Fall is in the air! Football season is here and all of my favorite TV shows are back in full swing! But more importantly the Ada Hub Christmas issue is just around the corner! Yes, that’s right I’m already talking about Christmas. We plan to put together an issue packed with some great holiday stories and plenty of local businesses to help you find all of your gifts right here in town! Grandpa tried to come down the chimney... Your aunt dresses up like Santa every year... Whatever it may be, if you have a great holiday story to share, contact us by phone or email and you just might see it in our Christmas issue! (Look on the page to the left for contact information.)

We also would like to encourage all of you proud parents out there to submit your “cute kid halloween photos for next month’s “about town section. Send the photos in no later than October 20th. I know that’s a little before halloween, so they will have to get dressed up a little early. What kid is going to complain about that!

hook line & sinker fishing is more

by: Melanie Phillips Clemens

than a hobby by: Roy Deering

A lot of Oklahomans like to fish. Some hit the water every time they get a chance, taking advantage of the peace and solitude to “get away from things” for a while. But for Stewart Ryan, fishing is a lot more than just a way to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. It’s a sport that has kept him on the water most weekends for the past 20 years and has earned him a good deal of money along the way. Yes, he sometimes gets paid to go fishing. “I’ve been fishing all my life, like a lot of other guys from around here,” said the Latta graduate. “But it’s a lot more than a hobby for me, because I love tournament fishing. A lot of guys fish to relax, but I can tell you tournament fishing is not relaxing. It’s very competitive, and that’s what I love about it.” Longtime member and current vice president of the Ada Bassmasters Club, Ryan spends three weekends a month fishing in tournaments across Oklahoma from the middle of February through mid-October. During this past year, Ryan has been honored by the Oklahoma Bass Federation as the State Champion, and he was also named Angler of the Year by the Ada club. Club members fish tournaments from

Grand Lake in northeastern Oklahoma to Hugo lake in the far southeastern corner of the state. Although he’s not a true “professional” fisherman (he has a full-time job as a building contractor), Ryan has made his share of money and won a few trophies along the way. “I’ve won some money and a few trophies, but so have the other guys in the club,” Ryan said. “We all love to fish, and we spend a lot of our time and money doing it, but we do it just because we love to fish. It’s what we’d rather do than just about anything else.” Those “other” guys include about 20 local men who make up the Ada Bassmasters Club, formed in 1990. Johnny Babb is the president, with Ryan serving as vice president. Chris Tarron is treasurer and Mike Morgan serves as secretary and Larry Carter is the tournament director. The local club hosts one local tournament a month, on such lakes as Texoma and Arbuckle. In addition to the honors he’s received on a state and local basis this past year, Ryan has also taken home some nice paychecks from time to time – one time winning nearly $5,000 for a weekend of fishing. He’s had numerous chances to become a “full-time” professional

fisherman, but said other priorities had to come first. “I love to fish, and it would be nice sometimes to have the sponsor support and to fish for a living,” Ryan said. “But that would mean I’d be gone all the time, fishing all over the country, and I’ve got a family and kids and watching them grow up and being there to go to their ballgames is a lot more important to me than being a professional fisherman on the tour.” Ryan has one longtime corporate sponsor and has had the chance numerous times to take on more, but has declined. For the past 17 years, he’s used Castaway rods – longer than any of the company’s other sponsored fishermen. But, all in all, it all comes back to Ryan’s love of fishing and being on the water – whatever the occasion. “We’ve got a house at Eufaula, and we spend as much time there as we can,” he said. “That’s where me and my boy (Wyatt, 16) spend a lot of hours fishing together. We’ve fished some tournaments together, and I really enjoy that. “But what’s nice is the time we get to spend together, whether it’s on a lake somewhere fishing a tournament, or at the ballpark watching one of his games,” Ryan said. ■ www.adahub.com • 7

