to continuing the traditions of previous generations while focusing on expanding its national presence in the marketplace. u

n January 22, 1964, The Roosevelt International Park was established by agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20,1964, the first ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Back by popular demand are complimentary outside walking tours of the estate and on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology (staff and weather permitting). The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. ADT. The park’s visitor center will remain open through October 31 to accommodate fall visitors. The visitors center offers interpretive displays, a short introductory video and a selection of memorabilia items. u

the highlands avid bird watcher you are bound to see on a quiet walk such common species as the bald eagle, red-winged blackbirds, great blue herons, hawks, owls, ducks and loons. The moose is our local celebrity and can be encountered throughout our area.
