Burgers 1lb - Ground Beef 2 - Roasted green chiles chopped 1/2 lb. - shredded cheddar cheese Burger Seasoning Mix 1tsp - black pepper 1tsp - salt 1tsp - liquid smoke 1tsp - worcestershire sauce Fries 1 Bag - Favorite Frozen French Gouda Fry Sauce 1 Quart - Heavy Cream 1/2lb - Shredded Smoked Gouda Cheese Place the ground beef in a bowl and add chopped green chilies, black pepper, salt, liquid smoke, and worcestershire sauce and mix until everything is combined. Take the ground beef and section it into four equal portions. Now, with one portion in your hand, make a ball and press it in the middle to make an indent into the patty and stuff that with the cheddar cheese. Now close the hole completely with the ground beef and flatten into a nice burger patty. Repeat for all 4 patties. Now you can either cook them on the stove top, or better yet, cook them outside on the grill while watching the fireworks! Gouda Fries In a heavy sauce pan bring the quart of cream just to a boil and slowly, while whisking, add the shredded Smoked Gouda cheese. For a thin cheese sauce, add less cheese; for a thicker sauce, add more cheese. Once the sauce is ready, set it aside on low heat to just stay hot while you prepare the fries. Prepare your favorite bagged fries as directed or for that at-home chef, you can make your own. Simply take a russet potato and slice it (making sure to be consistent so everything cooks at the same speed) and drop them in 300 degree oil for about 5-7 minutes, just until they start to turn brown. Then pull them out of the oil, drain, and freeze. When they are completely cool, heat the oil up to 375 degrees and cook until golden brown and delicious. Dust them with seasoned salt and then top them with the wonderful smoked gouda cheese sauce. Serve with your Chile Cheese Stuffed Burger and you are sure to please all your family & friends.

Windows 8 is here! Windows 8 is the newest version of Microsoft Windows operating system. Windows 8 introduces significant changes to the operating system’s platform and features a new touch screen interface and a start screen with “tiles” that represent applications. In addition, Windows 8 has performance improvements, security enhancements, and improved support for touchscreen devices. However, the new user interface of the operating system can be confusing and difficult to learn, especially when used with a keyboard and mouse instead of a touchscreen. If you have purchased or are considering purchasing a new Windows 8 computer, come to PTC and learn how to navigate this new operating system. Classes begin in August! Local Ladies team up by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

People often speak about strength in numbers—combining forces to achieve something better than they can achieve on their own. This was the thinking of five local runners who wanted to place in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon; they knew that separately they could do well, but that they could do even better once they joined forces as a team. This is how the team Run 210, made up of Karry Baker, Savanna Sutton, Tara Priest, Jill Taylor, and Jennifer Ramsey, came in third out of 121 teams; they understood the importance of hard work, but also teamwork. Even though this was their first relay together, none of them are new to running; however, they did all start running in the last five years. In the past five years, though, they had all participated in relays, halfmarathons, and two of the runners, Karry and Savanna, had even done a full marathon. Even though just participating and trying your best is an excellent experience, they wanted to place. The decided that that if they put together the right team and trained with a medal in mind they just might achieve their goals. So that is what they did. The five women started training together in November. Five days a week they would gather at Gym 210 and work toward their goal with the help of their trainer, Shane Cristelli. They had, of course, known each

other before this training began, though. Several of them had gone to school together, worked together, been in book clubs, done boot camps—there were many connections between the five runners. They were chosen for this team, though, because they were good, fast, but, most importantly, competitive. One of the reasons why they thought they might perform better as a team than as individuals was because of this fact. None of them wanted to be the weak link or the reason why they failed in their goal. This gave them further motivation to not just push each other, but to push themselves. They day of the race they were racing to the starting line, running a little bit late. They made it in time, though, and Tara started them off with the 10K (6.2 miles). After her came Jennifer with the 5K (3.1 miles) and Savanna with the longest leg of 12K (7.6 miles). Karry followed her with the last 5K and Jill finished off the race with the final 10K. The last block of the race, Tara, Jennifer, Savanna, and Karry joined with Jill to finish the race together as a team. Altogether it took them 3 hours, 37 minutes, and 48 seconds. Their average pace was 8 minutes and 19 seconds per mile. Running that much is a hard and grueling experience, but they do it because they love it. This race, though, was about more than just the exhilaration of finishing

