Dustin Mater, Artist and Illustrator Chickasaw visual artist Dustin Milligan Mater grew up in Ada, Oklahoma. He studied art and design at Santa Monica College and the Multimedia Institute of Hollywood from 2000 to 2004. He first became an illustrator and graphic designer in Los Angeles and became a freelance illustrator and graphic designer in 2007 in Dallas, Texas. by: Sunnie Dawn Smith Dustin began work in 2009 on illustrations and designs for the Chickasaw Nation’s world premiere performance of “Lowak Shoppala’, Fire and Light.” Included in the original script of that production was the story of “Spider Brings Fire.” As a result of that project, he began to create numerous artistic images that has a Fire” mindtooflife, its rekindling own. “Thea close creative Imagine waking one morning to find brought “SpideritBrings connection itch wanted to do something for my your ottoman in the middle ofwith thehis living tribal heritage and his love for visual arts. own He isoddhappily culture.” married toHe wife Titiworked Mater and have a lovely had for they one tribe, room, your two-year-old son looking daughter, Sophie. decorating the carpet in shades of purple. If this happened to you, you might be the mother of local artist Dustin Mater. That snail was more than childish fun, though; it was the beginning of an artistic journey that has taken him halfway across the country, and even further in terms of cultural exploration. Mater moved to Ada from California when he was three in order to be closer to his Chickasaw family. When he was developing into an artist, though, it was not his native heritage that influenced him. Instead, he was enveloped within the culture of comic books and graphic novels. When he returned to California at 18, Mater studied graphic design and delved into the art world more deeply, his influences expanding to include artists like Monet and mathematicians like Fibonacci. He started working as a professional artist, developing storyboards for commercials and designing posters for local bands. He returned to Ada briefly in 2000, staying for only a year, before returning to California—this time moving to Los Angeles. He didn’t realize it at the time, but his native heritage was finally starting to surface. He was, “Becoming homesick for the people,” and jumped at the opportunity to do a commission for the Paiute tribe, illustrating a traditional native story called “The Eagle Catcher.” Mater speaks of his artistic consciousness as if

He was living in Dallas, but had submitted his portfolio to the Chickasaw Nation. In 2009 he received a commission to design the posters for the production of Lowak Shoppala (Fire and Light). The response was so great, that he received further work creating illustrations for one of the sections of the production, Cholhkanat Lowat Ishminti (Spider Brings Fire). Though they were not able to use these for the actual production, they were so impressed with his work that they published a book, using his illustrations with text by Linda Hogan. Since then, Mater has agreed to join the Arts and Humanities division of the Chickasaw Nation as the head of the Graphic Arts and Design Department. He paints, carves shell gorgets, works in copper, sandblasts glass, and even designs tattoos. His design “Spring” is going to be made into a Pendleton blanket in Spring of 2012; you can see two of his works, “Memories of Hope” and “The Riverman” carved into 12 ft panels of glass at the new hospital. He’s finished a 200 page graphic novel entitled The Muskogean, which is a historical science fiction novel about first contact, alternate dimensions, aliens, demons, robots, and Mark Twain. His interests are expansive, as is his view of art. “The world is my medium. I feel like a vector for something larger than myself—like a lightning rod.” One can only wonder what Mater will do next. ■

Founded on Academic Research Have you ever had a friend, neighbor, or financial advisor recommend an investment that will “considerably increase your return/interest with seemingly no additional risk”? If so, I would like to remind you of a simple investment truth: “Risk and Return Are Related”. If Investment “A” is expected to earn 2% and Investment “B” is expected to earn 6%, then “B” is exposing you to higher potential risk(s) than “A”. Does this mean one is better than the other? Absolutely not, however, it does mean Investment “B” must reward investors with a higher expected return in order to compensate them for taking the additional risk(s). Be aware that there is a Risk/Return tradeoff for any investment you make. If you hang on to this simple truth, you will be more likely to pursue your long term financial goals with greater success.

Stylin’ on Main Street Unbridled by: Mindy Wood

If you’re envious of Hollywood stars who have that flair for creating their own look or you dream of having a TV show quality home with a signature décor, look no further than the ladies at Unbridled. The family owned business just moved to Main Street where they offer fashion and décor consultation, specializing in helping customers break out of their box and enjoy something new. September 24th they will celebrate their first anniversary and plan to kick it off with a party including door prizes. It’s been a year that brought surprising success to Dawn Christian, her sister in law Chea and mother in law Vicki. “We were at the lake last summer talking about how people kept asking us where we bought our clothes. We thought about how much fun it would be to own a store and six weeks later we opened in a small barn on Kerr Lab Road last September. A couple weeks ago a space opened on Main street and we were able to expand,” said Dawn Christian. Through word of mouth and their Facebook page, they won business from all over the state and beyond. “That’s been a fun part of the business. We’re shipping out of state and even to Canada.” The secret of their success seems to be reaching a broad spectrum of taste. “We give our customer’s a style that stands out from the rest, that doesn’t look like anybody else. We’re a little

