A HOUSE WITHIN LIMITED MEANS This house, for a specific ‘client’ on a given site in Providence is under 1200 sq.ft. The construction takes place in the shadowed areas of the small lot and incorporates the courtyard and roof planes as outdoor living and garden spaces. The house accommodates a mushroom growing facility, located underground to maintain a constant temperature and humidity.

HOUSE WITHIN LIMITED MEANS STUDIO RISD 2009

This project proposed a facility in an under-used railway-owned lot that would dedicate itself to both the dirty work of industrial recycling and salvage in conjunction with the work of a community garden and park. The simultaneity would occur in section with the disparate programs occurring on overlaid strata.

The reuse of the highway structure lays a committed framework for a high intensity agricultural roof over the recycling facility. The roof plan is thus defined by the geometry of the steel beams and makes for a meandering park pathway over the sloping structure.

Given a large program in a large city with a small site, this project is about negotiating the specific needs of each program. The shifts in size and shape of the floor plates are determined by program. which also informs each floor’s atitude toward the street, giving the building a particular ‘posture.’ The circulation for this public building is outdoors, embedded between the two layers of the structural exoskeleton.
