A HOUSE WITHIN LIMITED MEANS This house, for a specific ‘client’ on a given site in Providence is under 1200 sq.ft. The construction takes place in the shadowed areas of the small lot and incorporates the courtyard and roof planes as outdoor living and garden spaces. The house accommodates a mushroom growing facility, located underground to maintain a constant temperature and humidity.

HOUSE WITHIN LIMITED MEANS STUDIO RISD 2009

This project proposed a facility in an under-used railway-owned lot that would dedicate itself to both the dirty work of industrial recycling and salvage in conjunction with the work of a community garden and park. The simultaneity would occur in section with the disparate programs occurring on overlaid strata.

The reuse of the highway structure lays a committed framework for a high intensity agricultural roof over the recycling facility. The roof plan is thus defined by the geometry of the steel beams and makes for a meandering park pathway over the sloping structure.

Given a large program in a large city with a small site, this project is about negotiating the specific needs of each program. The shifts in size and shape of the floor plates are determined by program. which also informs each floor’s atitude toward the street, giving the building a particular ‘posture.’ The circulation for this public building is outdoors, embedded between the two layers of the structural exoskeleton.

SCUBA CENTER The given program for this second core studio was a scuba diving and education center. On a waterfront site the divers would descend into the shoreline and swim through inter-connected underground chambers. Each conical shaft brought light down into the spaces through water-filled diving rooms or skylight shafts.

GEOMETRY (left) This early assignment was aimed at challengin skills in representaion and spacial cognition. The measured drawing depicts the solving of the puzzle pictured below. (above) These models show the system developed out of a study in sheet material geometry, which informed the conceptual traveler’s center shown in the drawing above.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES STUDIO RISD 2007

CUBE The project shown here was an exercise in formal exploration within a 60’x 60’x 60’ envelope. The space was designed with an idea of monumentality in mind. The translucent angular shafts reach from floor to ceiling, representing solidified beams of light. The space around the towers is full of bamboo scaffold, platforms, ladders, and stairs for human occupation.

DESIGN AS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT This design-build wntersession studio took place in Costa Rica. We went as volunteers to design and build a replacement bleacher stand in the public football (soccer) field of Cocles. We took the opportunity both to design a structure that would provide community gathering space beyond field seating, and to engage the community in the process. We worked primarily with bamboo for the structure. The whole engagement was very much a group effort and my role was that of design consultant, mediator and builder.

MANUAL AND DIGITAL REPRESENTATION

Collage Recently completed on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia: this 392m2 private residence includes pottery and painting studios, and a lookout tower. Urban comforts are provided by the drain-down combi system, which furnishes the radiant in-floor heat and domestic hot-water. This system incorporates both an in-hearth fireplace and a propane boiler backup. Photovoltaic roof panels provide most of the needed power with a propane generator backup. The self-sufficient power and heating systems are architecturally integrated and were major drivers in the design.

MONTGOMERY WOOD ARCHITECT 2004-09

All work on these pages was done for Montgomery Wood Architect. Here is shown site analysis, concept development, construction documentation, and publicity. I was equally deployed to do CAD drawings and graphics. Shown here are construction drawings from the Roberts Creek Residence (opposite), site analysis documentation with concept proposals for Gabriola Island cottage (left), and programming diagrams for the Page Residence (above).

Nowadays, dear. Installation: paper model staircase from table to cornice, A Collection of Fallacies.

Plumes painting. oil on maple

Grumpy girl painting, oils on maple ply with gold leaf, 2’x 4,5’ This was an installation at the WRKS DVSN gallery wherein I built site specific paper model staircases, arranged lighting installations, and displayed collections of items, photographs, drawings and paintings. I was interested in exploring nostalgia and renewal. The WRKS DVSN gallery was an artist run space operated by myself and some fellow artists in 20056, For the final show we exhibited our own work. The renovation and operation of the gallery space was an incredible learning opportunity.
