WHY WALK? The Scotiabank AIDS Walk For Life Toronto raises muchneeded funds for the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). Last year participants raised over $385,000 to support ACT’s vital programs and services. This year our goal is $400,000, which will help ACT continue to deliver its current programs and develop new ways to meet the needs of our diverse communities. The number of people living with HIV (including AIDS) in Canada continues to rise, from an estimated 64,000 in 2008 to 71,300 in 2011 (an 11.4% increase). Almost 25% of those with HIV do not know they have it. Over 20,000 people have tested positive for HIV in Toronto since HIV testing began in late 1985. This represents 65% of all HIV-positive tests reported in Ontario. ACT provides a variety of programs and services that improve the health and wellbeing of men, women and youth in our community living with HIV/AIDS. We also help to prevent new HIV infections through community outreach, education and health promotion.

“ I’M GROWING MUTTONCHOPS FOR AIDS.”

WHAT’S NEW? We’re flipping this event upside down! This year we walk a new route, specially created to honour the Village and important people, organizations and spaces around it that have been key in Toronto’s fight against HIV/AIDS. They include Glad Day Book Shop, The Canadian LGBT Archives, Casey House, The Phoenix, Fife House, The Toronto People With AIDS Foundation and ACT.

2 An audio tour is available to download and listen to during the Walk to learn more about the contributions of our community. You’ll also be able to enjoy several theatrical activations along the Walk, extending the fun we had with this year’s PSA. Visit the event schedule page on aidswalktoronto.ca or the Walk social media pages for the download link.

WALK ROUTE This year’s Walk will also take you through an opportunity to participate in a live legacy art project, the result of which will hang in the offices of ACT. Check out community members and vendors throughout The Village beginning at 11 a.m. Stop by The Shaun Proulx Media booth and purchase a memorial candle created by Wick’d Wax Creations to remember a special person. All proceeds go to AIDS Walk For Life. Award-winning comic, radio and TV personality Richard Ryder hosts our pre-walk celebration at a new location between O’Grady’s and Crews & Tango. Watch this space for details of the new Walk Route. This route was specially created to commemorate the work of AIDS service organizations, their volunteers, and of course, those lost to, and living with, HIV/AIDS. The Route will include the opportunity to participate in a Legacy Art Project to mark 25 Years of The Scotiabank AIDS Walk For Life Toronto. After the Walk, it’s The Red Party, featuring 25 Years of Anthems and pop-up performances until 6 pm. Wait until you see the fun we have lined up for you, and as the sky darkens, look to the south, and up for a special final surprise. Remember, this year the dress code is RED. Hats, jeans, makeup, hair, tees… just go RED – its the new black, for a day.

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFT PROGRAMS Dramatically increase your fundraising potential and achieve a bigger goal sooner! Many employers encourage their employees to contribute to charitable organizations by creating matching gift programs. Through these programs, a company will match all or part of your donation to the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto / AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT), increasing the impact of your contribution to the cause. How do I apply for matching gift program funds? To secure corporate matching, investigate the policies and requirements at your company as soon as possible. Your company may require that you complete forms to apply for the matching gift program. The length of time required by your company to process and approve your request may vary and could take from a just few days to several weeks or even months. Who do I ask about matching gift programs where I work? The administrator of matching programs may vary from company to company. We suggest asking the most senior person you know in your Human Resources Department.

MORE THAN $40,000 RAISED AT LAST YEAR’S SCOTIABANK AIDS WALK FOR LIFE TORONTO WAS FROM CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS.

7. Be enthusiastic and confident and able to share some facts about HIV/AIDS and how ACT makes a difference (our website is a great resource to help answer questions) 8. Get creative and be original. Throw a themed event or a party and charge an entry fee. Talk it up. 9. Keep it simple. There is a reason why bake sales and car washes are successful. 10. Have fun.
