Ripples was written for Reiko Manabe as a small gesture of compassion in response to the tragic events surrounding the earthquake and tsunami that struck Northern Japan on March 11, 2011. I am awed and humbled by the strength and courage of the people who have met the many challenges facing them with grace. Special Symbols On occasion, a vocal staff appears below the principal staff. When the voice material is pitched it has been transposed to G (always beginning with a unison between alto flute and voice). More often, the material consists of consonants intended to provide a particular articulative texture to the attack. While some microtonal pitches are to be produced via special fingerings, note that several phrases in the piece require the embouchure to be turned inward or outward. In these cases the notated pitch is the resultant sounding pitch that should nevertheless be produced usinga chromatic (i.e. standard) fingering. whistle tone figure (always with embouchure covered): with tip of the tongue filling the lower half of the embouchure hole, the air stream flows over the tongue into the upper portion, producing an intermittent, high, harmonic

double trill with irregular oscillation between trill notes and the principal note

keyed pitch only (no breath, but exaggerated key noise). With closed embouchure the resulting pitch is a major 7th below

timbral trill (also known as bisbigliando). The player selects fingerings that yield significant timbral distinctions

tongue ram. The resulting pitch is a major 7th below (often indicated in the score in parentheses)

harmonic. Note this is distinguished from the whistle tone figure by its use of the ‘o’ symbol above the sounding pitch and an open diamond notehead for the fundamental fingering.