a race; it was about remembering those who are no longer with us. Even though there are many competitors who are in it to win, there are also people running for remembrance. They saw a blind man feeling along a rope, people pushing children, firefighters walking in full gear. Along the route there were banners that listed the names of the dead. This atmosphere gave the runners even more strength, giving them the will to push on when their muscles might have faltered. Though they did very well in this race as a relay team, they are all ready to return to half-marathons. That is their preference. They joined together as a team and proved that they could realize their goals. Though they are planning on returning to individual races, they will still train together. It helps make them better when they have a friend who is going through the same thing but can also push them when they need it. They are all ready to do more running, though. Running is more about beating your own time than beating someone else. But, it is very motivational to be around other runners who are doing the same thing. In the end there’s the runner’s high, the rush of endorphins, and, if you’re lucky, you have beaten your own time. And perhaps, if you’re even luckier, you’ve beaten everyone else’s as well. ■ www.adahub.com • 7

Common Sense Investing

Soldier to Soldier Bracelets $95.00-$145.00

Founded on Academic Research Have you ever had a friend, neighbor, or financial advisor recommend an investment that will “considerably increase your return/interest with seemingly no additional risk”? If so, I would like to remind you of a simple investment truth: “Risk and Return Are Related”. If Investment “A” is expected to earn 2% and Investment “B” is expected to earn 6%, then “B” is exposing you to higher potential risk(s) than “A”. Does this mean one is better than the other? Absolutely not, however, it does mean Investment “B” must reward investors with a higher expected return in order to compensate them for taking the additional risk(s). Be aware that there is a Risk/Return tradeoff for any investment you make. If you hang on to this simple truth, you will be more likely to pursue your long term financial goals with greater success.

It runs like a deere GRISSOMS by: Sunnie Dawn Smith

What makes a business special? Is it a superior product and service? Or perhaps a sense of community involvement? Is it the way the company treats its customers? Or the way it treats its workers? No matter which of these criteria you use, GRISSOMS, LLC is definitely special; it meets them all. Family owned and operated, GRISSOMS strives to be the best that it can for the individual customer as well as the community. In 1965, Sam and Joi Grissom opened their first location in Prague. Sam had taught Vo-Ag in Earlsboro for six years and wanted to try something new. They purchased the John Deere dealership from J. B. Hargrove and ran it with a skeleton crew. In addition to Sam and Joi, they had three employees: a parts salesperson, a full-time mechanic, and a part-time mechanic/set-up person. Since then, they have grown to six locations: Prague, Checotah, Shawnee, McAlester, Muskogee, as well as one right here in Ada. It is not only owned and operated by the same family that started it; subsequent generations have become involved as well. Sons Vic and Keith have joined the business, as have their wives, Jayne and Janet. Several of Sam’s and Joi’s grandchildren are also now working in the business, making three generations of GRISSOMS working for the same company. Sam still comes to

work every day, even though he’ll be 79 next month. He loves his work and his customers. The people at GRISSOMS value their relationship with the customers very much and, in fact, have several that have been with them since their humble beginnings in 1965. Though their values and commitment have remained the same since 1965, technology used to run businesses has not. GRISSOMS has strived to stay abreast of technological changes and, in addition to the technological tools used to run the business, the company has created an easy-to-navigate website which can be found at www.grissomonline.com. On their website you can request service, look up parts, view equipment, and contact them about these things via the website. As their website says, “Growing Towards the Future, Rooted in Heritage.” This perfectly describes GRISSOMS approach to business. If you’re looking for John Deere merchandise, parts, equipment, or need to schedule service, check out GRISSOMS, LLC at 13920 CR 3530. John Deere began his company in 1837 and it remains John Deere Company today. Its product quality is world-renowned and its dealer network, of which GRISSOMS is a part, is the strongest among equipment manufacturers, which has made the

