Surfing in Maine might be the best kept secret that our coastline has to offer. For most people, surf culture exists in places like California and Hawaii, leaving us New Englanders off the map. This assumption however, sometimes gives us empty waves, and guarantees beginners plenty of space to learn.

he water temperature is definitely not tropical, but the summer months in Maine make up for those long winters and relentless springs. Maine is great place to learn how to surf for more reasons than one, it’s a joy that you’ll have to discover for yourself this summer! Arlberg Surf Tip: Surf movies and surf videos are great to learn to get to advanced surfing levels. From the take off to the aerial landing, it’s always interesting to watch and try yourself. Movies are available at Arlberg Surf Shops in Freeport and Scarborough or book a lesson with one of their instructors. Certified instructors, group or private lessons, they will travel to meet you and all equipment is provided! If your looking for a full body workout try a SUP. You will be amazed at the unique view you have because you stand at your full height and can see the life that is underneath your board as well as what is on the horizon. Maine Surfers Union is Portland’s only surf shop located at 36 Market Street in Portland’s Old Port. It is a year-round surf and 10

ortlanders have enjoyed amazing food and dining choices for many years and in the last decade, chefs in Maine’s largest city have been racking up accolades from all over the world. The local access to farms and seafood have helped make this scene grow in popularity. Whatever you are looking for, you will most likely find it here!
Portland Paddle offers guided sea kayaking trips and paddleboard rentals at the East End Beach on the Portland waterfront. It’s amazing how rugged and wild the coastline gets just a short paddle from bustling Portland harbor. The great variety of islands in Casco Bay offer endless possibilities for exploration. Look out for seals, lighthouses, wave-battered cliffs, seabirds, hidden beaches, wooden schooners and 19thcentury granite forts. Portland Paddle’s guided trips and lessons are led by licensed Maine Guides who are passionate about sharing their love of sea kayaking and their knowledge of the history and ecology of the Maine coast. or many, summer in Maine means time on the water. From the gorgeous Atlantic coastline to our hundreds of paddle-worthy lakes, ponds, and streams, there’s ample opportunity for aquatic enjoyment. Families with small kids often wonder what is the best way to get their little ones safely into a canoe or kayak. Maria Jennes, Regional Stewardship Manage for Maine Island Trail, spoke with me about how she and her partner, Travis Jornagen, owner of Tidal Kayak in Boothbay Harbor, have had their son Roy paddling with them since he was 6 months old. Maria and Travis are both Registered Maine Master Sea Kayak Guides, as well as Wilderness First Responders, so they really know their stuff when it comes to paddling. When getting your kids on the water for the first time, it’s important to pick a place you are comfortable with, ideally somewhere you have paddled before. If you are vacationing in Maine there are a number of kayak and canoe rental companies that can suggest some calm, easy locations to test out. Tidal Kayak,
south coastal either canoes or kayaks are preferable when starting out paddling with a small child, Maria said, “Whichever the parent is more comfortable with is the best option”. She also mentioned that open cockpit type watercraft are often easier with kids because they have some room to move about. When I asked Roy if he liked canoeing or kayaking better, he said, “Both!” If you plan on getting your kids out paddling regularly, buying them their own equipment is a great way to get them enthusiastic about paddling. In addition to life jackets, kid-sized paddles for both kayaks and canoes are available. Roy was very excited to tell me about his new wetsuit which, I was informed, he puts on any chance he gets. When paddling with kids remember:

Chose an area you are comfortable with. Select a watercraft you are familiar with. Everyone wears a life jacket. Be mindful of weather conditions. Let someone know where you are going. Bring snacks and water.
Kids as young as 6 months old can enjoy paddling with parents. With a little planning, and proper equipment, kids can acquire a life-long love of paddling, from early on. Get on your life jackets and get out there! u
has had kids as young as 6 months paddling, but recommends rentals as opposed to Jennes stressed that if you are nervous or uncomfortable, your kids will sense it. Life jackets are essential for everyone when paddling. There are a number of great options for kids. It’s important to find one that is Coast Guard approved, and most have a handle on the back so that you can easily pluck your child out of the water if they fall in. A quality life jacket can last a while, Maria’s son Roy has had the same life jacket since he was 6 months, he’s now 2 ½. Sometimes kids are reluctant to wear their life jackets at first, but making the jacket part of the fun can really help. “When Roy sees his life jacket, he gets really excited, because he knows we are going paddling” said Maria. When Maria and Travis first took Roy out on the water, they were in a canoe, Roy sat in the middle on a large pad. When asked if www.activitymaine.com

