Photoshop Tutorial: Easy Vintage Effects

Creating Vintage Effects

I’d like to share you one of the simple tricks in producing Vintage effect images. 1. Get an image you want to put the vintage effects on. I got mine from Here.

2. Duplicate the image on a new layer by pressing Ctrl+J to duplicate the image. Change the blending mode to Soft Light.

That would make your picture a bit darker and contrasty.

3. Click “create a new layer on the layers palette or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N and hit OK.

4. Click on your foreground color and a color picker will pop-up. Choose a nice dark blue color, mine’s 010f67. You can choose any dark color you want except for black. Hit OK.

5. With the new layer active (Layer 2), go to Edit > Fill, make sure to select the “Foreground Color” and hit OK. The new fill layer is now active, set the blending mode to Exclusion.

You'll now a vintage-looking image!

7. Some old and toy cameras have those natural vignetting effects that the lens itself produce. It helps to draw the eyes of the viewer and makes more attention to the subject. Now let’s put on some vignetting to the image. Again, click “create a new layer” on the layers palette or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N and hit OK. Grab the Lasso Tool and create a rounded pattern on the image, remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Hit Ctrl+Shift+I to invert the selection.

Make sure to put your foreground color to its default setting by picking again the black color or by just pressing “D. Now go to Edit then Fill and choose the foreground color and hit OK like we did in step 5. Press Ctrl+D to deselect. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the radius to 24, hit OK. On the layers palette, set the Opacity of the vignette layer to 50%. Note: You can always remove the unwanted vignette by using the Eraser Tool (E), just use a soft rounded brush by doing so.

8. Lastly, press Ctrl+Shift+E to merge all the layers and adjust the Hue/Saturation. Hit Ctrl+U and set the Saturation to around 20 to 32 and hit OK.

Here’s what I got. Hope you enjoy it. Try it and have fun!