After Dinner... Vintage 22

by: Brock Parsons Lisa Hector

When you step inside the tinted doors of Vintage 22 you feel like you stepped into a different world, with its inviting atmosphere and pleasantly upscale, smokefree environment. First, you might notice the extravagant brick walls with built in candles, or the complimentary dark woods. Anywhere you look has a piece of expensive, dark, leather furniture or a similar accent piece; reminiscent of a place you would see in Bricktown or Dallas. “Ada never had anywhere that catered to the people who like to go out, but don’t want to deal with the typical bar scene. says Lisa Hector, co-owner of Vintage 22 along with her husband, Dakota. Both are Alumni of the East Central University Business Department and they truly wanted to give Ada “a safe, atmosphere for the middle to upper class professional groups of Ada. That is how Vintage 22 was born and opened its doors on September 24th, 2009, to an overwhelming amount of success. Years of thought and research were put into creating just the right atmosphere that could feel much more comfortable than just a normal bar. The lighting is dim, like romantic candlelight. High ceilings with abstract artwork and tall windows near the

top eliminate the sense of claustrophobia. Historically, the building began as the Barry Patch Laundromat. In 2008, Lisa and Dakota purchased the location and transformed the structure into the venue that Ada has been missing. It definitely helped in that Dakota is a general contractor and owns Triple H Custom Homes, Inc. Over the course of a year and a half, he did most of the work, turning a bare Laundromat into an upscale, relaxing environment to drink wine, enjoy desserts, and socialize. Everything inside the building has been renovated, and the changes are astounding. Wine is the main choice for most, and their list ranges from international to locally produced specialty wines right from Oklahoma. Other than wine, the menu includes a wide variety of draft and bottled beer and non-alcoholic beverages alike. You can also ask for one of their many gourmet desserts such as Chocolate Fondue or Brulee Cheesecake; but if you’re not in the mood for dessert you can try out their award winning Garden Salsa or Cheese Fondue. Several varieties of cigars are available to enjoy on the outdoor fireside patio. “We have many people that do not drink at all who come in for just the desserts. We are that kind of

place where everyone can feel comfortable, no matter what they order. We’re not necessarily thought of as just a bar.â€? Says Lisa. On Friday and Saturday nights you can catch a live show featuring local acoustic and blues artists. On those perfect fall nights you can enjoy the outdoor fireside patio. The fireside patio is a very popular spot among guests; several tables and chairs encompass the fenced in patio, as well as outdoor sofas that surround the glowing fireplace and luscious landscaping. There is also a second story loft that overlooks the downstairs, complete with another bar and several seating areas. If you need one more reason to visit then you could try Guinness Draught on tap; Vintage 22 is the only bar that offers GuinnessÂŽ on tap in Southern Oklahoma. Their location is a part of the East Main Arts District and is the perfect stop after work, university event, or just an evening out. ay Marshall knows some things are more important than money. When he and his “band” of supporters began the Ada Opry music show earlier this year, turning a profit was not the motivation. “I’m not saying making money isn’t something we don’t like. Not at all,” said the 60-year-old Marshall. “But we don’t put the show on to make money. We do it because we love music and we love performing and we love having fun. It’s all about the music.” The Ada Opry – held one Saturday a month at East Central University’s ballroom -- kicked off in April. The last three shows of 2010 are scheduled for October 16, November 10 and December 6. In October, the show will feature only music from the 1950s and 1960s, while the December show will be the Christmas performance. “All the band members and the singers love music, and we especially love country music,” Marshall said. “And, since our audience is primarily older people who love the classic country music, that’s mostly what we play.” Tickets for the two-hour shows run $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. All tickets include free refreshments supplied during intermission.

Since its premier show in April, the Ada Opry has drawn increasingly larger crowds every month and now brings in 250-300 people for each performance. If the numbers continue to increase, Marshall said the show may move to the Dorothy Summer Auditorium. Featuring the Country Starland Time Band, the show offers what Marshall calls “good, clean family entertainment,” performed by locals who have “more fun than they ought to.” “We’ve got a good band and good singers,” he said. “No, we’re not professional, so sometimes we make mistakes and sometimes we don’t. But we always have a good time, and we hope the people who come to the shows always have a good time.” The band is made up of Wayne Morton (steel guitar), Paul Pratt (acoustic and lead guitar), Steve Wheeler (drums) and Woody Hill (bass). Marshall does most of the vocals, but the show also features a couple of female voices in Annie Weast and Rachel Turpin. Those two local ladies are known as the Opry Angels. “I’ve been singing for a long time, and so has Annie,” said Turpin. “When Ray gave us the chance to be part of the show back in May, I was thinking

