Equipped TOCare by Ada Hub Staff
Equip Care is a medical supplies and equipment business located here in Ada at 439 N. Monte Vista, just across the street from Valley View Regional Hospital. The business was started by Claire and Dusty Dennis in 2000. Equip Care provides a wide range of home medical and safety equipment including hospital beds, wheelchairs, oxygen and various other specialty home medical needs. Equip Care understands the urgency of many needs and offers 24-hour set up and delivery service. Claire Dennis recognized the opportunity for a medical supplies and equipment business in Ada. In 1999, her husband Dusty, a physical therapist, had opened an office in Tishomingo. He suggested Claire open her new business in his building, but the couple determined Ada would be the best place for Equip Care. Claire grew up in Humboldt, Kan., and had always been fond of Ada. She spent her summers here as a girl with her great-grandparents Noah and Will Abbott. “The friendly people, constant improvement and quality doctors and hospital made moving to Ada an easy decision,” Claire said. Dusty and Claire married in 1995 and Claire began her first job with First National Bank, now
Vision Bank. Claire has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Oklahoma Christian University. The Dennis’ have three children, Macy, 11, Kali, 9, and Tucker, 3. The family lives on a ranch near Pontotoc and the whole family loves the outdoors. Claire enjoys running. She runs with friends and has competed in marathons. The Dennis’ are members at Southwest Church of Christ. Dusty and Claire are both Sunday School teachers. Equip Care has a respiratory therapist on staff, and the same quality Equip Care employees have been with the business since its inception.

Ask When first joining a gym, all people can see the benefits that a membership to a gym will bring them. You start off extremely motivated and may, or may not, know what routine you will use to reach your goals. If you are like most, though, you might panic at the mere sight of these gargantuan heaps of steel and small cushions to hesitantly place your body. Everyone seems to be looking at you and KNOW that you have no clue what you are doing. You sit down anyway and do a few reps, because, let’s face it, you’re here and you did pay for a month. What do you do after that first month of “newness” wears off? How do you keep your goals in sight and motivate yourself to getting back to working out?
Some tips for motivation:
1. Music. Find your favorite music and take it with you. Whether it is hard rock, rap, or anything else you find enjoyable, pop it in your mp3 player and get to work. Before you know it, its over and you feel great! 2. Find a workout partner. You’ve heard of strength in numbers, well it works for fitness, too. Your workout partner will be expecting you to go with them and some days you will have to return the favor and motivate them to get up and go! You can use each other to keep up with your day to day routine.
3. Find a gym that isn’t a gym. That might sound impossible, but if you look, its out there. Find that place that does not feel like a gym when you get there. You are comfortable asking questions because the staff is friendly and is excited about you being there. If it doesn’t feel like the typical gym, then it won’t feel like torture because that’s why you didn’t stick with the last membership, right? 4. Find a qualified person trainer. When all else fails, take the thinking out of the equation. These qualified personal trainers that have credible certifications like NSCA and ACE. These individuals have put a lot of effort into gaining that knowledge to keep you motivated and reach your goals. You could even use them just to get you set in the right direction. 5. Find a gym that offers “out of the box” alternatives. This could be anything from classes two times a week, clubs that are offered within the club or anything else that gym thinks up. Don’t be afraid to approach the faculty of your gym and tell them about your idea for an alternative to running on the treadmill, they’ll listen!! Do you have a fitness question for Gym 210? books Just One Wish
Little Bee
Written by Janette Raliison
Written by Chris Cleave
“Just One Wishâ€? is funny, sweet, and easily relatable. The heroine, Annika, is desperate to help her little brother Jeremy, who has brain cancer. In an attempt to raise Jeremy’s spirits, Annnika pretends that a genie is offering him one wish, certain that he would ask for the Teen Robin Hood action figure that she’s already bought. Instead, he asks for the real Teen Robin Hood—a coincidentally young, good-looking TV star—to teach him archery. Being a dedicated sister, and more than a little desperate, Annika sets off to find Robin Hood—and predictably gets into more than her share of shenanigans along the way. Like most of this author’s books, “Just One Wishâ€? is generally light and funny‌but it also has a surprisingly serious side. There are few quick fixes or miracles, true to the nature of real life. The ending is sobering, especially for younger readers.
of the month
As with many books, Little Bee by Chris Cleave is also available as an unabridged audio book. Narrator Anne Flosnik is an accomplished actress, and her narration is impressive. Cleave lives in London and is a journalist for the Guardian newspaper. His first novel, Incendiary, won the 2006 Somerset Maugham Award, was shortlisted for the 2006 Commonwealth Writers Prize, and won the Prix Special du Jury at the French Prix des Lecturers 2007. His latest novel, Little Bee, is highly reviewed and should be another award winner. Cleave’s unique novel is told from the perspectives of both Sarah and Little Bee to further emphasize the different lives, cultural backgrounds, and the emotional connection that develops and endures between the two women. This is a powerful book that tells a story that will carry you away and stay with you long after its ending. It is that good.

