Luke Kerr How did you get started in graphic design and photography? Actually, it was an odd start. I have a background in engineering related work, and with that comes design. It didn’t take long to realize that you have to present your ideas to sell the product, design, idea, etc. Developing a thought using CAD is an awesome tool, but the beginning of my ‘graphic design’ path really started when I began mixing those results with traditional graphics software. From there the ideas could not only work well, but could sell themselves too. As far as photography is concerned, it honestly snuck up on me. I started using a camera for random work related photos: mechanical parts, issues, etc. I found that the more that I used my new found tool, the more I enjoyed it. It’s interesting how people can all look at the same thing, but with a camera you can portray the way that your eye sees it. I’m still just a hobbyist, but have been fortunate enough to land some paying gigs with it as well. I mainly stick to photographing random things for myself, but due to numerous requests I’ve recently decided to branch out a little.

Ada’s Cycling Club What’s your favorite part of what you do? Making people happy. That, and every once in awhile, I come up with something that I’m proud of.

How did you get involved in the Air Expo and what keeps you by Roy Deering coming back? Back when the very first Air Expo, better known then as the ‘Ray Stout Memorial Warbird Fly-in’, a friend of mine was on the committee. They asked if I could create a poster for the event. After that I was inducted into the group, and the rest? History. What keeps me coming back? Well, there’s a standing rule with these guys; you can’t leave unless you can find a replacement for yourself. Applications welcome. Do you have another projects coming up? My skills of procrastination always seem to keep something on the back burner. With these things, you never know.

How long have you had your own company, Kerr Dogg Concepts?

Company? That’s a big word for a one-man band working out of a home office, moonlighting no less. My business has evolved over the past 10 years. It started with simple side jobs for friends, and in the last half, has grown to provide me with more work that I can keep up with. Finding time to stay on top of things is a challenge. It’s a delicate, often chaotic, balance between family, work, leisure, and everything else that life has to offer.

What roars, smokes, kicks out over 1,700 horsepower and is the recipient of countless “ooohs” and “aaahs?” The Lima Lima Flight Team is the world’s original six-aircraft civilian formation aerobatic team. That’s a mouthful that means six T-34 Mentor aircraft doing incredible air maneuvers. For Ada-area air show lovers, Lima Lima will be performing June 20 during the annual Ada Air Show at the Ada Municipal Airport. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy this amazing display of aircraft formation flying. Original Lima Lima team member Bill Cherwin, a Chicago-area retired United 747 pilot, said the T-34 was an excellent aircraft, and the Lima Lima pilots were ready to put on a great show in Ada. “Lima Lima was the first team to do the six-ship loop,” Mr. Cherwin said, referring to the spectacular upward looping formation by the six planes. “We do a lot of precision maneuvers I think the people of Ada will really enjoy.” Lima Lima, based in Naiperville, Illinois, travels the country presenting its unique and highly-regarded air show. This year alone, Lima

Lima will perform in 14 states, from New York to Nevada, Wisconsin to Florida. And, of course, Ada, Oklahoma. The “ship,” as Mr. Cherwin refers to the T-34, was originally designed in 1948 by famed aircraft pioneer Walter Beech. It was designed as a “spec” plane Mr. Beech wanted to try and sell to the U.S. military. And he succeeded. “The Air Force was using the old AT-6 Texan as its trainer,” Mr. Cherwin said. “They tried out the T-34 and decided to buy them.” The T-34 has several unique features. First, it was lighter and quieter than the AT-6, and it took about half the fuel to operate. Second, it had a cockpit and stick oriented much like a jet, which the Air Force was shifting to at the time. After its success in the Air Force, the Navy picked up the T-34 for its pilot training. “It’s not as loud as heavy or as glamorous as a P-51 Mustang, but it’s a legitimate warbird and a great formation aircraft,” Mr. Cherwin said. The T-34 will travel at 165 knots and all of the aircraft are instrument qualified. Each of the Lima Lima pilots is instrument rated, so weather never holds up the unit’s travel. >

The Lima Lima T-34 Mentors are painted in original Navy training colors. The “Lima Lima name was taken from the unit’s home field designation – LL10 – thus the LL on the tails of all the Mentor aircraft.

The six-ship unit flies in several formations, including the six-ship wedge and double arrowhead, and the basic finger four and diamond formations. The team has developed a series of formation aerobatics maneuvers that demonstrate the full range of the T-34s’ performance package.

