PROGRAM COURTYARD

The office building is designed in the spirit of the „Activity Based Working” trend, in the flexibility of space. This is one of the most important factors influencing

INDIVIDUAL WORK

a good quality of work. Thanks to the column-beam structure, spaces are made flexibly to be freely transformed in the future. There is no one ideal model for the function of the building - it is the employees who define it. The „organigram” became the base for the design of the program layout, through which the most important relationships between the spaces were created. The definition of the spaces that should be connected to the entrance or the street:

ISSUES

ANALYSING THE PROBLEM Courtyards for parkings Those spaces are not adapted to the friendly outside space for inhabitants

The competition covered the area of the Partyzantów Street in Gdańsk. The main topic was the revitalization of the space around the street, restoring its former, local character. The competition tasks have been carefully listed: •

Carrying out a transport analysis in Gdańsk and rearrangement of traffic in favor of

Streets for cars, not pedestrians This contributes to the lack of urban life around the street

a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly space. Designing safe access to the primary school located on the border of the case study •

Transformation of the part of Partyzantów Street into Woonerf, limiting car traffic

Development of the site providing new Lack of friendly public spaces Mostly destroyed postmodern buildings with no attractive activities

IDEA The idea of GREEN(HOUSE) is based on living in a community in the presence of nature. Residents

for residents. Partyzantów street was transformed into a woonerf with a contrasting floor, so the passing cars would intuitively slow down. The city square has been boldly re-interpreted here - in our opinion, city life can also take place in courtyards, where the ambiance is more local and friendly. It is thanks to the organic passages through buildings that urban life „spills” inside the courtyards.

PROGRAM

WATCH OUR VIDEO!

The program consists of a variety of services that make the space more attractive. There are food services such as a cafe or restaurant - an important aspect of them is the possible access from both the street and the courtyard. Additionally, the space is filled with a fitness room, a flower shop, a grocery store, and a music store. A kindergarten was also designed while maintaining the continuity of educational institutions in the area. A large greenhouse has been designed to which residents have access. The gym (as one of the competition requirements) is located right next to the primary school. This access is going via an underground passage (the gym is located both on level -1 and 0). The gym is also an important element of the space - it has a green roof with access by organic stairs.

”BALCO” MODULAR BALCONY BRINGING MODULARITY TO BALCONIES „RetroFit” UNI International Competition In collaboration with Adam Bieniek Sketchup Photoshop Illustrator Award: Editors choice

29

IDEA

GDANSK WRZESZCZ

To realize the idea of the balcony with different functions, we were inspired by origami art. Thanks to the paper pleating technique you can change the form without losing the good stucture properties. We started with a simple paper A4, which was a base of origami studies. Finally, we found a modul with dimensions of 20x20cm, that can be folded to triangles.

20m

BUILDING TYPOLOGIES

WINDOW SHAPES

30

MODULARITY The main idea of the standard modularity is giving a whole modul to create a complex form. However, with the dimensions of 2m x 2m x 2,4m we can extend the balcony only by multiplying these dimensions.

With the structure based on micro-modularity, we can freely adjust the balcony to the different shapes. This gives the freedom to modify the form for the needs of new functions.

31

STRUCTURE The modules are taken by the steel frame. Surfaces are made of a perforated sheet which is a light and durable material. The porosity of the material allows airflow through the surface with less interference to the structure’s balance. It gives us the possibility to experience outdoor space better.

USE IT! Thanks to the flexibility, the user can change the form according to the needs. Can a balcony be something more? Each part of the model can be modified separately. The user has the freedom to create its own unique space. We can create a place for a seasonal garden or for sunbathing. We don’t have to define what are the current needs, we give a form that can be modified individually.
