WHO RUNS THE COURT?
THE GIRLS DO. With a Mission to Make All Athletes Better, Under Armour Announces the UAA Girls Basketball Circuit
A
s Under Armour strives to make basketball inclusive for all, the Under Armour Association (UAA) announces three newly formed grassroots platforms with UAA-Girls, UA Rise and UA Future, which will encompass the entire spectrum of grassroots basketball from 17U to 10U for girls. Inspired by Stephen Curry’s efforts to create an equal playing field for women of all ages, the UAA-G will provide more opportunities for girls to excel on the court. Inviting two female basketball players to participate in his SC30 Select Camp this past summer was just the beginning of Stephen and Under Armour’s combined efforts
6
to shift the landscape of girls’ basketball. “It is as important a time as ever to expand the game of basketball and increase the opportunities for girls across the country to pursue their dreams,” Curry said. “I’ve taken steps to use my own platform to drive awareness and level the playing field for girls and women. I’m proud that Under Armour continues to also take the initiative, with programs like UAA-G, to create opportunities for girls to ‘Ruin the Game’ in their own way.” UAA-G will provide elite girls travel teams with the same league-style circuit as the boys UAA teams, launching in April with 36 teams at the 17U and 16U level.

Cameron Brink, left, and Azzi Fudd, right, pose with Stephen Curry and the Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy at the SC30 Select Camp this past summer.
The teams will participate in 10 regular season games, five final games and three total league sessions with the UAA-G Finals taking place in Atlanta. For a full list of teams and schedules, please see the team’s season previews. The UAA will also expand their leagues for high school and middle school athletes. Similar to the UA grassroots circuits, UA Rise will provide the opportunity for 48 travel teams from all over the country at the 17U, 16U and 15U age groups. UA Rise will also play under the same roof as the UAA during the NCAA certified live periods, creating a powerful recruiting atmosphere. Each team will play twelve games during the regular season, with the top sixteen qualifiers in each age group battling for the UA Rise Championship in Atlanta at the end of July.
Middle school athletes will also be provided with the opportunity to compete at the next level with Under Armour’s UA Future league. UA Future will offer a regional league format for teams in the 14U-10U age groups. It will also become the foundation of UAA’s youth basketball as it seeks to advance the development of young players, teams and coaches to set the course of grassroots basketball. UAA will offer a regional league format for these teams leading to the UA Future National Championship on June 28-20 at HyVee Arena in Kansas City. Under Armour will continue to unleash chaos on the court as the youth basketball space continues to grow, creating more opportunities for players of different playing levels, ages and genders. zzi Fudd might not realize it, but at 15 she already is helping blaze a new trail for girls everywhere. The Arlington, Va. sophomore already has a list of impressive accomplishments, experiences, and opportunities – all thanks to basketball. Fudd is being touted as one of the top prospects in the nation. This past year, she was named the 2019 Gatorade National Player of the Year. She

helped lead her St. John’s College High School team to a 35-1 record and a fourth-straight District of Columbia State Athletic Association Championship this past season. Fudd also won her second-straight Gatorade D.C. Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year award. She’s also won two FIBA World Cup gold medals with Team USA’s youth basketball program. by Under Armour is an experience Fudd is looking forward to. “When I found out Under Armour was going to be involved, I was really excited,” she said. Fudd’s high school is an Under Armour Undeniable School. In addition, Fudd has the distinct honor of being one of two female players invited to Stephen Curry’s SC30 Select Camp last summer, which also is sponsored by Under Armour. “Not many people get to experience this,” she said. “Under Armour cares. They want girls to have the same experience as the guys. I am looking forward to it for myself and my teammates. I’m excited for the experience.” The biggest eye-opener for Fudd was when she was invited to attend the SC30 Select Camp this past summer in San Francisco. Fudd and her mom were traveling directly-
10
from a USA Basketball event to the camp and she recalled asking one of the camp’s contacts what she needed to pack for clothes. She laughed that the contact wasn’t very forthcoming about what all she needed. “We had just come from USA Basketball so I literally had all Nike stuff,” she said. “And we get there and they hand us two boxes full of shoes. And then they gave us a suitcase full of super nice Under Armour stuff – shorts, shirts, jerseys.” Fudd said she was talking to a male camper on the bus on the way to camp one morning and casually asked him about the gear. She was left feeling that this was normal for boys. “Camps for us consist of maybe a pair of shoes and a pair of shorts or a t-shirt,” she said. “If you’re really lucky, you get to keep the jersey. It shocked me that they did that for all of us.”

