Naturally, we have projects in our homeland: the events of the anniversary campaign Republic of Estonia 100, the light solutions in Eesti Rahva Muuseum, Tallink and Silja Ferries, Hilton Tallinn Park hotel, etc. To manage all this, we have thoroughly renewed our production facilities. We have our production division in Estonia comprising 4000 m2 of production and storage area, all employees are specialists in their field. In the autumn of 2017 the production division moved into new modern premises, this year the logistics and storage was renewed. The most important keyword for us is– quality. NERIJUS CHMIELIAUSKAS HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN CHRISTMAS LIGHTS MARKET FOR A DECADE. WHILE PEOPLE MOSTLY SEE ONLY THE FACADE OF CHRISTMAS, HE ALSO KNOWS THE HARD WORK INVOLVED IN CREATING IT.

Nerijus is an MBA by education. It is a diploma that helps him to organise things, to run the company, deal with clients. But he also generates ideas and gives tasks to designers.

“It is not always the designer that has the best ideas for creative projects,” Nerijus says. So in Adam input of all people involved is used. In the first stages of a project, you can see in the meeting room not only Nerijus and a designer but also several people working in sales, the development manager, members of the installation team. Their advice is needed as sometimes clients come up with ideas that are either too expensive or might look good only in your mind but not in real life as you need to pay attention to specifics of light, to surroundings, to materials, and to the effect that you are after. If you put a 12 meter Christmas tree in a small square it will look nice and cozy but you will not get the same effect if you put it in a huge field, for example. Nerijus has worked in the field of Christmas decorations for around 10 years, having taken about half a year off before joining Adam in 2011. “When you work in such a field, you feel that it is Christmas all year long,” he says. Even watching movies and TV sometimes he does not see the events in focus but the background where there are Christmas decorations, lights and trees, thinking: “That street is nicely decorated.” This might seem a case of professional disease, but a friend of Nerijus recently disagreed, saying it looks more like passion: if you are not into it, you don’t see that. “Currently I can see that I’m passionate about Christmas,” Nerijus contends.

HIGH SEASON

utting his twin boys to bed, somehow an idea flashed in Nerijus Chmieliauskas’s head to make a Christmas tree in the shape of a Santa Claus, with a bag of gifts and everything. “You never know when you get an idea,” says Nerijus, head of Lithuanian branch of Adam, who’s also responsible for company’s yearly catalogue. He says you can get a lot from kids: from their paintings or the movies they watch. Putting yourself into the shoes of a child does really help when thinking about Christmas decorations. His twins, almost 5 by now, are also his main critics: “If you show them an idea, and they go ‘mmmm’, that means ‘no way!’”

Ideas are important. There are not many clients that have a detailed plan what kind of decorations they want. Mainly they have an idea for a theme – like a sporty Christmas tree or a green city or an ice world – but do not know how to implement it. This is one of the strengths of Adam. While around half of the clients make do with catalogue products, the company does not sell only standard solutions as do many competitors but is able to adapt to all clients personally. Even for small clients who don’t find what they are looking for among standard products, it is possible to offer custom-made solutions based on their ideas or sketches.

In earlier years the season for Adam used to last from September to January. “Now I can say it’s high season all the time,” Nerijus quips. These days sales for Christmas products go on during the whole year. Adam has also expanded their summer range of products for events like weddings, parties, receptions. “It’s really interesting to work on different markets,” says Nerijus, who is also responsible for sales on multiple export destinations. For a person who likes to travel this is where hobbies and work coincide. Different markets give insights into national variation. “Each country has its own taste in Christmas lights,” Nerijus points out. Even the Baltic countries that have much in common (like not being particularly good in football, one of his passions) diverge quite clearly when it comes to Christmas decorations. The ˃˃

best-selling product for Estonia Nerijus has sold only four pieces in Lithuania. As in every job, it is important to get feedback on your performance. Every year Adam has some, maybe around ten big projects like a whole city or a store chain. “You see the huge feedback from people,” Nerijus says. “If the feedback is positive it gives a lot of energy, a lot of inspiration to create new ideas.”

