For staff members this will not be the maiden visit to southeast Asia, but this beginning outreach of 2012 will mark the first ever Actuality Media outreach to travel beyond the realm of Latin America. For students looking for travel and adventure, Thailand is a perfect blend of proximity and affordability. Chiang Mai's metropolitan area has a population of over one million people, and the city itself is a mix of historical relics, such as grand walls and temples dating back to the founding of the city over 700 years ago, and modern day attractions like malls, ziplines and clubs. For Thai locals, however, life is not fun and games. In and around Chiang Mai there exists poverty, environmental destruction, lack of resources, and many other problems that plague developing nations. Many good changemakers have taken up residence in the area with operations ranging from Buddhist-centered environmental protection, to community development programs that strive to give locals the power to survive, to Asian elephant sanctuaries. Actuality Media student crews will lodge in tourist housing and work out of Base Camp, the mobile office of Actuality Media. Each student crew will go through rigorous lessons on the aspects of making a short documentary as they begin to research their subject organization. Crews will then write, shoot and edit their media, completing a short documentary before leaving Thailand. Besides making a new group of friends that are going into the film industry, students will return home with a great piece of media with their name on it, and a fantastic story to tell about a changemaker doing great things in Thailand. Actuality Media is a social enterprise that creates positive media. Actuality Media outreaches take top students to developing countries to produce short documentaries and other media for changemakers working to solve chronic social problems.
