A Part of Ada’s History: Goose Hill Many times, while driving down Highland, I would often see the beautiful red brick mansion on the hill and wonder. What was it? Did it belong to the school? How does one even get there? It always seemed to me as if it was something out of a book—there, yet unreal. When I would ask others about it, they would know either nothing or provide me with the misinformation that the school once owned it. It wasn’t until recently that I learned the truth about the estate named Goose Hill. P.A. Norris, who owned all the land from Arlington to Kerr Lab Road, and donated the property for both Norris Stadium and Wintersmith Park, built Goose Hill in 1912. At the time it was constructed, the house would be out in the country. Norris’s friends would ask him why he chose to build a house in the middle of nowhere instead of in town, close to business and friends. He would respond that it was just his preference. They all called him a silly goose, thus he named his estate “Goose Hill.” The property stayed in the Norris family for almost 95 years until purchased by local contractor, Don Walker. Walker, who has much more than a passing interest in both architecture and history, worked diligently to return the six-bedroom, five-bath home to its former glory. A fireplace had been bricked up, so he restored it. Lode bearing walls had been removed, so he had a 650 pound steel beam placed in the wall to support the top two floors and fix the considerable structural damage that had occurred

by: Sunnie Daniels

over the course of almost a century. Walker has tried to keep everything as it was when it was built, except for, of course, a modernized kitchen. When the house was originally built, the ground floor had a kitchen (manned by servants), a dining room for the servants, and a children’s dining room (which is now the den). Also on the ground floor is a spacious entry way and large formal dining room, complete with chandelier. When Walker purchased the house, the chandelier was included and still hangs above the dining room table. One bedroom was located on the first floor and is known as the “Bishop’s Bedroom” because the Norris family, being prominent Episcopalians, would have the Bishop stay at their house on his visits to Ada, and always in this room. The top two floors are filled with bedrooms, bathrooms, and porches. The ballroom is also located on the second floor. Being in this house, one can almost envision the grand galas that must have taken place—dresses swirling to the melodies of live music, further parties being planned, business deals being brokered. This house makes the imagination come alive with images that belong in a classic film. However, this is not a work of fiction, but rather a part of Ada’s history. This town is filled with century old homes, each one telling it’s own story about its inhabitants, our past, and even our present. They can open our eyes to a different time as we look to our own future. ■ www.adahub.com • 7

Common Sense Investing Founded on Academic Research Have you ever had a friend, neighbor, or financial advisor recommend an investment that will “considerably increase your return/interest with seemingly no additional risk”? If so, I would like to remind you of a simple investment truth: “Risk and Return Are Related”. If Investment “A” is expected to earn 2% and Investment “B” is expected to earn 6%, then “B” is exposing you to higher potential risk(s) than “A”. Does this mean one is better than the other? Absolutely not, however, it does mean Investment “B” must reward investors with a higher expected return in order to compensate them for taking the additional risk(s). Be aware that there is a Risk/Return tradeoff for any investment you make. If you hang on to this simple truth, you will be more likely to pursue your long term financial goals with greater success.

The Right Fit. Brown’s Shoe Fit by: Mindy Wood

While the company remains conservative, they’re not behind technology. They offer Aetrex orthopedic technology, a machine that digitally scans the bottom of both feet to determine supporting inserts. “It shows your pressure points, how you stand, where you’re putting all your weight and it will also digitally tell us the length of your arch. What most people don’t realize is that just because your foot is a size ten it doesn’t mean the length of your arch is a size ten. Usually its not the same. When you buy a size ten shoe, it’s going to accommodate a size ten arch. The inserts, available for high fashion, athletic and casual wear, do more than just cushion the feet but offer a ripple effect of benefits for the whole body. “In my opinion everything starts with your feet. If a person has bad knees, in my opinion, it started with their feet; either wearing the wrong shoes, doing the wrong workout, being in the military and wearing the wrong shoes. Same thing with bad hips, bad back, even headaches can be caused by wearing the wrong shoes that aren’t giving you shock absorbency. The technology works so well