BIGGEST PROJECT

For Nerijus personally, the biggest project was the illumination of the castle in Kaunas, a 45 meters high building that is very visible in the city, where about 6000 meters of lights were used. A park by the castle was decorated as a garden of childhood. Nerijus is not afraid to be different, to be original. That does not always bring success as people might not understand it. One of the Christmas trees in sporty style was branded the worst Christmas tree ever in the media even before it was lit up. But, in the end, when it was lit up, the public quite liked it. Another important source of feedback are tenders that comprise about a fifth of all projects and, being usually relatively large, a much bigger percentage of the turnover. “It allows to see whether your ideas are good or not,” Nerijus explains. “It allows you to check yourself against competition not only in quality or price but also in terms of projects.” Many projects are quite small, how-

ever: a mid-sized store, maybe a street. A standard family house can be decorated for a few hundred euros. Nerijus decorates his own Christmas tree, a natural fir tree in the yard of his house quite simply, just with warm white light bulbs. “I’m very happy it’s considered one of the most beautiful Christmas trees in the district,” says Nerijus, who has seen cars slowing down to take a closer look at it. In winter time, especially as his wife also works for Adam, it may be hard to find enough time for children. “For me, the real Christmas starts after Christmas,” Nerijus says. “Before that, it’s work.” So he is playing with the idea of writing someday a book called The Other Side of Christmas. As in many walks of life, people mostly see only the façade of Christmas, but there is also the hard work, the organisational things, the difficulties, the problems that you face during that process. A supporting family always helps. “I’m very happy that our kids are very interested in what we do, value what we do, they are happy to see the results,” Nerijus says. “That also inspires me to go on.”

A TREE IS NOT JUST A TREE Estonians’ tastes are more Scandinavian, with some standard shapes like snowflakes, and few colours. In Lithuania you need a combination of different materials, lights, and colours, sometimes 3D objects. In Germany, 90 percent of clients are asking standard Christmas decorations: warm white light, green garlands, red balls, and golden stars. In each case, obviously, there are some unique projects for companies and cities that try to make things differently. In Lithuania every Christmas tree has to be different. It is unimaginable to use the same decorations several years in a row. The country has a tradition of Christmas trees that are not just trees with decorations but also tell a story, project an idea. “Our Estonian and Latvian colleagues don’t understand it, there a tree is just a symbol,” Nerijus says. In Lithuania yearly competitions are held where the best Christmas tree is chosen and online media is overflowing with many photos of different Christmas trees.

BRINGING CHRISTMAS LIGHTS OUTDOORS – AND OFF THE TREE Original Christmas lights were on a Christmas tree – and indoors. Today it is common to decorate whole cities. Earliest electric Christmas lights in the last couple of decades of the 19th century were an expensive affair, available only to the richest Americans. To decorate a Christmas tree you needed to call a wireman who installed complicated wiring for the lights. Every light bulb needed to be wired separately. The whole matter would cost thousands of dollars in today’s money. Also, if you did not happen to live in a big city that had an electricity network, you also needed to have a household generator installed. And actually, many of the earlier electric Christmas light bulbs got so hot when used that rendered these not much less fire-prone than usual candles they were meant to replace.

STARTED IN AMERICA

All began to change in the beginning of 1900s as pre-assembled kits of Christmas lights came to the market. These were also not exactly cheap costing around 12 dollars, an average worker’s weekly salary. At around these times some people also started to decorate other objects like mantles and doorways inside their homes with strands of Christmas lights. But getting to the Christmas lights as we know now still took some time. Outdoor Christmas trees with electric lights started to get popular in American

cities in the early decades of the 20th century. But outdoor electric wiring and lights were at first still a luxury not available to the general public. Although there were some sets that were marketed as safe to use outdoors, actually these were small, dangerous and not quite suitable for an average family. Safe kits of outdoor Christmas lights became available to the general public in the end of 1920s. Companies that were selling such sets sponsored “decorating

By the middle of 20th century it became increasingly popular to decorate not only Christmas trees but also streets and buildings with chains of electric lights. At first this was organised by cities, with many communities arranging Grand Illumination ceremonies when Christmas lights were lit. But Americans soon also started to decorate rafters, roof lines, and porch railings of their homes and businesses with Christmas lights reaching average American homes in the 1950s. This practice soon spread to Europe. While some claim that this is tied to Christmas transforming into a more secular, commercial and family-oriented, and less of a religious festivity, this connection seems a bit far-fetched. Although this may have been a process that coincided with the introduction of outdoor Christmas lights to Europe, the tradition originates in America where Christmas has always been and still is a very religious holiday – although always also a commercial one. Be as it may, Christmas lights have reached by now not only in America and Europe but even many not traditionally Christian regions like Japan or Hong Kong.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD QUALITY LED PRODUCT? In LED lighting, there are a lot of terms, speciﬁcations and promises that describe the quality of the product using LEDs as a light source. For example, lifetime in hours. The reality is that quality, meaning longevity, fault free operation and very good working parameters, is determined by a lot of variables in combination.

