ACUI REGION V UW-MILWAUKEE OCTOBER 27-29
Milwaukee Swan Song I’m so pumped to head to Milwaukee! This will be my last Region V Conference as a part of the Regional Leadership Team, and I’m determined to make the most of every moment of my time with my Regional Leadership Team colleagues, who have become mentors, collaborators, and, most impactfully, some of my dearest friends. My position as communications coordinator is unique in that I also sit in on all the Conference Planning Team meetings as well. This means two things. First, I’ve learned that this Conference Planning Team comprises some of the most fun and dedicated folks in the region. I’ve had a blast hanging out with them, and you will too. Second, I can tell you with confidence that this Conference Planning Team has worked hard to make this conference outstanding for each one of you. This special edition of Fun in Flyover Country will give you a little preview of all you have to look forward to in Milwaukee, so go grab another cup of coffee, and then settle in with my last newsletter to Region V (for now). Frederick Edwards Jr. Frederick Edwards Jr. expresses his concern about modern-day racial discrimination and how it has affected so many lives, including his own. Hear his experiences of struggle and resiliency as a person fighting against discrimination in all forms. Edwards will provide you a few ways to combat racial discrimination. Edwards’ focus has been on leadership empowerment and strengthening communities by being the role models. Edwards is a motivational, spoken word artist from North Minneapolis. The things he has seen speak through him with the energy he provides. He is passionate about helping others find their inner greatness and potential. He’s spoken with hundreds of college, high school, and middle school students, and provides testimonies of struggle and resiliency. With nine brothers and sisters, Edwards is the tenth and last child. His mother had a .0001% chance of becoming pregnant after her ninth child. Edwards was that .0001%.

Tiki torches at a white supremacist rally at the University of Virginia, riots on the campus of University of California–Berkeley related to a controversial speaker, state governments and colleges contemplating free speech legislation and policies, debates over safe spaces on campus, frequent campus bias incidents... Not since the 1960s and 70s have our campuses seen protests and divisive rhetoric like we are experiencing today. This panel of union and student affairs veterans will explore these issues, share different campus approaches, and discuss how the college union can continue to meet our mission as community centers welcoming all while remaining a vital marketplace of ideas that exposes students to viewpoints and experiences different than their own.