Captain Bill Cherwin piloted the Boeing 747 for United Airlines. He flew the big birds from 1961 until his retirement in 1999. But he had a real love for aerobatics. “A 747 is not what you would call an aerobatic ship, he said. One day in the pilots’ lounge at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, Mr. Cherwin spotted a little notice tacked to the bulletin board. For $2,000 you could buy a membership in a sweet little T-34 Mentor training plane. “That was just too cheap to pass up, Mr. Cherwin said. So he plunked down his $2,000 and joined with several other pilots who shared the joy of flying the T-34. Soon, other area pilots began to discover the dexterity, power and fun of the T-34 and soon a flying club was born. The men could fly their planes a lot because the T-34 was inexpensive to operate and didn’t have a lot of mechanical problems. “Things evolved and we got better and better at formations and maneuvers, Mr. Cherwin said. Lima Lima began performing at air shows in 1989 and never looked back. Come out and enjoy the Lima Lima performance, and the entirety of the annual Ada Air Show, Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20 at the Ada Municipal Airport.

overwhelming.” The soldiers, “in typical Army fashion” were sworn to secrecy as they were issued a French phrase book and some French francs.

“Some of the brighter ones of us figured out we must be going to France,” Dr. Parsons said. Dr. Parsons’ unit shipped out across the English Channel the day following D-Day and landed at Utah Beach. The landing had been divided into five beaches including Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno >

www.adahub.com

June 6, 1944 marked the largest amphibious military landing in history. This incredible movement of hundreds of thousands of men, millions of tons of equipment and countless ships and other craft signaled the beginning of the end of World War II. While the war would not end for another year, the effective Allied landing on the coast of France changed history forever. The landing became known as D-Day, and June 6, 2009 marks the 65th anniversary of that fateful day. Many of the men who made the landing at France’s Normandy coast that day 65 years ago are now gone. A few of the D-Day veterans remain. One of the D-Day veterans from Ada is Dr. Joe Parsons, a retired ECU professor and longtime Ada community leader. Dr. Parsons, 85, now lives at Sterling House in Ada. On June 6, 1944, he was a 20-year-old U.S. Army corporal from Pharoah, Oklahoma still “wet behind the ears.” Dr. Parsons had enlisted in the Army on July 22, 1943 and trained as an artilleryman at Fort Sill. He was assigned to the 12th Field Artillery Observation Battalion as a forward observer. His actual job was “flash and sound observation.” The Army trained its observers to watch for the flash, smoke or rising dust from a weapon firing, then listen for the sound. With a mathematic calculation based on the speed of sound, the observer could calculate the distance to the weapon. He would then direct fire to that point. “My job was to direct fire,” Dr. Parsons said. “It could get a little uncomfortable because we would often be up in church steeples and other high places trying to get a look at the Germans’ positions. They knew we were doing that so they would make it not very pleasant.” Dr. Parsons joined up with the 12th Field Artillery Observation Battalion at Liverpool, England. Shortly thereafter, he and his fellow soldiers shipped out to the marshaling area near Southampton. This is where the invasion force was gathered. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Dr. Parsons said. “All the men, equipment and tanks were

and Sword. Omaha was the toughest, but Utah was still receiving German artillery fire when the unit landed. “We didn’t lose a man on the beach as far as I know,” Dr. Parsons said. “But we did lose an entire battery between Southampton and Utah when their ship was torpedoed. “The Germans were trying to knock out our artillery with their cannons,” Dr. Parsons said. “The fire became pretty intense. You could really tell when one of those rounds was coming over. It was pretty devastating.” The Germans were employing 88mm flak cannons against the American positions. These “88s” were infamous among Allied soldiers for their accuracy and deadliness. Rounds from the 88s were delivered at high velocity, about two and one-half times the speed of sound. The group of men with whom Dr. Parsons served were “a pleasant bunch of guys.” The men came from across the U.S. “We shared a lot of things,” Dr. Parsons said. “We were together the better part of two years and we became very close.” The one thing all the men had in common, Dr. Parsons said, was the desire to finish the war. “We all wanted to get home in the worst way,” he said. “We thought about home and talked about it all the time. “We all knew the Germans under Hitler wanted to conquer Europe and dominate the world. We knew we had to win and stop them. We were all pretty convinced we were doing the right thing. We just wanted to get it over with.” With the beaches secured and several hundred thousand Allied troops on the ground, the drive across France began. The hedgerow country, Dr. Parsons said, was very tough. The hedgerows were cross-patterned thickets of very thick hedge. The Germans defended them jealously and the advance slowed to a crawl. Eventually, an enterprising group of soldiers figured out how to attach large metal pieces to the front of American Sherman tanks, which allowed the tanks to tear through the hedgerow country. The American advance greatly speeded up, Dr. Parsons said, until the German counterattack which became known as the Battle of the Bulge. “Belgium is where they caught us,” Dr. Parsons said. The Battle of the Bulge was an unexpected German attack in December 1944. The weather