1. RESISTANCE TO WEATHER Our products as a whole set include cables, quick connectors, lamps, sockets, junction boxes that withstand even the hardest weather conditions. Our standard IP44 rated products meet the demands of this ingress protection level easily and exceed many of them. This year we are introducing additionally the IP67 product line, which exceeds the needs of even the most demanding conditions.

Color temperature explained Color temperature is a speciﬁcation, which describes if light is yellowish, neutral or bluish. It is applicable only to white light. In our catalogue we mainly use two distinctions: Warm White and Cool White - these are both versions of white light, but they diﬀer from each other by color temperature. The color temperature unit is Kelvin [K]. For example: 3000K (three thousand degrees Kelvin). It is somewhat counterintuitive, but the bigger the number (higher temperature of the light) the colder the light is. 2. LIGHT CONSISTENCY A good LED product is manufactured using LEDs with proper speciﬁcations. By managing our supply of LED chips, we can achieve a lot: 1. We keep our colors the same throughout the years. It means our clients can add lights to an existing installation and the old ones look similar to the new ones. 2. The LEDs we use in our products are of good quality, hence they don’t have changes in their color temperature throughout their lifetime. 3. Good quality LEDs also mean that the brightness of our products is still very high even after many years of use. 4. We also take seriously the consistency of color temperature among each LED in a Decolight lightstring, ropelight etc. It means that if you look at the lights in a row, you see uniform color temperature throughout the whole product.

Sun is a big factor to consider in outdoor installations. It is not advisable to cut costs by using PVC cable instead of rubber cable. We use only high-quality rubber cables, which give our high-end LEDs an opportunity to perform for a long time. Electrical cables need protection from the UV-light that comes from the sun. If you add freezing temperatures to the equation, the question of rubber cables becomes even more important. It is extremely important to have a soft and bending cable in your product, even in freezing temperatures and we use only materials, that meet such demands.

In winter decorative lighting aluminum has become the standard material to use for frames. But not all manufacturers can take full advantage of this material. Aluminum frame quality is mostly related to two big areas of expertise: actual quality of bending and welding. During decades of working with aluminum, we have developed a manufacturing facility, which incorporates all the tools, benches, know-how and, of course, the best experienced team in the ﬁeld. Our frames are professionally made and stay aesthetically pleasant for years. But more than that, before anyone starts to cut, bend or weld a frame, there needs to be an idea. Our team of engineers and designers work out the best solutions for frames.

A chain is as strong as the weakest link. Connectors might seem insignificant at first glance, but they are as important in a chain as any other component in terms of product quality. Our installations are often outdoors and it is very important to keep water out from electrical connections. We have achieved it by development and testing of different materials and connectors.

RGB LED DECOLIGHT & SMARTLED DECOLIGHT A FOURTH DIMENSION OF AN INSTALLATION – TIME. We have introduced controllable colour changing lighting into our Decolight product line. It is now possible to lift the designs onto a whole new level, a fourth dimension is added to your installation – time. It is not static anymore, the installation is changing and even moving in a sense. It is now possible to achieve control over color and animation of lights on winter lighting projects on different levels. Here we explain the differences between our two product lines RGB LED Decolight and SmartLED Decolight

RGB LED DECOLIGHT This product has 7 built in colors and even some color changing and flashing effects. There is no complicated controller array to think about - just plug in the lights and make a choice between the existing colours and effects by using the included remote. RGB LED Decolight is best for installations, where the lights are static or flashing and where there is a need to choose from the 7 preset colors for example each day or each month. If you need animated lights with more controlling possibilities, we suggest using SmartLED Decolight.