he said. The “little ol’ gal” was Betty Pruitt, his wife of 58 years. The couple still lives in Ada. While working for the Sachs family at Ada Iron and Metal for the next nine years, Mr. Pruitt displayed some entrepreneurial spirit by opening a grocery store at Sixth and Broadway. “That’s when Broadway was a two-lane road,” he said. He learned that the grocery store was “a real tough business.” But his promise had been noticed. A local businessman, Asa Hutchinson, approached Mr. Pruitt and offered to back him in any business he chose. “I thought about that a while,” he said, “and I decided if I could make a living for two people, I could probably go out and make one for myself.” It was 1962, and with great enthusiasm – and virtually no capital – he started a welding supply and scrap metal business. He knew the business would be tough to get going, and he soon realized the hours were punishing. “When you’re in business for yourself, it simply takes complete dedication,” he said. “You are just working all the time.” About a year after he started the business, older brother A.D. joined him. “He decided he would come over and starve to death with me,” Mr. Pruitt said. “But he was a bookkeeper and that helped tremendously. I didn’t know much about accounting at the time, so I worked and he kept the books!” Local business people who have been around a while will tell you Mr. Pruitt is very good at spotting opportunities. “I guess I can recognize a good deal about fifty- >

exter Pruitt had to grow up fast. The owner of several very successful Ada businesses, Mr. Pruitt, 75, was only 15 when his mother died. He believed he had choices to make, and he made them quickly. “After my mom died, my dad and I really didn’t have a place to land,” he said. “It was kind of a stupid decision, but I thought I needed to get out into the world and work.” At 15 and having just completed the eighth grade, he joined the Army National Guard. “I lied about my age to get in and I spent my 16th birthday at Fort Sill,” he said. “They didn’t find out I wasn’t 18 until they mobilized the unit and they discharged me.” The mobilization in advance of the Korean War sent the 16-year-old veteran back to Ada. It was 1949 and the young Mr. Pruitt was hot on the trail of his next job. “It was clear to me I had to work to live, and I was fortunate to land a job with Spann Motor Company,” he said. The local Dodge dealer employed Mr. Pruitt to drive big trucks from Detroit to Ada to deliver cars and trucks to the dealership. “We made five dollars a day, plus expenses,” Mr. Pruitt said. “Boy, we thought we were getting rich! Of course, you had to make it back to Ada within five days to collect. That was a challenge in those days.” At 17, he began working for a company laying natural gas pipeline. He had picked up the welding trade from his older brother, A.D., who worked at Ada Iron and Metal. Mr. Pruitt built pipeline up through Nebraska and Iowa. “Then I came back to Ada in 1952 and I met a little ol’ gal, and I decided it was time to stay put,”

