Thanksgiving. It’s the time of year for turkey and dressing, mom’s homeade mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie... I should stop there to prevent any further drool from getting on the magazine! But it’s not just a time for great food, it’s a time to be thankful (and watch football). I would like to personally thank all of the Ada Hub advertisers and readers for a great beginning! We look forward to many years of sharing local stories and businesses. And if you have any ideas that you think would make the Ada Hub even better, email us at info@adahub.com

Most importantly don’t forget, this is a season of gratitude! Take some time to appreciate even the smallest blessings in your life (even if it is your fantasy football team). And for those of you that wake up every morning and aren’t thankful for anything..... just remember, you woke up, didn’t you?

Making a

Big

by: Roy Deering

Impression

What started out as a short-term project for last year’s Fire Prevention Week has turned into one of the most popular engines in the Ada Fire Department’s entire fleet. The “Mini 10” engine, a small pumping unit built on a golf cart body, is in its second year of service out of the Ada Central Fire Station, coming to a parade near you again soon. “It’s kind of funny, how popular it is,” said Tommy Keefer, designer of the little engine that has become such a big hit. “We put it together last year and didn’t really have any idea it was going to be so popular, but the kids really love it, and it grabs their attention when we’re putting on any kind of demonstration.” A two-year veteran of the Ada Fire Department and a graduate of Byng High School, the 28-year-old Keefer said he was approached last year and asked to construct a temporary fire engine that could be used in the department’s annual Fire Prevention Week demonstrations. He considered simply putting together a cardboard fire engine that would be “good enough” to get through the week’s various school demonstrations, but decided instead to make the engine more realistic.

Fire Department’s “Mini 10”

“I didn’t really see the point in putting time in to build something that we were just going to throw away when the week was over,” Keefer said. “And I thought it would be cool to have something we could keep using year after year, so we got some of the guys together and put it together, and it turned out really nice.” Department members initially had used a golf cart loaned to them from the Ada Battery Center, but eventually purchased the golf cart when the decision was made to construct a more permanent little engine. With the help of other members of the AFD’s A Shift, Keefer used two-by-two wood pieces and plywood to construct the sides of the engine in a design similar to the AFD’s largest pumping unit, Engine 10. Because of that, the new engine was dubbed “Mini 10,” and became an instant hit in school programs and parades. “The kids love it, and when you’re putting on those fire safety demonstrations, one of the most important and sometimes hardest things to do is to get their attention and keep their attention,” Keefer said. “They love the Mini 10, and it helps keep their focus on our message, which is fire safety and

fire prevention.” With the addition of LED lights that helped create a custom working light bar and a siren box rescued from the scrap heap, Mini 10 looks and sounds like a ‘real’, full-fledged pumping unit – only a LOT smaller. Its lights, sirens and its size have made the Mini 10 a big hit in parades for the past year. “I think we first used it in the Ada Christmas parade last year, and it was really popular,” Keefer said. “People really responded to it. We already knew kids loved it, because we’d used it in the school programs in October last year. But we were a little surprised at how much the adults liked it.” The Mini 10 has also appeared in the ECU Homecoming Parade and the Autumn Days parade. Keefer said the department plans to keep using the little engine as long as its lights and sirens are in working order. “It’s been really cool,” he said. “I had no idea when we started this that it would be as popular as it is. Everyone in the department likes it, the kids just love it, and it’s something that has become sort of a little tourist attraction for the department.” ■ www.adahub.com • 7

