Maine’s Eastern Trail Offers Free Exploring and Adventure By Cathy Genthner
T
he 65-mile long Eastern Trail extends from the Piscatqua River in Kittery to Bug Light in South Portland on Casco Bay and includes eight lighthouses along the way. The Eastern Trail (ET) is part of the 3,000 mile long East Coast Greenway that stretches from Key West, Florida to Calais, Maine. It is open to all kinds of recreational use, such as biking, hiking, bird watching, photography and even fishing along some spots. It consists of urban, remote, and suburban sections winding through the woods, along rivers and marshes, as well through towns and cities. However, less than three miles of the trail takes you on urban streets. “The thing we hear the most from people who have used the trail is that when they are on the trail they are able to get away from the noise of being on the road, whether they are walking, bicycling or doing any number of things in a beautiful natural setting,” said Bob Hamblen, the president of the Eastern Trail Alliance. “When you are on the trail, all you are hearing is the wind in the trees.” That is because non-motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trail, which makes it a great way to experience the incredible landscape of Maine. Bird watching is a popular activity and

Summer visitors to the Portland area who fish, should consider themselves lucky. Not only are you visiting a city that’s clean, friendly and has great food and attractions, but you’re visiting a city that has endless fishing opportunities as well. Striped Bass are the main attraction from mid-May thru October. Fish from 15-45 inches can be caught minutes from downtown. The Presumpscot River has several access points: Allen Ave, Route 9 and Martins Point being just a few. Fort Williams, Two Lights and Kettle Cove are all in Cape Elizabeth and not only offer good fishing, but a good look at the rugged Maine coast . About 20 minutes from downtown are: Higgins, Old Orchard and Ferry Beaches. All offer surf casting for those that prefer standing on a sandy beach casting into the waves. One of the best parts for a visitor who has a busy family schedules, is that much of the local fishing can be safely done at night or early in the morning when everyone else is asleep. If you’re visiting one of Casco Bay’s 365 islands: Cliff, Peaks, Long and Chebeague Islands being some of the more popular, then all you need to do is find some access to the shore and you can catch stripers. hen we hike, paddle, hit the mountain biking trails or even chuck the frisbee with our friends we breathe. When we are so comfortable with our breath that it becomes an integral part of our performance we excel. The more we focus on our breath the better our performance will be: Longer strides without a break, summit quicker (celebrate quicker), hit the currents harder with more clarity, reacting to the structure on the trail like you knew they were there, catching the frisbee with such finess its like second nature, these are all bi-products of breath practice, and meditation. Some people use herb(s), some supplements, and others energy drinks. Try using meditation

Enjoy! : ) • First is posture. Whether you are lying down, sitting crosslegged or on your knees, visualize your spine like a tower of golden coins with relaxation everywhere in your body. If you are sitting up imagine your head is on a string connected to the stars. • Next focus all your attention on your breath. Breathe into an area about 3 inches below your belly button. (For centering, anger management and focus, this is a great area to put your breath.) Visualize a paper bag in this area and fill the bag up with fresh, oxygenated rich air and life force. Now breathe into this special pace, known in China as the “internal elixir field” or the Dan Tien and exhale. • Stay calm, make sure to scan the body for any tension and return to breath. You are now trying just to focus on your breath and staying calm with no thoughts. If a thought comes in exhale it and return to pure stillness. • If it helps to count your inhale and exhale so as to not get lost in “10,000 thoughts” do it. Try counting for a 5 count and hold for a 5 count, then exhale for 5 then hold for 5 repeating the process until its time to go anywhere from 2 minutes and beyond is good. Enjoy! Give yourself this time of rejuvenation, reconnection, health and wellness. It will be a little tough at the start with all the distractions the mind brings but stick to it. radbury Mountain has rapidly gained recognition as Maine’s premier state park for mountain biking! The beauty of the forested trails combined with the rolling topography and a proximity to a large population, has created a huge buzz amongst the biking community. This park has become a destination point for all levels of bikers, whether they are looking to teach their children what the sport is all about on our double track trails, or are trying to refine and challenge their own skills on our single track trails and skinny bridges. freeport Visitors find it difficult to imagine among the rolling hills and rambling brooks at the end of Desert Road there is a desert. Once you take your first step through the gift shop’s front door, however, your doubts will vanish as you enter the vast and sandy Desert of Maine. The owners welcome you to a very unusual experience and they will do everything they can to make your visit a pleasant and informative one. In 1797 the Tuttle family moved to the 300 acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to it’s destiny. u

