FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK PREPARING YOUR HOLIDAY SECURIT Y As with any time you are planning to leave your home for a few days or weeks, you need to remember the importance of home security. The last thing you want after a wonderful break away is to find your house in disarray and your personal property stolen. If you intend to be away for an extended period, it is a good idea to let your neighbours know the property will be vacant and give them numbers to call in case of any emergency. If you are a tenant you should also inform your Property Manager if you will be away for more than a few days. Some other practical suggestions include: • Double-check that all windows are closed and locked and that deadlocks are activated on the doors. • L ock all external areas such as garages and sheds. • Set alarm systems if you have them. • Put valuables in a safety deposit box, or leave them with friends or family who have a safe. • Remove the spare key from its ‘secret’ hiding place. • A sk a neighbour or friend to collect the mail and keep your letterbox free of ‘junk’ mail. Consider getting the post office to hold mail if you will be away for a while. • Cancel newspapers and any other home deliveries. • Set timers for lights to come on for a couple of hours as they would if you were at home. • A sk a neighbour to park a car in your driveway every now and then. • Put some old clothes or linen on the clothesline. • Organise for someone to maintain the yard if you think the property will have an unlived-in look while you are away

Remember your insurance – make sure it is up to date! Tenants, in particular, are at risk as they are much less likely than homeowners to have home contents insurance. Many tenants assume that the landlord’s insurance will cover their belongings - it doesn’t, so they need to have their own insurance. Did you know Rockingham City Council offer a free Holiday Watch service with their SmartWatch team? The SmartWatch team can keep an eye on your house not only if you are going away during the Christmas holidays, but also for travel or work for more than one night. They will look for signs of damage to property, suspicious activities or incidents that occur. They will report any observations or findings to you and/or the police. Contact the City of Rockingham for more information. With the Christmas holidays upon us, many people will be thinking about taking a well-earned break.
