Folio A Academic Projects 2013 Biblioteca Comunale di Trastevere Rome, Italy
Project in Summary The aim of this studio was to consider the written word as a starting point for architectural design, with a library as the final output. Set in Rome, in the vibrant district of Trastevere, the constrained site was spatially and topographically challenging. A market to the North of the site had to be accommodated. My approach was to create a ‘winged’ plan punctured with lightwells to maximise daylight, while mitigating the effects of large openings to the busy street. The scheme comprised stacks, study space and exhibition space.

Folio A Academic Projects 2013 Research Station Isle of Rum, Scotland
Project in Summary Set on the inner-hebridean island of Rum, this studio questioned whether ‘energy’ and its effects could be reproduced visually as part of a series of studios exploring ‘Drawing energy’. This led to an architectural proposal which considered an economy of means: to what extent can extraneous space be minimised, trimmed and tailored to programmatic requirements? The resulting scheme for an oceanographic research station was an off-grid, selfsustaining building with a small dock, laboratories, equipment storage and residential accommodation.

Folio A Academic Projects 2015 Biolux Edinburgh, Scotland
Project in Summary The final design studio of my undergraduate education, ‘Appearances and Essences’, was centred around a site in Edinburgh at the base of Edinburgh Castle rock. The studio sought to imagine every student’s projects concurrently, requiring a high level of collaboration to reconcile borders and create public access routes. Following on from an initial mapping exercise which focussed on our digital ‘footprint’ as we pass through the city, the scheme considers the nascent practice of consumerdriven biological manipulation. In a world where technology has permeated every

area of human existence, I posit the future advances of technology which leverage the power of plant DNA to benefit society, Focussing specifically on Bioluminescence, a naturally occurring attribute in certain plant and animal species which allows them to emit light, this research and production centre would become the regional centre for Bioluminescent products, facilitating the growth, development and retail of biologically altered plant products.

Folio A Academic Projects 2015 Kunst Akademiet Bodø, Norway
Project in Summary Set in the Northern fishing town of Bodø, Norway, this project proposed a public arts institution as part of a staged development. The goal: to give the growing population the infrastructure for creative output, something which was found to be lacking. Bodø lies within the Arctic Circle, at 67°N, but has a fairly temperate climate - not dissimilar to that in the UK. The site, an old car-park and gap site in the town centre, required a sensitive approach due to its waterfront position and proximity to the main shopping street. As part of a wider public realm strategy which addressed access issues and missed

opportunities to link the town centre to the waterfront, the college makes use of the existing city block, while creating a brick ‘hearth’ as a visual and functional heart for the area. The building comprised studio, workshop and administrative space for the college, and was to be the first of a series of three buildings which form the college - the other two, a library and student accommodation building, were completed by others.

Folio A Academic Projects 2016 Film Studio Gothenburg, Sweden
Project in Summary This project challenges the current attitudes to city planning currently in place in Gothenburg. The city has set in place an ambitious development timeline which extends into the 2050s: one area in particular has been pushed to the back of the urban regeneration queue: Gullbergsvass, an industrial area just East of the city-centre. Despite its proximity to the civic heart, the city has opted to densify just shy of the limits of Gullbergsvass, creating a barrier between it and the city centre. My response is to imagine a masterplan and urban strategy for Gullbergsvass which reacts to the plans the city has already put into

place. At the heart of this masterplan is a Film Studio: a production centre and cinema take on a position in the centre of the masterplan area, making use of a disused railway line for part of the scheme. An architecture of solid volumes, to be used for filming and sound recording, is positioned against a visually lighter steel structure housing offices and breakout space. The scheme will sit in a remediated industrial site, landscaped for use as a public park.

Projects During my time at Plus Three, I was afforded the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, covering many different work stages, sectors and budgets. I also had the opportunity to work with both directors and associate architects, cementing my place as part of the tightly-knit team. While it was a productive experience to work on mature projects, those which were either on-site or had been recently completed, it was very rewarding to work on projects that had just come into the office as I started, with a bid being made as I left. Seeing through a job like this was an invaluable experience.

Bigg Market The Bigg Market Regeneration was the first project I worked on, and one I saw through to completion. Working on behalf of NE1, a business improvement district company, the project was centred around the redevelopment of the Bigg Market area of Newcastle city centre, and included a public realm strategy for the existing Bigg Market square, alongside a facade restoration strategy for the buildings lining the square. Plus Three and NE1 sought to secure Heritage Lottery funding, and my role on this project was to complete a document pack which would outline our argument for the funding.
Site plan of the Bigg Market area.
This included both the physical preparation of every presentation document, as well as surveying, photographing and analysing the site condition. One of the most rewarding experiences to come from working on this project was collaborating with heritage architects to create a set of metrics to date, appraise and recommend treatment to each building facade. After submitting the proposal, Heritage Lottery granted the funds and the project went to tender.

Eaga House The Eaga House project was a residential development in Jesmond, at the heart of Newcastle city centre. Utilising an existing structural grid from a former office block, a number of luxury apartments were to be developed on the site. My role on this project was to design a number of landscaping options for the central atrium, incorporating lighting, greenery and a ‘playful’ element. I developed several of options, however this ‘urban farm’ concept with brightly coloured cows was selected to go forward for client feedback.

Stephenson Village This project was a proposed masterplan for the Killingworth area of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The masterplan was to include housing, public realm and infrastructure. My role was to create a loose, sketchy plan visual for the area to communicate the massing of the various elements. The turnaround time for this project was particularly tight, and with few resources committed to the project due to its early stage, it was very challenging to deliver, however it was submitted comfortably on time.

Thirteen Group Plus Three was in the process of fitting out a base-build by another architect for Thirteen Group, a housing association based in Stockton-on-tees. The client had a strong corporate identity, something which had to be considered during, and closely informed, the design process. My role during this project was to create display boards and presentations to be taken to client consultations. As the client sought a close relationship with the architect in order to convey the brand, these meetings were vital to interpret the client’s desires.