Maine’s Eastern Trail: Free Exploring and Adventure

T
he 65-mile long Eastern Trail extends from the Piscatqua River in Kittery to Bug Light in South Portland on Casco Bay and includes eight lighthouses along the way. The Eastern Trail (ET) is part of the 3,000 mile long East Coast Greenway that stretches from Key West, Florida to Calais, Maine. It is open to all kinds of recreational use, such as biking, hiking, bird watching, photography and even fishing along some spots. It consists of urban, remote, and suburban sections winding through the woods, along rivers and marshes, as well through towns and cities. However, less than three miles of the trail takes you on urban streets. “The thing we hear the most from people who have used the trail is that when they are on the trail they are able to get away from the noise of being on the road, whether they are walking, bicycling or doing any number of things in a beautiful natural setting,” said Bob Hamblen, the president of the Eastern Trail Alliance. “When you are on the trail, all you are hearing is the wind in the trees.”

Most recently, there have been bridges constructed across Route One in Saco and across the Maine Turnpike in Kennebunk. “It is quite a treat to walk or ride across these newly-constructed bridges. We’ve made the trail safer with these bridges and they give people a birds-eye view of their surroundings,” said Hamblen. Much of the trail was constructed from the abandoned railroad that was originally built in 1841 so it is flat and is easy to bicycle or hike. Visitors find it difficult to imagine that among the rolling hills and rambling brooks at the end of Desert Road, there is a desert. In 1797, the Tuttle family moved to the 300-acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing, resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to its destiny. u

hroughout the State of Maine there are more than 200 privately-owned campgrounds in addition to a number of State Parks that offer camping facilities. Many privately-owned campgrounds are included in this issue of Activities Guide. A camping stay offers the opportunity for a memorable vacation experience, whether simply camping as a vacation or camping as a means to be near an activity you are planning to enjoy. Diversity is the word to best describe the choices of Maine’s many campgrounds; you’ll discover a tremendous variety in the size, location and type of campgrounds located throughout the state. Dragon Disc Golf opened Dragan Field in Auburn in 2000, and has had a hand in helping to design a number of the courses around the state as well. In 2013, Dragon Disc Golf opened its latest design, a 18-hole course that will soon be a 27-hole course on the Topsham Fairgrounds in Topsham. One of the ways in which Dragon Disc Golf is furthering the growth of the sport is by offering instruction to new players, as well as offering tournaments that range from beginner-oriented instructional events to large Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) events, which draw skilled players from all over the northeastern US. u

Want to be happy? Buy experiences, not things Research shows that money can buy happiness, but how you spend it matters. By: Laura Moss and the Mother Nature Network
E
ven unpleasant vacation experiences — such as getting lost on an excursion — are later evaluated more positively than material purchases. What would bring you greater, longer-lasting happiness: purchasing an expensive item you’ve been eyeing — a bigger TV, a new couch, the latest smartphone — or booking that vacation you’ve been dreaming about? You could use the material item every day, and you wouldn’t have to wait very long for it — you could buy it today. That vacation on the other hand would be months away, and once it’s over, all you’ll have left are memories, photographs and maybe a souvenir. If you weigh your options this way, it’s logical to assume you’d derive the most pleasure from making the quick purchase — but according to science, that assumption is wrong. “One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation,” Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, told Fast Company. “We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed, but only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.” Zip-lining? Oh, you’ll remember that experience! Can you buy happiness? While we know that money does indeed buy happiness, it only does so up to a point. Studies show that after our basic needs are met, more money doesn’t make us that much happier. However, how we spend any extra income plays a role in our happiness. Gilovich has been studying the relationship between money and happiness for more than 20 years and has concluded that spending money on experiences — travel, outdoor activities, concerts, classes, movies — brings us more joy than buying material things. Even though new cars or gadgets may make us happy in the short-term, the novelty quickly wears off. In one of his studies, Gilovich asked people to report their happiness with major material or experiential purchases, and initially they ranked them about the same. However, over time, their satisfaction with material objects decreased while their satisfaction with experiences increased. He says one reason for this diminishing satisfaction with material goods is that our experiences are a bigger part of our identity than our possessions. 30

