So I have to admit, after reading the interview with Sarah Maloy this month, I feel a little safer officing next to her but a little concerned about my personal workout routine...or the lack thereof! Maybe my workout of daily typing exercises doesn’t have a great impact on my physique, but my finger muscles are a force to be reckoned with! With exercise on the brain, I decided to ask the rest of the office their thoughts on working out. Guillermo, or “G” as we like to call him, has a lot of wisdom to share on the subject, “Not for me”, he said. That’s a pretty typical laid back response from “G”. “If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” This was the basis of a sermon preached a few Sundays ago in a local church in Ada, Oklahoma—a sermon which then became the basis of a doctrine, and a doctrine which then became the basis of a movement. The staff and a few members of the congregation at Legacy Church have decided to “spend [themselves]” by going barefoot until they receive a donation of 200 shoes, which will then be given to anyone in the community with the need for new shoes. “We plan to start with our own community and then branch out to other places around the world,” said Scott Miller, the pastor at Legacy Church. “We want to start with our own community because there is a need here. Many times we don’t realize that.” They call their initiative Barefoot for the Broken and they see this as only the beginning of a new lifestyle and culture within their church. “Talk without action is nonsense,” paraphrased Miller. “We are called to be the hands and feet of Christ and if we do anything short of that, it’s nonsense. We cannot address the spiritual need of people, yet overlook the physical need;” therefore, this initiative is “just a jumping-off point.” The inspiration for this initiative simply

came from looking for a need. “There are over 300 million people in the world who don’t even own a pair of shoes,” said Miller, “and I wear shoes as a fashion statement. I have a closet full of shoes, while there are people around the world who wake up and go to work barefoot.” Miller claims that when things are put into perspective, you are truly able to realize the need that is out there. “If you have a yearly income of only $35,000, you are more wealthy that 96% of the world’s population. That really puts things in perspective.” With this awareness and motivation, Legacy has already done rather well in their fundraising efforts. They have been fortunate in that they have already received some substantial publicity. Miller had the privilege of sharing the vision and goal of Barefoot for the Broken on the nationally broadcasted radio station KLOV. Since then, Barefoot for the Broken has received donations from people and churches in 7 different states, including places as far away as Virginia and Pennsylvania. Some churches have even called Miller to tell him that they will start this initiative in their own cities and states. Just as this vision is spreading across the US, Miller hopes that the vision will spread across Ada and the surrounding community. To attempt to reach this goal, Legacy Church would like to invite and challenge everyone in the community

to go barefoot on October 2nd. By going barefoot on this day you will be able to share with others the need within our community and abroad in a very simple way. Then on October 9th, Legacy will be holding a shoe-drive from 6 to 9 pm at their church. You can bring a pair of shoes or a monetary donation which will then be used to purchase shoes. Though he hopes there will be a great turnout for this initiative Miller wants to stress the fact that this is not for publicity or to look good, this is simply to help those who are in need—to put actions to words. Just as this is simply a “jumping-off point” for Legacy Church, perhaps their actions will inspire more actions in other people. No matter what race, background or religion that we come from, people like Miller show us that simple actions can accomplish great things—we just have to step out and go do something. In the era of touch screens, portable devices, and unwavering wireless connectivity to friends and families on just about everything, it’s common to be faced with technological blunders. W

hen I sat down to interview Sarah Maloy, I did not expect to find myself pinned to the floor or swinging sledgehammers at tractor tires. But then again, most everything about this young woman is unexpected. Photos of grappling young boys and girls adorn the walls. The tissue of her first bloody nose hangs like a holy relic on the front room bulletin board. Sarah approaches the mixed martial arts with something akin to religious zeal. This is a woman on a mission. Though she didn’t have her first fight until September of last year, Sarah has always been both athletic and competitive and on October 2nd will compete for the “Throwdown Showdown Female 125 Title.” She lets nothing slow her down,

“Check your pride at the door because you’re probably going to get beat by a girl.” not even pregnancy. When carrying her second child, she still competed on a basketball team. While pregnant with her third, she was training in the mixed martial arts (under a doctor’s supervision, of course). And her training is anything but easy. The mixed martial arts, as the name suggests, combine all other forms of fighting—wrestling, boxing, and jujitsu, among many others. The body must stay in peak physical condition in order to surmount the many challenges presented in a fight. Because of the varied disciplines, you must be prepared for any offensive and be both physically and mentally ready to counter it with an effective defense, all the while deciding how to best your opponent. In many ways, it is similar to chess; you must think several steps ahead. Of course, in most chess matches, neither party winds up with bloody noses, blackened eyes, or passed out on a mat—three things that Sarah recounts with pride. In addition to proudly displaying evidence of her first bloody nose, Sarah giggles while telling about her first professional fight in Aruba and her first black eye. Blake, her fiancee, trainer, and partner, grimaces with discomfort and chagrin while remembering the many nasty looks he received walking with her through the airport. And she tells me that it isn’t unpleasant at all to pass out, “You don’t tap out unless something’s going to break…when I stepped into the cage to fight I had won.” It had been a battle just for her to compete in New Orleans. A month and a half after the birth of her son, she was given the opportunity to do battle in the Superdome. If she agreed, she would have to lose 35 pounds in 45 days—in addition to training and recovering from childbirth. Of course,

