THE
S T OP T OBACCO COALITION BY SUNNIE DAWN SMITH
While our health is obviously important to us, it is also one of the things that sometimes gets neglected. It’s difficult to eat right and to exercise the optimal amount. It is also difficult to stop a long term addiction like smoking. Thankfully there is help when it is most needed. The STOP (Stomp Tobacco Outta Pontotoc) Tobacco Coalition tries to help people quit tobacco and make it easier for this goal to be realized. Angela Harjo, the Tobacco Prevention Coordinator for Pontotoc County, wants to help people be healthier through government support and policy changes. Harjo has been involved with programs such as Head Start, the Seminole Nation’s Tribal Youth Program, domestic violence programs, and now tobacco policy. She has always been interested in helping people better their lives through prevention and awareness. Tobacco use is definitely an area that could use some help in our state. Even though progress has been made, it is not nearly enough. Oklahoma ranked 47th in the nation for tobacco use in 2011 and in 2012 dropped to 39th. Smoking rates among the population stood at 26.14% in 2011 and fell to 23.3% in 2012. While this is a significant decrease, Harjo would still like to see the numbers even lower. It is the biggest killer in Oklahoma with 6,200 deaths per year due to smoking related illnesses. This is more deaths than AIDS, alcohol, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. It isn’t just lung cancer; many more cancers can be caused by smoking. And while heart disease is the largest killer in Oklahoma, tobacco can also cause complications with diabetes, blood pressure, and a host of other ailments.

The STOP Tobacco Coalition works a lot with policy change. They are responsible for making our schools and city own property tobacco free, twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week. As of now, six out of seven schools are completely tobacco free. They work with businesses to make their property tobacco free as well. Some apartment complexes are even coming on board. Soon The Woodlands will be entirely smoke free as well. These initiatives help prevent the dangers of second and third hand smoke, as well as keeping the properties clean and in good condition. It can also make it easier for people to quit smoking when they aren’t constantly reminded of their old habit. In addition to these policy changes, the STOP Tobacco Coalition also promotes the Oklahoma Tobacco Hotline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) and their website OKHelpLine.com. They will help ages 13 and up with coaching and support and they will help ages 18 and up with nicotine replacement. This is free of charge for at least the first two weeks and they will also work with your insurance to make it cost effective. The quit rate with this program is 34%, whereas quitting cold turkey without a support structure only yields a 5% success rate. In addition to helping in these ways, they understand that it might take multiple attempts in order to successfully put the addiction behind you. Because of this, everyone is allows two quit attempts per year. If it doesn’t work the first time, you can always try again. The STOP Tobacco Coalition also works in conjunction with a new youth group in town, Students Taking a New Direction (STAND) which covers drugs prevention and awareness. They focus mainly on marijuana, alcohol, prescription drugs, and tobacco. The group is for kids ages 12-18 and they actually take steps to try to influence policy, as well as participating in local events, helping make people aware of the dangers that these substances pose. The meetings are held at the Ada Public Library on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 5:30. Parents are welcome to come and they also feed the kids dinner while they discuss how to make our community a better place. A new year is coming up soon. People will make new resolutions to improve their lives. If you are struggling with tobacco addiction, this is the perfect time to get the help you need. If you are interested in policy, more information, or becoming a smoke free business or housing complex, contact Angela Harjo at (580) 332-3011, ext. 118. You can also email her at angelarh@health.ok.gov. The Pontotoc County Drug Free Coalition has an excellent website to check out for more information at pcdfc.org. Also, if you want to support the youth movement, you can check out their Facebook page by searching for STAND, or you can follow them on Twitter @standpc. For more information you can email them at standyouthcoalition@gmail.com. So many options exist to get the life and health you want. ACHRISTIAN ARON R APPER R AY: SUNNIE DAWN SMITH
Aaron Ray hasn’t always been a Christian Hip Hop Artist. A journey born of pain, misery, faith, and love has brought him to the point where he is now. It all began four years ago, when Aaron was at his lowest point. But, as Aaron says, he looked to God, put his trust in him, and followed the path set out for him. What followed was the beginnings of an illustrious career in music and marriage to his bride. This all flowed out of his unwavering faith in God.
Music has always been a part of Aaron’s life. He started writing all different types of music when he was twelve, and he started playing the guitar at fifteen. All kinds of music appealed to him, but especially bands like Manafest and Thousand Foot Krutch. He got to the point where he would listen to the music while driving and rap while the bands would play their instrumental breakdowns. He was just fooling around though. He didn’t think it would lead him to the path he is now following.