“You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but nonetheless they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences,” he said. Another reason we value experiences even after they’re over is because even negative experiences can become positive over time. Gilovich found that when he interviewed people about an experience that negatively impacted their happiness, just talking about it made their evaluation of it improve. Why? Because even unpleasant experiences can later become funny stories or looked at as character-building opportunities, he says. Shared experiences are also looked upon more favorably because they connect us to others more than shared consumption does. We feel more connected to people who have also backpacked through Europe than people who happen to have purchased the same iPhone. Also, experiences make us happier because we’re less likely to compare them to others’ in the same way that we compare material goods. “It certainly bothers us if we’re on a vacation and see people staying in a better hotel or flying first-class, but it doesn’t produce as much envy as when we’re outgunned on material goods,” Gilovich said. The role of anticipation But it isn’t just how we evaluate past experiences that brings us pleasure; even simply anticipating future ones is more enjoyable than anticipating the purchase of a material object. Gilovich found that experiential purchases like trips trump physical purchases because the value of buying anything begins before you actually purchase it. And while waiting for a beach vacation is filled with possibility, you know what you’re getting with a material item. “You can think about waiting for a delicious meal at a nice restaurant or looking forward to a vacation and how different that feels from waiting for, say, your pre-ordered iPhone to arrive. Or when the two-day shipping on Amazon Prime doesn’t seem fast enough,” Amit Kumar, one of Gilovich’s colleagues, told The Atlantic. The researchers also found that the act of even waiting in line to make a purchase is more enjoyable for people intending to spend money on an experience.

he Lucy family’s favorite state park in Maine is Rangeley Lakes State Park where Ellen and John, and their four children ages six to 17– Brian, Kevin, Carolyn and Abby love to spend a week or two every summer. They load up the suburban with tents, sleeping bags, camping equipment, clothing, water skis, food, and bikes, while towing a boat behind. The family also brings a wealth of enthusiasm, energy and passion for God’s creation. “We love to take the kids and go swimming at grassy beach, play badminton and baseball at the playground, walk on park trails and ride our bikes around the loop and sit around the campground at night,” said Ellen. “We love the boat access - we can moor the boat and walk right up to it to and go out on beautiful Rangeley Lake. It is a nice lake for fishing and skiing. We go to town in the boat as well - park at the town beach and use those facilities as well as

western lakes & mountains go into town,” said Ellen. “The park has spacious sites, a group area, shower building, a playground and is reasonably priced. Plus, we love the town. The staff has been great and is available if we have emergencies. There is a medical clinic in town. People are so knowledgeable about hikes and things to see. We also like visiting with the campground host.” Maine’s Division of Parks and Public Lands oversees 48 state parks and historic sites located throughout the state, and more than two million people each year visit and stay at the parks for a variety of recreational experiences. Rangeley is one of those parks. In Rangeley, while camping at the state park, there are plenty of things to do in town if the weather turns rainy. “When we camp at Rangeley - it almost always rains in June because we like to go right when school gets out,” said Ellen Lucy. “We sometimes go into the town of Rangeley. We love the IGA food store and Wes, the wonderful owner of the book/gift store recognizes us- and I think looks for us - every year! He (Wes) has been very helpful in suggesting books for all of us at different stages of reading. There is a bowling alley in town now, and Frosty Ice Cream, which we can’t miss. On one of our trips to town - we go daily for ice - we eat at the Red Onion restaurant. he Rangeley Lakes Region offers 70 miles of organized ATV Trails open to the public for riding. The ATV Riding season starts Memorial Day Weekend, and closes on October 31st of each year. ATV MAPS: Are available of the area, you may purchase maps at Rev-It-Up Sport Shop, Rangeley Chamber of Commerce, Lakeside Convenience and Boss Power Equipment. MAIN STREET ACCESS: Our club received permission to access Main Street using our ATV’s/side by sides. Main Street access starts at the stop sign on Depot Street when you are facing Main Street, proceed with a right hand turn and ride with the flow of traffic (speed limit is 20mph). You CANNOT PARK ON MAIN STREET OR IN CAR PARKING SPOTS; however, you can patronize the businesses that have private parking with a sign that indicates this. There are many businesses that you can stop at, gift stores, restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, ice cream shops, bowling alley, hotels, etc. There are many hotels, B&B’s on Main Street to stay at to make it more convenient for the ATV riders. You can ride right from your hotel room without having to trailer to an unloading zone. MOOSE LOOP TRAIL: 170 plus miles incorporates 9 towns, it is the biggest loop that connects the most towns in the State of Maine. It is suggested you plan 2 days to do this trip and stay overnight somewhere. Moose Loop maps are available for $4.00 each at RevIt-Up Sport Shop. NORTH & SOUTH LOOP TRAILS: Nice 20 mile loop trails that are close to Rangeley, if you are not looking for a super long ride.