company what it is today. If you do buy something at GRISSOMS, you can also count on impeccable service; they service everything they sell. In addition to John Deere equipment, you can also find Kawasaki fourwheelers and Kawasaki Mules for your off-roading needs and they are also an all around supplier of farming and ranching equipment. Since they have six stores, they are bound to have what you need, if not at the Ada store, then at one of the others, and they are happy to ship between stores for your convenience. Not only are they committed to serving their customers; they also dedicate themselves to serving the community, especially in times of need. For instance, during the recent tornado relief efforts they donated chainsaws and other equipment and made sure that it got where it needed to be within 24 hours of the destruction. They wish to help their community as much as they can, since community and family are both important to this business. So, if you are in the market for any farming or ranching equipment, check out the website or visit your local GRISSOMS, LLC. They can also be reached by phone at (580) 332-2422. Their website says, “We work hard for the people we serve,” so let them work hard for you. ■ www.adahub.com • 11

riends are a very important part of our lives; they can help make the darkest days special and the brightest even brighter. What makes friendship even better, though, is when you can share a common love like music. This is the fortunate case for Mitchell Trimmer and Justin Swallow. They went to school together at Roff and have known each other for over ten years. In 2006, though, they discovered that they could play music together as well, opening yet another avenue for their friendship to grow. As Justin says, “It’s fun to get together with your friends, play and instrument, and somehow it sounds good.” Both Mitchell and Justin had played the guitar. Self taught, they learned a lot from playing at their churches, where they were happy to have music and didn’t judge too harshly if you messed up. Mitchell, however, had also been doing a fair amount of karaoke, and he was good. He and Justin talked about it, brought a friend in who bought some drums, and their first band was born, with Mitchell on vocals and Justin on lead guitar. They played together for about a year, while Justin was still in high school and Mitchell was at Murray State Junior College, going by many different names like Death by Sexy and Remo. After a year though, Mitchell moved off to Weatherford to play college baseball for Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Justin continued to play music, starting a new band,

44 East, with Mitchell’s brother. Mitchell still played as well, starting a band in Weatherford called Sons of Jesse. In 2008, though, Mitchell returned and resumed playing with his friend again in a band called Rough Cut. For about a year, however, Mitchell has been solo until he decided to start playing with Justin once again. One of the reasons why there have been so many bands, and such an onagain off-again musical relationship, is because life happened. Not only did they need to take a break when Mitchell went off to Weatherford, but they have also needed to break for other things— like marriage and children. They love music deeply, but, as Mitchell says, “It’s tough to follow your dreams when life is happening.” However, all of this newfound responsibility that comes with settling down has only made the music better. Mitchell, who does a lot of the songwriting, feels that it is better now that he has a child. This has opened up a new way of looking at the world beyond the wildness and craziness of youth.

Though Mitchell writes a lot of the songs, Justin helps him as well, as does their newest returning member, Travis Romines. Travis has played with them off and on since 2008 and was recently coaxed into joining up again. He was reluctant because of the demands of fatherhood, but his friends convinced him to play once again. The combination of the three of them only makes their work better and stronger. Not only do they help with the songwriting, but their different musical tastes add something to the music, coming together in their own unique sound. Though they are considered to be a “Red Dirt” band, this term is very broad. Essentially, if you are a band from Oklahoma, and you accept any influence from this culture, you can be called “Red Dirt”. Though some of their influences are universal, it is their individual influences that truly make their sound. Mitchell, for instance, loves old country like Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Justin is into Led Zeppelin, though his love for music all stems from Metallica.