A History of Great Food Aldridge Coffee Shop

The Aldridge building is one of the city’s most noticeable landmarks. It’s hard to miss the Aldridge. Not just because of its physical size, but because of how it is so notoriously well known. Ada’s cultural history is significantly indebted to the Aldridge. Since 1996, Harral Harbin has been the owner of the Aldridge Coffee Shop. Most know him by his first name, especially the regular customers who look like they’re sitting down to breakfast at home. In fact, Harral was still getting happy birthday wishes long after the afternoon rush had passed, by both his staff and the departing lunch goers. Harral has begun quite a cozy community among his frequent visitors at the restaurant. Birthday wishes are commonplace, and many customers have been coming almost daily to the shop for years now. When you walk in, you can instantly tell it’s more than a little restaurant. If you’re someone who has never dropped by, you can expect good company and a full menu of food. You can eat breakfast for as long as they’re opened, but there is plenty to choose from aside from breakfast. The shop opens before the sun rises and you can expect to be eating long before then too. Lunch specials are served every day aside from Saturday. Ada’s Aldridge was one of five original

by: Brock Parsons

hotels all with the Aldridge name. Ours has been here since 1928. At one time it contained a beauty parlor, a barber shop, a magazine shop, a liquor store, and a pharmacy all on the same floor. As well as the widely known restaurant that has existed in the same spot since the old hotel was built. The Aldridge was the spot to be during its heyday in the oil boom. The Aldridge has seen a slew of history in downtown Ada. Of course, Mr. Aldridge originally opened the building as a hotel, and it has undergone plenty of changes. In the 1960’s the hotel closed and C.B. Howard stepped in to take over ownership. Howard envisioned a grand apartment building, aimed at housing the elderly with low incomes. He contacted Housing & Urban Development, obtained federal grants, and with the help of the Ada community, allowed the grand apartment to come into being. The building has assumed the role of an apartment for low income ever since, but more than just the elderly can get in. The restaurant alone has seen a lot of history. Multi-million dollar oil deals have occurred numerously right inside. It’s even been visited by celebrities during its days as the hotel restaurant, such as Roy Rodgers, Dale Evans, and even Elvis’ band stayed a night. Interestingly, it still has the original

terrazzo flooring from when the building first went up. Harral is proud of the community that distinguishes the Aldridge Coffee Shop. He has come a long way, growing up in Ada all his life, but claims that he couldn’t have done it without his wife who followed him all the way, and his son. He’s even more grateful of his employees and the customers who have both become a family. “None of this would be possible without God, my wife, and my customers.” His relationship with customers is something you don’t ordinarily see at a restaurant. Often, the customers will chip in and help out with tips when one of the employees is facing a rough patch. During Christmas the customers help the most. It’s not one-way though, everyone on the staff is very friendly to new customers and old regulars alike. He claims that one of his all time most memorable compliments is from a man who told him that “This is no longer a restaurant. This is the gathering place because everyone here is family.” Harral believes that fits it very well. You should stop by for a visit if you’ve never been. You’ll be seeing a huge part of Ada’s history, and eating a freshly cooked meal. Not only will you be eating, you’re going to feel like you’re right at home. ■

small

town girl

time influence by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

In today’s cynical society, when people hear about politics they automatically think about corruption. It seems as if every day breeds a new scandal and yet another generation moves closer to disillusionment. That is why the world of this Ada resident, Somerlyn Cothran, is both surprising and remarkable. She has immersed herself in the world of fundraising, both for politicians and trade associations, yet still exudes a refreshing enthusiasm for her work and the world in general. Perhaps this is because the number one priority of her company, Cothran Development, is ethics; she works only for clients that she believes in and respects. Before Cothran takes on a client, she does a two-hour interview to decide if she both can, and will, help them. She has a passion for the “underdog,” and this is expressed in her business practices. Small or suffering trade associations come under her advisement and become powerful national entities. Political candidates that might have little chance of winning, or raising the funds needed to continue a campaign, accumulate, with Cothran’s help, three times as much money as their nearest competitor. However, she does remind me that her job is, “To get the candidate funded, not to get them elected.” But money can be a definite advantage. Though she works primarily on the state and national level, she will also help those locally, giving them free advice if