The abstract nature of future experiences may make them seem more gratifying, but it’s also possible that waiting for an experience typically involves far less competition than waiting for a material item. Take some of the more disturbing headlines from Black Friday, for example. “You sometimes hear stories about people rioting, smashing windows, pepper-spraying one another, or otherwise treating others badly when they have to wait,” Kumar said in a news release. “Our work shows that this kind of behavior is much more likely in instances where people are waiting to acquire a possession than when they’re waiting for tickets to a performance or to taste the offerings at their city’s newest food truck.” In addition to making people happier, spending money on experiential purchases also makes people more generous and more likely to participate in social activities. Therefore, Gilovich’s research could influence not only personal spending, but also spending on a much larger scale, affecting how much vacation time employers offer and how governments allocate spending on recreational spaces like parks. “Our research is important to society because it suggests that overall well-being can be advanced by providing an infrastructure that affords experiences — such as parks, trails, beaches — as much as it does material consumption,” Gilovich said. u www.activitymaine.com

Take a Midcoast hike By Kate Kastelein
M
aine is known for great hiking and many enthusiasts flock to Kathadin and the Camden Hills, but there are some great, lesser known trails in the midcoast. Lincoln County, for example, has some great, easy trails that are open year-round and free! When visiting Boothbay, Damariscotta or Pemaquid this summer, be sure to check out some of the trails, for gorgeous views and close encounters with the flora and fauna. Boothbay Region Land Trust - (www.bbrlt.org) From easy to challenging, The Boothbay Region Land Trust has over 30 miles of trails all over the Boothbay Peninsula, and they even maintain trails on Damariscove and Indiantown Islands. Guided walks are often year round, and a schedule of upcoming events can be found on the BRLT website which also has maps and a trail guide. Cost: Free.
The Damariscotta River Association - (www.damariscottariver.org/) Up the road a bit from Boothbay Harbor, is Damariscotta. Winding down the peninsula from Damariscotta to South Bristol is the beautiful Damariscotta River. All along the river, you can find trails of various difficulty levels, maintained by the Damariscotta River Association. If you have small children

interested in taking a hike, an easy one to try is located at the DRA farm on the Belvedre Rd. in Damarriscotta. The Dodge Point preserve and hiking area located on the River Rd. in Newcastle is very popular with both locals and visitors to the area. The website for the DRA contains a map of all their preserves and hiking areas. Cost: Free. The Pemaquid Water Association (www.pemaquidwatershed. org/). If you’re taking a drive to Pemaquid to see the beautiful Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, consider taking a quick hike on one of the many trails maintained by the Pemaquid Watershed Association. 8 preserves and 5 hiking trails along the Pemaquid River from Nobleboro to Bristol, are maintained by the PWA. Detailed maps and descriptions of each hiking trail are available on the PWA website. Cost: Free. Check out one, or all of the trails at any of these great locations. Each offers a unique view of the astounding natural beauty around Lincoln County. If you would like to bring a dog to any of the areas listed, check the websites first. Most allow canine companions, but it’s recommended to keep your dog on a leash and please clean up after your pet. u

settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. y late 1963, George McEvoy, just 27 years old, was amassing a collection of railroad memorabilia that filled the family home in Grafton, Massachusetts and it appeared that their Southport, Maine summer cottage was about to succumb to the same fate. He had to find a place to store his collection.

