I Dreamed Last Night I Got On The Boat To Heaven!

Welcome to GUYS AND DOLLS - the first show of our fifth season here at ACT of CT! We are so happy that you are with us today and are grateful for your continued support. It brings all of us at ACT of CT immense joy to be able to bring such a high-level of entertain ment to our community, and I could not think of a better show to kick off our fifth season than GUYS AND DOLLS. We have not yet produced and presented a classic musical theater piece in any of our seasons, and I am excited to be able to bring to life this Tony Awardwinning favorite which has been hailed by many as “the perfect musical comedy”.

GUYS AND DOLLS opened on Broadway in 1950, and became one of Broadway’s most successful productions (originally running 1,200 performances with three subsequent Broadway revivals). The 1955 film adaptation starred Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine. GUYS AND DOLLS is based on the short stories of writer Damon Runyon (specifically Runyon’s “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown”). Runyon, who was good friends with well-known “gangsters” including Frank Costello, Bugsy Siegel and Al Capone, fictionalized and, in a sense, glamorized the colorful lives and language of “an era that lives on in our imagination: The World of Runyonland.”

GUYS AND DOLLS is, of course, a period piece; a show that is set in a very specific and particular time in history which describes life at that time. During the 1940’s, gender roles were clearly defined and the concept of political correctness was a long way away from entering the public conversation. While the show embraces many antiquated concepts, there is a reason why GUYS AND DOLLS continues to be one of the most produced musicals in theater history; the music, the witty lyrics, and a cast of characters that transports us back to another time where life was just…different. It’s fun for me to think about the fact that my grandparents were in their early twenties during the era in which GUYS AND DOLLS takes place and actually “lived” during this period of time that just seems so far away and foreign to me now. In a surprising way, I have felt a very special connection to them while directing this show, and I am proud to be able to present our production of GUYS AND DOLLS to you!

Thank you again for your support of ACT of CT!

His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hol lywood, where he spent the next eleven years working with such composers as Bur ton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include TWO SLEEPY PEO PLE, JINGLE JANGLE JINGLE, and I DON’T WANT TO WALK WITHOUT YOU. The first song for which Loesser wrote both words and music was PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS

THE AMMUNITION, written during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war included the hit songs SPRING WILL BE A LITTLE LATE THIS YEAR, A SLOW BOAT TO CHINA, and the 1949 Oscar-winning song BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE. In 1948 Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. The new musical, which starred Ray Bolger, was called Where’s Charlie? and was a hit. This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influ ential and successful Guys and Dolls in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, The Most Happy Fella, adapted from Sidney Howard’s play, They Knew What They Wanted. This impres sive score contains over 30 musical num bers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios and choral numbers. In 1960 he provided the score and was co-li brettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-win ning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during out-of-town try-outs.

JO SWERLING (Book) Born in Russia in 1897, Jo Swerling was a playwright, screen writer and vaudeville sketch writer. Mr. Swerling’s long career began as a reporter and feature writer in New York and Chicago.

ABE BURROWS (Book) After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a successful radio script writer and writer/ performer of musical parody numbers. His first Broadway libretto was Guys and Dolls, co-written with Jo Swerling, with a score by Frank Loesser. Among the musicals for which he provided librettos are Make A Wish, Can-Can and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Say, Darling, and How to Succeed in Business Without Real ly Trying (which he also directed; score by Frank Loesser). His non-musical plays in

Nissan of Yorktown Heights is proud to support ACT of Connecticut and helping to bring the best of Broadway into ourlocal community.

We REDISCOVERED what it means to be “On Broadway” and dance at SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ.

We UNPLUGGED from distractions of the real world and our “Poor Unfortunate Souls” were revitalized when sung by Heidi Blickenstaff,

We REMINDED OURSELVES about the power of forgiveness through the groundbreaking performance of “You Were The First” at NICKEL MINES, We REIMAGINED a classic with Daniel C. Levine in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and asked ourselves “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” even more,

We FELT “You Oughta Know” just how PLUGGED-IN ACT is with the Tony Award-Winning brilliance of Lauren Patten, and

We WELCOMED “Seasons of Love” to inspire and captivate us as RENT dazzled in the spring!

From a “Bushel and a Peck” to “Luck be a Lady”, we are BLESSED to have “Guys and Dolls” to kick off a new year of date nights and phenomenal talent right here in our town.