From the remote you have next possibilities ● Choose from 7 static colors (neutral white, red, green, blue, light blue, magenta, yellow) ● Turn on a static multicolour effect ● Turn on and off a random white flashing function ● Turn on and off a few different color changing effects and fullflashing effects ● Change the speed of the color changing and fullflashing effects

SMARTLED DECOLIGHT This productline includes lights and controllers which enable you to have full control over each LED. It means you can make animations where each LED is a pixel. You can have whatever color you like by adding Red, Green and Blue light to each other (RGB). Moreover you can create animations and control an installation as one synchronized project. For example a street that has waves of colour moving up and down the street. So SmartLED Decolight is best for colourful projects where you need to do one or more of the following: ● Mix your own colors (VS 7 preset colors of the RGB LED Decolight) ● Create animations with moving colours ● Control the animated project as a single synchronized product/street/room etc The effects are stored in a controller box on an SD-card. To switch to a next effect file on the card, you can simply push a button on a controller. The product ships with included effects but it is also possible to order custom made effects, which means we can map out an installation and our designers can produce the effect keeping in mind the clients special requests. These effect files can be sent via e-mail and uploading to the controller’s SD-card is done using a computer. A free PC app is also available to enable the client to make their own effects.

LED Strip

Adam Decolightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s product line has featured different ropelights for years. Now we are also offering possibilities to illuminate your indoor or outdoor project with LED Strips. LED Strip is basically ropelight with powerful SMD LEDs, which makes it similar to product like wallwashers (brightness wise). The models with high number of LEDs give enough light to illuminate a room or a facade. We can produce and install LED Strips with various colors light outputs and also voltages. 12V LED Strips have RGB versions with various ways of controlling the light-show. While 12V LED Strips are already known in the market, the 230V SMD LED Strip is relatively new. We have tested 230V products with good results. You can have a strip with a length of up to 50m, which is powered only from one starting cable.

LED SCREENS LED screens are becoming more and more popular all over the world. Since Adam Decolight knows it’s way around with LEDs and metal structures, we have made it our priority to get to know the LED screens well. We have set up outdoor screens as well as indoor screens. We have been part of designing and building metal constructions for the screens to be mounted on streets and also worked with architects to integrate the screens into a newly built houses. As always we will take the project as a whole: starting with the visualizations of the different sized screens on your location and finishing with the complete working system ready to fill the demands of the client. GOBO PROJECTORS

Adam Decolight’s Innovative Product Line features a technology originated from theatre lighting. Profile spotlights or in other words projectors, which are specially developed for outdoor use. The projectors can project any kind of visual still images onto different surfaces. Main article being Building Facade Light Design. Very high light output discharge lamps grant a crisp image, which will stand out in the cityspace as something interesting. The image is projected by focusing light through a glass, which has an image printed on it. This piece of glass is called a gobo. By replacing gobo effects, you can replace the whole light design. Designing and producing new gobo effects is very economical way for renewing a light design. *A line of moving effects is also available (water and fire effect, gently falling snow, stars or notes etc.)

Before installing any garlands, motifs or decorations please make sure that the surfaces that you plan to fix the decors on (walls, poles, trees, constructions etc) are strong and stable enough to hold the items and preserve peoples safety. Always use professional fixation materials and tools to get the best result. We recommend using Adam mounting, connection and electric accessories (See ACCESSORIES section) for maximum quality and safety of your installation. If you need any help with the installation, please contact us for advise and service or order the installation service from the professionals.

GENERAL POLE MOTIF INSTALLATION: USE (see ACCESSORIES section) - Pole mount 58001.50 - 2 pcs per motif - 3 pcs per motif over 3m - Metal strip 58005.50 - 2 strips per one Pole mount - Metal clips 58006.50 - 2 clips per one Pole mount

1. Fix the hooks from 58001.50 to a motif.

2. Fix the base from 58001.50 on a pole using metal strip 58005.50 and clips 58006.50.

3. Assemble both parts of 58011.50, secure together and connect power cable to the power source.

1. Attach the wires to the motif.

2. Fix the motif to the wall at the fixation points on the motif using screws.

3. Attach the wires to the top of the wall for extra safety and connect power cable to the power source.

Be aware that decorations include an IP44 power cable (length – 150cm) with the location of the cable shown in the drawings below. If you need longer power cable or want to change the location of it, please inform us about your needs before placing the order. IMPORTANT!