Travis prefers southern rock and blues, but is a huge punk rock fan. All of these differences come together, blending into one style that is uniquely theirs. Right now they are playing acoustic, but they would like to do a full band and get loud. So they are currently looking for the right drummer and bass player. They are, however, working on an acoustic album right now that should be released within the month. The main reason why they are doing the album is so their friends can get a good recording of them playing. One of the interesting things about this band is that they don’t really have fans; people might start out as fans but just end up becoming friends instead. That’s what they would like people to do: come out to the shows, say hi, stick around and hang out. That’s one of the reasons they do what they do. You can friend either Mitchell or Justin on Facebook to follow the progress of their band or call Mitchell at (580) 399-4804 if you would like to book them for a private party. Most importantly, though, is to go out and support your local music scene. ■ www.adahub.com • 13

celebrating six decades of color

by: George Snyder photos from AAA Facebook page

The Ada Artists Association (AAA) is a 64 year old organization that was founded as the Roloc Art Club (color spelled backwards). It was the “creative brain child” of Ida Hoover, an influential artist and teacher at East Central Normal College, which is now East Central University (ECU). Ms. Hoover, a Columbia University graduate, created the Roloc Art Club in 1949 to encourage community involvement in the visual arts. During those early years, the members would meet at the college on Wednesdays and there would be a 15-minute gallery talk followed by a painting session among group members. The club was a welcomed addition to Ada’s emerging arts and cultural community, according to Loretta Yin, an Ada artist, entrepreneur, current president of the AAA and an informal historian for the group. “From 1951 through 1958 there was great energy in the club, especially from East Central Art teachers, Kenneth and Jane Campbell,” Yin said. “During this period, the group organized an annual exhibit at the Pontotoc County Fair, indoor and outdoor exhibits in several locations in the city and a members’ studio was leased in downtown Ada.” In 1963 the club was renamed the Ada Artists Association and it became an incorporated, non-profit organization and studio space was purchased just off Kerr Lab Road. Based on its strong alliance with

14 • www.adahub.com

the Ada Chamber of Commerce, the AAA mounted an annual membership show at the old depot, then headquarters for the chamber. During this period, D.J. “Pete” Lafon, who was head of the ECU Art Department (19641984), provided strong support to the AAA. From the late 70s to until the mid 80s, there was a dip in membership and program involvement, but from the mid 80s into the 90s -- under the leadership and continuing support of both Ruby Zamudio and Mildred West -- the AAA held weekly art “paint-ins” and members participated in a variety of local and regional art exhibits, including the city’s “Festival of Lights,” a state legislative Art exhibition at the Capitol and exhibits in the offices of elected state representatives. Yin, who came to Ada in 1966, was a member of the organization for a few years during the early 70s (one year as president), and then she left the group to pursue a successful career in real estate. She rejoined the AAA in the mid 90s and since that time has been a tireless advocate for the association and visual arts in the city. “We had a reorganization of the AAA in 2001 and we began to grow both programs and membership,” Yin said. “By 2008 we had an active membership of more than 70 professional and amateur artists and we were involved in wide variety of activities.” From the beginning of the decade, the AAA has held two annual shows at the Ada Public Library, organized workshops

for artists, provided in-kind support for Ada High School art classes and held networking and social events for members and guests. Then, in 2010, the group established the AAA Art Scholarship for students at ECU. Last year, the group created a new program, the AAA “Artist of the Month” exhibition at Karen’s Art & Framing, LLC on East Main Street in Ada.” Recently, this program featured the work of Brad Jessop, a professor of Art at ECU and Director of University’s School of Fine Arts. “The purpose and mission of the AAA is to provide opportunities for artists, art students and art enthusiasts in Ada and surrounding communities to come together to celebrate the visual arts,” Yin said. The AAA continues to host workshops, exhibits and networking events for artists and those interested in the arts. In July, the association will host a new workshop for novice painters and those interested in learning more about the visual arts. “We believe the Ada Artists Association is an important cultural institution and we welcome all those who are interested in the visual arts -- whether in practice or in support -- to join us in our colorful adventure,” Yin said. Those interested in more information about the Ada Artists Association may contact Loretta Yin at 580-332-3830. ■