five percent of the time, which is good enough,” he said. In 1964, he determined he could build structural steel buildings out of old oil derricks. He would negotiate the purchase of the old steel, then use the material to build the buildings he sold to clients. “We got the cost of materials down to about nothing,” Mr. Pruitt said. “That turned out to be a great deal, and we built good buildings.” From that point forward, Mr. Pruitt has grown his local businesses and answered opportunity’s knock. He owns Pruitt Company, the welding supply company started in 1962, as well as Pruitt Care, churchby his a local medical supply company managed daughter, Tammy Prentiss. He also has a real estate investment company. What are the secrets to business success? church “You’ve got to get into something that pays you 24/7,” Mr. Pruitt said. “From the day I started, I always looked for good opportunities to invest in. I looked for something that would make money.” church Business, he said, hasn’t really changed in the 47 years since he started the welding supply business. “Money is relative,” he said. “When I started, a loaf of bread was a dime. Now it’s two dollars. church But we had to work just as hard to make that dime back in 1962 as we have to work now to make two dollars.”

For people just starting in business, Mr. Pruitt preaches self-control. “I made payroll to welders for five years and all that time they were making more than I was,” he said. “You must live a little lower than your means, and always be on the lookout for good opportunities to invest in.” Today, Mr. Pruitt still rises early and works a 10-hour day. “The only opportunity in life to really get ahead is to own your own business,” he said. “And it becomes a situation where it’s not about the money. It’s about providing for your family and just doing a good job.”

Night Out
18
by Ann Miller
On June 18, 1998 the Ada Jobs Foundation, Ada’s economic development foundation, was incorporated. It seemed only fitting that on exactly the 11th anniversary of this day that the Inaugural Business & Industry Night Out be held. Business and Industry Night Out was Business and Industry Appreciation Week’s crowning achievement. This red carpet event highlighted the achievements of Ada area businesses over the past year(s). Senator Susan Paddack was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and helped to present awards to local businesses. The awards, now referred to as the Globies, are similar to the Oscars for businesses in Ada. Businesses were nominated for the following award categories: New Business, Entrepreneurship, Innovations, Environmental, Ambassador, Small, Medium, and Large Employer of the Year, and Economic Development Leader of the Year. During the nominations process, countless intriguing facts about local businesses emerged. The nomination review committee stated that it was difficult to decide on a winner because we were so impressed with all the nominees. The first Globie, the New Business of the Year Award was awarded to Bolitho Ventures, Inc. Bolitho Ventures operates Home & Investment Properties Real Estate Guide, Ada Hub Magazine, and the Ada Hub Store. This business was started by a young professional who recognized and decided to address the unmet needs of local residents. ProDepot which operates ProDepot.com, an internet marketplace for professionals to offers their services, won the Entrepreneurship Award. Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. was awarded the Ambassador award, which recognizes a business that works to promote Ada as a potential business location. Tornado Alley Turbo, Inc. (TATI) won the Innovations Award for creating new and
innovative products for the aviation industry. Since 1998, TATI has been creating aftermarket turbo-normalizing systems for a variety of aircraft. In 2006, TATI’s engineers designed a system for the Cirrus SR22, the world’s best selling airplane. Cirrus recognized the superiority of this product and entered into an agreement with TATI to sell their system as a factory installed option, which 75% of all Cirrus purchases now include TATI’s system. Holcim in partnership with their subsidiary Geocycle was deemed the “greenest” company and was awarded the Environmental Award. Holcim and its employees are committed to reducing their carbon footprints. Holcim is responsible for trees being planted in the area and helped to create Opt 4 Green, a local group focused on the environment. Geocycle has saved over 15 million tires from landfills in Oklahoma since 2005. The Employer of the Year Awards recognize the Small (50 or fewer employees), Medium (51200 employees) and the Large (201+ employees) for their achievements in promoting employee growth and development. GLOBE Manufacturing was awarded Small Employer of the Year. The award for Medium Employer of the Year went to Holcim, while the Chickasaw Nation was named the Large Employer of the Year. Dexter Pruitt of Pruitt Company of Ada and Pruitt Care was named the Economic Development Leader of the Year for his lifelong commitment to Ada’s economic development. Plans are currently underway for next year’s Business and Industry Appreciation Week. The Ada Jobs Foundation will begin accepting nominations for the 2010 Globies in January.
