received there while being trained to be the best doctor possible,” she said. “It was a very supportive environment where the love of Christ was on display every day.” As a young girl, Dr. Ortega said she was pretty sure she wanted to be a physician. “I considered a few other things, such as law and teaching,” she said. “But by the time I was in ninth grade, I had made my mind up pretty firmly that I was going to be a doctor.” Becoming a physician is a decision Dr. Ortega has never regretted. “I like to see people make positive changes and take ownership of their own health,” she said. “I see my role as being an educated advisor who helps guide people into being their best advocate.” Searching one’s heart, Dr. Ortega said, helps lead to a career in medicine. Taking the time to figure out why you want to become a physician, she said, is very important. “If someone wants to be a doctor, I would recommend they spend time just hanging out with a doctor to see what that life is really like,” she said. “Once they have a good look and want to move forward, they can get tips on applying to medical school, residency selection and more.” Dr. Ortega is Board Certified in Family Medicine by the American Academy of Family Physicians. She is a member of the Valley View Regional Hospital medical staff. Her office is located near the hospital at 503 N. Monte Vista, Suite B. The website is www. abundantlifeada.com Health Tip: Have you reached a plateau in your workouts? Try mixing things up a little. Alternate 2 or 3 different cardiovascular workouts and try inserting 30 second high impact bursts into your normal paced routine.

Family Medicine physicians rarely have a “routine day.” Just ask Ada Family Medicine physician Leandrita Ortega, M.D. “My favorite thing about my job and my specialty is that no two days are ever alike,” Dr. Ortega said. “Just a few days ago, I had a full day in the clinic, plus I had the privilege of helping two beautiful babies into the world. Some people thrive on routine, but I thrive on variety. It keeps me on my toes!” Dr. Ortega opened her practice in Ada in 2006, and she has been steadily building her practice since that time. “I am learning how to take better care of myself so I can more effectively care for my patients and their families,” Dr. Ortega said. “It can get very busy, and sometimes I get to the end of the day feeling drained. But, by the next day, I am ready to go again!” Dr. Ortega earned her medical degree in 2003 from the University of New Mexico. She received her bachelor’s degree from Mount Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles. She takes pride in the fact she is the first medical doctor in her family. “The main hardship during medical school was the sacrifice of time for personal relationships and hobbies,” Dr. Ortega said. “Despite that, I was able to build my family during those years.” Following medical school, Dr. Ortega was ready to take on the life and work of a resident. Medical residency programs are notorious for their rigorous discipline and the hours required. “Residency for many people is one of the hardest times in their lives because of the demands on time and energy,” Dr. Ortega said. “For me, residency training was one of the best times in my life because of the people I was with, from the attending physicians to the residents to the staff.” For Dr. Ortega, her residency opened up new ways to look at medicine. “I will never forget the love and support I

WOMEN OF ADA BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL

ven though a large part of the community may not know who they are or exactly what it is they do, members of the Ada Business and Professional Women chapter are continuing today in an effort that began more than eighty years ago. Since 1926, women from the Ada area have put heart and soul into the ongoing effort to improve working conditions for professional females, and today’s members are not about to let up. “It’s all about making things better for women in the workplace,” said ADA BPW President Mary Ruth Barnes, a longtime BPW member. “It’s not about – and it has never been about – taking anything away from men in the workplace. It has always been about making things fair and equitable for women in the workplace. Everything BPW has done, everything it stands for, has to do with taking away the disadvantages that have existed in the workplace against professional women.” Ann Miller, Manager of Marketing Research for Ada Jobs Foundation, will take the groups presidential reins next month. She has many professional goals, but her vision as BPW President is to continue to make strides and to make the local chapter more publicly visible. “I truly believe BPW is an awesome organization, on a national, state and local basis,” Miller said. “But I think we locally can do