Azzi Fudd runs a drill with Stephen Curry at the SC30 Select Camp this past summer. Fudd was one of two female players invited to attend the camp for elite players across the nation.
Fudd saw Under Armour’s care for female athletes on display again this past year when she went to the GEICO Nationals with her high-school team and the entire team received new gear. “It shows how much they really care. Women’s basketball has gotten bigger every year,” she said. “UA is doing a great job of growing the platform. But they do it in a better way than the big time organizations do by showing they care. “My mom is so happy for me that I get to experience this kind of stuff,” she said. “I see what I and the other girls get to do and it’s going to make them want to play basketball and show them what the game will do for them. There are so many life-changing experiences that comes from playing basketball.”
A Family Affair
Like many players in the GUAA, Fudd comes from a family that eats, sleeps, and breathes bas-
ketball. The only difference is that Fudd’s parents are both former Division 1 basketball players and have had the same or similar experiences as their daughter is currently experiencing. “(My parents) taught me everything I know,” Azzi said. “They share their experiences with me. They’ve been through everything I’m going through. I feel so lucky to have them in my life and to have them teaching me.” Mom Katie played collegiately for North Carolina State and Georgetown before being drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 2001 WNBA Draft. Dad Tim played college ball for American University and professionally overseas. Both Tim and Katie have coached at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels, in addition to helping their daughter develop her game. Continued on Page 87

ASHLEY CHEVALIER The 2019 Southern California Player of the year is just one of many accolades Chevalier received as she had a standout junior year in leading Sierra Canyon to a 33-1 record and an Open Division California State Championship. She averaged 19 points and 6 assists throughout the playoffs and 13.4 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 5.3 apg during regular season play. Ashley is a true play-maker and lock down defender; change of speed, basketball IQ and ability to score makes her hard to guard. Committed to the University of Texas at Austin.
JAYDA CURRY The 5’6 sophomore is an exceptional combo guard with tremendous speed and scoring ability. She is a sharp-shooter with range and can get to the basket at will. She is one of the top 5 point guards in California and arguably the No. 1 point guard in California for 2021. Jayda averaged 15.3 ppg, and made 79 three-pointers to lead Corona Centennial. Jayda is a high Division 1 prospect who will unleash chaos on the 17U UAA circuit.

P
eople ask me, “Cassy, do you want to be the best-ever female basketball photographer?” My response has and always will be, “I want to be the best basketball photographer. Period.” I’ve been photographing high school basketball and NBA players from baseline to baseline across the country since 2011. A majority of the pick-up games, summer ball tourneys and after-school games I’ve shot have been of male players only. But basketball is an incredible community, and has been blessed with some of the most fascinating and strong-willed women in sports history who have continued to chip away at that glass ceiling. Names like Pat Summitt, Bertha Teague, Muffet McGraw, Becky Hammon, Doris Burke, the list goes on and on – women who have embraced the sport and empowered me to feel emboldened in what I do. So, when I heard the news about Stephen Curry inviting two young women to his fifth annual, invite-only SC30 Select Camp in the Bay Area featuring the top high school players in the nation, I knew I needed to be there. I can’t think of another time an NBA athlete has invited female ballers to his elite summer camp; this would be history in the making, and I could be there to capture — and be a part of — another crack in that glass ceiling, helping build to the day when we get to shatter it, together.