they can’t afford a successful fundraising firm like hers. Cothran believes deeply in what she does and holds great respect for those who run for office and want to do good. As she says, “The political world is a demanding world. I admire anyone who runs for public office because they are instantly under a microscope.” The world of politics provides many challenges, but Cothran is the type of woman who faces them, confronting them boldly. When she graduated from college no jobs could be found—not even with a BA in Communications and an MA in Organizational Development. Those that were available all started at the bottom, and, for Cothran, this would not do. So at 21, she started her own business. She called the Oklahoma State Senate Energy Chairman to ask if she could raise money for him. He said yes, and Cothran ended up setting records while building her reputation and business. Despite having many powerful clients, Cothran was not thinking about gaining wealth and prestige. As she puts it, “I was just thinking about making my next car payment.” Now, ten years later, she has been named a “Rising Star in Politics” by Campaigns and Elections Magazine; she has been a nominee for Oklahoma’s “Woman of the Year” and was chosen to be Rudy Giuliani’s Oklahoma Finance Director—raising three times as much

money for his campaign than any other Republican running for the 2008 Presidential nomination. Her outlook is the key to success. “There is a delicate and strategic form to raising money, especially for political races.” It has not always been easy, though. Being a woman in business is difficult, but being a woman in the political world is even more so. “The glass ceiling in the political world is twice as thick,” she explains. “You can’t be passive…you must be to the point, maybe even a little harsh.” Since she knows how tough it is to be a woman in a competitive world, Cothran is a firm believer in helping other women. A glance at her website will show you that of the seven other people employed at Cothran Development, only the web designer is male. Since she was lucky enough to have a connection that could open doors for her, Cothran feels that it is her duty to do the same for others, especially women. The business of political fundraising is not easy, but it is rewarding. Cothran and her associates have the opportunity to get to know politicians, businesspeople, and donors. These relationships become very close over time, and evolve into trusting friendships. Every day presents a new challenge as she strives for creative ways to do her job, help her clients, and promote the ideas and causes for which she cares. ■

Savoring the Moments by: Roy Deering

Local soldier knows each and every holiday at home is special

Major Steven Stanford, his wife Susan, his daughter, Miranda, oldest son, Cade, and eight-month-old son, Riley

Major Steven Stanford has been around the military long enough to learn a few things. Always be aware of the solider on your left and the soldier on your right. Serve as long as they’ll let you. And, most importantly, appreciate every moment at home, because there are plenty of times home is a long way away. “You do get, I think, to a point where you really appreciate every day at home, maybe more than people with what we call normal jobs,” said Stanford, a full-time soldier with the U.S. Army National Guard unit based out of Norman. “But when you’re home for a holiday, you really try to take the time to appreciate it, because there are lots of holidays, for soldiers, where you don’t get the chance to sit down with the family, because the family is thousands of miles away.” Having served for 21 years, the 40year-old Stanford has been deployed to the Middle East on two occasions, and will head out again with his unit sometime in the spring of 2011. Because of that, Stanford said he’ll “soak up” every second of this holiday season, enjoying both Thanksgiving and Christmas at home. “That’s just part of being a soldier,” Stanford said. “First of all, we have an all volunteer military force in this 14 • www.adahub.com

country, meaning each and every soldier chooses to serve because they want to. And, with that service come sacrifices, and each soldier knows about those and they just accept it as part of a job that has to be done.” Married for what he said has been “a long, long time,” Stanford said his wife, Susan, is a very supportive Army wife. His two oldest children, Miranda ad Cade, have grown up with a military father who is away from home a lot. The family’s newest member, 8-month-old Riley, will someday be asked to make the same sacrifices. “They’re a great family,” Stanford said. “The best I could ever ask for. They support me and understand that they are as much military as I am.” Stanford’s first overseas deployment came in 2003, when he spent nine months stationed in Iraq as part of a unit that ran transportation missions into Iraq. Four years later, he was back in the Middle East, serving in Baghdad, Iraq for nine more months before returning home in October 2008. With another extended overseas stay just around the corner, Stanford said he’s focused on enjoying every moment he is at home this holiday season because he knows he’ll miss both Thanksgiving and Christmas is 2011. Stanford’s 2011 deployment will also be the first time he’s had to leave

