Learn to Surf T

S

urfing in Maine might be the best kept secret that our coastline has to offer. For most people, surf culture exists in places like California and Hawaii, leaving us New Englanders off the map. This assumption however, sometimes gives us empty waves, and guarantees beginners plenty of space to learn.

The water temperature is definitely not tropical, but the summer months in Maine make up for those long winters and relentless springs. Maine is great place to learn how to surf for more reasons than one, it’s a joy that you’ll have to discover for yourself this summer! Arlberg Surf Tip: Surf movies and surf videos are great to learn to get to advanced surfing levels. From the take off to the aerial landing, it’s always interesting to watch and try yourself. Movies are available at Arlberg Surf Shops in Freeport and Scarborough or book a lesson with one of their instructors. Certified instructors, group or private lessons, they will travel to meet you and all equipment is provided! If your looking for a full body workout try a SUP. You will be amazed at the unique view you have because you stand at your full height and can see the life that is underneath your board as well as what is on the horizon. Maine Surfers Union Surf shop is Portland’s only surf shop located at 36 Market St, in Portland’s Old Port. It is a year round Surf & Paddle Lifestyle Shop that was the recipient of Portland Buy Local Indie Biz Awards Best New Business for 2013. MSU has what you need to get in the water year round, from winter & summer wetsuits, gloves, booties & a very impressive selection of 10

hand shaped surfboards that you will not find anywhere else in New England. They also have top brands of Paddle Boards for beginners to the most seasoned vet. MSU has products for the non-surfers in the family with year round clothing lines for men and women from O’Neill, Rhythm, RVCA, Patagonia, LiveME and many more. Guys if you’re looking for board shorts, button downs, hats we have a wide urban & beach wear selection. Lady’s if you’re looking for a bikini’s, dresses, skirts & something fun to go out on the town or to the beach they have you covered.MSU also has an in house head shaper, stop by and watch Nick of Neto Shapes design and shape a surfboard from start to finish in their own shaping bay. They also do custom design surfboards for any skill level; you dream it up, they will build it, along with surfboard building classes. Events at the shop this summer: First Friday of the month Art Walk with local artists displays, live music, beer tasting & live surfboard shaping demonstrations. Every third Thursday if the Month is free movie night, bring a beach chair and hang out and watch a funs surf movie with a good group of people. apturing that perfect picture postcard shot while on vacation might be thought to be the product of luck, but with the right light and a few basic camera adjustments you too can make an image to wow your friends. Lots of tutorials cover the basics of capturing the morning and evening light for the best colors, composition including the rule of thirds and more. However, there are a couple of capture settings in your camera that are often missed and confused. In just seconds you can set your camera and instantly start making better pictures.

Where the Locals Eat!

I see a lot of people shooting in the green full ‘Auto’ mode. I feel camera manufacturers misspell ‘Auto’ as it really should be ‘Awful.’ The Auto mode limits the quality you can capture and handicaps your ability to do more with your images. A better choice is to select ‘P’ for Program, which still offers the same simplicity as Auto, except for couple of things that can help improve the quality of your images. If your camera can capture in RAW mode, then you are likely disabling that function when shooting in full Auto mode. RAW files contain nearly 5 times the detail of a normal JPG file and will afford you opportunities to make better prints. If your shot was too bright or too dark, you can fix that by opening the RAW file in an image-editing program, where you can adjust the photo a whopping plus or minus 5 whole f-stops, after you have shot your picture! Many cameras let you shoot in both RAW and JPG at once - I recommend choosing that dual option now, as later, when you become more familiar with RAW processing, you will have those plentiful files to work with. Another important and overlooked setting is ‘White Balance.’ This setting lets you capture the proper colors when shooting under different sources of light. White balance is even more important if you only save in JPG mode, as you won’t have the same ability to adjust this after you shoot like you can with a RAW file. ‘Auto’ White Balance (AWB) is another instance where the camera manufacturers mistake ‘Awful’ for ‘Auto.’ Setting your camera to AWB means you are telling your camera to find the dominant color in the scene and neutralize it by adding almost an equal amount of the opposite color. AWB mode can make colorful scenes look dull and make your images have the wrong colors. Let’s look at an example... Let’s say you go hiking and photograph people or wildlife among green trees and green grass. AWB mode will neutralize the green by adding See ‘Photos’ on page 72

