A Note From the Artistic Director The Power of Theatre Why do we go to the theater? There is something magical about entering a room, sitting in the dark, and losing ourselves for a couple of hours as a talented cast of performers sing and dance and make us smile. So many musicals and plays do just that, and there is something very valuable in being able to escape in this way. But theatre, at times, can do much more than that. It can make us think, consider, remember, motivate, inspire, and deeply feel things. Good theater can find its way into our hearts and change us. When the NICKEL MINES script came across my desk, I read it, re-read it, re-read it again, and decided to put it away for a few days. But I couldn’t shake it. There was just something so powerful about this script and the way that this story was being told. NICKEL MINES explores the events of one tragic and fateful day in Pennsylvania, but it is much more than that. It is about faith, forgiveness, perseverance, and community. It is a new and important piece of theatre that deserves to be seen, and we at ACT of CT feel honored that our community can be some of the first audiences to witness it. NICKEL MINES was originally scheduled to be performed March 19-29, 2020 but was canceled just days before opening due to COVID. We were in our final days of rehearsal when I had to inform the cast and crew that we were closing the theater’s doors (for how long, nobody knew). To this day, that remains one of the most difficult things that I have ever had to do; stopping our rehearsal and sending this magnificent group of artists home - just one week before opening their show. It was devastating. And so, we are ecstatic to be able to have the opportunity to bring back this important and powerful new musical, and it certainly would not have been possible without the unwavering support of Ridgefield resident Anita Donofrio, who believes in this show as much as we do. Our goal at ACT of CT is to present our patrons with a wide variety of theatre each and every season: beloved classics, popular titles, lesser-known shows, and new works such as this one. This season (SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE, NICKEL MINES, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, and RENT) continues to be an exciting and fulfilling one and as always, we value you and thank you for supporting the arts and ACT of CT.

Warner Brothers hosted by Diggs, and the pair continue to develop varied projects for stage, film and television. Shannon is a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and is an adjunct lecturer at University of California Irvine. This project is dedicated to the community of Lancaster PA and those so deeply impacted. Dan Dyer (Music & Lyrics) Dan Dyer’s signature sound melds together soul, folk, and country to reveal music full of a storyteller’s lyricism, a rambler’s travails, and enough self-awareness to keep it honest. A native of Tool, TX, Dan has spent his life in the wide-open spaces of the Texas landscape. He likes to say that guitar was something he practiced “ineffectively,” and he barely stumbled through his first open mike night. But this self-effacing musician now commands audiences with that guitar, combined with the vocal strength of a gospel choir and the raw edge of a man who knows the value of hard work. Today, Dan calls the outskirts of Austin home, where he feeds his handyman tendencies and soulful nature with a plot of land framed by sky at the end of a dirt road. Tom Cuffari (Music Director / Piano / Conductor) is a versatile musician with a diverse career as a pianist, choral director and Music Director. He has prepared choruses for Josh Groban on his “Bridges” tour, which was aired on PBS, Good Morning America and the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. NICKEL MINES is his fourth production at ACT of CT.