more to become more technologically aware and advanced, and I think we can do more to present ourselves to the public in a way that might make them more aware of who we are and what exactly we stand for.” In addition to a great deal of lobbying legislators on a local, state and national basis, BPW groups across the country highlight their efforts at “workplace changes” each April with Equal Pay Day. This year’s event will be April 28, and BPW members across the country will wear red to work to signify their support of equal pay for equal work – one of the most difficult changes for which BPW chapters have battle to achieve. “We have come a long, long way in making things better in the workplace for women the past 25 or 30 years,” Barnes said. “But we’re not to the point yet where it’s fair and equitable. All we ask is that women who perform professional jobs are financially rewarded on the same level as men who do the same jobs. We’re getting closer, but we’re still not there.” The Ada Chapter, moving into its 83rd year of existence, is one of the larger and more active chapters in Oklahoma. They have had state presidents – most recently Glenda DeShazo, who now serves as Area 7 Representative – covering five states in the Oklahoma region. The group has sold war bonds during World War II and has supplied appliances such as braces, crutches and glasses for special needs >

children in its history. At one time, the group even operated a girls’ home which offered small salaries to girls during the Depression in 1935, and has been intricately involved in numerous community projects throughout the years. Currently, the Ada chapter continues to support the Outstanding 4-H girl in Pontotoc County, the City of Ada’s Spirit of Christmas celebration, Helping Hands, the Salvation Army, Back to School Basics campaign and many other local events. Although she will relinquish the seat of Ada BPW President next month, Barnes said

she plans to continue her service to the Ada community, to women across the country, and to the ADA BPW chapter as long as possible. “There were so many great and dedicated women who came to this effort before me and there will be so many with great ideas, vision and energy in the future,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see young professional women like Ann Miller taking the reins and we, of course, will give her our full support as a chapter and I hope the community of Ada also supports the great work this group will continue to do.”

ames Marcus Gordon was selected as the second president of East Central State Normal School on May 20, 1916. Gordon had previously served as the dean of Trinity University in Waxahachie, Texas. Gordon’s term is marked by the effects WWI had on campus. He is credited with the establishment of a Student Army Training Corps on campus that helped keep the college’s doors open and the commissioning of the memorial gateway in front of Science Hall that is dedicated to the ECU students who died in the war. President Gordon served at ECSNS until June 1, 1920, at which time he took the position as president at Henry Kendall College in Tulsa.

A Never Say Die

RAGS TO RICHES Success Story

Kennith Moore is a ground floor kind of guy. He has started businesses from scratch and watched them slowly die, only to get right back up on the horse that tossed him. His entrepreneurial spirit will never go quietly.

Ken and Shirlene became Pre-Paid Associates in 1984. “At that time, we only worked the business part-time,” Ken says. “We then realized the potential that was with Pre-Paid Legal.” “Our first full-time six months with PrePaid Legal, we made $48,600 marketing a $10 membership,” Ken remembers. “That is the least amount we have ever made in any six-month period with Pre-Paid Legal. Needless to say, we have been excited ever since!” In fact, Ken says, “Everyday, I still get excited about Pre-Paid Legal. Each time I hear the product presentation or the opportunity, I want to sign up all over again!” Today Kennith Moore’s income is in excess of $500,000 per year, an income he earned the old-fashioned way, not based on his education, social status, or where he was born, but earned by persistency (not enough sense to know when to quit) and belief in the concept of “Justice for All!” “By helping others become successful, we have become successful,” said Ken. The Moores advise Associates to ask prospects if, in their present job, they can be financially secure in five years. “When they say no,” Ken reveals, “simply say, ‘Mr. Prospect, if I can show you that opportunity, then you owe it to yourself and your family to allow me 30 minutes of your time. Don’t you?’” Ken and Shirlene Moore are living out their dreams in the capitol of Pre-Paid Legal — Ada, Oklahoma. In 1999, they reached the level of Platinum 4 Executive Directors. Ask Moore about being able to enjoy his colleagues and a cup of coffee in the company’s restaurant and he beams with pride. >

www.adahub.com

On any given morning, you will find him at his usual table in the Eagle’s View Restaurant sipping coffee and visiting with everyone that walks by. These days, he knows how lucky he is to be there. The Eagle’s View Restaurant, you see, is smack dab in the middle of the Pre-Paid Legal Services®, Inc. headquarters. It is a company that Moore has played a vital role in building over the past two decades as one of the most successful independent associates in the company’s history. He’s now Pre-Paid Legal’s Executive Vice President, and has been honored with two of the company’s most prestigious awards. It’s been a long road to get there, though. After shutting down his butcher shop and slaughterhouse businesses, and with little or nothing to show for it, Moore was unsure what would come next. With few options, he grabbed onto a business opportunity that he had been ignoring for years. “Before, I was too busy going broke to listen,” Moore said with a grin. Once he got started, however, there was no stopping. Now, more than 20 years later, Moore is happy that he seized upon the opportunity, even if he had to hit bottom first. He is proud to have been a part of the rapid growth of PrePaid Legal, and, indeed, Moore has been one of the people that Pre-Paid Legal CEO and founder Harland Stonecipher counted on along the way. “Kennith Moore is a real life example of ‘only in America’ and the free enterprise system at work at its best,” Stonecipher said. “He is truly a rags to riches story.”