Four years ago, Aaron had his heart broken. Everything was falling apart for him. He turned to music, but he still felt lost. As Aaron says, “Music became an idol for me; it was taking the place of God. I turned to music instead of the Bible.” He talked to his mom and she challenged him to do a 30-day fast. No girls. No Facebook. No MySpace. No secular music. Around the 20-day mark, things became very difficult for him. He was praying every day. He started listening to instrumental music only. He started rapping more while listening to the instrumentalists. He knew there was a path; he was just trying to see it clearly. Around the same time, a girl started coming around-Jane. Aaron’s brother had made friends with her at a Christian book store where she worked and tried to set her up with Aaron. This was before Aaron’s fast when he was to the point of swearing off relationships. Near the end of his fast, though, he started having dreams about her and dreams about being on stage. He didn’t know why and he would wake up frustrated, wondering what the dreams meant. She was praying for him during the fast and near the end, she heard him rapping in the back room of his parent’s house. She knocked on the door and told him that he was talented, and should consider a career in Christian Hip Hop. Near the very end of his fast, his brother’s church was having a revival. They had a guest speaker from Texas who was supposed to come up for the last night. He didn’t come, though. He told Aaron’s brother that he felt like he shouldn’t be there. He’d prayed about it and just couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t supposed to go. This left Aaron’s brother in a bind, but he just decided to lead the revival himself. He spoke for an hour and a half and Aaron noticed that people weren’t really getting it. But he was. He was truly understanding the concept of “going back to the cross.” As Aaron says, “Then I heard God talking to me, in my heart, and God told me to get up there and tell my story.” So he did. He preached for
hours and hours until well after midnight. At the end, everyone was on their knees, crying out to God. He looked into the back where his parents were praying with Jane. God told Aaron that she was going to be his wife. He told Aaron that it wasn’t going to be easy, there would be rough patches, but that was the path chosen for Aaron. At that moment, Aaron went up to Jane and said, “This may sound crazy, but I’m going to marry you one of these days.” He did marry Jane and now they have a baby together after three years of marriage. He about to release his third full album in mid-2015. He’s done shows all over the country. This is a way for him to help teenagers cope with their problems and the negativity they face on a daily basis, while also bringing them closer to God. Aaron’s producer, Travis Wyrick of Lakeside Studios in Knoxville Tennessee, has won four GMA Dove Awards as well as two Grammy nominations. Travis reached out to record Aaron because he felt that Aaron needed a mentor as well as a way to better his craft. Aaron’s latest album, IDENTITY, will debut in mid-2015 and will include eleven songs. You can find his previous two albums, Live Out Loud and Born Sinner on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Spotify. Aaron’s latest accolade includes being featured on the JUCE TV network which airs to over 800 networks across the United States and globally. Aaron traveled to Tampa Florida and filmed his episode for Soul Mag TV which aired last month. He was able to share his personal testimony as well as debut his Live Out Loud Music Video featuring C-Phresh. You can check out his Twitter or Instagram @aaronray2013. His website is www.aaronraymusic.com and you can follow him on Facebook at aaronraymusic. To contact him or to book a show, you can email him at aaronraymusic@gmail.com or call (405) 213-3005. Above all, Aaron Ray wants you to know that you should, “Trust in God with your dreams and what you want to do; let God take over and watch it grow into something bigger and greater.”

A MURAL STREET ON MAIN If you’ve recently driven past the corner of Mississippi and Main, you must have noticed the new mural depicting nine of the greatest artists associated with Ada. This mural was born out of the Art’s District renovation spearheaded by Bridget Forshay and Dr. Brad Jessop. Not only has Forshay been bringing businesses and events into the Art’s District, Jessop has also had his service learning classes paint the houses in order to restore them to their previous conditions. As of now, they have painted almost every house in the Art’s District. When Dr. Cunningham contacted Jessop and said that the wall of Ada Vision Source was theirs to do with what they wished, the mural started to come to fruition. With the help of Jessop’s Painting Two, Three, Four, and Five classes, the mural could begin to take life. It wasn’t easy to narrow down the featured artists, though. They realized this dilemma when they wanted to have music from Ada artists in the background when Bridget Forshay and Any Elliott were hosting an Art’s Leadership Conference; they came up with over 100 songs. When they were trying to decide who to feature on the mural, they needed to narrow it down to seven to nine people. Their first criteria was that they needed
to have two Billboard Top 40 hits or two works of art in a major museum with collection assets in excess of one billion dollars. There were still too many people though. So they tightened the criteria to three Billboard Top 40 Hits or three works in a major museum. All of the artists and musicians fit this criteria. They also had to live a significant portion of their life in Ada. Six musicians grace the wall of Dr. Cunningham’s building: Zac Maloy, Jay Daversa, Mae Boren Axton, Hoyt Axton, Johnny Barbata, and Blake Shelton. Zac Maloy was a member of the band The Nixons. After that group stopped performing, he continued his career writing songs for artists such as Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, and Blake Shelton. Jay Daversa is a jazz trumpeter who had performed with Herbie Hancock, Henry Mancini, Frank Zappa, and many, many more. Mae Boren Axton was a prolific songwriter, with over 200 songs to her name. Her most famous are “Skid Row,” performed by Jerry Lee Lewis, and “Heartbreak Hotel,” one of the most famous Elvis songs. Her son, Hoyt Axton, continued in her path as a songwriter, also singing and acting. Some of his best known songs are “Joy to the World” and “Never Been to Spain,” both performed by Three Dog Night.