south coastal Portland Schooner Company has been making memories for Casco Bay visitors since 2002. Owned and operated by husband and wife team, Scott Reischmann and Michelle Thresher, they offer an authentic, Old World sailing experience from May through October aboard Portland’s only historic windjammers. Whether you’re looking to experience the Portland waterfront from a unique perspective or just hoping to step back to a simpler time for a couple hours, Portland Schooner Company offers an experience you don’t want to miss. The adventure begins aboard one of their classic wooden schooners, Wendameen or Bagheera. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, both schooners were designed by famed naval architect, John G. Alden, in the early 1900s and built by some of the best craftsmen in the world at the shipyards of East Boothbay, Maine. Two-hour sails depart from the Maine State Pier in Portland’s Old Port and are offered four times daily, presenting visitors with a perfect vantage point for viewing Portland’s unforgettable sights and sounds – from lighthouses and seabirds to seals and the rocky coastline. The friendly, professional crew is not only there to provide you with a safe trip … they’re happy to share a bit of Casco Bay history and trivia. You’re invited to join in any way you’d like: hoisting the sails alongside a deckhand, taking a turn at the ship’s wheel, or just relaxing and enjoying the ocean breeze and salt air. And you’re welcome to bring food and drink, including beer and wine, aboard. The cost for a two-hour sail is just $39 for adults and $15 for children. Though not required, reservations are strongly encouraged. If you’ve got more time to spend on Casco Bay, Portland Schooner Company also offers charters for family or corporate functions, lunchtime lobster bakes on scenic Cow Island, and overnight excursions where you can spend an evening nestled in a quiet island anchorage. u

Visitors find it difficult to imagine that among the rolling hills and rambling brooks at the end of Desert Road, there is a desert. Once you take your first step through the gift shop’s front door, however, your doubts will vanish as you enter the vast and sandy Desert of Maine. In 1797, the Tuttle family moved to the 300-acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing, resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to its destiny. u

hroughout the State of Maine there are more than 200 privately-owned campgrounds in addition to a number of State Parks that offer camping facilities. Many privately-owned campgrounds are included in this issue of Activities Guide. A camping stay offers the opportunity for a memorable vacation experience, whether simply camping as a vacation or camping as a means to be near an activity you are planning to enjoy. Diversity is the word to best describe the choices of Maine’s many campgrounds; you’ll discover a tremendous variety in the size, location and type of campgrounds located throughout the state. These range from very small properties where the camping experience is the focus to large resorts that offer every imaginable amenity. Even if you have never camped before, or do not have camping equipment, you’ll find quite a number of places that offer onsite rentals and cabin rentals. Some RV dealers also offer rental units for nearby campgrounds. This is a great way to break into the camping experience that has become one of the most popular types of vacations today. Another way to discover camping and be versatile in your vacation is to rent an RV and travel as you wish! Some of the RV dealers in this issue offer rentals and are ready and pleased to work with you in your planning. Also, these dealers can provide expert advice in helping you make selections in camping gear if you prefer to own your own equipment. When planning your getaway, consider what you are looking for in your camping experience --just a place to call home base for other activities you are planning, or a facility that offers enough that it is a vacation in itself. Some campgrounds offer on-site recreational opportunities such as a pool, rec hall and sports fields, scheduled activities and a variety of entertainment. Many are located on lakes, rivers or the ocean, and offer a beach, swimming, fishing and even a variety of boat rentals. In the more popularly visited areas of the state, campgrounds often provide a home base for area activities and attractions and quite a number either offer shuttle service or are on a trolley route.

Consider your needs and expectations in advance to maximize your vacation experience and undoubtedly your dollar value. It may be important to know what is offered or to get information about particular questions in advance. This can be done by visiting the campground’s Web site, referring to their advertising or calling with questions. Even if a particular resource or recreational opportunity isn’t offered at the campground, it may be available nearby.