Randy, Kennith, Braden, and Jeremy Moore

continued from pg. 13

“I have to give Mr. Stonecipher and Wilburn Smith all the credit in the world,” Moore said. “They’ve been my mentors on this journey and I owe them a lot.” This deep gratitude towards others is not unique from a man who, not long ago, was released from the hospital for what he believes was his 29th stay. Forgive him if he’s lost count. “They’ve lost me twice on the operating table, but I guess God isn’t done using me just yet,” Moore said. “If it wasn’t for Him, some of the best surgeons around, and having something to come and do everyday, I don’t think I’d still be here.” That same boot leather toughness has also served him well professionally. With a resume that includes having several of his own businesses thrive and then decline, Moore never let past entrepreneurial setbacks keep him from continuing to achieve. “Right now, I couldn’t be any happier,” Moore said. “I get to come do something I love, with people that love me. I’ve been partners in family, life and business with my wife Shirlene for more than 50 years now, and because Pre-Paid is a company with such honor and integrity, my son Randy and his son have now started with us full time.” The Moore family is the first three-generation family to wear Pre-Paid Legal’s status symbol of success – the six-figure income ring. “It’s a great feeling of honor and pride,” said Ken Moore. “I’m proud of what accomplishments we’ve had as a team and as a family. We expect to accomplish much more with our fourth generation.” Ken’s son, Randy stated, “I’m extremely proud to be a part of the Pre-Paid Legal family, and I’m even more proud to be a part of continuing this tradition that my father began and pass it on to my son and grandson.” And, Randy’s son, Jeremy added, “I think it speaks to the integrity of Pre-Paid Legal and the power of the Pre-Paid Legal product to be the third generation to earn a six-figure income with this company.” Jeremy’s young son, Braden, is an

Kennith and Shirlene Moore

honorary Pre-Paid Legal Associate and is ready to continue in his family’s tradition when the time comes. A living example of how to fight through adversity, whether from failed business ventures or the many health challenges, Ken Moore continues to overcome. He is a tribute to the never-say-die Oklahoma spirit. Now embarking on his seventh decade, and far from the retiring sort, most mornings you can find him in his coat and tie sipping coffee before 7 a.m. at his table in the Eagle’s View Restaurant, a few steps around the corner from his office, fittingly located on the ground floor of the Home Office building. Braden Moore holds his “Official Certificate” making him an “Honorary Associate” and a fifth generation member of the Moore Success team. The certificate is signed by Harland Stonecipher, Wilburn Smith, Papa Randy Moore and Papa Kennith Moore.

What’s Age Got to do with it?

Written by Scott WesterďŹ eld

Written by Robin McGraw

Tally Youngblood excitedly awaits her sixteenth birthday and the chance to become one of the Pretties, a society of perfect humans whose life is one party and thrill after another. Shay, another soonto-be sixteen, shares Tally’s excitement for daring hoverboard rides and pranks. But unlike Tally, Shay does not see the coming-of-age operation as a positive one and secretly plans to run away to the renegade settlement known as the Smoke. When Shay disappears one week before the operation, the evil Dr. Cable forces Tally to expose her friend and the rebel settlement or remain ugly forever. As Tally questions her betrayal and her own feelings about becoming pretty, the choices she makes will change her world forever. This futuristic and action packed story will draw readers toward the exciting cliff-hanger ending. Readers will anxiously anticipate the next novel in this thought provoking series. Scott WesterďŹ eld has been writing science ďŹ ction novels for many years for both adult and young adult readers. His award winning books for young adults which have been on best seller lists include: The Midnighters Trilogy, The Last Days, So Yesterday, Pretties, Specials, and Extras.