it might be a one-time thing, but he asked to come back and be a regular part of the program, and we’ve had so much fun and enjoyed it so much.” Although there are other popular venues in Ada that put on music shows on a regular basis, Marshall insists that the Ada Opry was not designed to compete with anyone. “That’s certainly not why we are doing this,” he said. “This isn’t about us thinking their shows aren’t good enough, or that we can put them out of business or anything like that. It’s just about the fact that we all wanted to make music and put on our own kind of show, and if we never make money at it, that’s okay.” Even though the Ada Opry has enjoyed what some might call “surprising” success in a few short months, Marshall said he and the rest of the Opry gang are not at all surprised. “Some guys and I started talking about this a year or so ago, and we figured that if we put a decent show together, people would come,” Marshall said. “We finally bit the bullet and went out on a limb and decided we’re going to do this, and so far, the people seem to really like it and they keep coming back.” ■

students

the arts district improving

by: Brock Parsons

The East Central University Art Department is painting houses for those in the Fine Arts District. Each fall semester one house is being chosen by ECU Art students to be painted to match the historical context of the district. This helps the community by painting old houses to improve the neighborhood, and each student obtains service learning hours and valuable lessons that can’t be learned in a classroom. As of 2007, following the building of the new Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Building each student at ECU is required to take two classes with service learning components. Each class calls for 15 hours of work in order to keep the service learning component. Usually the work consists of volunteering or doing an activity that takes the students beyond the classroom and teaches life skills. Dr. Brad Jessop, chair of the ECU Art Department, was already started on the restoration before service learning became part of the curriculum. He wrote a grant for Campus Compact and they awarded the department $500 for paint and other supplies, since the project is of no cost to the home owners. The ECU physical plant has also been extremely generous and usually lets the fall team borrow old trucks and ladders for the projects. Each semester ECU’s art students vote on which house will be painted. The criteria are fairly simple. The House must be owner occupied, and there is a preference made towards the elderly, less fortunate, or

those who are disabled or unable to paint a house themselves, although it comes down to which house the students decide on. They also believe that if a person is capable of helping out then they should lend just as much sweat as the students. According to Jessop the project helps the students because “preparation to paint a house and a mural is the same.” The technique required, planning, and learning tool usage. Not using only paint tools, the students also are familiarized with scaffolds and ladders, things not ordinarily found in class. The Fine Arts district prospers each fall when a new home is repainted. It’s not only a huge help for the individual’s home, it helps the entire community neighborhood by providing one house as an example to follow that represents the historical architectures of the community. Houses are painted to accurately represent the bungalow-style home. Last year they chose a house 726 E. 12th street, and this year they have a larger class and have been lucky enough to choose two locations. One is a home on 720 E. 12th, and for the other location they chose a garage on a rare event. The Ada Fine Arts District runs between 9th and Mississippi and 14th and Mississippi, and runs to Francis in the east and stops at Mississippi in the west. Any house within the district is applicable. If you live within the Fine Arts District and wish to apply you can contact Dr. Jessop at 580-559-5353. ■

Zachary Presley

the art of zachary presley

reality and identity

“If I didn’t make art, I would just die.” This might seem rather extreme but let us take a moment to consider that statement. How many of us can honestly say that our very essence of being is cocooned within one pursuit? Zachary Presley is one of these fortunate few. Art has always been present in his life. From a very young age, he drew and sketched. At twelve, while other children were busy with music lessons and karate, Presley was attending painting classes every Tuesday night. His mother would drop him off at seven and he would join his fellow classmates, though they were not the peers he knew

from school. He was the only child in a room full of retirees, taken on as a student in spite of his age and because of his talent. Though he began painting landscapes, fruit, and flowers, Presley has since matured into an artist more concerned with the larger, more complicated issues of reality and identity. He progressed from painting to collage to digital printmaking, but now his work has taken on a more sculptural quality. Constantly in transition, constantly evolving, Presley chooses to interrogate our reality and preconceived notions. In > Continued on page 21 www.adahub.com • 17

