1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

These three fundamental architectural elements are explored to convey and replacing the practical architectural languages. Developing and understanding all of these styles in depth and space and creating compression of lighting, framing and other experiences, the functions and performances of all the details will be distinctive. Various of arrangements between these components are grouped together and pointing out modern feelings through out architecture design.

POINT/LINE/PLANE

1.1

Research&Models Beginning the investigation of how 2D painting is transforming into a 3D space structure, it appears that layers of squares will reveal a strong dynamic composition. Developing the two dimensional drawings’ idea further into my P/L/P design, cutting and digging into the underground to create a 3D landscape form. With creating an abstract visual structure, it directly and clearly shows a simple but strong evocatively structure. In this way, the landscape begins with layers of artificial landforms. Parallel steps gradually go deep under the ground surface. Three diagonal underground structures have different arrangement of staircases and steps. Different views will appear underneath and from the top down. To continue with the artificial P/L/P idea, the edges of the landscape and layers of square platforms are designed to reveal the intersections and relationships among P/L/P.

MASS

1.2

Research&Drawings

Large, solid and dark architectural experience provide subtle and evocative design in many region around architecture design. Playing with lighting and solid material like concrete to create deep and synthetic atmosphere. According to several Japanese modern architecture design, the Church of Light, the Chi-Chu Art Museum and Teshima Art Museum. Constant solid shell creates massive enclosure space and a forbidden feeling in experience. Idea of the MASS program is to create an underground enclosure space which allows lighting condition form different angles. Deep dark underground structure is the best way to demonstrate this idea, playing with this experience of mass, space and interior lighting condition. Causing tension and shading for the underground part, the journey of a figure travel under the upper artificial crafting of the landscape.

FRAME&INFILL

1.3

Research&Models Different consideration of Frame and Infill will be introduced by various designers. Solid and fixed components are mixed and placed into grids, by playing around with different shapes of components with different materials, and to create a combination of organic and artificial elements. Distinctive perspective views of the architectures will be viewed through experience.

So innovating the idea of Frame, without physically intersecting and crossing each other, representing the frame in a dynamic way and create gap and space between all the solid frame components. All the components are perpendicular to each other but in a three dimensional space, grouping the space and reassemble it.

After having understanding information of those three basic concepts, the idea of the Herring Island Program has been bound and directed into an existing idea and a special perspective. Analyzing the site as well as reconsidering how people actually have their experience inside. Separate the consideration into the following analysis and assemblage, and come up with a complete and resourceful design.

HERRING ISLAND Site

2.1

Analysis

Herring Island is an artificial and the only island in Yarra river. Surrounding trees and river provide inside this secret and private place. The island is public from spring and summer times, special private boats are the only transport way to access the island. Sculptural artworks and art gallery are placed all among the island which are hidden by the trees and surrounding environment. The idea of secret is complex. One way of keeping a secret away from the surrounding neighborhood is to hide the secret with natures and architectures, and another way is to create a landscape structure into the design and deep into the ground. The secret pattern or secret object can only be viewed when the people get around the space.

Sun Path Diagram

The site location is at the south heart side of the Herring Island, an open space surrounding by trees and provide Barbecue space for families’ picnic and entertainment. The design idea combines the surrounding environment and the public seasons, considering all the aspects.

PAVILION&CONCEPT

2.2

Research A public space with special design and several opening spaces, it may be some underground structures and may be some framing architecture for a public space. Pavilion plays a functional public space of pleasure and provides extinguish experience to the surrounding neighborhood.

During the transparency between different cultures and times, the inner spirits and functions among all the different pavilions will be various and specific. Continue with three relationships’ tectonics and existing ideas and components, an artificial and also the only island of the Yarra River which is placed between the center suburbs could potentially create a huge opportunity for a pavilion somewhere over the site.

CONCEPTACLE

2.3

Concept Design Sketches&Model

So a potential and existing idea occurred, with the connection between the previous three relationships and moved from an artificial 2D structure into a underground space with secrets revealed somewhere. With basically all artificial and no organic forms, distinct form all the surrounding nature and environment. Defuse a 2 dimensional square foundation into many small pieces of square and connect the existing ideal square pieces together, into a spiral visual style formation. Grouping all the squares together and pushing them with gravity and depth, an “Anti-Ziggurats style of a conceptacle.

FINAL DESIGN

2.4

Drawings&Experiences&Models

Toilets of Female, male and disabled people

Recording Room and Storage Room

A 30mx30m’s sunken plaza is located and designed with a shrine in the middle of this plaza. Basically an underground landscape will be a secret itself. Considering of various sculptures that are placed and separated on the island, people and families always want to get near of a sculpture or an architecture when they saw it, and that will be the situation when they saw the corner functional building and an open plaza.

When circulation and experience came near to the plaza, they will see the central shrine immediately. The sunken structural style is like a swallowing and sinking desert or a vortex, with that single shrine in the middle. People are forced by this landscape and maybe also by themselves to discover what is in that small shrine.

Opening time for the island is during the day time, playing with this idea, I created a dark inner space which had no lighting condition. After the sunken steps have gathering people into this shrine, instead of placing the secret much more steps deep down the structure, the secret is going to be viewed on the top. People get into the shrine and close the door, the space only allows one person per time to reveal the secret. People start to adapt the dark environment, a small angle of vaulted ceiling of a luminous Jupiter will start to show, glowing and start to reveal the secret of this shrine. Only one person will face the universe, to embrace the feeling of infinity. Isolation, tininess and insignificant feeling will arise. Potentially a universe that people will never understand completely and they can only have a glimpse of it.

REFLECTION

3.0

Getting a deep architecture and landscape design idea throughout the entire course’s exercise, the first half of the semester would be valuable for my design research and tectonic development ability. I start to spend more and more time on thinking and doing physic models to identify the possibilities of my idea and concept, removing and adding elements to the existing idea to achieve a new level of designing idea. Three solid and fundamental tectonic idea of P/L/P, Frame&Infill and Mass, gave me specific and helpful directions to reflect my ideal development and arrangement of space and architecture. Create more insightful and interesting composition of dynamic and static ideas. I believed the first half of this semester’s works really increased and boarded the thinking possibilities of me. The next half of this semester increased more design conditions and considerations into our tasks. With the analysis of specific sites, surrounding areas and other limits for this specific Herring Island, I started to rearrange the previous idea and mixed it with the existing environment. No restriction or limits for our realistic or unrealistic design, I felt I can easily grouping the president ideas; continued all the specific details of the and make my idea much more special and unique. Although the final composition lost some potential and interesting tectonics because I was so realistic and stick to the instructions, I believed I could have been better and gone further with my three dimensional idea. Overall, special thanks to my tutor, this studio really helped my fully engage into different tectonic training and I really gained a lot during my way of processing these designing problem and come up with a good and strong compositional idea.