Robin McGraw’s new book details what she does to look and feel energetic and healthy. Robin says, “I wrote this book, not only to answer questions about what I do to stay healthy and in shape, but to remind women that it’s time to move yourself to the top of your list of priorities. It’s never too early to start taking care of yourself, but it’s also never ever too late.â€? In Dallas and now in Los Angeles, Robin, the wife of Dr. Phil, has consulted top physicians and specialists, personal trainers, nutritionists, make-up artists, fashion gurus and family and friends. She shares what works for her and her family. Her information may be too basic for many readers. Individual budgets have to be considered, as well as individual lifestyles. The reader may want to take advantage of some suggestions and pass others by. This reader will not be trying on 50 pairs of jeans to ďŹ nd the perfect pair, or wearing a pair of high heels to tie an outďŹ t together. Robin emphasizes that at the top of every woman’s list should be their own health. Reserve time each day to do something relaxing that brings joy: meditate, soak in a tub, listen to music, exercise, read.

Knighten Brothers Surpass 70 Years of Service

by Roy Deering

www.adahub.com

earl Knighten has seen a lot of changes in his nearly 35 years working for the City of Ada. After three-plus decades of service, Knighten has seniority over almost every other city employee. But there is one city worker whose time of service surpasses even Jearl’s. His “little” brother, City Park Superintendent Don Knighten, celebrated his 36th anniversary with the City of Ada on March 3. “I’ve been around a long, long time with the city,” Jearl Knighten said when asked about his around City Hall. “But he’s been here a little longer. I came to the City of Ada in May of 1974, but he had already been here for over a year when I started working, so I guess he’s got me by a little.” Jearl works in General Maintenance for the city, meaning he spends a lot of his time inside checking heating and air conditioning systems and repairing mechanical things at various cityowned buildings. He does work outside from time to time, and is part of the group responsible for overseeing maintenance and upkeep on all city buildings and facilities. Don, on the other hand, spends most of his time outside. As Park Supervisor, he is responsible for the crews that do work at the various city parks and other properties, including the airport and highway medians coming into the city. Jearl, 64, worked at Rosedale Cemetery for 13 years before transferring to the General Maintenance department, where he’s spent the last 22 years. He said he enjoys the work for a number of reasons, including the people who share his workday every day. “It’s a great place to work,” Jearl said, “or I wouldn’t still be here. I like it. I like the people and I like the work. It’s never boring because we always have something different to do. Even on the same day we might work in a half-dozen different places doing a half-dozen different things.” Don, now 54, started working for the city at a much younger age than his older brother. He said his love for being outdoors has helped make the past 36 years enjoyable. “First, like Jearl said, the City [of Ada] is a

Don and Jearl Knighten

great place to work,” Don said. “But I like my job in particular because I love to be outside. I couldn’t stand to be cooped up in an office or in a building all day every day. If I had done that for 36 years, I think I’d go crazy.” Don said it seems impossible that he’s been with the city for 36 years, he said he doesn’t regret the decision he made back in the early 1970s to take the job. “It really doesn’t seem that long, but it’s been fun,” he said. “There have been a lot of changes, both in Ada itself as a city and in the structure of the city’s government and employees. I’ve had a chance to watch Ada grow and change through the years and that’s been really exciting.” Through those 36 years, Don figures he’s spent “thousands” of hours mowing and weedeating at various city-owned properties. From Wintersmith and Glenwood to Harris and some of the other smaller parks, Don and his crews spend a lot of time keeping things neatly trimmed and presentable. “We’ve got some great people in this department, like the other departments of the city,” Don said. “They all work hard and try their best, always, to make this city and its buildings and parks and other properties the best they can be.” Jearl also takes great pride in being an employee of the City of Ada, saying there’s no other job he’s seen in 30 years that has tempted him away. “The city has the best employees anywhere,” he said. “They’re good at what they do and they love serving the people of this town.” Despite the fact that each has surpassed 35 years service to the city, neither Don nor Jearl has retirement in their sites in the next few years. Jearl said he doesn’t know when he’ll retire and that he seldom thinks about it. Don, however, said he has “sort of” decided to work about 10 more years for the city before he heads out to his cattle ranch for good. “I realize I’d be close to 50 years if I worked another 10,” he laughed. “But I don’t know that I can make it that long. I think 10 more years will just about do me in, and then I’ll spend more time working with my cattle because I really, really enjoy that.”
