Volunteer
in Ada
Harriet Naylor once said, “Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice ones ideal, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them.” Volunteering is a rewarding experience. As a Native Adan, I’ve watched how volunteers have helped to transform our community for several decades, so I was overjoyed when a reader inquired about how to get involved and volunteer in the Ada area. Volunteering can require as little or as much commitment and time as you are willing to give. Volunteer opportunities can range from year-long commitments with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, to volunteering a few hours to help serve food at the community Thanksgiving dinner. Even if you volunteer only a few hours a year you can still have a positive impact on our community. There is a wide variety of volunteer opportunities in the Ada area available to people who want to get more involved and give back. Non-profits and service organizations such as the United Way and Red Cross are one option volunteers have in the Ada area. I would list all the organizations a person could volunteer with, but the list would span several pages. The best way to learn which organizations need volunteers when you’re ready to get involved is to call 211. 211 is a free service that connects people with community services and volunteer opportunities. Callers only
have to provide their zip code and they will get the contact information for a variety of organizations seeking volunteers. You can use the information provided by 211 about these organizations to find the ideal cause to give your time and talents to. Civic clubs, such as Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions, are another way to volunteer and give back to the community. These membership-based groups often conduct community events and raise funds for special projects or charities. The Chamber of Commerce is an excellent resource for contact information for these clubs. Community wide events are also great opportunities to volunteer. Without volunteers, these events would not happen and they not only give back to those in need but they also enhance our community. These events range from the Thanksgiving dinner to the Ada Air Expo. Volunteer opportunities in the Ada area are endless and I encourage you to seek out opportunities to give back and improve our community. By giving a little of ourselves and our time, we can enhance Ada for all citizens now and in the future. If it wasn’t for the volunteers of yesteryear, Ada would not be the community it is today. Researching this article has given me a new enthusiasm for volunteering and I’d like to thank the reader who asked about getting involved in Ada. O
n a hot Saturday night northwest of Ada, hundreds of people gather for an American pastime. Cars fill a dirt lot, and kids play touch football behind the bleachers as the rumble of engines filters through the dusty air. Families stand as the Star Spangled Banner plays, and a quiet Oklahoma evening turns into roaring engines and screaming fans. This is dirt track racing at Oklahoma Sports Park. For Gena and Rex Jones, their daughter Alex and son Rowdy, the dirt track is home on summer Saturday nights. The Joneses are a racing family. While they haven’t been racing for as long as some, they have been dirt track fans since the night they met. Twenty-five years ago Rex agreed to go to a dirt track race with Gena on a blind date. “My mom ran the ticket stand, so he knew he would get in free,” said Gena remembering the event. Since then, dirt has been in the Jones’ family blood. Their son Rowdy was the reason they started racing. After working in the pits and hanging out with family friends who raced, he finally convinced his father Rex to get a car. “Rowdy was only eleven
at the time, so I drove the car the first season,” Rex said. He started in the Pure Stock class: a factory built car that had been stripped inside, had a roll cage installed, and dirt tires. Rex quickly wanted to move up into a faster class of car. Rex remembers that, after getting a second car, he let Gena race his old car one Saturday night. “Someone told me, ‘You just lost that car.’ And, Gena came off the track and said, ‘I like that!’” And, the second Jones driver was born. Gena, too, quickly decided to move up into the same class of Pro/Street Stock with Rex. However, racing against your spouse on a dirt track also comes with some interesting predicaments. “When we’re both on the track, it’s like no one else is there but us two,” says Gena. “Women tell me all the time they wish they could race their husbands on the track!” Eventually Rowdy did get his day on the dirt and added the third driver to the Jones’ racing team. “He’s aggressive on the track and just wants to go to the front,” said Rex. Rowdy has proved to be a good driver and is currently ranked 18th in his class for the 2011 Oklahoma
Sports Park season. Although their daughter doesn’t race, the four Jones’ account for the use of the number four on all of their cars. Rex drives the 4J, Gena the 4GJ and Rowdy the 4RJ. The number 4 is also part of the family business. Quad J Acoustics, one of Southern Oklahoma’s largest acoustic and drywall companies, is just as family run as their racing. “It’s always about family,” Gena said. For Gena however, there is another dimension to racing. Gena is a woman in a man’s world. Although there are other female drivers in the world of dirt track, they are still far from common and even further from being accepted. In a world of dirt, grease, sweat and adrenaline, many men still don’t like racing against a woman, much less being beaten by one. The 4GJ car of Gena Jones is one of the most easily recognized cars in Ada mostly due to the predominant use of purple in the body design. “I’m a girl, and I want everyone to know I’m a girl,” Gena said. Being a girl isn’t always a helpful trait because her car is just as easily
recognized by the male drivers and often creates a target to beat. But, Gena doesn’t want any special treatment. “I’m just one of the boys when I’m out there,” she said. Along with her gender and the uniqueness of her car comes a loyal fan base. “My kids hate it when I get recognized places,” Gena said. “It drives my daughter crazy.” Gena loves kids and often brings snacks to the track for her young fans. “Some of my biggest fans that I appreciate coming out there are the Ada Youth Shelter kids.” Gena said she loves having the kids come by her trailer and tries to make them feel special. No matter what the prize money, racing for the Joneses is all about fun. Racing is an expensive sport, and racing two or three cars even more so. “I’m the one that fixes the cars,” says Rex, “so she doesn’t mind hitting me on the track because I’m doing the work.” No matter what the outcome of a weekend, the Joneses always feel blessed. “I never did anything for myself until I started racing,” said Gena, “I just feel so blessed to be able to race.” ■ www.adahub.com • 13
Rudy Lupinski
the music man He is, as much as anyone else, Ada, Oklahoma’s version of “The Music Man.” if you don’t know Rudy Lupinski, or if you haven’t seen him perform at some point during the past 30 years, you’re more than likely not a fan of anything to do with music. Since 1980, and even a little before, Rudy Lupinski has been a part of almost any musical project or performance to grace a stage in the Ada area. A longtime piano teacher, music store employee and music director at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Lupinski is a man whose life revolves around music. “I love music, and always have,” said Lupinski, who has worked as an adjunct professor of music at East Central University since 2003. “I play organ and piano in a lot of different venues, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I guess if I had to, I could imagine a world without music, but it wouldn’t be the same.” Born in Heidleberg, Germany in 1956 to a German father and an Italian mother, Rudy immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1957. They settled in Ada because their sponsor family was from this 14 • www.adahub.com