that people come back to buy it again and tell their friends and family to do the same. I now have foot doctors sending their patients in.â€? Matheny offers unique shoes, keeping ahead of seasonal trends while carrying staple and classic lines that customers enjoy. Joseph Siebel, Johnston & Murphy, Merrell, and Doc Martins are well known for their quality and durability. Women enjoy hard to find, unique selections. “I purchase shoes at market at least two to three times a year. I ask the sales rep, ‘who else are you selling these to? Is a chain department store going to sell these?’ You have to separate yourself by not carrying the same shoes customers see in every window.â€? The real secret to success is Matheny’s definition of customer service. “You might think you have to take that phone call or put that freight away but if you’re not selling shoes to that customer then there’s not going to be phone calls to take and freight to put away. The customer is number one. If you’re not selling shoes then nothing else in the store is going to matter. â€? â–

In cozy communities where Main Street still thrives as a center of business, long standing stores like Brown’s Shoe Fit Company are as American as apple pie. The 100 year old full service shoe company company will celebrate 40 years in Ada. Owner Gunar Matheny is optimistic about the future. Driven to offer the best customer service, Matheny said “behind the times service is an unshakable foundation. “That’s why we have stood the test of time. We have 80 stores and it’s why we’ve lasted while other companies haven’t. Communities are always on a roller coaster, whether it’s an oil boom or manufacturers shutting down but we’ve always stuck to offering the best possible service and the best possible quality shoes. Ada residents chose Brown Shoe Fit Company for seven years in the Ada Evening News Reader’s Choice Award as the number one place to buy shoes. “Even though we’re the only shoe store in Ada, there are about twenty shops who sell shoes so it says a lot, I think, said Matheny.

Altaring your Idols - after

adam hall

What in the world is the picture of the flaming stump?

Adam was born in Ada in 1983 to his parents, Tim and Paula Hall. He grew up in Stonewall where he attended school, then moved on to East Central where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. As a teen, Hall had watched his dad take ordinary tree stumps and turn them into art with a few hours of work, so he was excited to see what he could do. Over the past 12 years Hall has carved bears, cacti, roosters, fish, eagles, a giant cowboy (which lives on Kerr Lab Road) and several abstract and symbolic pieces. He is able to achieve greater detail by staining and using a torch to burn in colors and highlights. Hall always applies a coat of varnish to prevent cracking and to prolong the life of his sculptures. “It’s not a full time job, I just like to do it in my free time or when I get a specific order,” Hall says. Besides the excitement of holding a tool that spins metal teeth around that can demolish a tree in seconds, why carve stumps? One of Hall’s professors in college continually asked the question, “Why? Why do you do this? What does this work of art say?” At the time, Hall’s answer was, “I don’t know...for a grade I guess”. His reason now is to create something with meaning. Hall is a graphic designer for The Gospel Station and a part-time youth pastor who teaches his students to use their crafts and talents to uplift the name of the Lord. Hall has found some difficulty in moving from the “mountain man” style of chainsaw carving to making meaningful pieces of art. “People really seem to like the folksy animal carvings. They’re fun to make, but to me don’t serve a purpose; so I’ve decided that in 2012, I’ll give half the price of each carving to foreign missions. I’m determined to make a difference one way or another,” Hall said

happily. Being able to do this has really given Hall the feeling he is finally answering the professor’s question of, “Why do you do this?”, and most importantly, he feels like he is answering the call God has on his life. You are all probably wondering at this point, “What in the world is the picture of the flaming stump?” Hall explains in his own words. “The Altaring your Idols piece begins like a totem pole of contemporary America, and was inspired by Judges Chapter 6. On it are five symbols, which represent separate but intertwined types of evil; things that seem easily avoidable and obviously wrong, but are taking root in culture and setting themselves up as idols. They are: guns (violence), money (greed), power (or technology), music (blending the others into a lifestyle), and sex as an industry and addiction. My purpose for this carving was to re-state the obvious, to call things for what they are and to ask viewers, myself included, to evaluate the influence that we have allowed these idols to have on our lives. Each symbol will hold a different meaning to each person, and each discovered meaning will have to be dealt with on an individual basis. My purpose is to encourage self evaluation and to promote the courage to burn down the things that own you. To walk, you have to first stand up and take a step, so let’s move forward.” To sum it all up, Hall quotes Colossians 3:17, “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” If you are interested in seeing more of Hall’s work or would like to make an order yourself, email him at adamhall1983@yahoo.com or see his facebook page www.facebook. com/AdamHall1983. ■