Here are some of your choices for short-term enjoyment of horses in Maine. Hourly Rentals: You can enjoy Maine woods, mountain views and wildlife aboard a pleasant horse for an hour or two. This service is generally for beginners through advanced riders and offers an opportunity to hop on board without the structure of a lesson. Day Camps: If you’re looking for something your children can do for a week check out your local stables’ summer camp programs. Many offer full-day or half-day camps where your kids can learn grooming, tacking and riding as well as many skills needed to own their own horse.

There are many clubs in Maine including saddle clubs that offer full day horse shows, clinics that you can participate in, team penning, and even horse-drawn farm equipment demonstrations. Our local fairs are a great way to see many horse events and to go on a pony ride as well. Horse-drawn vehicles: Looking for a quiet or informative way to explore Maine’s finest towns? Carriage rides through Old Orchard Beach, Kennebunkport, Portland, Acadia National Park or Freeport are offered regularly and often include a history tour of each area. Wagon rides to an ice cream shop or at a county fair are a great way to enjoy horses with your whole family! Bring your own horse: There are many facilities that will let you bring your horse for the summer or just for a day or two. Celebrating 20 years of flight in 2012, the 20th Annual Great Falls Balloon Festival will be held August 17-19, on the riverfront in Lewiston/Auburn, Maine. The festival is the premier summer event of central Maine and is a destination for many visitors to the state. Established in 1992 by a small group of business people, civic leaders and friends, the festival’s goal is to provide fundraising opportunities to local nonprofit groups while celebrating the community. In 2011, 34 groups raised over $160,000 to fund local schools and public services.

The Androscoggin River—with the rocky Great Falls as its backdrop—provides a picturesque setting for the dozens of balloons which visit annually, including some special shape balloons. MAINE MINERALOGY EXPEDITIONS, (MME) www.rocksme.biz Our main attraction is a four-hour guided tour of the famous Bumpus Mine where some of the world’s largest beryl crystals were found at the Bumpus in the late 1920’s. They were over twenty feet long and weighed many tons. Visitors (5 yrs and older) are treated to a basic introduction to local geology and mineralogy and a guided tour of two of the only mine tunnels in the area still permitting public access. Finally, visitors have an opportunity to dig in the mine tailings in search of mineral specimens including, feldspar, rose quartz, milky and smoky quartz, black tourmaline and beryl. Bethel, Maine Has the Blues – Blue Mountains, That is
W
hen it comes to mountains, Vermont has the Greens, New Hampshire has the Whites, and Maine has the Blues. The Blues, better known as the Longfellow Range after Maine’s most famous poet, extend northeast from Bethel to 5,268 foot Mt. Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The section of the Blues from the Androscoggin River to the Bear River in Grafton Notch is called the Mahoosucs, likely an anglicized Abenaki Indian term for “land that is hard to hunt in” or “abode of hungry animals.” Some historians believe the term means pinnacle or mountain peak. Since the 1870’s, travelers have visited the Bethel area to hike the peaks and neighboring foothills, breathe the clean mountain air, spark their creative spirits, and cure their blues. Not to be overshadowed by the more publicized and well-known Presidential Range and White Mountains, the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce is reaching out to visitors of all ages and abilities to hike, walk, and backpack the variety of trails found in the western Maine region. There are over two dozen day hikes in the area including the Mt. Will Trail, Step Falls Nature Preserve, Table Rock Trail, and Wright Trail leading up Goose Eye Mountain. The Grafton Loop Trail provides a three-night backpacking trip for the adventuresome. In town, the Bethel Pathway along the Androscoggin River, Paradise Road, and self-guided walking