Questions or considerations might include some of the following: • Do you offer any camping rental equipment, RVs or cabins? • Is there shuttle or trolley service available to nearby attractions? • Is there a well-stocked store? How about a snack bar or restaurant? • Are campfires permitted? How about firewood and ice? • Are there any trails for hiking or biking--even ATVing? • Is there WiFi or cable TV? • If a more remote location, how is cell phone reception in the area? • What hook-ups for trailers and RVs are available? Is there 50 amp electric? • Are tents accepted? • Can you bring your own boat? Are there launching facilities and dock space available? • How about pet policies and requirements for camping with pets?

Why Hire a Maine Guide?

R

egistered Maine Guides take pride in advising and showing others the way in the great outdoors. These are people who follow in the footsteps of Joe Polis, the Penobscot Indian Guide who led Henry David Thoreau on a journey through the forested land and along the lakes and streams surrounding Mount Katahdin. Cornelia Thurza Crosby, aka Fly Rod Crosby, became the first Maine Guide in 1897. Since then, many have learned to share their love and knowledge of the outdoors with others. Today, one must complete rigorous oral and written examinations to become a registered guide.

“Whether bird watching in a field, bear hunting in the woods, fly fishing in a river or sea kayaking along the coast, Registered Maine Guides provide personalized outdoor adventures.” They’ll teach you to trap, boat, snowmobile and camp in primitive areas. With skill and experience, they’ll help you interpret the natural world. Imagine spending an unforgettable day with someone who knows the best hiking route or where the moose graze, teaches you how to prepare meals over the camp fire and set up your tent under the stars. With a guide, you can safely connect with nature while learning from someone with first-hand knowledge of the area. With outstanding instructors on staff, they offer outdoor education to help men and women alike achieve some of their most desired dreams. Their school is more than becoming a Registered Maine Guide, or being able to get yourself out of the wilderness with survival techniques. It is about becoming a leader of self. Getting to know who you are, and in the process learning, experiencing and gathering new data to bring you to the fore front of where you want to be.Maine Outdoor Learning Center helps those seeking more knowledge of the woods and waters of Maine, along with every place one may travel. Hiking Solo

western lakes & mountains

by Leigh Macmillen Hayes

It drives my sister crazy that I hike alone. She even gave me a big whistle/compass combo for Christmas one year. Sometimes I remember to take it, but I prefer my smaller compass. Besides, when I’m deep in the woods or atop a mountain, who will hear me whistle? I’m more afraid of people on the street, than what I might encounter in the woods. Don’t get me wrong. I love to hike with a companion. It’s just a different experience to hike alone. Going solo is sacred; it’s quiet and I can hear my own thoughts. Some people are afraid to be alone--even at home. Their TVs, radios and iPods are always blaring. I enjoy my own company and being alone with my thoughts--getting lost in my own little world. Okay, so maybe I’m weird or anti-social. While venturing out, I’ve made discoveries and found incredible vistas. I can stop and go at my own pace. I have more time to study plants, observe the landscape and wonder what happened, watch birds or look for mammal tracks and sign. When I hike alone I am at peace. It’s an exhilarating and powerful experience. All my senses become alert. I notice the holes in trees left by pileated woodpeckers, bark beetles and yellow-bellied sap suckers. I smell the skunky odor of fox urine, dried leaves and the dampness of the forest floor. I hear the caw cawing of the crows, chattering of the squirrels sending out a warning that I am in the area and trees that moan and groan as the wind pushes them around. Even if I don’t have a journal with me, I mentally jot down what I see, smell and hear. And sometimes I’m momentarily frightened. Rattling dried beech or oak leaves stop me in my tracks. A ruffed grouse startles me as much as I startle it. Amazing how a bird that weighs 1 1/2 pounds has such a thunderous and powerful takeoff--sometimes I momentarily mistake it for a moose. As I’ve become more comfortable hiking by myself, nature has opened itself up to me. It allows me to be introspective. And it allows total submersion into the surroundings. When I first started hiking solo I was a little nervous, but now I embrace the opportunity. It’s magical. It’s a chance to be fully present. Here. Now. u

