HE ALTH & WELLNESS

Top 9 Tactics to Help Fight Post Exercise Soreness by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

Grumbling about aches and pains might be the first language among you and your training buddies. Muscle soreness occurs after intense exercise due to lactic acid build-up and small microscopic tears in your muscle fibers. There are a few foods you can include in your diet to help your body heal itself and soothe muscle soreness, as well as some other ways you can take care of your post-workout bod: 1 Tart cherry Juice – a few recent studies showed that athletes who drank pure tart cherry juice reduced muscle soreness and pain post exercise due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

2 Water – dehydration causes sore muscles and increases pain post exercise. Concentrating on hydration before, during and after exercise reduces soreness. 3 Ginger & Turmeric – add ginger and turmeric to your food to decrease inflammation, especially if you experience joint pain. 4 Recovery Nutrition – post-workout protein is used to repair microscopic tears in your muscles while carbs are used to replenish glucose and glycogen and spare protein from being used as energy. 5 Foam Roller – foam rolling massages out muscle “knots.”

Hearing r e t t e B y Enjo

6 Mobility – stretching, yoga and other mobility exercises helps muscles recover from soreness and lessen future soreness from exercise. 7 Keep Moving – exercising lightly when you are really sore can help your muscles heal more quickly. 8 Hot showers – hot water soothes sore muscles. If your muscles are painful beyond sore, alternative heat and cold. 9 Topical magnesium – magnesium relaxes muscles. Our favorite is Life Flo’s Magnesium Sport Roll-On.

What's Happening Ada? by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

How many times have you heard someone complain that there is nothing to do in Ada? How many times have you, yourself, had the same complaint? The problem isn’t that there is nothing to do. The problem is that people don’t know about all the different events and activities that happen every day in Ada. This is something that Deanna West Piercy has tried to remedy through the use of Facebook. While many people think of Facebook as a way to connect with friends and family members and perhaps play the occasional game, what most don’t realize is the role that this technology can play in engaging an entire community and bringing us closer together. In December of 2014, Deanna realized that there was a need for this type of group. She and her husband, David, had already started Happyland Music Alliance and was busy trying to promote local bands, getting a larger audience for good music. She realized, though, that Ada needed a resource to publicize all local events. While individual groups and organizations might post about their events, only the people that follow them would see it. So Deanna started the group “What’s Happening Ada,” in order to be a clearinghouse for all the different types of events. Since the group was started a year and a half ago, membership has grown to over 3,500 members, many of whom check the page daily

and share the events on their own pages. The large number of participants just makes the group even better because, while Deanna does spend a lot of time researching local events, there is no possible way for her to find all of them on her own. While Deanna has a particular interest in music, that is not the only type of event highlighted on the page. People also share information about theater, fundraisers, Ada Public Library events, ECU events, church events, local meetings, road closings, City of Ada Events such as Music in the Park and Movies in the Park, Street Festivals like Ada Fest (coming up on August 27th), East End Eats (which is the first Thursday of every month), McSwain events, including the weekly movie listings, and the movies showing at the Cinemark as well. During severe winter weather, Deanna starts a post dedicated to information about school closings and road conditions. On Sundays she has a thread for job opportunities in the area. On Mondays, she shares a Happyland Music Alliance post detailing the events of the coming week and pins it to the top of the group for easy access. During Halloween, this group made many parents’ lives easier, just being able to access all the events going on around town for the kids. One of Deanna’s favorite things about running this group is getting to see all of the cool

things happening around town, some of which she never would have known about if it weren’t for the other group members. The biggest challenge she faces, however, is making sure that the group stays up to her standards and on topic. For instance, this group is not a yard sale group or a lost and found. However, she does provide information about these other groups in her group description. Because of this, all posts must be approved by the admin. While this might cause a slight delay in time, it keeps the quality and integrity of the group. When you visit the group, you know that you will just find events that are pertinent and not be bombarded with spam. If you aren’t already a member of “What’s Happening Ada” you should be. All it takes is a Facebook account. Not only will you see that there are more than enough things to do in Ada, you will also be helping make Ada even more of a tight knit community. As Deanna says, “A sense of community is one of the true pleasures of living in a small town. Sharing local events and encouraging people to participate provides a source of connection and inspires pride and a sense of belonging.” She would like you to join the group, post your own events, and share the events. Most importantly, though, you should take advantage of this opportunity and go out there and see what our town really has to offer.

Music has the power to reach deep into your soul. It takes a person reaching deep into their soul to create good music. There are many varieties of music on the shelves, or streaming across the airwaves, and everybody has a certain style that speaks to them. Some people enjoy classical, others prefer country or rock and some people are intrigued by rap. When it comes to throwin’ down a dope “two bar”, Levi Hinson is your guy. Hinson was born on March 9, 2000 in Abilene, Texas. He moved to Ada with his family in 2004. Hinson got his first cheap mic when he was eleven years old and has been into rap ever since. His mother was a music teacher and she had a lot of influence on him as a young child.

“I remember one day writing this song that was super corny. I got my garage band microphone out and plugged it into my mom’s computer and then began rapping it to a beat I got off of youtube”, Levi shared. This was his first memory of wanting to be a rapper. His desire to be a rapper did not wither over the years, on the other hand, it has blossomed into three albums. He released his first album at the age of 13. Levi’s music is faith based with a Biblical worldview. Rapzilla, a Christian Rap & Hip Hop website, picked up his music where he got over 18,000 plays within a few weeks. They even featured one of his songs on their “Freshmen List” album in 2015. Another song he and Adrian Stresow composed, was actually used by Bleacher Report in a highlight video for the 2015-2016 NBA All Rookie Teams. The cool thing about Levi is that he is more excited about sharing a message than getting any sort of recognition for himself. He says, “Being a

musician is a great way to vent and get things out in the open. I just want to talk about my life in a way that God sees fit”. You can tell that Levi has a genuine relationship with God, when you hear him refer to Him as “Dad”, as he raps. Levi does not want to censor himself for the sake of making feel good music. He prefers a more honest approach, and as long as his music doesn’t clash with the Bible, he feels good about it. Levi was the headliner at the “Ordinary People Lounge” in Oklahoma City. The venue had a great vibe and Levi enjoyed being at a place where the people were actually there just to listen to music. He said, “The crowd was really into the music and their support really motivated him during the performance”. Levi also opened for Levi The Poet at Bistro 46 in Oklahoma City. He has also performed at coffee shops and church events where he has made many connections.

GRAY REAL

When he is not dropping mad rhymes, Levi enjoys photography and editing pictures. He also loves the business side of music. In fact, he is in the process of starting an Indie Record label with five other friends, called “Our Internet Friends”. They will also be working on setting up shows and merchandise. He is really excited to see what will happen with the label in the future. Levi has always had the support and encouragement of his mom and dad. “They may not love my style of music, but they always encourage me and have helped me get to where I am with my music today”, Levi mentioned. Levi encourages those who have a talent to use it to the best of their ability. We all have something to offer the world…see what Levi is serving up at www.iamlevihinson.xyz. You can listen to his music for free on his website and you can also see what he is up to on Social Media by typing in @iamlevihinson.
