Introduction to course. Welcome to the Motor Vehicle Section at Swindon College. We trust your time spent with us will be both rewarding and helpful to your future development. Our staff are dedicated to ensuring that your knowledge and practical abilities within the motor trade will be enhanced by; formal teaching, practical demonstrations and individual practice. As well as becoming successful with your studies, we want you to enjoy studying at Swindon College. Some students inevitably encounter problems and these can be either academic or personal, they can, in most instances, be solved satisfactorily, you just need to speak to a member of staff. Help is available from a number of sources: these include student counselling and the health and welfare service that both provide confidential guidance.

It is essential that EACH LEARNER knows there is help at hand. If you experience problems, please speak with your personal tutor, or any of the Student Experience Managers (SEM’s see page 15), College Counselling team or Health and Welfare Services, which provide a confidential service for all students. General Points. The Diploma at Level 3 is awarded to learners who can prove competence in a number of areas to satisfy National Occupational Standards (NOS). The awarding body is IMI Awards. More information can be found at www.imiawards.org.uk 3|Page

To complete the course successfully the student needs to: • Complete a College-based practical e-portfolio proving your proficiency in workshop tasks. This will include answering questions set relating to the tasks. • Pass five modular online multi-choice theoretical tests. • Complete a reasonable amount of Work Experience • Complete unit based written assignments • Complete 2 Functional Skills at level 2 including: • English • Maths The practical e-portfolio (which is your responsibility to maintain) will be online and completed at college or at home, by the individual with assistance from the College staff. The completed e-portfolio is then reassessed for authenticity by the College internal verifier and finally checked and cleared by the external verifier. To enable this process to be successful your study pattern will take the form of you attending College for the theoretical and practical aspects of the motor trade, along with the functional skills element, and guidance on your practical e-portfolio. In addition you must put effort in to ensure you keep up to speed in all areas of work, by doing extra work at home and completing all revision exercises. Completion of your e-portfolio occurs when you have satisfactorily completed all elements, toward the end of the year. You will also have provided proper, authenticated evidence in the form of college job cards. 4|Page

The Level 3 Diploma Course. The course will last for approximately 34 weeks and will not be extended for any reason other than the College not meeting their obligations toward the student with respect to time allocation. The workshop practice will involve general workshop tasks to give practice in many areas to allow students to become more proficient, along with an integration of underpinning knowledge topics. The course will be carried out on a modular basis, covering: • • • • •

Electrical Engine Chassis Transmission Inspect vehicles

Once each module has been completed you will be entered for an online multiple choice exam. In these exams you must obtain an overall minimum mark of 60% to be successful. To complete the qualification you need to complete a written assignment for each unit. This must be your own work and handed in on or before the date set. Any extensions must be authorised by meeting with the Course Tutor and Curriculum Area Manager (CAM). If you do not achieve a pass first time you will be given clear feedback and a new submission date. If you do not meet the new date set or do not meet the criteria, another assignment will need to be authorised by the course tutor and CAM. 5|Page

Course Organisation. You should be aware that the course is run on a Task-Based Learning strategy wherever possible.

What’s that all about? Task based learning is a teaching strategy that allows all students to learn at their own pace, away from a more structured classroom activity where deadlines have to be met within a limited time period. Obviously, this will require each student to become more responsible for their own learning, along with teacher support. Therefore it is assumed that in the first instance the student is motivated and the student has an interest and wants to learn. Any tasks set can be completed on an individual basis, by doing group work or a combination of these, both within the college environment, and any other place of study when time permits. To try and give a clear understanding to the student, the underpinning knowledge modules are split up into bite sized chunks and have included a review at the end of each section that must be completed in due course.

Remember, you are not on your own and assistance can be immediately available, when needed. The lecturer can spend more time with any individual who needs additional help, and the good thing is the lecturer can talk with you, rather than talk to you. We hope you find the exercises rewarding, fulfilling, and enjoyable. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 6|Page
