Ada Music Scene

by Roy Deering

From the latest red dirt band and classic blues groups to the always popular country and western bands and hard rock performers, the Ada music scene offers a little of everything at any number of area clubs. continue to play them in the future. “The red dirt movement started several years ago and really has become the ‘hot’ thing across Oklahoma and Texas,” John said. “Back in the 80s it was the urban cowboy stuff, then it was dance and hip-hop that was so wildly popular. Right now, people just can’t get enough of the red dirt music, and we have some of the best coming to our clubs.” Even though the red dirt movement is in full swing, one of the most popular regular draws at The Village has nothing to do with the current fad. Ray Davis, one of the most popular local artists to play the Ada area for years, continues to draw big crowds with his soulful blues. A regular at festivals across Oklahoma and the region, Ray has been a staple at local clubs for years, and continues to be a fan favorite. Another band starting to make a name for itself is Jason Stringfellow and the Ordinary Outlaws, a group made up of Oklahoma musicians. They are just one of the many “local” and regional groups featured at John’s clubs. Other locals include Kevin Pickett, JAG, Local Neighborhood Outlaws and 44 East. For those amateurs interested in “strutting their stuff” on stage, The Village offers karaoke every Wednesday night and “open mike” nights several times a month. >

Whether it’s internationally known artists like Poison or Merle Haggard or regional and local groups just making a name for themselves, music fans have plenty of opportunities to kick back and enjoy quality live music year round. It seems there’s almost always somebody playing somewhere in Pontotoc County. “Live music is alive and well in Ada,” said John Cox, co-owner of three of the hottest nightclubs in the area – C4, Legends and The Village. C4 is located one mile north of the Ada airport, while Legends is located three miles east of Ada on Lovelady Road and The Village is located at 1131 Cradduck Road in Ada. “I have conversations with music fans from around here all the time who drive up to Oklahoma City or down to Dallas, and I tell them that we have bands and performers of the same caliber right here in Ada,” John said. “In fact, sometimes we have the same people they’re having. We have performers who play in front of 30,000 people in Dallas or Oklahoma City, and we have them right here in our back yard.” The hottest music going right now, according to John, across Oklahoma and Texas is red dirt country. Names like Wade Bowen, Jason Boland, Johnny Cooper and No Justice are just a few of those who have played John’s clubs – and will

The First 30 Days: Your Guide to Any Change (and Loving Your Life More) Written by Ariane de Bonvoisin

Ariane de Bonvoisin is the founder of first30days. com, a website that helps people transition through changes. She has an MBA degree form Stanford University and has worked with the Boston Consulting Group BMG, Sony, and Time Warner. The First 30 Days is a book for everyone who needs to develop the skills to embrace change and move through it. Her book focuses on the inevitable changes that are part of life: death, divorce, illness, job loss, house loss, bankruptcy, new job, etc. De Bonvoisin says that some change occurs by choice while other times change is brought on by situations that are out of our control. She says it is important that we be optimistic and have “an attitude that encourages seeing that life is on circumstances.” De Bonvoisin details a change manifesto and a credo of a change optimist, which includes nine principles. Change optimists have positive beliefs about change, life, and themselves. Optimists are resilient, surround by other supportive, positive thinkers, and know that they are connected to something bigger. Change optimists take action, have a plan, and take of themselves. This is a well-written book that uses a nine principle credo, along with quotations, stories, examples, and personal situations to move the reader to look beyond feelings of fear and inertia to develop a new change mind-set. It is a book that at the very least should let you know that you are not alone. “You cannot see around corners. You must seek to keep moving forward, trusting that there’s something good around the bend.”

Crossing Bok Chitto: a Choctaw Tale of Friendship and Freedom Written by Tim Tingle, Illustrated by Jeanne Rorex Bridges

This is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated story of friendship set in the 1800s before the Civil War and the Trail of Tears. Native American storyteller Tim Tingle weaves a tale of friendship between a young Native American girl and Little Mo, an African American slave boy and his family. Their chance meeting occurs when young Martha Tom crosses the Bok Chitto River in search of blackberries. When a sorrowful day comes and Little Mo’s mother is to be sold into slavery, Martha shares her secret of the invisible pathway across the Bok Chitto River. This pathway leads to freedom and security for Little Mo and his family. The story surrounding the Bok Chitto River began as a song and has been passed down through many generations. “Crossing Bok Chitto” is a tribute to the Choctaws – and Cherokees and Creeks and Chickasaws and Seminoles – and Indians of every nation who aided the runaway people of bondage.”

“Those are lots of fun,” John said. “Sometimes the talent level is not the best, but it’s always entertaining.”

ABC Sports Center events drawing enthusiastic crowds For the past two years, the ABC Sports Center (located in the Ada Bowling Center) has hosted live music events in one of the area’s most intimate settings. That continues this month when a brand new band to the area, Brake Vegas out of Dallas, will rock the house at the ABC Sports Center November 8, and management is expecting a packed house once again. “We have pretty good crowds for most of the bands we bring in,” said Chris Holland, who recently took over as manager of ABC, 1020 N. Mississippi. “We have some bands that are favorites here and that have played here several times, and they have a really good following. But our music crowds are pretty good even when we bring in somebody new,” Chris said. “I think people in this area love live music and love the chance to go out, hear somebody play and have a good time.” Chris said the music kicks off somewhere around 10 p.m. on show nights and continues until sometime after 1 a.m. There is a $5 cover charge. “The bands we bring in here are really good

at giving the people a good, long show,” he said. “They usually keep it up until sometime around 1:00 or 1:30, sometimes even later.” One of those “regular” bands – Highrise -- has played at the ABC Sports Center several times, and will be back November 29, pumping out cover tunes from the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Arlis Moon, another favorite, will be in the house December 6

