From the Director’s desk. australia takes on the 2016 rio olympics! This August, australia’s finest athletes and sporting champions will come together to compete against the world! Rio de Janeiro will have the honour of being the first South American city to host an Olympic Games when Rio 2016 hits Brazil’s second largest city this month. Out of a total 10,500 competitors, we have 418 athletes across 26 sports who will represent Australia at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Team comprises 271 rookies (64.83%) with the youngest athlete, footballer Ellie Carpenter, at just age 16. Grandmother, Mary Hanna aged 61, will be our eldest competing athlete and off to her 5th Games as part of the equestrian team!

AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE!

With the games wrapping up the first week of competition, the Australian team have well and truly shown their worth! Bringing home our first gold of the games, we saw Mack Horton scrape into first place in the mens 400m Freestyle Swimming Final, and just a few minutes later the Aussie girls smashed the world record for our second gold in the 4x100m Swimming Relay. Also adding to our already growing gold tally, Catherine Skinner placed first in the Women’s Shooting and our rugby girls had a historic win by defeating New Zealand to become our first ever gold medalists for Rugby Sevens. Bringing our medal count up even higher, we’ve received 4 bronze so far in Archery, Diving, Swimming!

WHAT TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR

It’s only been a week but we’ve already seen our fair share of laughter, tears and severely broken bones. With the first few days of qualifiers and heats behind us, it’s time for a majority of the finals to come together which is where the real excitement starts! Be sure to catch the Rowing, Badminton, Water Polo, both the Men’s & Women’s Road Cycling Finals and definitely keep your eyes fixed on the Australian Basketball Teams who are all doing amazing things on the court. Major highlight events to watch in the upcoming week will be Usain Bolt in his quest to be crowned three-peat champion by winning the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay for the third games in a row. Also keep watch for the Gymnastics when three-time reigning world champion Simone Biles for Team USA is favourite to win the Women’s All-Round Final. And lastly to mark in your calendar, Brazil are set to defend their home turf in the Beach Volleyball and will hopefully make it to the finals late next week!