t 27 years old, Dan Pease started Rock Harbor Restaurant on Main Street in Rockland, Maine with the idea of some day making it a brew pub. After 2 years of growing the restaurant into one of Rockland’s favorite pubs, a brewery in southern Maine decided to close it’s doors. The opportunity to start a brewery presented itself and Dan purchased the equipment and moved it two hours north and installed it at Rock Harbor in July of 2013. After licensing Rock Harbor Brewing Co., the brewing began and by October the first pints were poured. Since October Dan has made three different IPAs, an ESB, Pale Ale and two stouts. His only previous experience in brewing was ten years of home brewing, but through research and experimenting he has been able to create brews that people at Rock Harbor Pub & Brewery are loving. u www.activitymaine.com

ne of Maine’s most popular activities is driving the coast in search of lighthouses. Two hundred years ago lighthouses were incredibly important in safely bringing people and goods to Maine from around the world. At that time there were no cars or highways along Maine’s coast and sailors plying through Maine’s 4,000 islands hoped to have one lighthouse in view at all times and preferably two. “Keepers” maintained the lights at all times and used large bells to respond to ships that approached to close. Sometimes “fog dogs” were trained to ring the bells. Today, Bar Harbor Whale Watching Company offers tours to see many of Maine’s offshore and most storied lights. Throughout the summer and fall they offer a daily fully narrated Lighthouse and Acadia Park tour in the waters around Mount Desert Island to see five island lighthouses, a life-saving station, and fjord-like Somes Sound. On July 25, 2015 they are offering an all-day 17-lighthouse US/Canada Grand Slam Lighthouse Photography Tour. An Adventurous Three Nation Vacation Experience For 2015

T
he Quoddy Loop provides a unique opportunity to visit and enjoy the scenic coastal and island communities of Down East Maine, the home of the Passamaquoddy Nation and the West Fundy Isles of New Brunswick. Adventures abound: nature walks, whale watching cruises, lighthouse and history tours, galleries with paintings, jewelry, pottery and sculpture by fine local artists as well as chance to enjoy a leisurely pace and refresh one’s self. Each of three communities has its own rich history. It is believed that ancestors of current Passamaquoddy tribal members lived on the Quoddy Loop more than twelve thousand years ago. Ancient art depicting their history and culture is found in three thousand year old petroglyphs carved in rocks at a shorefront site in Machiasport. Pierre Dugua, Samuel Champlain and a group of seventy-seven French explorers, established the first European settlement north of St Augustine, Florida on St. Croix Island, just of the present day Calais, Maine in 1604. The few settler survivors of the horrible winter of 1604-1605 were saved and helped to relocate to Nova Scotia by members of the Passamaquoddy Nation. During the Revolutionary War the Passamaquoddy tribe joined forces with Americans in their fight for independence. Today the Passamaquoddy Nation is physically located on two reservations in Down East, Maine. One reservation is located in Indian Township near Princeton; while the other reservation is located at Pleasant Point on Passamaquoddy Bay a short distance from Eastport.
Campobello Island, Deer Island and Grand Manan Island are the three Fundy Isles of New Brunswick that lie closest to their American neighbors. The Quoddy Loop has a number of light houses providing visibility for the mariners plying the local waters but two lights are especially well known as attractions for visitors- West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec and East Quoddy Head Harbour Light Station on Campobello Island. In addition to the pristine views provided from these two lights they both have wonderful nature walks to enjoy. Passamaquoddy Bay affords nature lovers the opportunity to be entertained by eagles, porpoises and whales while cruising these pristine waters with their immense tides aboard local charter boats out of Lubec and Eastport. ust off the beaten path at the foot of the University of Maine at Machias College Hill where Routes 1 and 92 intersect an amazing 11 mile trek steeped in history, culture and exciting natural wonders awaits the adventurous. Route 92 in Machias is Elm Street. The first stop on the trail is at “Bad Little Falls”, located just as one turns onto Route 92. Machias is derived from the Native American word Mechises which means bad little falls or a bad run of water. “Bad Little Falls Park” offers a perfect setting for a picnic and has ample parking for checking out this natural wonder. After savoring the beauty of the falls and the splendid view the park provides, one can walk up Elm Street (Route 92) a little less than .1 of a mile to Avery Street. Turn left down Avery Street to O’Brien Cemetery.