behind a “toddler” when he ships out. “I’ve missed my share of birthdays, holidays and anniversaries,” Stanford said. “But every soldier does, and every soldier’s family also sacrifices their holidays because of his or her service. You make the best of the ones when you are home, and then try to keep yourself busy and focused on your mission when you’re away.” Even though the times away from home are difficult – especially the holidays – Stanford said the military works very hard to make holidays as comfortable as possible. “They can’t make places like Baghdad or Kuwait home,” he said. “But the Army and other armed forces do work hard to provide those traditional meals and to make the holidays a little more like home than the other days you serve in the field.” Even so, a mess hall in the Middle East still isn’t home, even when you’re sharing it with two thousand of your “closest friends.” That’s why Stanford said soldiers like him learn quickly to appreciate the holidays spent at home. “It’s a special thing to have family, and to be able to spend time with them,” he said. “But when you have the chance to be home for the holidays, like I do this year, you have to be very thankful, and I am.” ■

Honesty and Awareness the poetry of Ken Hada “What’s your favorite color?” This question usually provokes either a trite, standard response or a look that says, “Are you serious?” This is not the case with Dr. Ken Hada, a member of ECU’s English Department for the past eleven years. Instead, he leans back in his chair, hands folded in front of him, and stares at the ceiling, answering that blue is his favorite color, though he is also fond of olive green, crimson red, an assortment of browns and tans, but, yes, ultimately the answer would have to be blue. But then again, Ken Hada is not typical; he sees the world through all the vividness of sensory perception, experiencing it to the fullest. Thus he thinks about color, and thus he is a poet, even though he states, “I think of myself as a human being, not a poet.” He is a man concerned with experiencing the world around him and bringing humanity to poetry. Hada’s poetry consists of more than just color; it embodies the overall impression and mood of a moment or memory. It involves all of the sensory experiences. A notepad and pen keep residence within reach in his truck, just in case, because his ideas are also generated by motion. Whether he is driving down the road, canoeing down a stream, or walking through a meadow, this multi-dimensional movement through space and sense provides him with the inspiration to create. He scribbles notes as he drives down the highway, recording as much as he can in a moment. Poetry is about much more than the impressions and experiences of the world around us all. It is a very serious thing that embodies communication, connection, and, above all else, honesty. A good writer must be completely honest with both themselves and their audience. As Hada remarks, “Honesty is the bond that makes art work. A dishonest artist

is like a fisherman without a hook.” If the poet is not being true to their own feelings and perceptions, then they betray the work, audience, and themselves; they simply fool themselves into thinking they are creating art, when truly they are spouting nothing. This might sound simple, but sometimes it is most difficult to be honest with yourself. Awareness, of both the self and surroundings, is, as Hada explains, “A life long pursuit.” This honesty, however, pertains to much more than the self; it is the cement that bonds the writer to the audience, and this seems to be one of the things that Hada most enjoys. Even though he does state that he is the first audience for his poetry--anything written must first be written with him in mind--the audience does play an important role. Hada has recently read his poetry at Cameron University, the University of Oklahoma, and the Woody Guthrie Festival. His poetry was featured on Garrison Keillor’s The Writer’s Almanac broadcast on National Public Radio, October 25, 27, and 30. You can find his two books, The Way of the Wind and Spare Parts at the ECU bookstore, Amazon.com, or his own site kenhadapoetry.com. He reads in McAlister, Edmond, Arkansas, or Ada; if someone wants to hear him read, he is willing to make the trip. He might write for himself, but poetry, though a solitary profession, is also about communication, and this is something that drives him. Hada wants to move the audience; he wants them to not only feel what he is expressing, but also awaken them to their own memories and experiences. His poetry, though it might not seem so at first, is essentially political in nature, because, as he says, “There’s nothing more political than dirt, trees, and water.” These are the things that surround us and make our world whole. By reminding