tours of the town’s historic district satisfy the casual, exercise walker. Recently rebuilt, Table Rock Trail is a favorite with families. The 2.4 mile loop follows the Appalachian Trail’s white blaze to the blue-blazed trail. It rises gradually to a height of 900 feet above the trail head. (You may also take a right on the orangeblazed trail to ascend steeply. Children prefer this. Minor caves and clambering are fun.) From aptly named “Table Rock,” the vista includes 4, 180’ Old Speck Mountain, the third highest mountain in Maine. Step Falls near Grafton Notch was the Nature Conservancy’s first preserve in Maine. The 24 acre preserve trail follows Wright Brook, a braided stream of steeply cascading pools dropping over 250 feet – making this one of Maine’s highest waterfalls. This is an ideal hike for nature photographers. The Mt. Will Trail, developed by the Bethel Conservation Commission, climbs 730 feet through the Bethel Town Forest. The North Ledges Section is highlighted by a descriptive nature trail, followed by a hike to south facing ledges that afford views of the Androscoggin valley and Bethel village. The final rocky descent completes the 3.25 mile loop. The Wright Trail is a full day’s loop hike up to the 3860 foot summit of Goose Eye Mountain. This trail is part of the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands’ Mahoosuc Unit. For its hiking visitors, Bethel offers a variety of lodging from restored bed & breakfasts, historic inns, to resorts with swimming pools and golf courses, as well as motels and campgrounds. Dining options range from a half dozen pizza places to Chinese, Korean, BBQ, vegetarian, English pub, microbrewery, and fine dining. Day hikers can pick up a pack lunch at the local supermarket or specialty food stores. There is an outdoor outfitter right in town for those in need of hiking, backpacking, and camping gear. The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce office has trails maps for day hikes in the area and the staff will provide direction to the trail heads. You’ll find a trail alongside the main falls that will bring you up the tier and offers opportunities to get into the pools of each tier. Summertime in the Jackman Moose River Region offers something for Everyone By Hal Blood f you want to beat the heat of summer and enjoy a vacation where you can relax and listen to the cry of the loons on a nearby lake, or have an action packed escape in the great outdoors, Jackman is the place for you. The Moose River valley lies at the headwaters of the Kennebec River, and consists of a chain of lakes connected by the Moose River. It is the last stop on Route 201 National Scenic By-way before the Quebec border, 15 miles to the north. This area is not known as a typical “Tourist Trap,” just a quiet friendly place to relax and enjoy life away from the grind of life.

For fisherman, there are countless ponds and streams to wet a line in where native Brook Trout abound. The lakes in the valley hold native Brook Trout, but a fisherman also has the chance to catch Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout, locally known as “Togue.” Whether you prefer to cast a fly on a remote pond, or troll on a lake, the fish are sure to tighten your line. If you are not sure where to go or just want to learn how to fish, contact one of the local guides to set up a trip. If you are into action sports you might want to consider a whitewater rafting trip on the Kennebec River. Windfall Rafting is a local rafting company located right in town. ATVing is becoming one of the more popular adventure sports. The Border Riders Sportsman Club maintains over 300 miles of ATV trails that connect to trails in other areas. These trails will take you through some of the most scenic areas of the State. While on an ATV trip besides the scenery, one might expect to see wildlife 54

including: moose, deer, grouse, rabbits and an occasional bear. If you don’t have an ATV, you can rent them right in town. If you want to get away from everything for a few days, the Moose River “Bow Trip” is a fun 40-mile canoe trip. This trip starts and finishes at Attean Lake and makes a circle around Attean Mountain. There are campsites along the river to relax at after a day of paddling, where you can listen to the crackle of a campfire. There are also miles of hiking trails to the top of the highest mountain peaks. On a clear day, you can see into Canada and also Mount Katahdin. While hiking the right time of the season you can pick raspberries and blueberries beside the trail. Along with the hiking trails, there are also many places to ride a mountain bike. There are many different types of accommodations in the Jackman Moose River Valley. Whether it’s a motel, sporting cabin, or resort, there is a place to stay for everyone. When it’s time to eat, you can buy groceries and do your own cooking, or grab a pizza at one of the local shops. There are also several restaurants in town that serve everything from home cooked meals to fine steaks. If you have been to the Moose River Valley before, it might just be time for a return trip; and if you have never visited the Valley, you owe it to yourself to experience what it has to offer. .u www.activitymaine.com