bit country, city, southern all combined. There’s something for everyone. You don’t have to be a cowboy or cowgirl to like our store. We range from high to low end prices so it’s affordable too.” Customers enjoy clothing lines such as Double D Ranch Wear, Tasha Polizzi, and Ranch Royalty. Boots from Old Gringo and Corral and jewelry from Gypsy Soule has been popular. “A lot of stars like Miranda Lambert and the Texas Women wear it. It’s fun to see things like that on TV that we carry here. Some people haven’t heard of these brands before so it’s an education. We were kind of taking a chance to do something like this because if there’s nothing like it in town, it might not work. We just knew we all liked it and we hoped everyone would too.” Dawn and Chea usually handle fashion consultation. “Anyone can put a skirt and a top on but it’s how you put it all together that gives you a distinct look. We help them get out of their box, out of the same rut. Sometimes women come in and they say, ‘oh I can’t wear that,’ and we show them how they can at whatever age they are. We help feel comfortable in something that is going to stand out a little bit, not blending in with everyone else, but fun too so they feel good about what they have on.” The décor side boasts unique furniture pieces and custom made items. Vicki

Chea, Vicki and Dawn

Christian, whose home was featured in the Christmas Home Tour, offers the interior design expertise. “My mother in law redoes furniture and makes table clothes, shower curtains. Customers love the way it’s decorated and people really enjoy our style. We offer everything from rustic and ranchy to elegant and beautiful. We stock paintings, prints, candles, wall crosses and wall art, all kinds of dishes. There really is something for everyone.” Truly a family affair, Dawn said she loves being in business with the people she loves most. “My father in law has built things for us, my husband helps us with moving heavy objects and the kids have a hand in things too. We’re enjoying it and we’re all pretty close. We share the workdays so we can spend time with family.” Don’t miss the party September 24th. Stop by their new location at 111 Main Street or visit their Facebook page title “Unbridled.” ■

by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

Every fall football fever strikes, capturing the hearts and minds of players and community alike. In a town like Ada, this might be truer than in other places. Ada football has a record of excellence that places it not only as one of the top teams in the state, but also the nation. We have 19 state championships to our name, going back to 1951. The football program began, however, in 1912, a mere five years after the first graduating class. Since then, over 2,000 young men have taken the field for Ada--99 achieving All-State. Many have gone on to play college ball, some becoming professional. The program did not begin as the highly competitive endeavor it became. It evolved into what it is today over the course of decades. In the beginning, football was just another tool that educators had to make physical education fun and interesting. Still, however, this did not keep Ada High from winning—first a 12-6 victory against Maud and then a 13-3 victory against ECU. Now, in its hundredth year, Ada High football has an astounding overall record, with 747 wins to 303 losses and only 24 ties. The current milestone provides not only an opportunity to celebrate the history of this team, but also a chance to have a massive reunion, a very special

homecoming. On Thursday, September 22nd, the school will be hosting a reunion and reception for all the former players that they can find. Some of those who will be in attendance played football for Ada as far back as the 1940s. Sadly, “Fireball” Evans, who played in the 1930s, recently passed away, but that does not mean that he won’t be there in everyone’s thoughts. The following evening, Friday, September 23rd, is Ada’s second home game of the season. They will be playing Oklahoma City Southeast, and, of course, everyone is encouraged to attend. A special section will be provided for the former players and they will be recognized. The classes of 1961 and 1971 are both having their reunions that same weekend and the basketball team will have their hamburger fry. The weekend will also kick off an all sports Lettermen club. All in all, that weekend will prove to be an extravaganza of memories, camaraderie, and school spirit. In addition to the festivities, merchandise and memorabilia will be available. A special logo has been designed which now emblazons hats and shirts. Joe Claxton and Mike Cowan have co-authored a book detailing the 100-year history of Ada High School football. You can also purchase a DVD recounting the history of the team, complete with highlights from previous

games. Perhaps most exciting though, will be the opportunity to purchase individual state championship games in their entirety, going back to 1951. Fifteen of the nineteen games have been located and transferred to digital format. They are still trying to find copies of the 1956, 1957, 1965, and 1970 state championship games and any help would be appreciated. All proceeds from the sales of merchandise will go directly into the athletic department, helping the school provide what it can for our students— because that is what it truly important. Of course, it is nice to win and feel pride in the excellence of our programs. However, as Mike Anderson, athletic director for the Ada City School System says, “Competitive athletics is an opportunity to teach young people a lot of life’s lessons and values—what it means to sacrifice, what it means to be a good team player, that things don’t always go your way.” So come out the weekend of September 22nd to support your school, both past and present. And be sure to support your 100th anniversary Ada Cougar football team. For more information, contact Mike Anderson at (580) 310-7215 or email him at mikeandersoncougars@ gmail.com. ■ www.adahub.com • 13