Guardsman back home to

Family & Freedom by Roy Deering

E

ddie Collins remembers vividly the moment last summer he learned his son was being deployed to Iraq. Flipping open his cell phone, the longtime Latta High School baseball coach sorted through text messages until he found what he was looking for. “Here it is. August 29, 2007, at 7:53 p.m.,” Eddie said, holding up the phone. “That’s when I was in the hog pen at home and got the message that Chad was going to Iraq. That’s the kind of thing a parent never forgets.” Now he’s got another memory – and this one’s even better. “I was on the third base line at Dale High School in the regional tournament last week, when I looked up and saw my son,” an emotional Eddie said. “I had promised myself that whenever I saw my boy home again, I’d fall on my knees and say a prayer of thanks to the Lord, and that’s just what I did.” After being away from home more than ten months and in Iraq for a half-year, Chad is back on American soil and is “nearly” home, according to his father. “Yeah, he’s not quite all the way home,” Eddie Collins said. “But he’s at Fort Bliss, Texas, and that’s a whole lot better than him being in Baghdad. We’re just so very thankful. You just can’t imagine.”

www.adahub.com

“I’m glad to serve, and proud to serve and do my part,”

12

During Chad’s absence, the Collins family – like dozens of other Pontotoc County families, relied heavily on prayer and their faith to stay strong while waiting for Chad’s tour of duty to come to an end. Chad, 27, returned home for two weeks earlier this summer before heading back to serve the final three months of his tour. He and his company, the Army National Guard’s 1120th SMC out of Ada, came back for good the

first week in October. The first Sunday Chad was home on furlough, he and Jake ended up leading the singing at their church services. That morning was quite a change from life in Baghdad, where danger, death and destruction are the norm. “It was tough at times,” said Chad, who played on two state champion baseball teams under his father before graduating from Latta in 1999. “You try not to think about all the dangers and all that’s going on around you in that country and you just focus on doing your job and getting home safe.” Married to his wife, Shawn, just two days before he shipped out in December 2007, Chad Collins has an older brother, Derek, a sister, Shawna, and Jake, an eighth-grade student at Latta. Leaving behind his new bride and his very close-knit family was the hardest thing he can remember ever doing. “I’m glad to serve, and proud to serve and do my part,” Chad said. “But I can tell you that day we all said goodbye was tough. It was really sad, and I know none of us will ever forget it.” When asked what kinds of things he enjoyed about being home again, Chad thought briefly and then said, “Freedom.” “I really have learned how free we are and how incredibly blessed and rich we are in America. I don’t think people here realize how free they are every minute of every day. They can not only go to the grocery store when they want, but there is plenty of food to buy and they have money to buy it with,” Chad said. >

Eddie and his wife, Tammy, a Latta elementary teacher, both fought back tears when they talked about the December 2007 day Chad left. Although both said they were extremely proud of Chad’s service to his country and to the people of Iraq, they admitted letting go that day last winter was extremely difficult. “I remember Tammy looking at me when he left, tears running down her face and saying, ‘All I know is I want my baby to come home,’” an emotional Eddie said. “We’ve always been proud of our boys…but it never gets any easier as a parent to let go.” Although Chad is not allowed to speak specifically about the work he did in Iraq for security purposes, he said the days were long, the weather can be extreme and communication with the folks back home was a treasured privilege. “We were based inside the Victory Base Complex, the center of operations for the Coalition Forces in Baghdad,” Chad said. “It’s an enormous complex, roughly the size of the city of Ada, and I think there are about 60,000 coalition troops stationed there. “I remember when we first got there, I just kind of stood there for a few minutes thinking, ‘I’m in Baghdad!’” he laughed. “I mean I knew that’s where I was going, and I thought I was prepared, but you can’t really believe you’re actually there.” Although the entire country of Iraq is considered a war zone, Chad said he seldom ventured outside the gates of Victory Base Camp, spending most all of his time inside the “safety” of the camps fences and walls. “There’s not a safe place anywhere over there,” he said. “And you know that and it’s always in the back of your mind. But, if there is a place in Iraq that’s safer than the others, it’s inside the camp. I didn’t want to go outside if I don’t have to.” Working twelve hour shifts six days a week, there’s not a lot of “time off” for the American soldiers serving in Iraq. But Chad said they did have opportunities to exercise, play a little

basketball or softball and even attend church services when not on duty. He kept in touch with his wife and family through e-mails, clinging to news from back home and cherishing each picture and care package. “I remember just before I left to come home, I took a picture to send home and I think it was about 126 degrees that day,” he said. “A lot of the year, it’s sort of like west Texas – dry and sandy with not a lot of trees. But, in the summer, the temperatures can reach 130 degrees or more and the wind blows that sand so hard it’s like a blowtorch.” Although both Chad and his family were extremely thankful for the time spent together during this summer’s two-week furlough, they said their sites had long set on that day in October when Chad’s company was return home for good. When it finally arrived, the emotions were overwhelming. “He came over and sat in the dugout with me that day at Dale [High School],” Eddie said. “And he looked out there and said, ‘Do you remember when I hit that double here?’ I told him I did remember it.” “That’s what I’m talking about,” Eddie said. “It reminded me that we, as parents, have to treasure each and every moment with our kids while we can, and make memories that we can hold onto when they’re not children any more.” Tammy said the wait for Chad’s return seemed eternal, and that she has even more sympathy for others who wait for their sons, daughters, husbands and wives to return from duty. “The whole time he was home, we were thinking about that day when he’d have to go back, and it does make it hard to really enjoy his time here,” said Tammy. “But then we were all looking forward to October, when he could be home for good, and it seemed like it would never come.” “We’re proud of him, like we are all our children, but you can’t help as a mother to think, ‘I’m so glad it’s over and he’s back home where he belongs.”