any people, when growing up, have dreams of becoming rock stars. They even manufacture entire lines of video games based around this fact. Of these people, though, very few take the time to actually hone their musical skills and develop a style that reflects a part of them. All they see is the money, the fame, and the lifestyle. This, however, is just the opposite for the members of Running From Tomorrow. The four members of the local band, Justin Logan on guitar and vocals, Logan Lewis on lead guitar, Caleb Bonar on bass, and Chantz Houston on the drums, or “thundermakers” as he likes to call them, are each dedicated musicians in their own right who have been incredibly lucky to have found each other. It began over a year ago. Logan and Chantz had been in bands together before and one day Logan and Justin started jamming. They meshed so well that the three of them got together and wrote a song on the first night. They 14 • www.adahub.com

by: Lauren Meyer

then brought Caleb in to play bass, which wasn’t even his first instrument, yet he was willing to confront the challenge in order to become a better musician. Though they may play an occasional cover when they do shows at Vintage 22, the majority of their sets are all original. Listening to them talk, it is difficult to discern if they are more passionate about playing music or writing it. Each song is deeply personal to them. They reflect the changes in their lives and the lessons they have learned. As Justin describes, there was a period of time where they went “off the beaten path” as a band, but they have since moved forward, both as individuals and as a band, creating quite a few undertones of redemption in their music. Each song has an emotional tie—a specific meaning to the band, which might be one of the reasons why it comes so easy for them. They never struggle to write their own material. The song “Take Me Away,” for instance, is, as Justin states, “A picture of the band…where the heart is for us.” This was the first song that Chantz ever wrote. It’s about, “Being in a crazy place in a crazy

world, looking for something to rescue you and take you away.” For these four musicians, that thing is music. When they play, everything else goes away. It is their relief, their remedy, and their sanity. This might be one reason why, despite the different musical styles of the four members, everything fit together, “like puzzle pieces,” from the very beginning. They give their music everything—all their intensity, passion, and power—in order to make their instruments speak as clearly as the lyrics. Even though they have done many shows in Ada, and are recording their first studio quality EP (which will be available in early February), they don’t seem to have the dreams of rock stars. They want to play music and that’s it. Perhaps they’ll get a major record deal one day and tour the world; even if that happens, though, they still look forward thinking of family and stability. Though they may be “running from tomorrow,” they are also looking towards tomorrow. So check out their facebook page or email justinmlogan@gmail.com for more information. ■

Accomplishing Your New Year’s Resolutions! I’m glad to see my readers made it safely into 2012, which I’m hoping is a year that brings everyone much joy and happiness. Those of us, that don’t believe the hype or the Mayan calendar that the world is ending in 2012, are probably in the process of setting New Years Resolutions right now. I’m sure I’m like most of the readers, who set these every year and fail to achieve them. This month, I plan to help all of you and myself with not only setting New Years Resolutions, but also how to achieve them. Hopefully, by this time next year we will be setting even loftier resolutions since the ones we set now were so easy to achieve.

of 160.” This resolution is realistic, measurable and while the overall goal may be lofty, it doesn’t expect unrealistic results in a short period of time. When setting resolutions, it may be helpful to develop a plan to accomplish each resolution. It should include baby steps, which will help you achieve the ultimate goal. These baby steps will help reduce burnout and frustration. Finally, don’t set so many resolutions that you overload yourself and get overwhelmed before you start. If you only have three resolutions and you accomplish two by May, set new ones then. It doesn’t take a new calendar year to decide to make changes in your life.