was very cold and the Germans were gambling on capturing equipment and fuel from the Allies. “It was just so bitterly cold there,” Dr. Parsons said. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to lose my ears!’” While trying to keep the Germans at bay, Dr. Parsons said a big topic of conversation was the Russians. “We were very interested in how the Russians were doing from the other side,” he said. “We knew if they had success it would weaken the Germans greatly.” The Germans began running out of resources, Dr. Parsons said, and the attacks let up. “We could tell when they were running out of shells because the 88s really quieted down,” he said. Dr. Parsons recalled vividly the meeting with the Russians at the Elbe River. The meeting was significant because it meant the circle was closing on the German forces. “The Russians were a very rough looking bunch,” he said. One of the most moving experiences Dr. Parsons had during the march across Europe was the liberation of a concentration camp in Germany. “I came up to the camp and opened the front gate,” he said. “I couldn’t believe the way they were treating these people. Women came up to us just crying their eyes out. It was very sad.” From D-Day through the fight across Europe to the German surrender on April 30, 1945, Joe Parsons fought and survived. He and his fellow soldiers were ready to go home. “We wanted to get home and we were happy when we read about the atomic bombs being dropped on Japan,” he said. “We knew we would be shipped to Japan to fight, but the bombings ended the war.” Upon his return to the U.S., Dr. Parsons married his wife, Harol Deane, who is now deceased. He earned his doctorate and was a professor at East Central University for many years before becoming the university’s vice president for student affairs. He served as interim president of ECU between the terms of Dr. Stanley Wagner and Dr. Bill Cole. Dr. Parsons has also been very active in Ada community affairs. He served on the Ada City Council for many years, including terms as mayor. He is also a former member of the Vision Bank board of directors, and has been active in many civic projects. Dr. Parsons retired in 1990. >

The “D in “D-Day actually doesn’t stand for anything.

Fitness

It simply denotes the day a military operation is to commence. The “D simply means “day. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, a total of 6,939 seagoing vessels, including combat ships, landing craft, support vessels and merchant ships, landed a total of 156,000 Allied troops at Normandy. These landings were supported by 11,590 Allied aircraft. D-Day casualties have been traditionally noted at 10,000, including 2,500 dead. However, some private studies have estimated casualties (killed, wounded, missing in action) at almost 20,000 and total killed at 4,600. German deaths were estimated at from 4,000 to 9,000. By D-Day plus five, a total of 326,500 Allied troops had landed at Normandy. The majority of military personnel were American, British and Canadian.

Ada Air Expo by Roy Deering

O

n the heels of last summer’s recordsetting attendance and success, organizers of the 6th Annual Ada Air Expo and Ray Stout Memorial War Bird Fly-In have added hot air balloon and airplane rides and one of the nation’s premier high energy aerobatic air show teams to a weekend packed with entertainment and thrills. The popular event takes place Friday and Saturday, June 19-20, at the Ada Municipal Airport. Included in the BUSY weekend of activities is the 3rd Annual State Championship “Pigs Can Fly” Barbecue Cook-Off, an event sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Hot air balloon rides (weather permitting) are on tap for Friday evening, and the Fly-In and Air Show that is the focus for the entire weekend begins Friday night and continues throughout the day Saturday. Another growing part of the festivities -- The 2nd Annual Ada Air Expo Custom & Classic Car Show -- will feature hot rods and classic cars from across the state Saturday. The air show is named after the legendary Ray Stout, longtime Ada mayor and civic leader, former military pilot and one of the original organizers of the Ada Balloon Expo, a precursor to the air expo and fly-in. By combining some of the best barbecue on earth with airplanes on display and a top-quality air show in the sky – the Ada Air Expo will once again be an outstanding event for the entire family. There are even plane rides available for those who just can’t keep their feet on the ground. More than 5,000 people attended last year’s event, and even more are expected this year, with