no girls allowed by: Angella Bryan

Salty, Rough, maybe a little scary. Hardly any way to describe women’s sports, the most popular of which usually involve some form of leotard and a whole lot of choreography and glitter. Definitely no girly-girls in the sport of roller derby, which has made a big comeback in the last few years thanks in part to the Drew Barrymore film Whip It. In fact the movie is what inspired an East Central University graduate student to pursue the sport a year ago. Katie Hoff joined the Arbuckle Derby Darlings around the time they formed in May of 2010. “I watched Whip It and got interested. I looked online to see if there were any local teams and found the one in Arbuckle,” said Hoff a 2003 graduate of Konawa High School. “When I first joined I just learned the basics of skating.” The “basics” can be scary when you have to train yourself to fall forward (a single knee or double knee fall so the skaters can fall on their pads). The skaters also have to be in good physical condition to pass the minimum skills requirement test which includes skating 25 laps in five minutes. “We have to be able to give and receive Whips also, which is grabbing someone and pulling them in front of you to give them extra speed. The first game I competed in I 14 • www.adahub.com

got knocked down a lot and I had a bunch of bruises, but I got MVP. I think they felt sorry for me,” laughs Hoff. Sam Griffin, also known as the Dame O’ Shame, is an ECU senior whose love for the sport left her badly injured at the end of May. “I dislocated three fingers, had multiple fractures in my hand and a bruised sternum.” She played down her injury so she wouldn’t have to stop and competed for another three hours. Although Griffin’s parents attend nearly every event, the prospect of being hurt is what keeps her grandma out of the audience, which can number up to 300 fans, at the Arbuckle Ballroom. “My injuries just about killed my grandma,” laughs Griffin. “She said you couldn’t give her a million dollars to watch me play. After I was hurt she offered to pay all my bills if I would just quit.” “I told her not to worry I’m the one that hurts them.” Just being tough is definitely not enough for this sport. “The funniest thing to me is meeting someone who is all bad and talking big and then they get in the rink and they are hanging on to the other skaters to keep from falling and are scared to death,” says Griffin. Griffin was first interested in joining

the roller derby after her older sister joined a team in St. Louis three years ago. She made up her mind to join after watching Whip It and as she puts it, “That was it.” Griffin is quick to point out that the hair pulling, barroom brawl atmosphere of the 70’s roller derby era are over. In fact a skater can only hit with their shoulders or hips, no punching, shoving or elbows. Violators are sent to the penalty box for a minute. “There are twice as many rules as basketball or baseball, I don’t know of any other sport that has so many rules. The rule book is 48 pages long. The guidelines are set by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.” Men shouldn’t feel too left out. “Guys can come practice with us, just not compete. Those who are wanting to become referees need the practice and some practice with us,” says Hoff. “The fact is, anyone can come to practice and we can teach them to skate.” The Arbuckle Derby Darlings will compete against the Poteau SisterHood of Steel September 18th at Star Skate in Ada. Tickets are $7 at the door. ■

Who’s in Charge? Our Local Government

One of the Ada Hub’s loyal readers submitted a series of questions in regards to how the City of Ada’s government functions and how it compares to other cities in the state. All the cities and towns in Oklahoma are governed by laws enacted by the state legislature. These laws allow communities to select from the following options for their local government structure: town, aldermanic, council-manager, strongmayor, and home-rule charter. Each form offers different management options and checks and balances. The City of Ada utilizes the councilmanage form, in which four council members are elected from their ward and one is elected at large. The council members then elect a mayor and vice mayor every year. The council is also responsible for hiring a city manager. The city manager functions as the chief executive officer of the city and manages departments, employees, and prepares the budget and make recommendations to the council. The mayor presides at council meetings, votes on all issues, signs ordinances and commissions. Council members are responsible for enacting ordinances, creating/changing city departments, and

appointing members to city boards and commissions. Ada’s council members are elected to two-year terms and the mayor serves a one year term because by law one council cannot pass regulations that would restrict the ability of a new council to perform their duties. A council member can be elected to serve consecutive terms as mayor. Roughly 5% of the communities in Oklahoma use this form of government. The most popular form in Oklahoma is the town form, which consists of a board of trustees who are either elected from wards or at large. A mayor is elected from the board and serves mainly as the head of government for ceremonial purposes. The board of trustees much like in the council form enact ordinances, raise revenues, and create departments. There is also a city clerk and city treasurer that are either appointed or elected. Those positions help to manage records and oversee the financial business of the community. Over 73% of Oklahoma communities use this form. The strong-mayor form of government is utilized by less than 1% of Oklahoma cities. A mayor is elected at large

and serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the city. The mayor’s duties are similar to Ada’s city manager. A council is elected from the wards and has similar responsibilities to Ada’s council. The aldermanic form consists of a mayor elected at large and ward-elected council members. The mayor presides at meetings but doesn’t vote except when there is a tie. This form is similar to the US Government because the mayor can veto ordinances and resolutions, but these can be overridden with a 2/3 vote of the council. The mayor is responsible for developing the budget, but a city clerk, city treasurer and other officers are responsible for managing records and overseeing the city’s business. The options for local government in Oklahoma vary greatly and are often chosen at the time the city first adopts it’s charter. The forms of government can be changed a by an election when the proposal to change is submitted to a vote of the people. Each form never functions perfectly, but all are designed with checks and balances to insure a balance of power. If you have questions, please send them to askCharlie@sbcglobal.net. ■
