Government goes to war with Google over net censorship The Sydney Morning Herald March 30 2010 The Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, has launched a stinging attack on Google and its credibility in response to the search giant's campaign against the government's internet filtering policy. In an interview on ABC Radio last night, Senator Conroy also said he was unaware of complaints the Obama administration said it had raised with the government over the policy. Australia Getting More Social Online as Facebook Leads and Twitter Grows Nielsen March 23 2010 With Facebook leading the way and Twitter activity on the rise, Australians are rapidly increasing their participation in social media, content sharing and brand interaction. Nearly four in five (78%) of Australia’s nine million social media users sent or shared a photo in the past year and nearly three quarters (74%) sent or shared a link. The biggest increases in social media usage were reading and posting on Twitter, reading wikis and engaging with brands and organizations via social media. Sears, Kmart tweeting more than 7,000 jobs The Chicago Tribune March 18 2010 Parent company posts more than 7,000 jobs on social networking site Sears Holding Corp. said Wednesday that more than 7,000 job openings at Sears and Kmart will be posted on Twitter, a move experts say is a way to advertise and market its brands to 18- to 34-yearolds, the mainstay of the social networking site. Google and Partners Seek TV Foothold The New York Times March 17 2010 Google and Intel have teamed with Sony to develop a platform called Google TV to bring the Web into the living room through a new generation of televisions and set-top boxes. The move is an effort by Google and Intel to extend their dominance of computing to television, an arena where they have little sway. For Sony, which has struggled to retain a pricing and technological advantage in the competitive TV hardware market, the partnership is an effort to get a leg up on competitors. With so many mobile phone movie apps, it’s easy to find what’s playing at nearby theaters and even purchase tickets right from your mobile phone, but then you still have to get a paper ticket from the dispenser or the ticket agent. CIOs speak out on cloud email Delimiter.com.au March 15 2010 Australian chief information officers have spoken out about their experiences after installing cloudbased email solutions from Google and Microsoft as opposed to systems hosted within the company. Financial services group Mortgage Choice last year switched about 1000 users from its existing Lotus Notes platform to Gmail. The group's CIO Neil Rose-Innes has been positive about the company's move, although he admitted cloud email might not be for everyone.