he midcoast region extends from Brunswick to Searsport on the north and includes eastern Cumberland, all of Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox counties as well as a major section of Waldo County. The rich seafaring heritage of the entire region is very much alive and well and seen in its many bustling harbors and traditional fishing villages. History and cultural activities abound here. Historic forts at Popham, Edgecomb, William Henry and the Colonial Pemaquid Restoration as well as the Pownal and Knox forts and the Civil War Museum that honors Maine Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain in Brunswick are a must see for history buffs. For those with an interest in maritime traditions, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport and the Fishing Museum at Pemaquid Point Light provide wonderful opportunities to discover our seafaring past. In Southern Maine’s Coastal Region, a seven-mile long sandy beach stretches from Old Orchard Beach to Scarborough. The Pier in OOB is famous for its shops, restaurants and entertainment. Area campgrounds are either within easy walking distance to the beach and amusement parks or they offer shuttle service. Old Orchard Beach Campground has large natural sites and a swimming pool. Known as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the Customs House (1870). There’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. Damariscotta serves as the shopping and financial center for surrounding communities, and is the site of many fine homes. It’s attractive Main Street boasts numerous stores, shops and restaurants. The Chapman-Hall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during the countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. enobscot Bay is considered to be one of the world’s best sailing bays. The cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean are home to porpoises, seals, sea birds and other wild life. There are several lighthouses that you can visit from the waterside which is the way to really appreciate their form and function. Here is your opportunity to experience the bay in two unique ways. One is to go lobstering on CAPTAIN JACK, a traditional 30 foot Maine lobster boat operated by Captain Steve Hale. The trip times are 9am, 12pm, 1:30pm, 3:00pm, and 4:30pm. His down east humor and approach to fishing will keep you entertained for the full 1.25-hour adventure. Yes you will be able to assist in the hauling, baiting, and measuring of the lobsters and even try your hand at the wheel. He has been lobstering for 30 years. You will also be able to purchase lobsters for your dinner that night.

The second trip is on a beautiful wooden sailboat operated by Captain Bob. This excellent example of craftsmanship is known as “the prettiest ketch in the schooner fleet.” MORNING IN MAINE is a 55 foot ketch designed by Captain Pete Culler and built by Concordia in 1970. She carries 21 passengers on 2-hour trips each day of the week. As a marine biologist, Bob will offer an additional dimension to the sailing adventure. He is willing to discuss the many facets of the sea and the animals that make the bay their home. Bob taught for many years at the college level and now prefers to use a low-key approach to the many marine wonders surrounding the ship. The sailing times are 10am, 1pm and 4pm. A sunset cruise can be arranged in July and August. These two trips are worth coming to Rockland, where there is plenty of free parking on the middle pier, lobstering the morning, have a lunch on the dock and sail in the afternoon, making a perfect day for any vacation. u

For more than a half a century the Hanscom’s have been harvesting wild blueberries from their barrens. In mid-August, both locals and visitors alike flock to the Hanscom Ridge Road, Marshfield, facility to treat themselves to a great downeast summer tradition. In addition to their summer blueberry treats, they pioneered the development of balsam fir holiday products in downeast Maine. Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, centerpieces and other specialty holiday creations are among the natural Maine products that the Hanscoms have shipped to brighten the holiday seasons of thousands of families across America. Early November sees the beginning of the process of harvesting the finest tip ends of the balsam fir branches. The freezing nights in downeast Maine at this time of year are the perfect ingredient to slow down sap flow, allowing the needles to form a strong bond with the branches. acadia & downeast Eastport’s Old Stone Mustard Mill Museum Raye’s Mustard Mill is a working museum located on Washington Street in Eastport (America’s eastern-most city), approximately eight miles down Route 190 from its intersection with Route 1 in Perry. The quaint and authentic mill is North America’s only working traditional stone ground mustard mill. At the turn of the 20th century, J. Wesley Raye started the mill to produce mustard for Maine’s burgeoning sardine industry. In the early 1900s, the small city of Eastport had more than 20 sardine canneries. Later in the century, when the sardine industry declined, Raye’s Mustard Mill became known for its award-winning gourmet and specialty mustards. This downeast institution has remained in the Raye family for over a century. Currently owned by Kevin and Karen Raye, this family run business remains committed to continuing the traditions of previous generations while focusing on expanding its national presence in the marketplace. u
The past is alive and well in Eastport In 1818, when America was a young nation, led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. At the time both the whaling and shipbuilding industries were booming. His entrepreneurship was exactly perfect for the time and he knew that he could meet all his customers needs by supplying hardware, harpoons, deadeyes, canvas, alcohol, and tobacco and everything else required for rigging, operating and provisioning a ship. While the original business site suffered through several fires and storms the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976 completely devastated the facility.u