HIGHLANDS Mt Katahdin – A Maine Gem

The Penobscot Indian people’s spiritual tradition is that it would be sacrilegious for one of them to climb to the top of Mount Katahdin. They believe that the highest god in their spiritual system, Glukab, sent the angry god, Pamola, to Pamalo Peak for eternity because of his bad deeds. Mount Katahdin remains very special to them. Henry David Thoreau, author and naturalist was drawn to this legendary mountain

and wrote about it in his books and in letters to friends. In the height of the Great Depression, Governor Percival Baxter began acquiring land that would form his legacy, Baxter State Park. In 1962, this then elderly visionary put the last piece of this wilderness gem in place. Today, Park rangers and staff continue to make this wonderful wilderness preserve a most see spot for your bucket list. u www.activitymaine.com

he Moosehead region is steeped in Native American history and culture. The late 19th century saw the rise of tourism with a number of great fishing and hunting camps located around the lake and a fleet of steamboats owned by the Coburn Steamboat Company. The Great Depression followed by WW II ended the “gilded age” of tourism for the area. By the mid -1950s, the legendary Moosehead Lake, which stands as the center piece of this pristine section of Maine, had enjoyed a rebirth as a vacation destination for a new group of young American families. u

or just short of a century, Maynard’s In Maine has provided their guests with outstanding wilderness experiences in addition to excellent bungalow style cabin accommodations and great dining with wholesome fresh farm foods prepared to perfection. The Moosehead area offers outstanding landlocked salmon, trout and togue fishing. Recently, Billy Maynard landed a 29.67 lb togue on Moosehead Lake measuring 41” long. His huge catch beats the old Moosehead Lake record set in 1961 of a 28 pound 12 ounce togue. The area’s large, pristine forests provide excellent cover for deer, bear and small game and make it an outstanding hunting region. Here guests at Maynard’s will find a real pearl in the North Woods. Within their city limits are walkable downtowns, bird sanctuaries, scenic river paths, summer concerts and theatre, museums, golf courses and a multitude of shops and eateries. There are trails for running, biking and hiking throughout each. These charming cities are home to unique architecture, sites such as the 31-foot statue of the legendary lumberjack, Paul Bunyan, Old Fort Western, which dates to commerce on the Kennebec in 1754, the Bangor State Fair and The Great Falls Balloon Festival Within a short drive, you can be in the Belgrade Lakes Region, Maine’s premier inland resort area. This chain of seven lakes is famous for largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing and was the inspiration for the classic movie, On Golden Pond. Bangor is the gateway to the Maine Highlands, an area that has been preserved to be forever wild. Among its features is Gulf Hagas, known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, canoeing, whitewater rafting-you can do it all in central Maine. ocated on the banks of the Kennebec River, Waterville is home to a mix of shops and restaurants as well as two colleges, Thomas College and Colby College. A Main Street Maine community, Waterville takes great pride in its downtown, which is home to seven structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to many shops and one-of-a-kind eateries. Waterville is easily accessed with two exits off Interstate 95 as well as Route 201, which touts a national, historic byway and is part of the Kennebec-Chaudiere Corridor. Visitors to Waterville will enjoy numerous arts and cultural amenities, including the newly renovated Waterville Opera House and Colby College Museum of Art, now the state’s largest art gallery. Waterville hosts a year round calendar of outstanding events, such as the Maine International Film Festival, Waterville Intown ArtsFest, Harvest Fest, Downtown Waterville Farmers’ Market and the Taste of Waterville. This year marks the 22nd Taste of Waterville. Originally, the Taste was an event that recognized the area’s restaurants and gave locals a chance to dine in the streets of downtown. After 22 years, the Taste has turned into an all-day event with something for everyone. The Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce took over coordinating the event soon after it started and has continued to ensure the event grows, is successful and properly exhibits what this region has to offer. Running from 11AM-11PM, one can find limitless food choices, children’s activities, vendors, and live music. For more information visit www. tasteofwaterville.com or call the Chamber at (207) 873-3315. Shoppers will find a wide array of products, including upscale women’s clothing, home furnishings, jewelry, Maine-made products, art, toys and books, and much more in the greater Waterville area. Dining options are equally as diverse, offering authentic Lebanese and Mexican cuisines, Asian specialties, eclectic American fare, delicious pub food, barbeque, and fresh seafood, great bagels, sandwiches and coffee. airfield is located in southern Somerset County in the heart of Maine’s Kennebec Valley, and straddling the Waterville and Skowhegan “metropolitan” areas. The town is bound on the East by the historic Kennebec River and to the west by the Belgrade Lakes region. Fairfield is known as an important crossroads and is the point of intersection of two of the largest transportation corridors in the state, U.S. Route 201 and Interstate 95, and home to many thriving businesses, and with 55 square miles also contains large areas of developable land. The town has a substantial urban residential and historic downtown district and several quaint unincorporated villages that contribute to its charm and character. With a community college, regional high school, an easy commute to anywhere in Central Maine, and unrivaled access to outdoor sports and recreation, Fairfield is a great place to call home! Fairfield has some of the best bass fishing in the state and has several large antique shops on Route 201. In 2013 we were awarded “Business Friendly” certification by the state. Every spring, the residents of Brunswick eagerly await the opening of Fat Boy Drive-In and every fall they mourn when it closes. Every summer since 1955, Fat Boy has been haunting the grounds for Maine fishermen, Naval aviators, Bowdoin College students and thousands of coastal vacationers. wiscasset

