Zeta History • Zeta Tau Alpha sorority was founded in 1898 at Virginia State Female Normal School by nine students who shared a special friendship. In an effort to see others enjoy the bond of sharing diverse strengths and talents, they established the sorority. Their mission is to enrich their lives and impact their communities through “leadership development, continued personal growth, academic achievement and service to others.” • Their long standing motto, “Seek the Noblest” reflects their charter drafted in 1902: “The object of said association shall be to intensify friendship, promote happiness among its members, and in every way to create such sentiments, to perform such deeds, and to mould such opinions as will conduce to the building up of a nobler and purer womanhood in the world.” • Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation, Inc. was established in 1954 to raise money for the support of educational, philanthropic and “responsive to the changing needs of society.” The foundation also provides scholarships and grants. • ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation started 1977 to “assist collegiate chapters in locating, funding, and maintaining safe, competitive housing for collegiate members.” Their board is made up of volunteers who manage the corporation and appoints directors who work with the community to provide the best possible housing for ZTA.

When most people hear the word ‘sorority’ they probably don’t think about things like charity, high ideals and community involvement. At ECU the Zeta Tau Alpha members stand out for their noble causes and high standards of excellence as students and women. The Zetas have partnered with various organizations like Self Magazine, Yoplait, Lifetime Television, and Betsey Johnson Boutiques to promote breast cancer awareness and prevention. Zeta was the first national sponsor for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Race for the Cure’s National Series Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program in 1992. Since then the national sorority has faithfully collected funds for breast cancer education and awareness. The local Zeta chapter is hosting a fundraiser in the new Hallie Brown Fine Arts Center at ECU on October 30th at 7 p.m. The evening includes a benefit concert with local artist Clancy Davis, a young rising star in country music. They will also have a silent auction with items signed by country artists, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton. The response from the community has been generous. Sears donated a TV worth $900, a sorority member’s grandmother donated a handmade quilt, and several businesses contributed gift certificates and gift baskets in addition to a wide variety of merchandise. Tickets are on sale for $10.00. Philanthropy Chair, Melissa York expects the event to draw a big crowd and is excited about doing it again next year. “I’m very excited about it and I hope to do it each year and make it bigger every year. We really want the whole community involved,” said York. “I have a lot of friends and family who have been affected by breast cancer so I’m just really excited to raise money for this.” York says they hope to sell all of their tickets and meet their $10,000 goal. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets or helping with the event may contact Melissa York at 580-3102392.

become a better place,” said Abbott. According to the commission’s chairman, Dexter Pruitt of the Pruitt Company, a town in need of cleanup will be in want of new business and better property values. “It’s pretty hard taking a new business prospect around town when it looks bad. We’ve got a nice town, a really beautiful town but we’ve let it get away from us. Our main project is just trying to clean up the town, getting trash off of porches and we’ve got a lot of bad houses around here. Usually people inherit them and move off, basically abandoning them. It’s strictly a money situation. If you’ve got one bad house on the black it takes away the value from all of them,” said Prewitt. “What we’re trying to do is get these properties back on the market so people can build new home on them.” Overall the commission seems to be working both for the city and its citizens for a common goal. “When Code Enforcement hears from people who complain and then we have a committee of five members telling us the same thing, we have to respond to that.” said Abbott. As to making Ada a more beautiful place to live, Abbott attributed that to the community. “It’s really people who are there and take pride in their homes, without

them nothing will change no matter what we do. There have to be people out there who want to make their neighborhoods better.” As to plans for the future, planting trees, shrubs and flowers will have to wait. “We’ve done a lot of work,” said Pruitt, “and it’s a slow process but we’re making progress.”