area, and it’s been home to the Lupinskis since that time. Today, Rudy lives just down the street from his mother, Anna. After attending Catholic school through the eighth grade, Rudy graduated from Ada High School and East Central. He worked for 18 years at Ada Music Company and has taught private piano lessons for many years. He has played with the Moonlighters, a popular jazz ensemble, for a number of years, and has been a member of several other bands as well. “I’m not really in any bands right now, except the Moonlighters when we have a gig,” he said. “I play regularly at church, and have for more than 30 years, and I play piano or organ to accompany ECU students in various competitions or recitals.” Lupinski also serves as musical director for Ada Community Theatre productions when necessary, as well as theatrical productions for ECU. In his “spare” time, he has worked on a collaborative musicwriting project with Ada resident Tori Davidson. When asked about his favorite music, Lupinski did not hesitate to answer.
“Bach,” he said simply, speaking of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach. “I love his music, and I always have. There is a particular performer -- Jaque Loussier -- whose CDs I have and listen to quite a bit. He was one of the first people I ever heard take classical music and perform it with a jazz twist, and he almost exclusively uses Bach music. Lupinski also said he loves to read, but it’s not books he reads -- it’s music. “Like a literary reader loves new books, I love new music,” he said. “I spend as much time as I can reading new music to see what people are doing and where music is going. To me, that’s exciting.” Despite the emphasis that he has placed on music in his life, Lupinski says he never tires of playing, reading and listening to music. And, although someday he knows he will no longer be able to play, he does all he can to enjoy each day seated at the piano or the organ. “I know there will come a time when, physically, I might not be able to play anymore,” he said. “But, until then, I just play whenever I can because it’s who I am.” ■