the past he has done this by utilizing photographs, placing them in a new context, thus giving them new meaning, or, as the artist calls it, “hyper-reality. “Past and future along with the present often find themselves so entangled that it is hard to tell them apart. This is an idea that goes beyond the personal quality of his hyper-real digital prints. It can also be applied to his newer work which delves into questions of identity— specifically Native American identity. For instance, “The Atomic Indian Trading Post is a cigarette machine that Presley refurbished, painted red, and is currently in the process of filling with boxes reminiscent of cigarette packs with names like “Medicine Man, “Tee Pee, and “Storytellers. Inside each box is information of a cultural and historical nature. By remaking an obsolete cigarette machine into an interactive work of art, Presley also

remakes the viewers understanding of Native American history. Even though Presley speaks of his re-formation as an artist saying, “I feel like I have something different to say now,â€? he is still questioning the nature of our own personal and cultural realities—in particular the stereotypes of Native Americans and their conflicted past with the United States government. Zachary Presley is an artist who will continue to transform in accordance with the story he needs to tell, because art, for him, is life. “Sometimes the work just feels like it needs to be made. And you don’t even know what it is. It just comes out of you. And as you’re making it the meaning just becomes clearer and clearer.â€? You can see his work at two upcoming shows in Oklahoma City: the “Red Dotâ€? show at The IAO Gallery on Friday, November 20 and the “18th Annual City Arts Invitationalâ€? at City Arts, January28-February 12th. â–

life somewhere

turn to

by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

Can you even begin to imagine the desperation of becoming a teenage mother or the personal darkness following an abortion? The overwhelming loneliness and heartbreaking sadness? It is during these struggles when we most need somewhere to turn, to give us our life back, to give us hope. The Ada House of Hope is one such place. Walking into the house at 509 East 12th Street was surprising. While crossing the street, I had to check for the sign, making sure I was in the correct place; I was afraid I was going to simply walk into a stranger’s living room. But this was no accident. The House of Hope wants it to seem like a home because they want those who come to feel comfortable within a safe, friendly, and non-judgmental environment. The House of Hope is so much more than a pregnancy crisis center. Though they do administer pregnancy tests, provide information about adoption, and counsel against abortion, they primarily seek to both educate and emotionally heal those who come to them. They have parenting classes where the students can earn “Mommy Money” to spend in their store, purchasing items such as baby clothes, food, and diapers. And it isn’t just

22 • www.adahub.com

April Hunley, Georgiana Sullivan, Kim Tatum, and Susan Kiser

pregnant women who participate; further incentives are given if the father chooses to take part as well. They also have abstinence education classes where the students’ points go towards vintage clothing instead of diapers. The volunteers are the most inspirational aspect of the House of Hope, though. These four women give their time and energy in order to help others. The conversation was peppered with comments about “being true to women” and how they want to help “real women with real issues.” The mood became most solemn, however, when discussing postabortion therapy. As one of the volunteers said, “You have just as much right to grieve over an abortion as a miscarriage.” This is an integral part of their mission, especially as a faithbased program. After a woman has an abortion, there might be a tendency to become selfdestructive or even turn away from God. These women want to stop that from happening in the first place. They want to, “Save the baby but also save the mom.” No matter what the

circumstances, the volunteers at the House of Hope want to help. “Women don’t give themselves enough credit,” they say. “They are worth saving.” The House of Hope is made possible only by the community. It has two paid employees, but either would work for free if need be. Their commitment is that intense. They get no funding from the government or the state, so the only way to keep the doors open, helping those young women who need them, is through donations. Several churches, businesses, and individuals contribute to their fund, but the more they have, the more they can share. Trinity Collegiate Ministries, for instance, has been raising money to build a storage unit to house donations like cribs, changing tables, and clothes. October 4th8th they will be having a diaper drive for those necessities. And, on November 6th, they are having the Walk for Life, all proceeds going toward operating costs. If you are interested in becoming a liaison in your church or business, participating, or sponsoring a walker, contact the Ada House of Hope at (580) 332-4199. And if you can’t walk with them, they ask that you walk on your own, in solidarity with their cause, for women everywhere. When I asked them what the public can do to help, they told me, simply enough, “Volunteer, donate, and pray.” ■