The Famous:
McSwain
Theatre by Mindy Wood
I
The popular theatre drew crowds from surrounding towns since Mr. McSwain knew just which movies to show. Films that later became classics like “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Dr. No,” and “Jaws” kept long lines down the street. However, eventually the McSwain’s luck ran out in the 1980’s when it could no longer compete with multi-screen theaters. Today visitors would never know it fell into disrepair. The theatre first received renovation under real estate businessman Paul Alford’s ownership in 1991. His niece, Jae L. Stilwell who is also a professional country music artist, managed the McSwain. They launched new talent like country music artist Blake Shelton and attracted well known personalities like actor and singer Hoyt Axton and special events such as the Boren Axton Awards. Stilwell now performs with the group Jae L. & Crossover as the theater’s house band and continues to manage the McSwain. After Mr. Alford died, the Chickasaw Nation purchased it. “The McSwain Theatre was purchased by the Chickasaw Nation as the result of Governor Bill Anoatubby’s vision to bring back a sense of community to downtown Ada, and restore the theatre that had so many good memories for the Ada area,” said Sheilla >
www.adahub.com
t’s funny how a single moment can affect the direction of a person’s life. For Foster McSwain it was the first time he saw a motion picture in 1910 in Enid, Oklahoma. The experience made such an impression on him he decided to stake his claim in what he predicted to be the next hottest thing in entertainment: moving pictures. When Mr. McSwain moved to Ada in 1917 he wasted no time getting started and purchased Liberty Theater, then the Majestic which he renamed the American. Although motion pictures were in demand, people still liked the vaudeville acts too. The McSwain was designed for both. They showed their first silent film in 1920 but kept the stage open for other entertainment. The theater’s success would span some 60 years and become an icon in Oklahoma’s history. Silver screen stars like Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Susan Hayword, and Robert Preston would grace the grand theatre in downtown Ada. Class acts and country artists from Nashville and Branson would provide the audience with delight, gaining a reputation for great entertainment. The charm and “down home” feel of the place enhanced it’s appeal, winning a place in the hearts of Oklahomans and people passing through.

Brashier, Director of Special Services for the Chickasaw Nation. The theatre again underwent renovation, this time bringing the McSwain back to it’s 1920’s grandeur. The sparkling crystal chandelier inside the entryway, the wood staircase, and the rich dark wood inside the theatre exude a revival of vintage glory. “Although we couldn’t do a complete restoration because there were too many structural challenges to bring it back to what it was in the 1920’s, we did replicate as much as we could. The outside by all accounts is very close to that earliest look. The inside had a lot of wood so we brought that back to life and there were other things we were able to do as well. We also knew that we needed to add some things for modern use of the facility as well,” said Brashier. Once again the theater is drawing traffic from all over the state and nation. October 31st they will host the Colgate Country Music Showdown, a statewide competition bringing the brightest country music hopefuls for a shot at a recording contract in Nashville. “The Colgate Company likes you to have a Nashville artist for that night and we will have Jimmy Wayne, an up and coming entertainer here.” Nationally recognized groups like Jeff and Sheri Easter, a gospel group, and Restless Heart, will perform in October as well. “We’ve been able to bring some well known personalities and we’re proud of that. We opened with Mark Wills, Trent Willmon and Jeff Bates,” said Brashier. Their goal is to offer unique entertainment with everyone in mind. “We have to appeal to a
wide range of people but our goal is to provide entertainment that is family oriented, things that parents aren’t afraid to bring the kids to and enjoy with them.” Reaching out to a wide demographic will include showing classic films on the big screen like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” in December and some old westerns. They also plan to book well known comedians, a musical performed by local talent, and continue showing independent films. “Every month we have a Native American film series showing through the end of the year,” said Brashier. “We plan to show things you can’t find anywhere else.” When the theater opened last month, they received a warm welcome from everyone but especially among older patrons. “We’ve received a lot of comments from them about how nice it looks, how they’re glad we’ve renovated it and having shows here again. It’s been very popular with people who have been here and knew how it looked in the past. We saw different people coming for different types of events and we saw repeat customers. It’s doing what we hoped it would do. It’s bringing people back to the community. That’s making us happy,” said Brashier. Concerts, movies, musicals and comedians promise an audience unforgettable experiences, wholesome and unique entertainment. It looks like the place to be in Ada is once again the McSwain Theatre.