for Sarah, there was no question. She finally had her first fight. In addition to working toward her own self-fulfillment, Sarah strives to help others, particularly women; the thread of female strength and empowerment weaves through all parts of the conversation. Again and again there are variations on one theme: women are so much stronger than they think they are. “Women are capable of a lot more than [they] give themselves credit for,” Sarah tells me. And she should know. In addition to owning Body Tech MMA and competing professionally, she is also raising three children—two girls ages seven and three and a twenty-two month old boy. When I ask her how she manages all her responsibilities, she responds, “I can do this because I have children…your family is your driving force.” Her view is that women not only do what they want to do, but must do everything else as well. If women can juggle jobs, classes, housework, and families, they why can’t they also take a bloody nose or a blackened eye in stride? Training in MMA is about more than practical things like self-defense. After her students have trained with her for a few months, she notices they are happier and walk prouder. Their confidence level skyrockets as they discover something about themselves and find something to drive toward that is uniquely their own. Sarah Maloy is not just training for her own matches—she is actively creating an army of strong empowered women to take on the world. As she states in one of her unofficial mottoes, “Check your pride at the door because you’re probably going to get beat by a girl.” ■ www.adahub.com • 13

Why Oklahoma? Why East Central University? Why would an international student travel across the world to land in Will Rogers International Airport? That is only the beginning of the journey. Next is the long drive through barren dusty rural towns to find a transient home in Ada, Oklahoma while attending a regional university far from contemporary American amenities and culture. According to first year social work student Adisha Waghmarae who came to Ada from South Africa, she picked ECU over offers from Princeton and Cornell University. “I chose ECU because of the tennis team and the great hospitality.” Waghmarae said conversations with personnel from Princeton were cold compared to the inviting and warm Oklahoma voices she heard over the phone with the international office at ECU. The life-long decision was made, and she hasn’t regretted her choice. Rupesh Bajngain is from Nepal, following a steady flow of students that have stepped onto Oklahoma soil from that mystical land. According to accounting major Bajnagain, he chose ECU because of the small town atmosphere that was similar to his community in Nepal. He had no desire to confront one of our larger cities. He was not interested in facing the challenge of adapting to the American culture from the fast paced life of college towns in betterknown parts of the country. John Hargrave, newly appointed director Dr. Mara Sukholutskaya, Vice President of Student Development Bronson Warren, and finally International Students Connections Club sponsor Dr. Stan Nnochirionye. I [Linda Schaefer] recalled my own trepidation at 11-years-old when I walked down the marble hallways of St. George’s British School in Rome, Italy and faced a classroom filled with other international students. My classmates personally embraced me because we were all in the same position as “foreigners in a strange land”. However, the students gathered that afternoon in the ESTEP Center, would become the minority in a school comprised primarily of students born and raised in Oklahoma. “From the first day you stepped onto Oklahoma soil, you gained a new perspective of the world, “ said Hargrave as he smiled graciously at the group of students who among them were students from Asia, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and the Caribbean Islands. He suggested that the growth that would naturally come from the experience would make them better people. “You are living a dream.” Hargrave said it was an opportunity he never had in college, but as president he has already traveled to several countries as ECU reaches out to develop programs to further the exchanges between international schools and the new Global Education Department at ECU. “We are all so much alike and also very different,” he said. Dr. Sukholutskaya presented a slide presentation with detailed information

for the students that included on campus work opportunities. Most important, the new director attempted to share her own experience as a foreigner from Ukraine, “I know what new students are facing, “ she affirmed. “From personal experience, I know that you can also make it here.” ECU has created numerous opportunities for the international students to share their personal cultures with their fellow Oklahoma students. Throughout the year, there are scheduled events such as international food fairs to raise money for scholarship funds and to introduce the community to exotic cuisines through food tastings and other events. Perhaps those who could explain the journey best are Dr. Stan Nnochirionye and student leader and senior Jomaine McKenzie. Dr. Stan as he is known gave some personal advice, “I came her 28 years ago and I was just like you,” he began. “You are the ambassadors of your country. Take it with pride. Don’t be shy and reach out to the American students. They want to know you too.” Jomain is a very familiar presence on campus. He is perhaps best known for his singing voice. Over the past three years, he has not only entertained audiences at ECU with his uniquely Jamaican voice, but has been the quiet and elegant ambassador for his own country as well as for ECU. “This place is mysterious and it has a spiritual energy that is healing if you don’t allow yourself to be crushed, “ he said. “If you can make it in Ada, you can make anywhere else in the world.” ■