Yellow Cottonwoods There’s heartache in these lines cracking through once-hard ground crumbling to course dust. Sadness drifts here beneath these yellow Cottonwoods where old men sit in a distorted circle – a parlor for the ornery and rejected – where a can of beer accompanies a well-worn story told with fading bravado swallowing fear in quick gulps. These grains of river sand dry in wind sifting through time piled around toes of shuffling boots, legs dangling off a tailgate or sitting awry in a chair whose fabric is stretched past the point of brittle. © Ken Hada, October 2010

his audience of their own connection with the natural world, he makes a larger statement about humanity as a whole. So whether you write poetry, appreciate poetry, or don’t care for it at all, try to look at the world through Hada’s eyes; try to experience all the world has to offer—all the different shades of green— because, as Hada muses, “The older you get, the less lime green there is.” ■ Continued on page 21

The Fall Film Crew, from Ada Oklahoma is a group of film enthusiasts that has transformed passion into talent and pursued the admirable task of producing their first short film for a national film festival adjudication. Luke Cypert of Ada is the director and producer extraordinaire for the project. He and several of his friends, interested in the business, decided earlier this year to get the cameras rolling. According to Cypert, the aim is to develop his talents and that of his friends while gaining exposure to the film industry. “I know that getting just a Mass Communication degree means nothing to a movie producer. You have to have contacts and a reel,” Cypert said. “We don’t have contacts right now, so we need to work on our reels and take our films to festivals.” The catalyst for this project was due in part to Bill Thrash, station manager and program director of OETA and an

encounter Cypert had with him. “Bill Thrash was on campus to open the studio this fall, he told Linda Schaefer [Instructor of Mass Communications] that he hoped that, soon, ‘Something would come from East Central University that he could broadcast on OETA.’” Cypert said. “Then I told him that I was putting together a team to produce very high quality short films and that the first one would be shot in the Bill Thrash studio. We got to work, right away.” The pre-production work began with Cypert’s conceptual photographs, which showed the team the style and look he wanted to capture. Cypert and Kim Wren, Ada senior at ECU, began writing the script and casting actors. “After getting the basic plot via the storyboard that Luke had, I wrote a rough draft in about 10 minutes while hanging out with Luke one afternoon at the Daily Shake,” Wren said. “That rough draft ended up accounting for about 90 percent of the final script!” She said with a chuckle. Jacob Sircy, ECU Ada senior, is the >

chief video editor on the project. He has an integral role in what the finished product will look like. “We had several discussions about the style and genre. I looked at the storyboard Luke made, looked at the script, and applied a little of my own touches that worked best with the footage, Sircy said. While they hope to enhance their resumes and make connections, the unifying element among the group is their respect for the art. “I like short films and enjoy making them. It’s fun to me. Sircy said. One challenge the group has is its little experience in working with green and computer generated sets and props. However, it’s a challenge that they are excited about overcoming. “What a green screen can allow us to do is incredible. It’s very difficult to shoot something in or around Ada without it looking like a small town or a forest, Cypert said. “When we shoot on green screen, we can put the actors anywhere in the world. For this project, the film makers developed a short scene showing a simple rooftop encounter between a man and a woman. It is set in the 40s. “It’s similar in style to something like Casablanca, but we’ve made it uniquely ours, Cypert said. “This project is intended to be a stepping stone to bigger and greater projects, but I do hope that people enjoy it, because it was a lot of fun to be a part of, Wren added. “The moment the rough edit was up on YouTube, I was showing everyone I know. I’m incredibly proud of what we managed to accomplish in such a

They hope to have the work completed and professionally reviewed by the end of the year. The group’s work can be seen on Vimeo at www.vimeo.com/lukecypert. “I have a passion for film. It’s a lot of what I think about and what I really want to do. This fall was just the right time to start,â€? Cypert said. â–

short time. Other members of the production team include: Wyatt Fisher, sound director, Cynthia Mellon, assistant to the director, Kyle Dickenson, set photographer and Jomain McKenzie, communications specialist with ECU students Natalie May, and Derek Reed as principal actors.