Setting Resolutions The first step to achieving your resolutions is setting the right ones. Resolutions need to be well thought out and be a goal that you actually want to accomplish. It’s hard to be motivated to see a resolution through if you’re not excited about accomplishing it. Resolutions also need to be realistic, achievable, and measurable. A good resolution would be “To eat healthy and work out, so that I can lose 3-5 pounds each month, until I reach my goal weight

Accomplishing Resolutions Only a low percentage of people actually achieve their resolutions, in fact most, give up in a few weeks or months. Often times we start out guns blazing trying to achieve our resolutions and once we hit a roadblock, no matter how tiny, it stops all progress. Setbacks don’t have to end your progress. Simply learn from your mistake and use it to move forward. Telling others about your resolutions will also help you reach them. These people can

help act as cheerleaders when you’re unmotivated and help you keep moving forward. While working on your resolution, hold yourself accountable and track your progress. This will help you see what areas still need improvement and where you’re doing great. When you accomplish part of your resolution, reward yourself. For example, reward yourself for losing 15 pounds with a round of golf at your favorite golf course. Have an even bigger reward, like a new set of clubs, for when you accomplish the entire resolution. This gives you something to look forward to and is an extra incentive beside the resolution to achieve your goals. With some careful planning and motivation, I think we will all be able to achieve our realistic New Years Resolutions in 2012. I wish you the best of luck and hope that I’m nearly as successful as I know you’ll be. If you have questions or article ideas, submit them to AskCharlie@sbcglobal. net. ■

A

n eleven year old child in America without an ipod or cell phone would claim to be living in poverty, and they would be right according to the definition we have of poverty. pov-er-ty: the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions (Merriam-Webster). Poverty looks and feels a little different within the rural villages in Malawi, Africa. Children are hungry, lacking clean water, stricken by A.I.D.S and in many cases orphaned. Gary Jamar, Pastor of Morris Memorial Baptist Church in Ada, is doing his part to meet the needs of these kids in a big way. Jamar was at a Promise Keeper’s Conference in August of 2006 in Dallas, TX. The speaker was talking about the time Peter walked on water (Matthew 14:22-33), and the challenge was to “get out of the boat”. Jamar walked down front to pray, and as he knelt down he began to see the little faces he had seen with his eyes, but never with the eyes of his heart. Jamar knew at that moment that his step out of the boat was towards the continent of Africa. Jamar’s calling was solidified even further when he had a dream in November of 2006. In his dream he describes seeing a young boy 18 • www.adahub.com

walking toward him on a dusty road in Africa. The boy, in a torn and dirty white shirt, looked up at Jamar and said, “Please come help me”. He didn’t quite know at that moment exactly what he would be doing, but he knew he had to take that first step, so he did. In January of 2007, Malawi Orphan MinistrieS, MOMS, was born. The Oklahoma Non-Profit Organization gained it’s 501C3 Public Charity from the IRS in a record breaking 13 days. Jamar was confident that God’s hand was on this with things happening so smoothly. The next step was to establish a board of directors which consists of, Rue Scott, Jon Jamar, Kenny Harrison and a few more pastors. Scott and Jamar made their first trip to see what could be done in 2008. Their local contact was a man named Fletcher and he led them to a remote village named Nansembe, where they set up the first feeding center at a local church. They went back in 2009 to set up the second feeding center in a village called Cholo, which is in a region that has been widely affected by the AIDS pandemic. A few months later, the third feeding center was established in Soche. MOMS feeds an average of 300 kids one meal a day,

and most kids are orphans. These feeding centers are just the start of what MOMS is out to accomplish. In July of 2010 the organization bought 15.8 acres of beach front property in Malawi with contributions from three donors. The first structure was completed on the property this year and the plans for a fourth feeding center and indigenous housing for 48 AIDS orphans is in the works right now. MOMS is supported by individuals and Jamar re-marks, “God is going to use a few hearts to touch many hearts”. If you would like more information or to learn how you can help, visit their website at www.malawikids.com or email Gary Jamar at malawiorphanministries@gmail. com. When asked about the impact of being involved with MOMS, Jamar says, “It made me learn that I am responsible to be a part of the solution for everything I see”. What have you seen lately? Are you striving to be a part of the solution? ■ Photos by Michael Davis