K

nown as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the Customs House (1870). If you haven’t seen Wiscasset Village’s wonderful sunken garden opposite the Nickels-Sortwell House—take an extra few minutes and enjoy its beauty. u

magenta and the subject in the scene will have a purplish cast. You can spend hours fixing the colors in a photo-editing program like Adobe Photoshop, but there is a much simpler and better way that takes less than 10 seconds of your time. Simply set the white balance appropriately in the camera. Find the White Balance button or menu item and look for the icons and plain English descriptions of ‘Sunny,’ ‘Cloudy,’ ‘Florescent,’ ‘Tungsten’ or ‘Incandescent.’ Taking the less than 10 seconds to set the White Balance will greatly improve the colors in your images and save you hours of color correcting later. My recommendation for most all outdoor daytime shooting is to set White Balance to ‘Cloudy’ - even on bright sunny days. Colors will look more natural, sunrises and sunsets will especially look nicer. When shooting after the sunsets try setting the White Balance to Tungsten or Incandescent to capture the true colors of nighttime - this is especially good for fireworks. So practice finding your White Balance menu and learn to easily change it as needed , it is well worth it. Happy Shooting! Mike Leonard is a Maine Photographer who teaches photography and Photoshop classes and can be hired as a photo guide to help you learn and make the most of your camera while on vacation. damariscotta Seven rooms of contemporary natural fiber fashions (& jewelry!)

There’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. Damariscotta serves as the shopping and financial center for surrounding communities, and is the site of many fine homes. Its attractive Main Street boasts numerous stores, shops and restaurants. The Chapman-Hall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. Some of the shell heaps run as deep as 30 feet. The Damariscotta Region offers unrivaled opportunities for all. u

ROCKLAND

This happening town is no longer Midcoast Maine’s best-kept secret!

A

t 27 years old, Dan Pease started Rock Harbor Restaurant on Main Street in Rockland, Maine with the idea of some day making it a brew pub. After 2 years of growing the restaurant into one of Rockland’s favorite pubs, a brewery in southern Maine decided to close it’s doors. The opportunity to start a brewery presented itself and Dan purchased the equipment and moved it two hours north and installed it at Rock Harbor in July of 2013. After licensing Rock Harbor Brewing Co., the brewing began and by October the first pints were poured. Since October Dan has made three different IPAs, an ESB, Pale Ale and two stouts. His only previous experience in brewing was ten years of home brewing, but through research and experimenting he has been able to create brews that people at Rock Harbor Pub & Brewery are loving. u www.activitymaine.com

ne of Maine’s most popular activities is driving the coast in search of lighthouses. Two hundred years ago lighthouses were incredibly important in safely bringing people and goods to Maine from around the world. At that time there were no cars or highways along Maine’s coast and sailors plying through Maine’s 4,000 islands hoped to have one lighthouse in view at all times and preferably two. “Keepers” maintained the lights at all times and used large bells to respond to ships that approached to close. Today, Bar Harbor Whale Watching Company specializes in getting people out to see many of Maine’s offshore most storied lights. Throughout the summer and fall they offer a daily fully narrated Lighthouse and Acadia Park tour in the waters around Mount Desert Island to see five island lighthouses, a life-saving station, and fjord-like Somes Sound. On Saturday, July 26, 2014 they are offering an all-day 15-lighthouse Grand Slam Tour. The trip will run from 9:00AM to 5:00PM and cover over 150 miles aboard the jet-powered catamaran Friendship V. Last year’s tour visited 17 island lighthouses taking in most of the lights between Bar Harbor and Rockland, Maine. Special guest lighthouse historian and author Jeremey D’Entremont will be providing fascinating human stories and history at each light. u