Upon leaving the cemetery you can start your drive south on Route 92 and two (2) miles down the road you will cross into the town of Machiasport. At the 3.7mile point of your journey you will find on your right Liberty Hall. It was built in 1873 in a bold Italianate architectural style at a cost of $ 1000.00. Its architect was Andrew Gilson of Machias. The building served as the Machiasport town hall until 2000 and in addition to its purely civic functions served as a community center for theater productions, lectures, festivals and basketball games. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Over the past several years this Victorian landmark has undergone a major restoration. Diagonally across the street from Liberty Hall is the historic Gates House which was built c.1807. The home was purchased by Nathan Gates and his family occupied it for nearly 120 years. Since 1966, it has served as a museum and headquarters for the Machiasport Historical Society. In 1975, it was entered on the National Register of Historic Places. During the summer the museum with its wonderful maritime exhibits is open to the public. Approximately .2 of a mile south on Route 92 from Liberty Hall and the Gates House on a steep bluff overlooking Machias Bay is the historic Machiasport Congregational Church. This church was built just two years after incorporation of the town in 1828. The church possesses one of the most picturesque

acadia & downeast settings of any church in New England. Fort O’Brien State Park is a must stop on the Down East Heritage Trail. It is just off Route 92 about .2 of a mile south of the Congregational Church. Here you will find a great spot to hike and picnic as well as enjoy a spectacular view of Machias Bay where the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was successfully fought by a small band of American patriots. South on Route 92 approximately one mile, you will find on your left Clark Point Road (also known as Birch Point). Down at the waters edge on a ledge has been found the site of ancient petroglyphs that were carved into the rocks as long as 3000 years ago by members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe. It is believed that ancestors of present day Passamaquoddy people have lived in the region for as many as 12,000 years. These picture rocks tell the rich history and culture of the Passamaquoddy Tribe. Nine (9) miles south on your adventure, you will see to your left Pettegrow Point Road, as you turn onto Pettegrow Point Road you will see an old c.1890 cape and barn. The completely finished off cow barn is the home of the Blue Lobster Gallery a fine art gallery. Proceeding down Pettegrow Point Road approximately .8 of a mile you will come to the Bucks Harbor Public Pier. Here you will have an opportunity to see the Bucks Harbor fleet. Now its time to go back up Pettegrow Point Road .8 of a mile to the intersection of Route 92 (Port Road) and take a left onto Route 92. You are again heading south and just short of a mile on your left you will find Jasper Beach. Wave polished pebbles of jasper and rhyolite give it a distinctive color. There is only one other jasper beach in the world and it is in Japan. Two (2) miles south of Jasper Beach Park on Route 92 is the village of Starboard. Here you will see a fully equipped boat yard, a one-room school that served the community from 1804 to 1938 and a beautiful beach. At low tide you can walk on a sandbar out to the “Point of Maine”. Maine’s Down East Heritage Trail offers an opportunity to not only discover a piece of our American heritage but a time to be renewed in body and spirit by the sights and sounds of the sea around you. u

On January 22, 1964, The Roosevelt International Park was established by agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20, 1964 the first ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island.

Barreled Souls Brewing Company is located just a few blocks from Funtown/Splashtown USA and the Cinemagic in Saco, Maine off of Route 1. They love to brew beers with unique ingredients. Occasionally they brew beers like their MCAM which is brewed with bacon and 25 pounds of cinnamon and The Fennel which is brewed with grilled oranges, grilled fennel and sage leaves. Extra North If you head 2 hours North West of Portland to the Farmington & Skowhegan area you’ll find two really nice destination breweries called Bigelow Brewing Company and Tumbledown Brewing Company. Tumbledown is in Farmington and located in a minimall. Tumbledown Bigelow is nustled into little farm in Skowhegan, Maine. The owners refit a custom-built horse barn into a cozy brewery with a fireplace. My favorite beer from Bigelow is their Dementia Double IPA, a hefty double IPA that is piney and delicious. Tumbledown Brewing Company is located in Farmington, Maine that are very small in operation yet produce traditionally styled craft beers. Their Tumbledown Red Ale is their flagship and is a malt forward ale that keeps you wanting more. Bangor/Orono Bangor is a city often forgotten by visitors to Maine. It’s a city that is growing at a rapid rate in both the culinary and beverage industry, just like Portland. The Drive to Bangor can be done 100% on highway 95 which has beautiful views of Maine’s inland terrain. Geaghan’s Pub is located on Main Street in Bangor. Another awesome (and new) brewery located just under 15 minutes outside of Bangor is Orono Brewing Company located in the college town of Orono, Maine. They are brand new to the brewing scene in Maine and have been producing some broad variety of beer styles.