the addition of several new attractions. While admission to the event is still free, there will be a $10 fee for parking, good for both Friday and Saturday. Food and drink booths, as well as a number of flight-oriented vendors, will be on hand again this year. For more information about anything connected with the event, go to www.adaairexpo.com. At that website, you can learn more about the weekend schedule, participating pilots who will be attending, and you can even watch videos of the Lima Lima Flight Team. Lima Lima Flight Team Highlighting this year’s Air Show portion of the weekend event is the appearance of the world famous Lima Lima Flight Team from Naperville, Illinois. From its humble beginnings as the Mentor Flyers, Inc. in 1975, they eventually adopted the name “Lima Lima”. For the past 30 years, the squad has performed all over the U.S., but is making its first trip to Ada. The Lima Lima Flight Team demonstration is flown with six T-34 Model A flagship airplanes. It includes several formation configurations, from the six ship wedge and double arrowhead, to the basic finger four and diamond formations. The team has developed a series of aerobatic maneuvers which demonstrate the full range of the T-34 performance envelope. Above all, the Lima Lima Flight Team stresses precision formation flying, and keeping the team in front of the air show crowd during all maneuvers, from take-off to landing. Lima Lima has perfomed in air shows from coast to coast and border to border, >

thrilling more than 100 million spectators with the beauty and grace of their precision performances. Friday night’s Lima Lima performance is a “twilight” show which begins at dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m). The group will take to the air again Saturday. Air Show Featuring a long list of performers, the Air Show portion of the event continues to be the focal point of the weekend, and this year’s list of performers and display aircraft is even longer than in the past. The weekend kicks off with the arrival of aircraft throughout the late afternoon and into the evening Friday, June 19, beginning at 3 p.m. That’s when the gates will open to the public. A hamburger cookout is scheduled to run from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, with the $5 proceeds benefitting the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1005 – Ada. Some of the performers will practice with their aircraft between 4 and 6 p.m. Friday, and the hot air balloon rides (weather and wind permitting) will run from 7-9 p.m. Cost of the tethered balloon rides will be $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. The rides – extending 50-75 feet above the ground – will last approximately 5 minutes each. As many as five people can be taken up at a time, but space will be limited to first-come, first-served. After the “warm up” events of Friday night, things really get busy early Saturday, with gates opening at 8:30 a.m. and airplane rides starting promptly at 9 a.m. Like Friday’s balloon rides, the airplane rides Saturday are on a first-come, firstserved basis, but there are two kinds of airplane rides: Typical Aircraft rides, including Helicopter rides and Aerobatic Airplane rides. The “typical” rides are in a twin-engine plane and run $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. The aerobatic rides run 20 minutes in length and cost $200 per person. For an additional $40, each rider can purchase a DVD of their ride. Pigs CAN Fly The Pigs Can Fly Barbecue contest that began

in 2007 is back again for its third season, and this year’s contest looks like it will surpass those before by a wide margin. Some of the best barbecue cooks in this part of the United States will be on hand to compete for the trophy and the honor of being crowned “champion”. With one of the most unique trophies ever created awaiting the winners, this year’s contest is expected to draw as many as 50 teams – possibly more. Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, the Pigs Can Fly event has drawn teams from all across Oklahoma and neighboring states and organizers expect several out-of-state teams to compete for the trophy again this year. KCBA sanctions numerous events around the country, organized in a circuit not all that different from NASCAR, where competing teams travel from one location to the next week after week. To have the Ada contest listed as a KCBS sanctioned event, organizers had to meet and must continue to follow strict criteria. Judges for the event must be sanctioned and accepted by the KCBS, and teams must follow strict rules about preparation of their barbecue entries. That “officially” makes the Pigs Can Fly contest a BIG DEAL, but it’s the opportunity for the public to taste that barbecue that has captured the attention of many Ada residents. As for that trophy – that’s a story all its own: Last year’s inaugural trophy – complete with a golden winged pig – was awarded to a team from Chandler, Oklahoma. This year, the trophy pig wears an aviator’s cap and will be again awarded to the overall winner. For just $5 people can take a plate around to each of the participating booths and get a sample of the barbecue, something that was really popular last year. Event sponsors expect the public to “eat up” that opportunity again this year. The actual contest takes place Saturday, but teams will be on hand for some opening ceremony events on Friday night. Team members will work Friday night and into the morning Saturday preparing their secret recipes.