High and Dry trapped on family vacation by: Roy Deering
The desert of the American Southwest is an amazing, dangerous and somewhat unpredictable place. My family found that out first-hand July 20 when we became part of a group of 73 tourists “trapped” by a flash flood in the far northeastern corner of Utah’s Arches National Park. We stopped at Arches, located in southeastern Utah, on the way home from an extended trip of preaching in Oregon and Washington. Because my oldest son had flown home earlier in the trip to attend a singing school, our group included my wife, Beverly, my youngest son, Caleb, 11, and my daughter, Grace, 8, and me. We had been at Washington’s Mount Rainier for a quick visit two days earlier after preaching consecutive weeks at Klamath Falls, Or., Odell, Or., North Plains, Or., and Pacific, Washington. Arches was to be our last stop, and we arrived at the park on a cloudless and blistering afternoon, just before 1 p.m. The park has more than 2,000 natural rock arches carved by wind and water, truly a spectacle of God’s creation. One of the more popular is Delicate Arch, which can be reached by a long, hot hike of more than three miles round-trip. After four hours in the park, we decided to make a quick trip to go see the Delicate Arch, but opted for a short walk to the viewpoint rather than taking the full hike along the trail. Driving to the viewpoint took us over a dry low-water spot known as Salt Wash. Washes are seen throughout the deserts of the Southwest and can be dangerous during heavy rains. Our skies were clear and the temperature was well above 100 degrees. Fifteen minutes later, after viewing Delicate Arch, we were walking back to our van when a National Park Ranger informed us that the road was closed because of a flash flood. We stared at him perplexed, not

able to understand how there could be a flash flood with clear skies and scorching temperatures. We were informed that it had rained very hard more than 150 miles north of the park TWO DAYS earlier, and that the water had just reached the park and our only road out was now closed because the water was more than three feet deep. The water was less than 100 yards across, but too deep and flowing too quickly to risk driving across. There was a foot bridge that could be used to get to the portable restrooms on the other side of the wash, but no vehicles could leave. And so we sat, along with 69 other people (many of whom were foreign tourists who did not speak English) for more than seven hours, waiting for the waters to recede. For the first two hours, the water rose, forcing park personnel to bring in bottled water and military MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), to help get people through the evening. With people from Italy, Germany, France, Ireland and several U.S. states, we watched the sun set and the stars come out, stranded by high water under a gorgeous, cloudless sky. Just after 1:30 a.m. on July 21, Thursday morning, with storms building once again to our north, a few cars ventured across the water and made it our safely. We soon followed, exited the park just after 2 a.m. and passed through Moab, Utah on what would be a straightthrough trip back to Oklahoma, some 17 hours away. ■
Ingredients • • • • • •
2 tablespoons honey mustard 8 slices wheat bread, toasted 2 apples, thinly sliced 8 slices Swiss cheese 1/2 cup sliced cucumber 8 ounces sliced turkey breast
Directions 1. Lightly spread mustard on each slice of toast; set aside. Place apples on a microwavesafe plate and microwave, uncovered, on high for 1 minute or until slightly softened. 2. Arrange half of the apple slices and cheese on 4 slices of toast. Top with cucumber and turkey. Add remaining apple and cheese slices. Top with remaining toast, mustard side down. Yield: 4 servings.

If you’re one of many Ada residents who think the K. Rhynes Surplus store has been a fixture in downtown Ada forever, think again. Kenny Rhynes Jr.’s eclectic dry goods store has certainly been around a long time, but not quite “forever.” “My grandfather opened his store in 1938, so we haven’t quite been around since the beginning of time,” Rhynes said. “But there has been a Rhynes store in downtown Ada for more than 80 years, and we’ve been in our current location since 1977.” K. Rhynes Surplus is one of Ada’s most unique retail businesses, selling everything from garden tools and western clothing to snow skiing apparel and cast iron cookware. Much of the time, shoppers come to Rhynes when they can’t find what they want at other stores. And, most of the time Rhynes either has what the customer has been searching for -- or he can get it. “I couldn’t begin to tell you what we carry and what we don’t, because it changes all the time,” Rhynes said. “There are some things we carry all the time because we sell a lot of it and because we know our customers will keep coming back for it.” Asked to describe his store, Rhynes hesitated and then laughed. “I’d call it an old fashioned dry goods store,” he said. “Some people call us a hardware store, but we sell a lot more than hardware. I’m not sure our store fits into one of those categories, but if you had to put a title on it, I’d call it a dry goods store.” “We sell a lot of hardware, a lot of tack and horse supplies and an awful lot of footwear,” he said. “We carry 20 different kinds of boots, and I’d have to say that footwear is consistently our best seller.” Since his grandfather, Dennis Rhynes, bought the family’s first store during the Great Depression (1938) for $200 and a Model A Ford, there has been a Rhynes store as an anchor for downtown Ada. For many years, Kenneth Rhynes Sr. ran the business, and Kenny now runs the store which bears the letter “K” in front of the Rhynes name in honor of his father. From the original location at 303 W. Main,