Untapped creativity cheats the world of beauty. Lindsey Erickson, jewelry designer extraordinaire, unleashes her creativity into an urban vintage design that’s become her signature. The Lindsey Erickson Jewelry Collection holds true to ‘the design of the creator is often a reflection of themselves’. This has made her collection one of the most sought after in Ada, Oklahoma. Lindsey’s down-to-earth style can be traced to her Texas upbringing. Yet a family tradition gets credit for her fashion sense. “I came from a long line of shoppers. I remember weekends in Lubbock shopping with my aunts, cousins, sisters, mom and grandma. Once mom and I were locked in a mall, the janitor let us out.” Lindsey laughed. Often legacies reveal an answer to a need. This was true for Lindsey. As manager of two fitness centers, Lindsey was homesick to be with her daughter, Brightyn. “I left work one day crying. Within two months, I was a stayat-home mom. Two weeks after that, with time on my hands and my cell phone cutoff, I looked for a solution.” Lindsey saw an avenue to create jewelry to match the children’s clothing her mother designed. Lindsey’s first creation was a bracelet of handmade beads that took approximately 15 hours to make and sold for $4.99. Now, this self-taught designer and visionary creates original pieces in as little as 5 hours. Until recently, average sale was $45. “We’ve tailored a line of jewelry with earrings, bracelets and rings starting as low as $5.” These prices are not an indication of a low-end jewelry business. Simply that “we gear our pieces toward what people like and will buy. The Lindsey Erickson Jewelry Collection still boasts signature pieces

valuing up to $185. Everything from “edgy man watches to cutesy children’s jewelry to urban charm” reveal her trademark for individuality. “I don’t want anything to look like it came from a factory, as if it were mass produced.” While each Lindsey Erickson Collection contains up to 400 pieces, remakes are limited to 10 per design. The requests for one-of-a-kind originals keeps Lindsey’s artistic style in high demand. Exceptional quality and design is in every piece of jewelry and upheld by their lifetime guarantee. “If something breaks, we want to fix it. We look for ways to improve. If it breaks, it’s usually the clasp. We won’t buy them again or we’ll change our technique.” explained Lindsey. Each design is tested and must meet her standard of excellence. “Everyone wants to be a quality tester, even my 2 year old son Teagan. If a piece can survive him, it can survive anyone, laughed Lindsey. The tester wears them daily while sleeping, showering and swimming. It’s an important job, they don’t take lightly.” Jewelry is “to be worn forever, passed down through generations.” A newly renovated studio in her home is a buzz of excitement. Friends stop by to “hang out, listen to music and check out the latest design.” Along with the renovation, Lindsey revamped her business in 2009. A “short maternity leave turned into 2 years”, so Lindsey looked to what she really loves. “I mainly sold on eBay, but as a people person, I wanted face to face interaction.” Within 30 days ‘The Lindsey Erickson Collection’ became available at two stores in Ada. Lindsey shared about expanding her business. “I have to jump in and do it,

everything’s growing so quickly.” She believes she’s been in the ‘right place at the right time.’ One of Lindsey’s new locations came while delivering her newest collection to another venue. An encounter at Target where “her sister was wearing one of her designs” begat a new customer. Although this type of ‘advertisement’ may seem unconventional, it’s the excitement that makes it all worthwhile. “I feel blessed. It’s so much fun to do what you love. It’s a passion, I could never give up.” Lindsey expressed. Lindsey created some techniques for making jewelry and believes that a “true designer is always one-step ahead”. She shared, “The arriving moment came when someone copied me. Not every piece of jewelry should be mine. Different interpretations of my design is the sincerest form of flattery.” With all this drive and passion, Lindsey is known to pull an “all-nighter”. Lindsey declared, “I couldn’t do this without my husband, Bill. He does a fabulous job taking care of everything when I disappear to design a collection or prepare for a trunk show. He’s so tolerant, it’s amazing.” Although trunk shows and open houses are one avenue Lindsey uses to introduce her designs, they can turn her from lively and confident to quiet and nervous. “It’s difficult to watch people look at something you’ve created. It’s a piece of you, of your heart.