O
n January 22, 1964, The Roosevelt International Park was established by agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20, 1964, the first ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Back by popular demand are complimentary outside walking tours of the estate and on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology (staff and weather permitting). The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. ADT. The park’s visitor center will remain open through October 31 to accommodate fall visitors. The visitors center offers interpretive displays, a short introductory video and a selection of memorabilia items. u

s early as the 1500s, when David Ingram sailed up the Penobscot River explorers believed the region was extraordinary. Some thought that the area was possibly Norumbega –the lost City of Gold. Samuel de Champlain attempted to find the gold but settled for a lucrative fur trade with the Indians. Lumber was king in Bangor during the city’s early history. River drivers ran logs harvested in Maine woods down the Penobscot River to the many mills that banked Bangor’s waterfront. Baxter State Park A Blend of Beauty and History for the Next Generation

ew England naturalist and author Henry David Thoreau was as drawn to the majestic Mount Katahdin as are the clouds that cling to its cliffs and Baxter Peak. Thoreau wrote about the mountain in his books and letters to friends, not being able to get enough of it with his eyes alone. It is Katahdin- which in Abenaki means “Greatest Mountain” - that draws and seduces visitors to its shadow and summit every year. Baxter State Park, consisting of over 209,000 acres attracts roughly 65,000 visitors a year. Jean Hoekwater is one of those who call the park home. She has been working as the park naturalist since 1988. It was love at first hike. “I fell in love with the park the first time I hiked as a college student in 1976. Those of us who are lucky enough to call this our job stay here because we all share a passion for the land and the inhabitants of the park and like to share that with the visitors,” said Hoekwater. “I still remain grateful for the wisdom and generosity of Percival Baxter, and everyone along the way who has protected the park so it is here today for future generations.” Governor Percival Baxter acquired the land that makes up Baxter State Park over a period of more than thirty years, beginning in 1931 with his first acquisition and his last in 1962 when he was 87 years old. It was described as “Baxter’s Magnificent Obsession” in which he dedicated most of his life to protecting a large tract of Maine wilderness. Back then, many people thought he was crazy to want to protect thousands of undeveloped acres. Today, he is hailed as a visionary. What’s New at the Park Park rangers and staff have been working on ways in which more people can get out and explore the wildness of the park – even those who are new to camping. Each of the eight roadside campgrounds have naturalist adventure packs available that are loaned out to families for the day, free of charge. The backpacks contain nature guides, binoculars, a journal and suggestions for activities in the outdoors as well as safety items such as a flashlight, whistle, first aid kit, map and compass. Those who utilize the packs are expected to bring add their own water, food and outer gear. “The packs are a fun way for families to begin exploring in nature together if they are new to hiking and camping,” said Hoekwater. “Novice campers should keep in mind that Katahdin is only one of the many peaks in the park. There are hikes for every level of ability. We recommend that you build your endurance and judgment by hiking some smaller but still worthwhile peaks. In addition to mountains, many people enjoy visiting our waterfalls.” Baxter’s eight roadside campgrounds also include walk-in sites, where campers can experience the feel of a backcountry site only a short distance from a main campground. The walk-in sites are great preparation for camping at a backcountry site such as Katahdin Lake (mentioned above), Russell or Kidney Pond campsites or at any of the nearly three dozen backcountry sites sprinkled throughout the park in scenic locations. Most campgrounds and even some backcountry sites – depending on where they are located – feature canoe rentals for only $1 an hour, complete with paddles and lifejackets. www.activitymaine.com

he Moosehead region is steeped in Native American history and culture. The late 19th century saw the rise of tourism with a number of great fishing and hunting camps located around the lake and a fleet of steamboats owned by the Coburn Steamboat Company. The Great Depression followed by WW II ended the “gilded age” of tourism for the area. By the mid -1950s, the legendary Moosehead Lake which stands as the center piece of this pristine section of Maine had enjoyed a rebirth as a vacation destination for a new group of young American families. u *