East Quoddy Light, photo by Michael Leonard

The Quoddy Loop Offers An Afforable, Adventurous Three Nation Vacation Experience By: Jim Harnedy

T

he Quoddy Loop provides a unique opportunity to visit and enjoy the scenic coastal and island communities of Down East Maine, the home of the Passamaquoddy Nation and the West Fundy Isles of New Brunswick. Adventures abound: nature walks, whale watching cruises, lighthouse and history tours, galleries with paintings, jewelry, pottery and sculpture by fine local artists as well as chance to enjoy a leisurely pace and refresh one’s self.

Station on Campobello Island. Passamaquoddy Bay affords nature lovers the opportunity to be entertained by eagles, porpoises and whales while cruising these pristine waters with their immense tides aboard local charter boats out of Lubec and Eastport. To arrange for an exciting adventure on the bay contact in Lubec: Downeast Charter Boat Tours – downeastcharterboattours.com or tel. (207) 733-2009 - in Eastport: Eastport Windjammers –tel. (207) 853-2500 or Fundy Breeze Charters – tel. (207) 853-4660.

Each of these three communities has its own rich history. It is believed that ancestors of current Passamaquoddy tribal members lived on the Quoddy Loop more than twelve thousand years ago. Ancient art depicting their history and culture is found in three thousand year old petroglyphs carved in rocks at a shorefront site in Machiasport. Machias which was settled in 1763, serves as the shire town for this region. The name Machias is derived from the Native American word, Mechises which means bad little falls or a bad run of water.

Fun activities do not need to be damped by a stormy day. A number of wonderful galleries can be found throughout the area. Several unique museums including Raye’s Old Stone Mustard Mill Museum in Eastport and Ganong Chocolatier Museum in St. Stephen, NB (just across from Calais, Maine) are working institutions that should not be missed on a Quoddy Loop visit.

Route 92 in Machias is Elm Street. The first stop on the trail is at “Bad Little Falls”, located just as one turns onto Route 92. Machias is derived from the Native American word Mechises which means bad little falls or a bad run of water. “Bad Little Falls Park” offers a perfect setting for a picnic and has ample parking for checking out this natural wonder. After savoring the beauty of the falls and the splendid view the park provides, one can walk up Elm Street (Route 92) a little less than .1 of a mile to Avery Street. own East Community is 100% committed to delivering a high level of care, while providing the healthcare services that match the needs of Washington County. Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Crowe, treats bone and joint problems of the upper and lower extremities. Common conditions he treats include: athletic injuries, fractures, arthritis and cumulative trauma problems such as bursitis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel and other nerve compression syndromes. Commonly performed surgeries are total reconstruction of knee, hip, and shoulder, and many other types of bone and soft tissue procedures. Many orthopedic conditions can be treated non-operatively. Even operative care can be done with less invasive techniques such as arthroscopic surgery. Since arthroscopic surgery incisions are small, the patient benefits by having a faster healing time and less chance of complications such as infection. Dr. Crowe, and Nathan Bouwkamp, NP-C, welcome new patients. Their office is located on the Hospital campus beside the Robertson building. For an appointments, call 255-0404.

The past is alive and well in Eastport

In 1818, when America was a young nation led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth, saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. At the time, both the whaling and shipbuilding industries were booming. His entrepreneurship was exactly perfect for the time and he knew that he could meet all his customers’ needs by supplying hardware, harpoons, deadeyes, canvas, alcohol, tobacco and everything else required for rigging, operating and provisioning a ship. While the original business site suffered through several fires and storms, the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976 completely devastated the facility. u