the store continued to expand through the years and has existed at its current location, 231 W. Main, for more than 40 years. Although business tends to be steady throughout the year (July and August are somewhat slower), business really picks up when winter storms come barreling through the area. Then Rhynes’ supply of shovels, heaters, snowsleds and other winter items keeps customers coming back. “Part of it is that these people need those kinds of things and can’t get them anywhere else,” Rhynes said. “And, I think part of our being busy then is because people get cabin fever and when they can finally get out -- they do.” Because of the amazing array of merchandise that can be found in Rhynes Surplus, it’s not uncommon for customers to come into the store “just to look around.” “We get that every day,” Kenny said with a laugh. “People just think it’s neat to come in and see what we have, because they almost always find something they didn’t expect to find.” One day last month, two travelers from France happened into the store while passing through Ada. Although language was somewhat of a barrier, the customers did manage to tell Rhynes how much they enjoyed his store, and both left with straw hats to keep as mementos of their trip. When asked if there are ever times when he doesn’t have in stock something that a customer asks for, Rhynes again laughed.

“That happens all the time, every day,” he said. “They come here because they can’t find it anywhere else. But, usually, if we don’t have it, we buy from so many different suppliers who handle so many different kinds of products that we can have whatever it is they want in just a few days.” Although most of his customers are from Ada and the surrounding counties, he does ship items all over the country from time to time. He even shipped a pair of Roundhouse overalls to Australia once. “There was a man who worked for a railroad in Australia, and he wanted some overalls, so he got ahold of the Roundhouse overall company which is out of Shawnee,” Rhynes explained. “They don’t sell directly to the public, so they gave him our name as a dealer, and we fixed him up.” Stepping into K. Rhynes Surplus does evoke a store of the past, with wooden floors, a wide variety of merchandise and front doors that tend to stay open six days a week. And, although they way they do business hasn’t changed much in the past 80 years, Kenny said there are plans in the works to give the store a presence on the World Wide Web. “We tried the internet thing once before, but didn’t get it right, and so we’re trying again,” he said. “But we won’t let that change the way we do business for our customers right here at home. We’ve been doing things the right way for eighty years, and we’re not going to stop now.” ■ www.adahub.com • 21

Back to School on a budget

With school starting in just a few weeks, it means the expensive task of buying school supplies and new clothes. These purchases can really have big impact on your monthly budget, but with a little time and planning they don’t have to. School Supplies School supplies can break the bank, especially when you have more than one child enrolled in school. I recommend creating a master list of the all the school supplies needed this year for all your children combined. Once you have everything purchased you can divide the supplies up among each child. A master list will help make sure you get everything needed when it is at its lowest price. Each week compare the all the sale ads with what is needed on your master list. I recommend checking grocery store ads, which have some school supply deals, and stores located outside of Ada. Toy R Us and Target often have great prices and some local stores such as, Wal-Mart and Staples, price match competitors’ ads. Price matching will let you take advantage of local deals and out of town deals, while allowing you to shop locally.

If you find a really great deal, consider stocking up so you’ll have extra supplies to use around the house or if your child needs more during the school year. Buy quality products, such as graphic calculators and protractors that can be handed down between your children, this will save you money in the long run. School Clothes Every child wants a new wardrobe to wear to school each year, which can cost a pretty penny. I recommend taking your child to local clothing stores and making a list of what clothes they really like and the appropriate sizes, but don’t actually purchase all the items during this shopping trip. Allow them to pick out one or two budget friendly “trendy” items that will be purchased that
day. Spend a portion of your clothing budget during this trip by investing in several basic pieces. You should be able to layer these basics so they can transition from summer to autumn temperatures easily. A month or two after school starts the majority of the items on your children’s want lists will be on sale. Take your list to the store and purchase these items at a significant discount. Not only will this infuse your children’s wardrobes with new items in the middle of the semester, but it will save you a lot of money. Also remember to check store websites and Facebook pages for additional money saving coupons and offers whenever you go shopping. If you take the time to compare prices and patiently wait for items to go on sale, you can make back to school budget friendly. ■
